I was about to make the same comment. You'd think that would've been his _first_ instinct, given he shut it down when the place was getting a bit overcrowded, for so early in the game.
I like how John went on a whole-ass Raider exterminating sidequest in hopes of getting some extra settlers for Sanctuary when literally all he needed to do to get more settlers is turn the recruitment beacon back on which he had turned off in a previous episode because he felt that Sanctuary was getting a little overpopulated.
He could have also just built a beacon at Red Rocket because the beacon attracts a few settlers immediately when in an empty settlement, who could then be moved to Sanctuary.
As much as I enjoyed that, my favourite bit was when he started a plutonium reactor and then, out of fear it might explode, ran a good ten paces away and peeked at it from a doorway - the standard Fallout safety procedure in the event of imminent nuclear explosion.
The hat you gave Jake is hiding some of the fun of this mod. When the comm hub blew up and he said that eyebrows will grow back, he had actually lost his eyebrows. Jake's hair and face change throughout the story to reflect what has happened. It's a small detail, but a lovely one.
You say that, yet he walked past a giant red chest full of loot in a small room. Twice. And also a second giant red chest on the other side of the dungeon.
