Sehwag's Miscalculation - with 1 wicket required in 4 Overs | Why Laws (& Umpires) Matter | Cricket

- India vs South Africa - 2010
2nd Test
South African Tour of India
India had lost the First test to south africa & was at the risk of losing a home series after 6 years.
India had to win this test match..
& within sniffing distance of victory
with just 1 wicket required in 4 overs, & Hashim Amla still on the crease
Virendra Sehwag did the unthinkable
He kicked the Ball to the boundary.
What followed was a textbook Demonstration of Umpiring and it's Laws at it's finest.
Following the 2000 Revision of MCC laws
from law 19.2 to 41.2 to 42.2....
It was in Short, the proof
that Umpires - still Matter.

Before that, the only such incident we knew was Captain Russell kicking the ball to keep Kachra on strike for the last over... Perhaps that made Sehwag do it 🤣🤣🤣
🤣
😂😂

ICC is so much biased 😅😅
@Amrut Bagul- 😆😆😆
I used to work in South Africa in 2010. It was lunch time at work when the game was nearing it's end. I was sitting with my South African colleagues in the canteen, having finished lunch and all watching the match intently. So were the people at the other lunch tables. Harbhajan was bowling and I think it was a close lbw call; I on my part cried a loud 'Yess!!' in excitement of that appeal forgetting that I was amongst South Africans and mine was the only voice that came out at that moment. I was embarrassed and looked across the room, the others were nodding their head in disapproval while my colleagues who had lunched with me let out a sheepish laugh.
At the end of the match, which wasn't too far from that moment, I was secretly elated but took caution not to show it too much. Great memory and greater still, those people in South Africa. They know what is sports and what sportsmanship is.
And hey, cricket has LAWs; other sports have rules. Great video otherwise.
Wonderful read! Thanks for sharing.
Embarrassing as hell
Bhajji bowled a dusra toh morne morkel and morkel was caught lbw 😅
We were watching this match in hostel together....though there was tension in everyone's face, we all laughed so hard by seeing Sehwag's kick... 😂

Umpires who understand the situation, judge the human behaviour & intention accurately, have the courage to make the right decision and are open to acknowledging the mistake they sometimes make and correct it will always be important to this game we love! Umpires like David Shepherd, Rudy Koertzen, Billy Bowden and Simon Taufel are truly missed!
We have such umpires still like Nitin menon and all
@@matulyashah6934 Nitin Menon is one of the best umpires in the scene right now, yes, but my point was not around comparing any umpires. The four of them were something else with their judgement and precision
Erasmus is the best of the current lot now
@@volttackle6374 Marais Erasmus and Nitin Menon, yes.
I miss Steve Buckner 😭😭😭
Same was done by Kevin Pietersen at midoff position where he deliberately didn't stop the boundary and let the ball go, to keep dhoni away from strike for the next over , in 2011 memorable test series
Shewag should have used his hands to lift the ball and contacted the boundary .. then it would have been a four without over throw
You changed my rigid thinking man.. If I were the governing body I would have eradicated umpires way before.. But now I am understanding why they are important.. Due to these situations we need human umpires
That's why you and people like are not in the governing body
In my school days I watched a simillar match where captain Russell purposefully kick the ball to the boundary to keep Kachra on the strike.. I must say it was very tense moment or else we would have payed 'Teen Guna Lagaan".

In school my PHE teacher to not choose cricket as sports in exam, because it has 42 rules with lot of complexities

Whatever it may be but viru is all time favourite 🔥🔥🇮🇳🇮🇳
no
It's called hypocrisy
You wouldn't sound disappointed if the concerned person was Jacques Kallis and not Virendra Sehwag. I think the Ump did the right thing to abide by the rules.
I still remeber the match where bajji took the last wicket leg before wicket of Morkel and gave celebratory run covering the entire ground in beast mode of sheer aggression after picking up a wickt. I never heard what happened actually in the match. Now I release the umpires presence.
And Umpires forgot those rules in Eng vs Nz Wc match 😭😭😭

I remember the gameeeeee.
Sehwag could have simply continued running, stepped on the ball and slipped on the boundary rope with the ball, to make it look like an accident 😉
Oiii fisal gaya
Or he should have just pick the ball with the hand touching to boundary as he told in the video, that would have been the most simple way.

The similar law should be enforced that can help to overrule umipring decisions and runs awarded by umpires like Dharmasena the Great
Wow I love your videos I just found your channel and been binge watching I’ve learned soo much already and gained a lot of respect for Indian cricket they’ve pulled off some incredible things I never heard about. I’m Australian but kinda stopped watching after Ricky Ponting retired. This has got me interested again especially watching India play.
Sehwag once in his overconfidence was walking a run, and his overconfidence cost him a run out, and team was cruising, but because of his overconfident walk team started to lose wickets
can’t wait to watch it!!
Though penalty of 5 runs were given, batsmen didn't change ends, which led to Morkel facing strike in next over resulting in India's win. All of this need not have happened if Laxman hasn't dropped Amla's catch on 60.
It’s fine Sri Lanka done him over when he needed his hundred
Amla stood at non striker and he kept strike for the next over actually, and we got wicket of Morkel 2 overs after this incident

Nobody question when the batsman stop taking runs to shield the tail ender. I wonder why is that called as fair play ?
This is illogical questioning. Do you expect batsmen to allow bowlers to take strike and do bulk of scoring?
@@chetanmoolya1620 batsman wicket and bowler wicket is counted equally as per the law of Cricket
@@papesuri bro but obviously they are known bowlers for a reason right? Like you cannot expect a bowler to score runs everytime. Its the same in every sports...you cannot expect a goalkeeper to score everytime obviously there are strikers to do that. Similarly you do not expect a bowler to take a wicket!
@@chetanmoolya1620 Bro what are you talking about ? Total illogical & does not make any sense when you compare football and cricket
Anyways the context here is fair play. Please be logical in your reasoning the next time if you reply.
@@papesuri So I will assume you have either not seen much cricket or not played much cricket. You are asking Bowlers to score runs and you think that's logical? If a batsman does not take a single in the middle of the over you want it to be termed as unfair practice? Think out loud and you might get the answer who is absolutely illogical here!
Kudos to your analysis.

Lack of spirit of sportsmanship from Sehwag....... What a shame especially coming from as senior player as him...... Had it been done by any Pakistani players dunno what we Indians would have started saying starting from the media and the fans OOF !!!...... By the way am an Indian too
Why did umpires didn't intervene when randiv bowled a no ball willingly to avoid Sehwag's 100. I know that they suspended randiv later but Sehwag lost a 100 and who will give that loss
Are you saying that the umpire could have pulled Randiv's shirt and stopped him?
@@TheChimy99 They should have given 100 to Sehwag which is fair and umpires can take a call

Where were the Umpires and their righteous judgements during the unfair play in the England Vs New Zealand Worldcup match.
This was intentional. That one wasn't
@@cross5025 No point in explaining it to him. Some people just didn't want England to win the World Cup but England deserved it and won it. These people still can't accept the fact that they won it in a fair way without breaking any rules, just that luck favoured them on that one particular occasion.

If what Sehwag did is unfair, then why intentionally not taking a run to retain strike should also be considered unfair?
They did it legally/ within the law
If it had gone for the four naturally then couldn’t be batting next over.
You play the the game agreeing to its laws/rulesat that time or suffer the consequences.
Supposed Dhoni at the time shouted to sehwag to leave the ball alone and let it go to the boundary, if it went to the boundary would it still be looked at as being unfair?
Your explanation is immaculate.
Plss make this video to your 2nd channel cricket raaz hindi ...
Imagine if this happened when light is failing fast 😂😂😂.
A similar event took place during west indies tour of England. They wanted to get Jermaine Lawson on strike (I stand to be corrected). Can't remember who the other batsman was but he struck the ball down to the boundary and it stopped about two feet away from the rope. Harmison kicked the ball over the boundary..Lawson was cleaned up the next over ending what was a bloodbath by any cricketing standards. Rules 19.7 and 42.1 were never applied and before today I never knew they existed.

Batsman was hashim amla or gremme smith with broken finger?
It was Smith who played with a broken hand but it happened when south africa toured Australia
Please make a discord server so we can talk to you sometime
why was that out?
I watched the highlight, I observed that probably wasn't deliberate from sehwag, and ofc as u said it was the 5th ball of the over not the 6th, and amla would've wanted to take a Single on the last delivery of the over to keep the strike, not on the second last delivery

It's not 42.seventeen, it's 42.one-seven
No bro, this decimal thing doesn't happen here
You would call 42.17 as Forty Two point seventeen
lol.. it's not number system. it's nomenclature.
According to you, 42.17 and 42.170 would be the same, but they aren't, when we are using the numbers for nomenclature.
Remember a maths chapter's equation numbers?
Simply sehwag things
What determines "willfully" and "unwillfully"? What may seem unwillfull to me might seem willfull to you.
Exactly, that's why it's the umpires call.
Its a very tricky thing nonetheless, so maybe the best thing we can do is entrust a non partisan third party with the decision making role
Sehwag. Why did you make it look deliberate.
can u talk about the series of pak vs nz and nz withdrawing at the last second pls
Poor sportsmanship by Sehwag. No matter how good a batsman he is, he doesn't really have high regards for the rules of the game.. very casual attitude..

You're very biased he deliberately kicked the ball if it wasn't clear enough.
Bro, it's innings and not inning.. Innings is an universal plural and singular used in cricket. In baseball you could say inning for singular. Sorry for the lecture, just hurts the ears. And my apologies if I offended you unintentionally.
@NS - 07SS 980163 Mount Pleasant Village PS There are few words which are the same as singular number or plural .Example : barracks ,chassis ,corps etc.in cricket there's no 'inning '..it's always innings ( be it singular or plural). So the commentators you have heard saying inning ( mostly Indians or sub Continent commentators) don't / didn't know it and that's wrong, period.
Inning is used most probably in a baseball game but definitely not in cricket. You'd not hear any native English speaking commentator saying inning.
Ohh and yes, if you say dhoni's inning you're saying it wrong. You can say it in india and get away with it but not in those places where English is their mother tongue.
How do I know this? I used to make the same mistake and my English colleagues used to laugh at me back in my London days. Cheers
