The 90s and early 2000s have been considered the peak of JDM analog mastery in the sports car realm. No other 4-cylinder car has quite captured the hearts of spirited and track-ready Honda fanboys quite as well as the Civic Type-R. Today we're driving the last naturally aspirated example, the FD2 back-to-back with a modified FK8 Type-R. The pinnacle (so far) of the turbocharged era. Enjoy!

Nothing will ever compare to the raw race car feel of the 90s- 2000s b series and k20/k24 engines
I agree. Never selling my 2008 SI
@@fhowland been looking for one for the longest with low miles but they are either not for sale or they have over 100k miles
@@Jcastro9444 yeah finding a clean low mileage type r is almost impossible!
Still driving my jdm rsx-s
@Roads Unraveled, the closest ever I got to an FD2 civic was the Acura CSX. imported successfully to California and still babying it. Yes manual transmission and bone stock =)
FD2 is easily the best looking Type R.
Definitely! Im converting the rear end of my Si to the JDM taillights.
Yeah i agree together with the ek9
obviously
Best looking civic
Wait a couple more months though…..
I drove both, fk8 is way faster but, fd2r is so much soul in it...
The engine scream, the vtec kicks in.. the sound of the exhaust combine.. I don't know how to explain..
Always put a smile on my face..
Daily would be painful since it is so stiff, and Malaysia's road is kinda suck.
The FD2 had so much done to the chassis to keep it rigid and lightweight. It's about 280lbs lighter than the FK8.
I actually love the ep3 shifter location it's definitely weird visually but in practice it feels pretty normal, just really close to the wheel
Very true
Alot of ppl have this misconception of the EP3 shifter as being awkward. Its one of those things where you just have to "try it for yourself " to get it.
I think it inspired Honda to raise the shifter for all 8th gen Civics onward to the present day. There's now a bracket that raises the shifter higher, which isn't present on the comparable DC5 Integra (RSX) of the same generation as the EP3.
Definitely agree
3:30 as a previous EP3 owner the shifter is 100% enjoyable to drive. The EP3 is such an amazing car to drive.
Drive an Ep3 before making such assumptions, that car is loved over here
FD2, the best NA type R ever...no kidding, the 1st one in Canada, Bravo!
EP3 shifter location may look funny but its actually really good. Tight and precise and right next to the steering wheel.
Fd2r best type r hands down
FD2 Type R is the Best Civic Type R the chassis is soo good
As an owner of a JDM spec EP3 Type R, I love them. Just as quick as a DC5 around track, very lively little cars. The shifter feels perfectly normal even though it may look strange, and to be honest I've really come to love the shifter position, especially with a hybrid racing short shifter. If you manage to get a hold of one, I'd definitely give it a shot.
I do just love the idea of the original EK and EP shorter wheelbase chuckability, just always looked like an awkward interior. Would love to drive one sometime!
@@RoadsUntraveled think driving an EP3 will definitely change your opinion, very popular cars here in England. Understandable styling isn’t as nice as other cars shifter doesn’t look like the best place. But being closer to the steering wheel does make it more driver focused.
@@ToxCcc I personally love the way EP3's look, I never used to, same as the FN2. but as the years have gone on, I've come to love the styling
@@Jmsborland97 think I was the same growing up I preferred the EG and EK shape but as the EP3 get older and rarer they've aged like wine.
As a 2010 Si owner I completely agreee
i don't comment on videos often but damn dude this is such a great video. Your production has gone through the roof
Appreciate that! It won't be every video, but it's something I love to do
I've been singing the praises of the FD2 Civic Type-R since 2008, and it has been my favorite car in the world since then, I absolutely love those cars. Unfortunately for me I'll never get a chance to own one because, well you know, America.
Life is short. Make it happen! from a Fd2r owner
@@kos5120 They cannot be Legally imported into America.
Civic SI is close
@@fhowland A Civic Si is nowhere near a FD2 Civic Type-R, the Type-R is in a completely different universe.
@@deet4895 I wouldn't say a different universe, the Si is close enough you can build off of to get near a FD2 experience
Have a fk8 and ek9 and still think the fd2 is the best looking type r of all time
EP3 shifter actually has some history with the early Honda Z600 from the 70's. Even tho it looks weird, it keeps shifting time from hand-to-wheel short.
you really gotta drive an ep3 that shifter experience is actually really awesome
Man this is a great channel.
The FD2 sound tho 😍I fall inlove every time I hear VTEC Crack
EP3 shifter location is actually quite good. Overall, if you get a JDM version (UK versions lack a LSD), they are a pretty damn good car to drive.
i've got a fd2 non type r automatic tranny and i love it to bits. it's age is now showing w/ regards to wear and tear and consumable parts but for a 17 year old car, it's holding-up pretty well.
Ep3 is common in the uk we love them maybe you need to see one in person. The gear position is awesome you need to try it
I had an ep3 with a k20a2 and 6 speed tranny swap ,shifter feels great and fun little car to drive
Loved the shifter position on EP3. Loved the 8th gen civic. Enjoy the drive of the FK8, I just couldn't get past the exterior to own one. The upcoming one looks sleek in design, I might pull the trigger if I can convince the other half but I would have to sell one of my cars for it.
FN2 in my opinion is the best looking civic Type R, futuristic looking machine. Now remember folks it’s my opinion only before Y,all go crazy
ep3 is sick bro, don’t sleep.
I have a FD2 and modified to a Type R ❤Really love the design
Can’t wait to see the ep3 😌
ep3 is honest to god the best driving NA type R ever built. My personal favorite and a fantastic shifter.
Ep3 shifter location is great. I daily drove an ep3r for nearly 5 years. Don’t knock it until you’ve driven one.
The never ever fade on the Artistic Racing Look and experience will the The FD2 TYPE R.
I own a modded fk8 but seeing a video of one same color in a hq video is mesmerizing
🙏🏼
Minus points for the throwaway comment about the ep3 shifter. Very ergonomic and driver focused!
fd2 never gets old 💟
last pure jdm legendary civic :)
Fk2 > Fk8
FD2 > all
Love the yellow S2000 camera car ❤️
Glad you noticed haha. Great, clean example too.
The ep3 has the best shifter positions I've ever had. And I've had multiple type R's (and other cars like 200sx, mx5, ..). It's funny how people Who never drove one always tend to criticise it and everyone that has driven one, loves the position.
This FK8 sounds much better than stock in my opinion. And I love the look too 😍.
Sounds like a weed wacker
It’s Remus valved exhaust with Remus fp and PRL catless dp
Now modify the FD2 and then we see what happens 👀
Im about to turbo my fd2, should be fun
The fd2 seats are made by Recaro but is brand for type r
Everybody forgets the fn2 which looks the best imo
Technically the FN2 is the last naturally aspirated Type R ever made as the FD2 ended production a couple months before the FN2.
Aaahh I didn't know that! Couple months makes all the difference. FD2 built in Japan means a lot, too.
The FN2 isnt a real type R tho so...
@@TheFK8Life That statement makes zero sense, but okay.
@@GazMonty Lots of people would claim that the FN2 is more like a Type S or Si which is labelled "Type R" merely for marketing purposes. Which is reasonably fair IMO. Each to their own, I find still mine a lot of fun and quite like having the sound insulation and somewhat softer suspension lol (I had the DC5 Type R with it's lack of sound insulation and harder suspension found that a little bit annoying for an everyday car TBH). I don't mind at all that the FN2 is a car more akin to a Prelude VTEC than a "hardcore" JDM Type R.🙂
Regardless, some people still complain about the FN2's ride compared to the cars like the Focus XR5 (ST) or Mk5 Golf GTI and say that FN2 is too sporty and stiff compared to those... so make your mind up folks! Is it too soft or too hard, which is it, lol.
It did start the trend of modern Civic Type Rs being fully loaded with cruise control, still having sound insulation etc.
To defend the FN2, it does share a LOT of parts with the FD2 (gearbox and LSD (where fitted, which mine does have thankfully) is exactly the same, flywheel is exactly the same (the later lightweight 5kg version), shifter is exactly the same, cylinder head casting is exactly the same (the later RSP version that flows better) albeit with the customary milder cam profile of non-JDM models, the seats are the same apart from the fabric etc). It still has alloy control arms unlike the Civic Si too, albeit it only has the same brakes as the Si.
You should do a comparison with fd2 and fd5 the Canadian only Acura csx type s
I own both FD2 and FK8 type R. I Bought FK8 on May 2020, and I just got FD2 on June. After that, I barely drive FK8. FK8 is way faster then FD2, but FD2 is much more fun to drive then FK8.
I recommend change exhaust straight pipe.
Change After beautiful VTEC sound.
I'm looking at one tomorrow. That might be the second one you mentioned in Canada. I think I'm buying it!
EP3/Element shifter location is so underrated. Just go try one. It will make sense.
its the only car that is officially sold in Japan and officialy exported to Malaysia. an absolute last true type-R
the reason for the shifter being there in the ep3 is that honda modeled after honda race cars
plenty of FD2R in Singapore as well Malaysia.
Don’t knock the ep shift position till you try one trust me
The FN2 and FK2 are the forgotten cousin (except for in the U.K.)
People are to stuck in the past. The FK8 kills it in any form of track. It is what it is.
Time to move on
Sure, but they can both be fun, no? 🙂 IMO, for an everyday road car having less power and being able to use more of it (and more of the revs) more of the time is more fun. I'm glad to see the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ still using an old fashioned naturally aspirated high-revving (one of the last affordable cars to still have that), as much as some say that would rather see the torquey engine from the WRX (with it's 6000rpm redline...) in that car. Thankfully the FK8's engine does still rev out pretty well.
Honda are not trying to make the old car obsolete, they just are evolving it and making something different and (mostly) improved. Some people prefer the EK9, which is even slower than the FD2 again! Granted, for what the FD2s cost now (as much as used FK8 or more for a car that's 10 years older), I'm not sure that's worth it... It seems to be more of a collector car now (FD2s used to be more reasonably priced, maybe 50% more than a comparable FN2 or Civic Si, rather than three or four times the price!).
Fn2 is so underrated please make a review
I'd love to! Never seen one before. I'd imagine they don't come up for sale too often for export into North America
Dang, a real FD2R already legal to be imported to YVR?
I still remember during my uni times, few FA5 were converted to fd2r looks
08:20 - Would love to know where these gauge pods are available from and if they do them in RHD for us UK peeps.
The drift king from best motoring said the fd2 is his favorite fwd
I had no clue that there was 8th generation civic type r
The FD2 is a remarkable car but I will always prefer the DC5 Type R simply because of its body style.
Stock I’ll give it to the dc5 but IMO the integra lacks aftermarket customization compared to the 8th gen civic
13:59
256 whp when that FK8 was stock? What in the world kind of dyno was that? Most dyno closer to 290 whp stock.
Yeah. I was confused when he said that. No way!!
Love my fk8. Fun and fast at stock power.
But sounds like a vacuum /: fd2 is the better looking n sounding type r + u can always add a supercharger on it if u want fast
@@rubenruiz5795 i agree it's not the best noise on the market having owned an fk8 in the past but like the video says, the dailies and modern comforts of driving one, yeah... i really did enjoy my purchase, so much so that I'm actually considering buying another! :) (Maybe do something about the noise too with some aftermarket, lol )
@@rubenruiz5795. Add a supercharger if I want fast? Flash the FK8, & you get faster than a supercharger.
I'd take the FD2 any day over the FK8. Honestly, I hate the FK8. But I've never driven either so who knows lol. Great video as always
I used to hate ep3 too. But overtime i fell inlove with it. Hope to own one someday. EK9 still the best civic type r. Fk8 sounds so bad. Just yuck. 😅
So why is it better to be "hunkered down" low in the seat when driving fast? When you are in a stock 10th Gen you can barely see out of the front, sides, or rear. The 11th Gen corrects that by use of better mirrors. If I use seat spacers I can finally see the hood of my 10th Gen and see the road better but out of the box the visibility is pretty bad.
I know the ep3 type r doesn’t get much love but I’d like to see you review one
old school rule!
FD2 is the ultimate NA/Manual driving machine where you can feel the engine, the best monument if petrol vehicle is dying
The FK8 can sound pretty good if you know what you're doing with the exhaust. Seems as though the owner of this one didn't. Sounds like he got rid of the resonator, which is why it sounds like it's exhausting through a soda can
Can’t fault the location of the shifter in the EP3 if you’ve never driven one. I guarantee you will change your mind once you do.
How are you going to get these two cars together and race each other. Either in the street or track of both
It was a missed opportunity this video.. Looking for some track time so we can make it happen :D
🔥🔥👀
Im from Surrey Bc. Where is this beautiful country roads. Nice Civics😇
Go out and explore! Plenty to find in BC. Glad you enjoyed the Type-Rs
FD2 😍 the best era of real Motorsport todays civics just sound like vacuumes /:
Video is unavailable on this device. tried on phone and pc :'(
I have spoken with RUclips support about this! Fix should be coming. Thanks for your patience :D
The FK8 just has so much going on, It really lost the spirit of being the blue collar workers subtle and inconspicuous race car. Hope the new one is a little more reasonably designed.
EK9 with a K20a swap. That's the one.
I owm a modified FA5 and an FK8 - i loved the FA5 for its chassis stiffness and wider track to fitt 255s as a daily - made for alot of grip putting power down. Amazing high speed stability. Then I bought my FK8 - completely next level compared to the FA5 - on 265s grips for days. made 413/402 on FBO e30 and now 533/429 on p600.
Absolute beast on the street - going to 305s upfront - stock fenders - yeah - Its a real Type R for the modern world we live in.
For anyone who wants to watch the dyno vid
ruclips.net/video/FOjbuLikAwI/видео.html
Both amazing cars fa5 will always be the best
@@Red-ev8ls lol best at what? The front suspension on the FA5 is limited and the FK8 is on another level - the FL5 just went 2:58:8 at VIR - fwd production record. Technology advances - just the way it goes.
What did you do to import that car into Canada
I'm going to put a K24 into my 2008 Mugen Si Civic and compare it to the FK8 performance. I'll make a video of it.
you are sadly mistaking about the ep3, owners perspective the shifter is perfect
I hope dude put up video of driving one to eat those comments
❤️❤️❤️🔰🔰🔰 I'm gonna keep mine as long as I could drive it . Our roads are not as good as Canada 😅
im going to get an FD2 when it can be imported to the US. The fd2 in my opinion has such a great chassis and great N/A k20 enguine. just sad how things now are just turbocharged when N/A type r are always better in my opinion
I feel like when things are non turbocharged people complain, but then when we get a turbo, people still complain and it’s why we can’t have nice things
😭 I need to move to Canada so I can import a 7th Gen Accord (Inspire)
that fk8 is sexy!! looks super wide with the new wheels
Right?? Incredibly wide for a factory car based off an economy platform.
R-21019, nice!
And we in the US have to wait another 10 years lol
:( It'll come soon enough. Try out an S15 Silvia or R34 Skyline while you wait ;) Those are legal within the next 12-24 months.
@@RoadsUntraveled that's true an S15 would be beautiful
i feel like this car is overshadowed by the integra and the ek😢
7k redline in the FK8, 8600 in the FD2
FD2 not much electronics and it’s all up to the driver, hence it’s cheaper to maintain.
While FK8 kind of relying on the electronic stuff, traction control, smarter ABS etc yet still able to go fast. The maintenance cost wasn’t cheap though, ain’t almost all the turbocharged racecar just expensive to maintain…
In stock form, for any car, it mattwrs what kind of dyno it was tested on. 256whp is super low. Sounds like a Mustang dyno. Most Dynojets are around 280whp. My FK8 made 295whp 306tq bone stock on 93 octane on a Dynojet. Several other FK8's have done around the same. Depends on which dyno. Itd be better to use 93 octane than 91 as well.
The only difference in the Euro or Japanese versions engine is the gas used. They use 98 RON which is equivalent to our 93. So basically i can say my car is still 316hp stock in the U.S. if I wanted. Which i use that and when it was stock, it dyno'd 295 at the wheels like I said.
Just throwing that out there.
5:37 hahah
The Ek9 everyone loves so much ...the B16b was built in Ohio so what would you consider a true type R if the most wanted is partly domestic
Yeah, I think he also misspoke by implying the engines in the English-made Type Rs were made in Japan, sent to England, then put in the car and sent back to Japan (unless he meant the EP3 when that was true). All the turbo Type R engines have also been made in Ohio AFAIK, then sent to England for fitment to the cars. The engines are still made in Ohio and sent over to be fitted to the new FL5 that's made in Japan too AFAIK.
@@TassieLorenzo so all this means is that the best engines are American engines
