I get what you mean unlike the other commenters here. It’s rare and unique for a white person to grow up in Japan. Especially back then. Especially since Asian countries don’t allow immigration. Heck no matter how much a foreigner assimilates they’ll never be accepted in the fold. Unlike western nations that accept practically everyone even if they don’t speak the language and refuse to assimilate. Especially America. Just step over the border and you’re American.

@@pkpk-h2k you should watch their video about how they met, and the oppositions from her husband's parents at first. Anyway, it is not a mental problem when you choose to be with someone from different culture or race or nationality. In the world we live in, people move around so much that you can meet anyone from anywhere. And when you meet someone that you feel comfortable and the right one, maybe it can lead to something more serious. There is no harm in it. Not as if you ought to choose only by your race or place where you're born.

@@Nikolai508 I think many people who aren't veterans, especially those of us in the US with how the social climate tends to skew, can't fully appreciate what those experiences are like. Many of the people in my life that I have spoken to who have been in wars, and those I've seen in interviews, have a completely different mentality and viewpoint on their "enemies" once war is over. Honestly even during the wars many hate what they're doing and it's only a matter of survival. Many talk about not having hate for the other side, and seeing them as being just like themselves and being put into a terrible situation for their countries. But for regular citizens, many of us only hear the horror stories, the political side of the war from the News back home. I think this is why many see this as being amazing, while many veterans will shrug their shoulders and say exactly what you have, "why would they hate them?" I think it's amazing how complex the human mind and heart really are. No matter how long you live, people may still surprise you.

"socially backwards" for men to wisely shy away from burdening themselves with the offspring of other men?
You are too funny; but then again, you are a lost female. lol
There is no society in the world in which the average male IS EVER going to be eager to take on the burden of another man's woman and his children. NONE!
Why don't you tell us the non-"backward society" where you are from, and when males are tripping over themselves to take on another man's secondhand female and his children? Where? lol
More often than not the stepfather and step children have issues.
If the secondhand female has daughters, the stepfather may consider them bonus mates, and so many other weird scenarios.
And that is why most real men with want to take custody of their children, and so help protect them from horrible or questionable stepfathers.

The fact that there's not many biracial American-Japanese in your generation proves how odd yet so brave your dad's family's decision was. Their story is one of a kind. Would love to hear more of their stories.

@@BgnrMdl1 Ahh, right! I didn't for a second consider in US and/or other US military bases (though I live in one lmao). Good to know there's plenty there. I was initially thinking exclusively in Japan -- I hardly know any American-Japanese (OP is actually the first and it's not even personal) but I know plenty of German-Japanese for some reason and I figured it has smth to do with the WWII. We learn everyday!

Amazing story! There a similar story in s.korea as well. Yohan In (John Linton) was born and raised in s.korea. His grand father was a missionary, did alot of great things. His father built over 600 churches in Korea. Mr. In has became a first white doctor in 1987 and still working as a doctor.

Those family photos at the end were such a nice touch! It's really interesting to hear that your dad's family came to Japan in the fifties! I guess the entire circumstances with the Japanese side of the family being used to more western stuff and all that really helped. But that doesn't mean that anyone who never had direct contact to another culture can't be open-minded. I guess when people fit together they just do and the people they're close with can tell.
While being an international couple can come with it's own challenges it's nice to see it works out for so many people. Goes to show we're all just human.

Thank you and your parents for sharing such a poignant story of their families history and how they met. They are pretty open and come from such forward looking families. Love is love even if it falls between different cultures. I love their openness about their early days together and being so close after such a tramatic moment in Japanese and American history. God bless your families and thank you again for sharing their story. You are very lucky to have them and what history to pass on to your children.

Stephan's grandfather was a missionary with a very specific calling, to heal children’s heart. I am related to this. I was a Sunday school teacher for many years and the reward is beyond words. Stephan's dad had no objection to falling in love with a woman with 3 children and raising them like his father. His heart was open to love unconditionally. I can feel the atmosphere of joy and peace in that home. Grandchildren, son-in-law feel so happy to be with them and also the view is spectacular! ❤❤❤❤

I rewatched this and again so sorry for commenting so much! But Steph’s family is just so much like my maternal side of the family.
I’ve lost my grandpa and my beloved grandma and so your videos help me feel like I’ve reconnected with them. Even though I am not related to you guys. It’s just nice to see footage of people who remind you so much of your family.
Your mom has what feels like a similar backstory as my grandpa. Though he’s Chinese and not Japanese. I loved listening to stories about him because he was considered an anomaly. He was extremely westernized despite being full Chinese. He liked American football and liked American cars and fashion. Something that was unheard of in China back then. He did experience the Japanese occupation and saw many of friends die. But I don’t think he held any animosity towards Japanese people. Just towards the government at the time. When he moved to the States, I believe he made a few Japanese American friends but not sure. He died before I was born so I only know him from stories and photos and audio. In any case he assimilated quite well. He looked a lot like your brother Sam. And just like your dad, he immediately took in a child who was not his own and housed and gave a job to a total stranger and eventually married her. So many similarities, it’s just crazy. I feel like I was meant to find your video. ❤️🙏🏻
