One of my cross country drives from NW to East Coast around 25 years ago at 2 to 3 in the morning I was driving on some very remote road through Utah or Wyoming(i forget exactly..memory aint what it used ta be) i was a bit low on gas,hungry/thirsty and had to relieve myself(in the sitting position🤣) and came across this desolate gas station.
It was about 1/8th of a mile off the road, you had to drive down a bit of an incline that went down and around the rocky terrian and put you pretty much out of sight from the road.
When i got down there and parked, the place looked closed,I was actually not expecting a station, let alone one that would be open at this time in the middle of nowhere.
The place was off putting to say the least, one large light high up that shone down on the old pumps and the smallish building, that creates a kind of cone area of light and casts long shadows that trail off into thw darkness.
Anyway, I made my way to the door of the tiny store front if the building, sigh said open, but it was very dimly lit inside and looked deserted,i tried the door, locked. So i turned to go and then I hear a man inside say gimme a sec im comin, he opened the door, he was pretty much the definition of a creepy gas station guy in the middle of west bumblefudge nowhere, from any 80's horror movie. Tallish,thin but not skinny with a basketball shapped potbelly,longish dark reddish hair looked like it was slept on for a week and never washed. "whatcha need fella".. i said a bit of drink,a snack,20 in gas and the bathroom(i said the sh'tter,but i wouldnt say that on youtube😆) "Come" is all he said. The inside was dark, dank and very cramped,basicly the counter on the left and then on the right a 10 foot path between shelves with snacks on one side and random crap on the other(oil,electric tape,trinkets,etc..)and the skinny glass door to the fridge at the back with the very basic pop drinks.
The gloom and the atmosphere in the place put you on edge and into an sense of alertness but by now i really had to use the john. Paid for the pop/chips and a 20 for gas,asked for the bathroom key "dont need none,its open, lock is broken"...okay... I thanked him and said Night. Walked out creeped out, but i needed to handle business so i hurridly went to the pump and threw my sode/chips in and headed to the back of the station.
Get there,open the door,pitch dark, fumble for a light switch,click the light on and i kid you not, the bulb was one of those old time ones that flicker hard,like the ones you see in video games like Silent Hill or Resident Evil. Down right F'n surreal and even a rough guy like me,whose been through many a thing or three,is set on edge,but i had to do my Duty.../Salute.
Of course as soon as i popped a squat, i hear noise outside, some light scrapping sound, a far off bang of metal on metal. So i hurried my arse up and dumped my heavy load quicker than chit and was out the door as i was still zippin up and buttoning my pants.
Dead silence...man the hairs on my entire body was standin up and i went into that pre-flight or fight mode, where your senses are firing on all cylinders. Comin around from the back of the building and the lights or all off in the building. What the F...k, There was no vehicles in the station when i pulled in,and it was not a Service station,it had no garage. I was lookin around like a owl,head swivellin around far as it would go as i now hurried the 50 feet(probably only 20 feet from the station)to my vehicle, i got to the door and turned around as i was going to get in to make sure nobody behind me, then i thought Crap i gotta put in the gas and i shit you not, as soon as i thought that I hear on the otherside of the car metal scrap against metal and i turned around faster then a muthafrucker. And it was the damn creep from the store he was rising from sittin on a something next to the pump as he pulled the pump out of the gas tank(that was the metal scrapping sound).. he said"your gassed up" (to let you know, I am from Jersey and we dont pump our own gas, but when im in other states you pump your own gas so i was 100% not expecting this guy to stand up from behind the other side of the car and nearly had to head back the the crapper) he turned the cap on and started walkin around the car, i damn sure wasnt gettin in that car till he was nearly back to the store and made sure he wasnt holding a hatchet or bowie knife behind his back. Soon as he was almost back at the store i hopped in,fired her up,yelled thanks out the window and got the fruk outta there like a wild hair up a lightning bolts ahole.
Everything might have been in my head...but i cant help but to think if i wasnt a rough guy myself,that was paying attention to their surroundings and instead i was a weak looking guy oblivious to his surroundins or if it was a woman, that there would have been a different outcome.
This is a True Story from my past. And you are welcome to use it if you like, and im fine if you change my colorfull language a bit if you have to to not upset the sandy vajayjays at youtube. Oh..and please feel free to correct mispellings and grammer that does not make sense, im on my cell phone and its very hard to edit a long post in here, thanks.
