    Good point about hitchhiking cocoons. What are your thoughts on coco coir in the bedding? I like a mix of coir with cardboard.

      @@MikeR_DiveR Thanks for watching Mike! Yes CocoCoir is a great option. I only use what I use because of cost and proven success. I know several breeders who use Coco I just haven’t needed to introduce that. Im hoping to do some experimenting once I have my system established , that may never happen haha!

    I love how simple you keep this! I’ve tried all kinds of mixes for growing out my Euros to bait size and to be honest keeping it simple works just as well! I mix mushroom substrate, indoor compost and shredded cardboard (all free materials the worms love). If I have a lot of free pine shavings and straw I’ll add those as well, but the basic works just as well. I get the straw and pine from a gal I get horse manure from. The manure is a big chunk of my indoor compost (basically just manure, alfalfa pellets and some pine pellets).
    How many worms do you add per tray to grow them out to bait size? I’m playing around some new trials and have yet to get it completely hammered out since space is limited. They seem to breed faster than I can get them to their XL size so I’ve had to resort to a couple large bulk bins that hold the extra little guys while the others are getting big enough to use as bait. My bulk bin is basically what you’re using for the hatch bins I believe, or at least very similar. I don’t mind having the extras most of the time but for fishing season I need all the trays I can get focused on growing them out. I just keep up with demand using 32 med mixing trays and 4 of the large ones. Maybe I just need to find more space :D. I’m jealous of your garage!

      @@brookeonyx6271 Hey there! I’m actually going to be doing a video on how I grow out the worms. I’m in the same situation. I can’t breed them very successfully but now the trick will be to make sure I’m getting them to the size they need to be big enough for our fisherman. Moisture and space is critical from what my mentors have shared with me. I am testing it out now and my worms are growing so so far so successful and I will make sure I tag you in the video I make growing out my European nightcrawlers. Thanks so much for the support and thank you so much for watching! Please share any advice or suggestions you have. I am always open to learning new things.

    Is garden lime, ok?

  • @rickjay4639
    @rickjay4639 3 месяца назад +1

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, i always thought lime was needed if you are using peat moss as a bedding? I use ground egg shells because I get the shells from a local restaurant. Love your videos, thanks for your hard work. 👍

      @@rickjay4639 Hey there thanks for watching! You could very easily be right but I have just followed a couple mentors and they’ll add it when using compost soil and so thats why I do it. Not sure if necessary but we’ve been successful so I do it hahaha! Appreciate the kind words 🤙🏼

    • @brookeonyx6271

      Lime keeps all bedding material neutral. As food rots acidity is raised, so the lime will keep things how the worms like it. Also it adds calcium and is another grit source.

    Question: Are the room lights on 24/7? Or do the worms wander at night with the room lights off? Those Lowes bins have no fitted lids I believe. Thanks.

    • @utahwormcompany
      @utahwormcompany  3 месяца назад

      @@ewjutube Yes we leave the lights on 24/7 however we have had times when the lights have been off and they didn’t wander so I think they’re happy in their bins. Just don’t want to take the risk and lose any. No fitted lids unfortunately so I use cut up visqueen plastic to keep the moisture in and keep it dark for them. Plenty of O2 gets in 👍🏼Appreciate the question and support.

      @@marylambert5038 Hey there! I use a minimum 16 sheet shredder I bought on Facebook Marketplace and another one off our classifieds platform here in Utah. They shred it with no problem. They will overheat but thats common even if shredding paper. That’s why I have couple so it doesn’t slow me down. @@utahwormcompanydoes it have to be shredded finely? I am cheap and don’t want to spend money to vermicompost. I just wet my cardboard overnight and tear up the cardboard into like 3-4 inches pieces and call it a day. Does depth of the bedding matter like if it is too deep?
