FYI: at 3.14 we the bassplayer Chas Chandler, the guy who discovered Jimi Hendrix in New York, took him back to England, formed (and produced) The Jimi Hendrix Experience and that lead to the birth of a legend... (of course all of this is Jimi's merit)

They were a British band. The guy on the organ was Alan Price. He was from Newcastle and later went out on his own to produce some good stuff. Very talented.
Most people think this song is about a brothel because the original version is about a woman. In truth, it is about a workhouse that the poor who could not afford a home or food and people sentenced to petty crimes, also out of poverty stole, would work for 18 hrs every day at a long table. If they did not do good work, they did not eat for the day. If they were let go, no one would hire them so they had to go back, grow old and die in the House of the Rising Sun.
The "Rising Sun" was above the door entering the workhouse. It meant that they are "working their sins off with the "Rising Sun" pointing towards Jerusalem. They were working for redemption, while in a literal Hell.
The original tune is not this Jazzy, Bluesy sound, it was a song so old it was traced back to Britain. It is a folk song most likely from Scotland. Bob Dylan found the song and arranged it in the form we know it today in the early 60's.

A mid 60's British blues band, this song was the first song other than Beatles songs that reached number one in American charts. The band is named the Animals because Eric Burdon (lead singer) admired a famous drunkard in Newcastle nicknamed the Animal, so he took the name from there. The actual song 'House of the Rising sun' is a very old folk song, this Animals version was based on the Bob Dylan version a couple years earlier. It's a song which generally talks of a girl who has to work in a brothel till the end of her days but has been altered in other versions of the song. It's called the Rising Sun as that's what the British used to call Brothels. The band had a sad ending, they broke up soon after and led a bitter relationship since. Conflict over royalties for this very song split the band apart. The Bassist Chas Chandler died in 1996 and after the animals were broken up, he discovered Jimmy Hendrix in his own music producer career. The other three are still alive today and they have been induced into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1994.

The lyric phrase, "I am going back to New Orleans, to wear that ball and chain" is a another way of expressing that the individual is going back to New Orleans to The house of the Rising Sun, to wallow in a den of addictions of vices such as drinking prostitution and gambling. The ball and chain, is symbols of the toll that those vices take on the mind. The man knows its a destructive path for himself and his family but the ADDICTION and NEED to satisfy are too strong to stop.

Eric Burden (the lead singer) doesn’t receive royalties from this record due to the fact that nobody knows who wrote the song so the arrangement was credited to Alan Price, (keyboard) there wasn’t enough space on the record for all the names so Mickie Most I think suggested Alan go on the credits because alphabetically he was first, therefore receiving all the royalties. They all fell out. Eric Burden is considered by many of his peers as one of the greatest soul voices ever. He was popular when the toured the States. Many audience members expected an older black man instead this young geordie rocks up.

In both the singer is dying (possibly of VD), therefore returning to the house of their ruin.

Listen to Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, I’m Crying, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, It’s My Life by them as well. Eric Burdon (the lead singer) went on to sing with the R&B group War and they had a major hit with Spill The Wine. Eric was also a friend of Jimi Hendrix.

This 78 year old singer is still touring and in his younger days was the best singer on the planet!! He also sang a lot of blues and still does.

They were forced by their manager to dress like that. They were real rough bad boys (made the Stones look like choir boys.) When they came to the US it was especially daunting because the were made to "behave" and not to frighten people, curtail their libidos, etc., and when the Stones came over the same month, they were all long haired, jeans and leather and "lock up your daughters". The Animals were really pissed because they couldn't be themselves, the tough, true working class, northern Geordies. God! The Animals were so great, just such perfection for a moment in time. Absolute perfection.

Which could refer to an actual prison, or a metaphorical one, eg returning to an addiction or enforced prostitution/ servitude, etc... Love the great, evocative lyrics in the Animals' version. You can really weave your own meaning around it.

I gotta say that we're so damn lucky here in The States for the "British Invasion,"in the 60's.😄I absolutely love a lot of bands out here as well,but most of my favorites came from across the pond.Especially in the late 70's and 80's when I first discovered 2-Tone Ska.Bands like Madness,The Specials and The English Beat were so,and still are so amazing!☺️
"I'm going back to New Orleans , to wear that ball and chain" a great line which has a duel meaning. Prisoners wore a metal ball connected to a chain when they went out to work in groups so they couldn't run. The second meaning is a funny reference to having a wife (your ball and chain).

[Ball and chain was specifically a reference to getting an underage girl pregnant (the sin) and having to marry her thou you may not want to (the misery) or go to prison for 20 years( the ball and chain)]

Eric Burden and The Animals were part of "the British Invasion", just cashing in on the Beatles' look (and name, a bit - like the Monkees). But blues-rooted white soul, very well done indeed. Big lasting hit was "Sky Pilot", an anti-Vietnam-War anthem.

When was the last time you heard an organ in a rock 'n roll song? They were great. Read up on them - interesting story.
Victoria Becker Well, lots of bands used the organ on a regular basis: The Doors, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, Spencer Davis Group - and even bigger bands like Zeppelin, The Stones and Pink Floyd used it periodically. But yeah this is one of the best rock tunes to feature the organ.
I can name about 100 rock and roll songs with organs. But you don't often hear one take the lead like this.
