Some of you may be wondering why I made this huge video on Pouf when I already covered him in my Royal Guards video. Well, the truth is that while that video isn’t bad, it really just scratches the surface on why Pouf is an incredible character. That one was made right at the beginning of my RUclips “career” and I’ve learned so much more about HxH, Pouf/Pitou/Youpi, story elements, video presentation and analysis since then so I felt the need to PROPERLY tackle the subject of one of my favourite characters. So think of this as a complete analysis of the topic (especially as this also discusses the dynamics of each Guard, not just Pouf). My Royal Guards video was the appetizer and this is the main course. I really hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed making this. Also - I’ve added some rewards to my Patreon after some expected losses due to my absence. Now $5+ Patrons have access to me tentative video topic list, $10+ patrons have access to the scripts for two of my upcoming videos, and $15+ Patrons have early access (1-2 days) to every video I upload. Many thanks to everyone who stuck with me during my hiatus.
This is just a thing I found out, not to criticise. I don't think Pouf and Muruem is aware of the Miniature Rose's poison. For some reason when I am listening at 2x speed, it sounds like you implies that.
Well, after he matured n stuff he was probably debating to himself weather letting the king know about komugi was best or not, since he had a mental breakdown once over the fact that he possibly couldn't protect the king due to his power (?) I'm a little fuzzy on the details but I believe he wants whatever is best for the king.
@@doctorarson8652 They all went through some developement. Youpi in particular developed into a more chivalrous character, that only has the Kings best interest at heart and using his power only for protecting the King. He believed that Komugi wasn't the best thing for the King. However, the difference between him and Pouf is that Pouf is more selfish, because he wants the King to be what he thinks the King should be.
Shaiapouf was surprisingly weak, to a point where i would call almost it a Plot Hole or something similar. He killed no One in the entire War, and was also never viewed as a Deadly Threat. While Shoot and Knuckle and others would have died against Youpi if they relaxed for a Second, Pouf was never able to produce even such a Thought in any Person at all. No one ever thought about him like that. Good Supporter, sure, maybe smart, ok, but weak as hell it seems. Morel even trapped him in his Smokey Jail, and he never even mentioned the option of simply killing him, as all other Royal Guards obviously and surely would have done. He was never an actual Threat for someones Life, and nobody treated him like that. Pitou and Youpi would have killed Morel and therefore freed themselves within 2 Seconds after being Sealed...
Like a foolish parent, Pouf focused so much on what he thought was best for his King, but thought little to nothing about Meruem’s own desires until it was already too late.
I agree, this is why I hate Pouf so much. The fact that he lied and manipulated Meruem makes him no right to be the king's royal guard. Pouf deserved a way worse death than what Pitou did imo, Pitou actually felt guilt and said sorry to gon.
Cryax Pouf never lied to Meruem, he just hid something from her. And he is as loyal as Pitou and Yupi, Meruem saw it with Spiritual Message. Among the royal guards, it is the one who has best fulfilled his role, and he has already had a very horrible death, we can not do worse ....
No youpi tried to hide komugi too but maybe that was because pouf told him to do it so he was just doing what he was told. Idk youpi is a pretty simple guy
I'm so glad to hear someone understand and dissect all of Shaiapouf's detail and nuance, instead of just dismissing him, saying "He was annoying, I hated him, I was happy when he died." Butterfly boy's character is genius.
@@Nimbus3690 Never heard of anyone liking him so I'm not surprised hearing that people hated him. He's at least most people's least favorite of all the Royal Guards.
A small feature was that even as pouf lay dying in the dirt, he dragged himself towards meruem as he walked away, leaving blood trails. A moment without grace, but full of sincerity
I broke down in tears aferre hearing that, it was such a relief even tho I knew how it would all end, this is truly one of the most beautifully written animes in history
Honestly it was the narrative scenes with him that annoyed me cause I already know what is on the center of this guy's mind. It had its pros and cons but most of the narration wasn't needed if it didn't tie directly into strategy.
I honestly like his evil schemes, I figured that it was genius to single handedly come up with such things, those who hate him are just too predictable.
I’m so sad. If I watch that crap again I’m going to bust out crying. His face when he died, it was not pleasant. I wanted him to live, seriously. I love him so much and I just wish the ants were still alive. He is my favorite character of all. He was made so well. And believe it or not, I sometimes relate to him.
Togashi is a fucking genius pure and simple. He managed to give Pouf more personality in this one arc than other manga writers can in entire series's. Pouf is so horrifically underrated and the last 30 seconds of this video beautifully summed him up as a tragic creature.
however this arc was like 60 episodes, whereas something like one punch man and death parades characters are amazing and lovable and both series only last 12 episodes
Hunter x Hunter has unarguably some of the best written villains in anime, another one I find particularly unnoticed would be Illumi, who while loving Killua massively spends the series attempting to stray Gon away from him. His influence within both Hisoka and Killua makes him such an important and influential character. As well as that, I love all of the protagonists and the relationships between them all, obviously Killua and Gon in particular, which are so well written. I feel like Hunter x Hunter goes unnoticed in many areas.
To think about it, Illumi kinda has the background story synonymous to some hero main protagonist. He loved his family, wanted to protect his brother from harm, and sought out to kill the creature that's been haunting his family and people. He seems to have good intentions but because of what he learned while growing up, he expresses it in extreme ways. If Killua didn't escape from that place, he would have probably turned out like Illumi.
In all honesty, when I first saw Pouf, I knew he would become my favorite Chimera Ant. And as I finished the arc, that has not changed. He really is a beautifully written character, and if anything, any love I had felt for him initially grew as the arc dragged on. In no way did I condone his actions and behavior; the love stemmed from just how complex this supposed 1-dimensional Chimera Ant could be. I was expecting him to stay pompous and elegant, but the ugly side of him really hammered in the final nail of the coffin that was my adoration for his very character. It pained me to see where he lay dead, how it was obvious that he had tried to use all his leftover strength to drag himself along, back to the palace-- back to where he was meant to be-- all the while being in excruciating pain and knowing this would be how he died and he couldn't do anything about it. He didn't go out fighting like Pitou did, he didn't die facing a threat like Youpi, he died whilst doing nothing that could benefit the King in Royal Guard standards. I have an overall weakness for characters like Shaiapouf; if I were younger, I would most definitely be on the "Pouf Hate Plane" but now that I'm able to appreciate characters like him, I can't find it in myself to even dislike him after all that he's done. I understand why others would hate him, but I cannot myself. I grew frustrated with him at times, and I wanted to give him a punch across the face more than once, but as you had stated before, being a well-written character does not necessarily mean that they're a likable character. It just so happens that the fact he is well-written is why he's so likable to me.
I agree! Pouf is a wonderfully tragic and beautiful character. I understand how some can join "Pouf Hate Plane", but like yourself, I cannot. His character deserves more recognition for its complexities and the fact that it is not one-dimensional like so many villains in current media. Pouf isn't a typical villain you forget existed after the arc ends like the one seen in the Greed Island Arc and instead he sticks with you for some time after.
He was okay. but he had no development like the other ants. Pitou showed human emotions, fear, and even when she/he was killed by Gon, her sheer devotion to the king remained in her nen to launch another attack at Gon. Youpi was the youngest out of all of them, he thought all that mattered was power. When he was fought Killua and Knuckles who were so far beneath his actual power but he couldn't a single hit, he had an internal monologuing with himself. All showing the maturation and development of the character, causing him to evolve to a power beyond belief. Pouf was the exact same the first day you met him, and the last day you saw him. Again, he was an okay character, not nearly wrriten on the level of Youpi and Pitou.
Lol....For now.... The Dark Continent Arc is already proving to be so much better. In terms of the massive cast that it juggles, and all the intricate plot threads that it plays with. Also aside from the hiatuses, the arc itself is very well paced. Far better than the intro for the C.A. The potential for the Succession War alone already overshadows the Chimera Arc. Needless to say when it gets to the D.C.
Whackashit Do you think Chrollo will die in the current arc or will he end up teaming up with the 4th Prince or something when the rest of the Phantom Troupe die ?
Whackashit The Dark Continent Expedition arc is still in it's beginning. Chimera Ant arc had the best characters, character development, writing, symbolism, themes and fights until now, calm down and don't call one better because it's pacing at the beginning is better.
Ahhh I'm so happy to see Pouf getting some attention, many write him off simply because they dislike him. But for being so despicable, it makes him such a grand villain indeed. Can't wait to see what you say about him!
It was spectacular, man! Beautifully written and said, nearly everything I've felt and picked up from the character but couldn't articulate well myself, while also delivering some stuff I didn't catch. As per usual, great vid~
I must admit, I rarely comment on videos but I feel like this needs to be said. I've looked through some of the comments (not all, so forgive me if it has been stated already) and still have yet to see mention of something that always strikes me about Shaiapouf: his appearance. I don't mean his flamboyant butterfly wings or his aristocratic outfits, but his actual physique. Too me, Shaiapouf is the one ant who looks more human than all the others. Change his skin color, take away his antennae and wings and he is human. As far as I can remember (it's been a while since I've watched/read the anime/manga), Pouf is the only ant that has human-looking hands with five fingers. I remember whenever Pouf was on screen I couldn't help but look at the way his hands are drawn and how completely human they are. This, to me, always seemed to be greatly juxtaposed to the rest of the ants, who had broad four fingered hands often with weird joints, feelers, or claws. In addition, the rest of Pouf's body also looks very human, since he lacks any exoskeleton joints like most of the ants. I'm not sure if anyone else really noticed this, but I don't think his design is any accident. Each scene in which he appears his human hands and human body always seem accentuated and contrasted with other ants in an almost jarring manner. I feel like this, as well as everything Aleczandxr mentioned, allude to the very real human traits that Pouf embodies.
Great observation! I think it ties in very well with what's said in the video. He rejects and despises humanity the most out of the ants yet he's arguably the most human among them (apart from Meruem).
Pouf dying felt like the premature shattering of my dreams. His uneventful death-- the helplessness that engulfed him at that moment. It perfectly mirrors that death of a person's ideals-- you can't help but accept it. But seriously, his and Youpi's are so heartbreaking...
Pouf, the Manipulator. What a missed Opportunity for Togashi to clear-up some Stuff about Manipulators. I thik as a literal Outsider (a different Species than Humans) he could have given some very, very casual Exposition. For example remarked how misnamed the Type is, confusing some: Its literally the Decision-Making-Type. All Decisions, all Control, comes from this Type. Well, at least he showed us that Micro-Sized Manipulation AND Ability-Granting (previously thought to be exclusive to the Specialist-Type) are totally possible though hard for Manipulators. ...Though even that went right above the heads of some Fans...
Ye. If we go by tropes, it'd be: Meruem - Big Bad, but then goes through Character Development, turning into an Anti-Villain, then enters a Heel Face Turn, and becomes an Anti-Hero. Neferpitou- The Dragon. This tropes doesn't make one evil; It just means they're someone's right hand. Pitou remains The Dragon throughout, because of his Undying Loyalty and Character Development, which let him follow Meruem after Meruem starts changing. Menthuthuyoupi- The Dragon, who is revealed to be a Noble Demon, and Blood Knight. He also goes through Character Development, but not because of his Undying Loyalty. Instead, it comes naturally and is caused only by his own thoughts. Turns into a Dragon With An Agenda through Pouf's influence. Shaiapouf- Starts off as another Dragon, then Slides off The Slippery Slope, which is his own form of Character Development (just not one that happens in a positive way), turning him into a Dragon With an Agenda while Meruem is Big Bad, and then he becomes Big Bad after Meruem's Heel Face Turn, though he remains The Dragon in regards to his relationship with Meruem. His influence on Youpi's view of Komugi also makes him a Greater Scope Villain. In the end, all four end with Alas, Poor Villain.
Aleczandxr, as a fellow writer, I can say with great confidence that your lyrical ability has improved yet again. This analysis had one of the most descriptive and concise scripts for any analysis, of recent memory, that you’ve ever written. Moreover, this in tandem with the on point, well paced editing made for an enthralling experience, as well as changed my perspective on Pouf’s characterization to a large extent. Well done, my friend.
I don't have time to really watch a lot of anime, but I have already written some scripts about old anime characters I always cherished that could be turned into vids sorta like this.
The scene where Pouf was on the border of insanity and just laughing while crying saying he isn't worth shit because he wasn't by the Kings side, then has the realization about Komugi... was one of the best in the whole anime, that moment really made me realize that this anime ain't like any other
How someone can make such professional, astounding, in-depth videos on anime characters is to me breath taking. What a beautiful piece of work this video was and all your other videos have been. Aleczandxr we thank you.
Pouf realizes that what he is trying to keep Meruem from is essentially the exact thing he's been trying to keep for himself, and as that thing is fundamentally based on love, the truer execution of that ideal is to allow yourself to wither away, and lose what you wanted and needed so that the one you love could have it. It's essentially a high-stakes romantic drama.
It's ethics. When a person with an extremely thinking mind and just one strict ideal goes through such a mind-wrenching dilemma, this is the result, for ethics will take foot in, and will eventually overthrow the one ideal, for the ideal itself is the ethics of the person, and at that point, what is one supposed to do, but to just give up, and cry as they have to say farewell to their dream?
I absolutely despise Pouf. Drove me to madness. He is one of the most unique villains I've ever seen and he needs more coverage. EDIT: Holy hotdogs dude, your editing is emotional. Threw that FF15 sadness in there perfectly. You can always tell you put a lot of thought into your work.
Pouf's human feature he was imbued with seems to be faith; his speeches resemble that of a preacher speaking on a pulpit and much of the iconography surrounding him is religiously minded ("spiritual message"). His belief in what his king can be surpasses that of what his king actually is. The duality of the character, where he goes between joy and depression, is indicative of someone grappling with their own cognitive dissonance - and how people of faith reconcile tough questions that challenge their core beliefs.
Pouf is the embodiment of worshiping an ideal without actually receiving the message, and without living up to that ideal. Pouf fails as a Royal Guard, because he's serving his own ideal image of a King, and not service Meruem or respecting Meruem's choice to be a different type of King. He's a fanatic for the image of a King he has in his mind, but completely ignores what his King actually wants. It's sadly duplicated at times with the religious and atheist alike, who purport to be part of a denomination or to have a higher moral standard, but don't live up to the actual ideals. Shit that's depressing. Pardon me while I think of that tweet about the dog that buys treats with green leaves similarly sized to dollar bills and other good and happy news.
No... Not faith, that is more of a coincidence, even if one togashi didn't mind to push for. No, the actual factor for pouf is "ideal" extremized just as much as pouf's empathy and motherly protection, pouf's idealistic mind is driven to such extremes it easily gets broken, as he develops such a complex mind, full of perfectly fitting cogs, that when just one gets dented, everything falls apart like an immense castle of cards. It's Actually not that rare in humans, be it ones that have been instilled an extreme ideal such as religious people or people with some specific mental disorders... In the end, pouf just wanted to be happy, he just didn't know how or why he should've strived for anything more than reaching happyness by following his one ideal, something I'm far too acquainted with, and yet that most people appear to not have problems conceptualizing and eventually even realizing. I feel so much pouf, he's such an evil and ugly character, but good god do i feel for him. Yes, i rooted for meruem to regain his memory. Yes, i wanted to see him die. Yes, he deserved to die... But god did it hurt to see all that again here, contextualized.
I don't know how you keep one upping yourself but your HxH analysis series is a masterpiece. You have put so much work into this and the passion shows in every video. You will never know how happy it makes me seeing what I consider to quite possibly be the best anime ever made being given such loving attention. I wish I could share these videos with the whole world, I tell all of my friends but you really deserve so much more attention. Keep up the good work brother you are one of a kind.
This was incredibly gratifying to read, thanks so much for saying so. This is far from a painstaking job (it's great, actually) but appreciative support like this that acknowledges the work I put in and values it is part of the reason I continue to do this. I really appreciate it.
I think the arc truly began to shine for me in watching the maddening way Pouf tried to juggle everything around him while becoming more and more desperate! Never a dull moment with him!
This must have taken so much time but if you ask me, every second was worth it. This is one of your best videos so far, keep doing what you're doing. Btw that little montage at the end was incredible
originally i disliked Pouf and couldn't fully apreciate the Chimera Ants because i was still in highschool when Hiatus x Hiatus was going over that arc and as an impresionable teenager all i could think of was how i wanted Netero to swatt some Cell-knockoff's butt, but after watching this video...i definitly feel i need to re-read HxH manga for a 5th time! Never before have i realized how Pouf encapsulates human's Belief and Idealization...and how much it irks me that i can sort of relate to him as a person that values greatly both faith and ideals. *we HxH fans need a Togashi apreciation day, he is too good of a writter in a medium where mediocre things such as "friendship beats everything cuz Fairy Tail" is/was popular Togashi comes to explore humanity at it's fullest, dwelling into the white, black and grey areas carried within our very lives and he isn't stopping...i really hope the hiatus will end before this year is over, I NEED ME MORE KAKKIN PRINCES SHENANIGANS!!!*
Herman Cillo I know it’s probably not going to happen but the one thing I want more than anything in anime is for them to continue that show once there’s more material in the manga
Chris H I want to see that happened too, and I think there's actually a possibility of that happening. Hunter X Hunter gained a lot of fandom from this newer anime, and that might be enough once they have a full Arc or two to adapt.
excuse me but fairy tail is a good anime and its not at all as popular as people think it is. not all animes are meant for teens and maybe they wanted to apeal idk to KIDS with fairy tail. Also friendship does help you through a lot of things so i dont see why that is considered bad, i dont see people complaining about other animes and cartoons that put friendship in first place ( do you also whine about mlp friendship is magic being all about friendship? ). also in fairy tail people did die multyple times and many bad things happened and the so called "power of friendship" couldnt save them so its not like it cuts the story and plot. i dont see why people think that anime can only be good if people die or get tortured in it
The self-inserting scenario you presented at around 16 minutes into the video made me understand Pouf so much more. I want to become a Manga Artist like Togashi, and the thought of that possibility slipping away due to forces outisde my control would break me. Amazing way of putting me into his shoes, Aleczandxr!
Absolutely brilliant. I just have no words. I'm so glad there are other people out there who realize just how profound and extremely well-done Shaiapouf is. Seriously, as a writer, I can only hope that I can create characters and do them justice like this.
Pouf, the Manipulator. What a missed Opportunity for Togashi to clear-up some Stuff about Manipulators. I felt so much empathy for this fictional character thanks to your video. I feel so sorry for him now, it is truly a tragedy story that only shows how much of a genius Togashi can be.
Few characters were able to make me feel this way... this empathy, this relatability and connection, Honestly, I don't know what's more to applaud, togashi's genius for creating pouf or alec's capacity to make people see his true potential and humanity to people.
I just realized now, but all three of the royal guards died the opposite of how they lived. Pouf was all about the prestige and nobility, but died and was forgotten with no ceremony. Youpi died from the poison in front of an enemy, which is opposite to his desire to fight for honor and to die a warrior. Pitou died brutally and without any love, which was opposite to the empathetic character she had become Edit: hunter x hunter is mid tho
Pitou wasn’t really empathetic enough to be able to say that was the person she had became in the end. She was sorry for what gon had dealt with bc of her ONLY bc he allowed for her to finish healing Komugi.
Though Pouf’s character isn’t my favorite, his story throughout the Arc is astounding. His kind of duality is very hard to accomplish to make people understand what he represents. Very well done character
That ending gave me chills. This video gave me a far greater appreciation for his character. I had always simply been annoyed by him but your characterization of him has certainly made me rethink those thoughts, I will be interested in reevaluating his actions while I rewatch the series for the second time.
27:40-27:55 Now if that ain't the human condition idk what is *BALWS IN THE CORNER* Seriously tho, the layers upon layers upon layers upon layers upon layers of character interaction and themes that add on to and enrich each other in this arc is something I don't imagine will ever be replicated outside of HxH. Not a single character is wasted and they all add to the depth of literally all the others which is insane consider how many there are. Praise be to ToGODshi's name. On a personal note I see alot of myself in pouf, as all good villains I would imagine, and he's one of the greatest cautionary tales out there for people who tend to get stuck in there heads and obsess over ideas imo
I never thought The Hunter X Hunter 2011 Dickriding Association would have this well-structured of a comment, But you can say that prejudgment based on appearances *IS* part of the human condition, I guess.
Yo! What's up, Silly Willy? Haven't seen you in like a month or something! We should really ask Hoodie and Zero to make a discord chat so that we can chat with each other off the live stream!
Pouf is driven mad by devoting himself to his image of an ideal king, instead of to his king's ideals. I'm hard pressed to think of other characters offhand who fell into the same trap, but I'm sure they are the characters confronted with their crimes done in the name of the king who give answers like "but I had to, to make sure you were seen as a proper king." or "But I thought that's what you wanted as my king." after being given no instructions or actual indication that the crimes were what the king wanted.
As somebody who believes that loyalty is the absolute apex of virtue, the Royal Guard are especially beautiful to me for pretty obvious reasons. To me, Pouf acts as the failure of loyalty through very human failings with his loyalty not to the King, but to the idea of the King. This is a very real thing that happens to a lot of people, such as being romantically in love with the idea of somebody rather than the person themselves. But ultimately this prevents the individual from truly connecting with the object of their loyalty, and ultimately causes one to fail to see what really matters. So too was it with Pouf who, right until the end, failed to see what Meruem truly needed, and ultimately turned Pouf against Meruem's true wishes. To me, Pouf isn't somebody to be hated, but somebody to be pitied. This does contrast heavily with Pitou who I believe achieves perfect loyalty in the way she prioritises Meruem's emotions and state of mind over his journey of conquest, the direct opposite of Pouf's form of loyalty, which is very much why she always struck a chord with me. In contrast to Pouf who dies with his ideals shattered and his face in the dirt in an unceremonious death, Pitou's final moments are a mark of pride and validation for her ideals in stark contrast to Pouf's, as not once does she ever lose sight of what truly matters, unlike Pouf did. As Gon maims himself in order to gain the power to defeat her, she dies knowing that he's wasted this single-use on her rather than on her King, and dies happy and content, ultimately being the only one of the Royal Guards who dies nobly, which despite the dark tone of the arc is a surprisingly hopeful message, giving her validation in her ideals for her true loyalty. With how much she contrasts Pitou and acts largely as his opposite thematically, I don't think it's a coincidence that when Meruem asks the Guard for his name, Pouf answers first and Pitou last, placing their foreshadowed and stated ideals on opposite sides, with the more balanced Youpi in the middle. Speaking of Youpi, while he doesn't achieve the same level of perfect loyalty that Pitou does, he also doesn't achieve the same level of ideological failure as Pouf and so his death neither validates his ideals like Pitou, nor destroys them like Pouf. Youpi may seem simplistic as a result of this, but he's also the truest to real life as he embodies neither extreme, instead finding a more internal fulfillment with his dedication to honour, an ideal that has been present in humans throughout history which highlights his more balanced and realistic ideal compared to Pitou and Pouf's. Ultimately while he is never rewarded for this like Pitou is through validation, he's not punished for this either like Pouf is and ultimately dies a more normal death compared to the other two, thus embodying no extreme. Ultimately to me, the fates of the Royal Guard serve as an ideological examination of the concept of loyalty, what Togashi displays as an ideal form of loyalty in the form of empathy, what he displays as the dangers of misplaced loyalty through Pouf's overzealous and ultimately self-destructive ideals, and a middle ground that grounds the other two in reality and prevents the ultimate thesis from being too extreme to represent real human nature in the form of Youpi. As the Chimera Ant arc is an examination on human nature, it makes sense to me that the deaths of three of the most important Chimera Ants must serve as a conclusion to the thesis as well as to their baseline stories.
To sum up Meruem and his three guardians, I'd say Pitou learns to be human through empathy in embracing someone else's priority, Youpi through honor in serving, Pouf through resignation against fate, and Meruem through the feeling of belonging. Pitou begins as a playful psychopath and ends as a caring haunted woman. Youpi, a mindless servant, becomes a noble soul, serving with purpose. Pouf sees only his ideal, before he witnesses the need for a more moderate view of things you cannot choose. And Meruem is born as the absolute power, power itself, without the name of a person, until he learns the joy of suffering alongside someone else... and receives his name... A name is the first thing that someone else gives you, and it is, by essence, the very thing you cannot choose by yourself, nor change. It is something you cannot "rule". It is the only thing that is yours but that other people use more than you do. Those four characters all experienced humanity as something to share with others, with its deep misery and with different kinds of love. This arc, this story, is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Thank you Aleczandxr, for helping me get a clearer understanding of it. I'm even more touched and in awe with the chimera ant arc than I was before :)
I always loved that Pouf had two different themes in the soundtrack. One to represent his elegant and calm side, and the other to represent his madness.
Ahh I've been waiting for your next hxh and it does not disappoint, I always thought Pouf was a amazingly written character but i never quite knew how to put into words why until now
This is definitely my favorite video of yours. It struck me emotionally and made me care for a character I initially hated. Thank you for the insightful analysis
This is beautifully worded!...I’m glad that someone sees the greatness of Pouf I always said that Pouf was the villain of the arc from the start he suffered from his own predetermined illusion of Mereum...it’s amazing how 6 month olds can show such depth.
Renard Dubois yea I got confused because of how fast there plan was moving that I completely forgot that only 2 months had past😂 that’s even more impressive when you think about Meruem.
I love his physical character design. Being such an elegant, seeming well put together, guard makes (more so that the other 2) his downfall so much more realistic and impactful. It is often those that are the most fragile.
We all hated him but let's admit it, he was one of the most well written characters in all of hxh. His behavior is not okay but I can feel his pain. He didn't want meruem to become human but little did he know that his behavior ; greed, rage, possessiveness and selfishness were all very humane traits
I loved this, however while i agreed with 99% of what you said there is something i think you should re-think about. you said pouf wasnt aware of the growing humany in the king but i think pouf knew before anyone else, thats why he asks the king why he doesnt just kill the girl - that way the king would be the best. I mean his main ability is to see nen in such detail that he can see their emotions and can even make an educated guess as to someones thoughts because of this. I believe that dead eyed stare constantly on his face ( like when meruem asked what his name was) is because hes aware, hes deeply troubled by it and tries hard to convince the king that his name doesnt matter. thats why he thinks "king, you must stop" and when meruem talks about the potential in humans and how strong he is for being able to crush that potential pouf is so happy he cries, and feels shame for doubting his king (although the doubts would return after meruem grows closer to komugi) . i also think his ability to see meruems emotions is why he was way more hostile and fearfull of komugi than the other royal guards and is why he almost killed her, because "she is dangerous". i totally agree with everything else you said :)
Thank you for doing this. Pouf is my favourite RG and it's so annoying having to explain myself over and over when I say I love him and his depth because people just hate him so much. I did hate him on my first HxH run, but on the second he became hands down my favourite character, and on the third I fell in love even more. The CA arc is so genius, and it's Pouf who made it what it is. I love my gorgeous drama queen! Granted, I'd also like to mention how he wanted Meruem as far away from Komugi as he could, but after Youpi dies his perspective shifts, even if momentarily, and he deeply panics with tears in his eyes asking himself where Pitou is, asking "Pitou... Pitou... where are you!? Pitou!" and that desperate last scream of her name as he trembles and tears prickle his eyes made me realise Meruem wasn't the only important one in his life. For a moment, he stopped caring about the fact Pitou being there would mean Meruem remembering Komugi. All he wanted, at that moment, was for her to be back safely because Youpi's death alarmed him immensely. He just wanted his species to thrive. Komugi threatened that desire--it was only natural for Pouf to react the way he did. More people need to appreciate him!
This was beautiful! I always liked him as an antagonist. But this made me actually feel sad for him. His character is the manifestation of the grim and beautiful side of humanity!
Wonderful video Aleczandxr! Pouf is a wonderfully written and tragic character and I am glad others recognize the same! The work you put into this video is truly amazing. Thank you for a great analysis.
I am so grateful that you made this video. I have never truly been able to put Pouf's incredible character dynamics into words and you have done it beautifully as usual. I really hope that you do more Hunter x Hunter videos in the near future!!

Loved this video. Thanks for creating this! No matter how much time passes, it amazes me how much more my appreciation for the genius of HxH grows through diving deeper into the story & the minds of its characters.
Ikr this RUclips creator is amazing I am really glad he is a genuine HxH fan who fully understands amd and appreciate the story amd and characters. I gotta agree, he got the brains of the most villain out of series itself he also doesn't waste time, in fact he uses time as his advantage on taking Gon and friends down. Kudos to Pouf, he earned my respect. 🦋
My dude, you write, speak and communicate your ideas really well. I actually appreciate that your videos often stretch past 10 minutes and I enjoy every minute of them. Excellent analysis on a character I never saw such depth in
Thanks! I try to just make sure I'm satisfied with how thoroughly I covered a topic and don'y pay much attention to length until it's done. Obviously I try not to be needlessly long (like I've been in the past) but I think this one was good in that aspect.
Another beautiful analysis. The music, script and editing all bring this together, masterfully enough to make me shed a manly tear. This is truly as artist as the show itself. Now I will have to play the 1 month waiting game for another quality video.
I just discover your channel with this video, it is amazing, I can't wait to watch all your work! And THANK YOU so much for subtitles, I am French and I need subtitles to understand, it is so much easier! Thank you so much. You have a new subscriber.
When I first saw Shaiapouf in the anime, I felt a strong connection to him even when he was trying to kill Komuji. I couldn't explain why I felt such a connection to him, but this video helped to sort out my feelings, and the fact is I see a lot of myself in him, and what could possibly happen/has happened to me. I have been in co-depedant relationships with an extremely horrible person because I idealize them and was willing to sacrifice anything for them, but it only left me burnt and hurt in the end. It is not exactly the same thing, but in this video you helped me sort out my own emotions and nature, so I thank you or this.
Man your editing.. are you trying to kill me. Srsly more analysis videos need to edit in significant anime scenes, it hits all the emotional buttons. Or maybe they do, I am certainly not watching many xD
As someone who has both witnessed, and been in abusive relationships, Pouf is terrifying. He is the perfect example of why loving, and understanding someone and their motivation does not equal allowing that person to stay in one's life.
Dude , I discovered your channel yesterday night .... and I'm absolutely mind blown ..... thank you for your videos really , they're all amazing ... you can't imagine how much you're helping me feel better and less anxious in this period in which I'm passing my exams . good job keep up the good work !

It's fucked up that pouf tried to educate someone smarter and stronger than him.
That... Is a PERFECT analogy of Pouf

Togashi is a fucking genius pure and simple. He managed to give Pouf more personality in this one arc than other manga writers can in entire series's. Pouf is so horrifically underrated and the last 30 seconds of this video beautifully summed him up as a tragic creature.
however this arc was like 60 episodes, whereas something like one punch man and death parades characters are amazing and lovable and both series only last 12 episodes
momo penguins the royal guards didn’t show up or get characterization until like 2/3 through the arc

Fucking manga spoilers
@@Uchiha-fi4ij where
@@Uchiha-fi4ij where? Lol
There’s only one protagonist. Gon
I feel the same way! I also love his charactarization, how dramatic and over the top he is
Oh my gosh I didn’t even think about the bloodstains from him trying to drag himself back to the castle. It hurts my heart :(
xLemonade same :(
He was okay. but he had no development like the other ants. Again, he was an okay character, not nearly wrriten on the level of Youpi and Pitou.
..and that's why Chimera Ant Arc deserves to be called Togashi's magnum opus
Lol....For now....
The Dark Continent Arc is already proving to be so much better. In terms of the massive cast that it juggles, and all the intricate plot threads that it plays with. Also aside from the hiatuses, the arc itself is very well paced. Far better than the intro for the C.A. The potential for the Succession War alone already overshadows the Chimera Arc. Needless to say when it gets to the D.C.
Whackashit Do you think Chrollo will die in the current arc or will he end up teaming up with the 4th Prince or something when the rest of the Phantom Troupe die ?
for all we know they could end up fighting and allying kurapika to defeat a greater threat
Whackashit
The Dark Continent Expedition arc is still in it's beginning. Chimera Ant arc had the best characters, character development, writing, symbolism, themes and fights until now, calm down and don't call one better because it's pacing at the beginning is better.
And if it wasn't for the Chimera Ant arc, it would have been the Yorknew City arc, which was freaking awesome as well!
Ahhh I'm so happy to see Pouf getting some attention, many write him off simply because they dislike him. But for being so despicable, it makes him such a grand villain indeed. Can't wait to see what you say about him!

Good catch
Great observation! I think it ties in very well with what's said in the video. He rejects and despises humanity the most out of the ants yet he's arguably the most human among them (apart from Meruem).
Why his skin? Looks like a normal skin color to me because I’ve seen people with pale skin before.

JK Network Cause he is
He was the one pulling the strings.
Yeah, by the time Meruem became more human it was clear.
Ye. If we go by tropes, it'd be:
Meruem - Big Bad, but then goes through Character Development, turning into an Anti-Villain, then enters a Heel Face Turn, and becomes an Anti-Hero.

Vandell I agree! Very well put
Hence the name of his ability, "Spiritual Message".
U writing a thesis on pouf ? I’m with it
I don't know how you keep one upping yourself but your HxH analysis series is a masterpiece.
I loved the fact that he tried to kill komugi but suddenly stopped and played violin to suppress his anger
Thank you so much, it did take quite a bit of time. I really appreciate it as always, thanks for showing your support so often :)
my fav is the hisoka analysis. thats awesome too
I fucking love Shaiapouf, every scene where he is its just amazing.
I really enjoyed his crazyness devotion and contradictions.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching.
Pouf is the best 😂😂
originally i disliked Pouf and couldn't fully apreciate the Chimera Ants because i was still in highschool when Hiatus x Hiatus was going over that arc and as an impresionable teenager all i could think of was how i wanted Netero to swatt some Cell-knockoff's butt, but after watching this video...i definitly feel i need to re-read HxH manga for a 5th time!
The anime version of HxH that started more recently is a good option too. It's a quite good adaptation of the Manga.
Herman Cillo I know it’s probably not going to happen but the one thing I want more than anything in anime is for them to continue that show once there’s more material in the manga
Chris H I want to see that happened too, and I think there's actually a possibility of that happening.
Hunter X Hunter gained a lot of fandom from this newer anime, and that might be enough once they have a full Arc or two to adapt.
oh hell yeah, i wanna see the Kakkin arc completed and animated!
excuse me but fairy tail is a good anime and its not at all as popular as people think it is. not all animes are meant for teens and maybe they wanted to apeal idk to KIDS with fairy tail.
Me at Yorkshin arc: SO COOOOOOL!!!
Me at Chimera arc:, SO DEEEEEEEEEEP!!!
Me to you: SO TRUUEEEEE
Absolutely brilliant. I just have no words. I'm so glad there are other people out there who realize just how profound and extremely well-done Shaiapouf is. Seriously, as a writer, I can only hope that I can create characters and do them justice like this.
:-) Thanks as ever Saoshe.
Aleczandxr Anytime. Seriously. You're my favorite anime RUclips person. Even more so now that you've done Shaiapouf justice.
Saoshe Ninami your a writer? Cool so am I. I'm working on my own story now.
I'm trying to be a writer too. Well a comic book writer but a writer no less and I hope I can one day even come close to togashi's level of writing.
I'm glad there's a vid on this guy, he's underrated af.
Pouf, the Manipulator. What a missed Opportunity for Togashi
to clear-up some Stuff about Manipulators.
I thik as a literal Outsider (a different Species than Humans) he could have given some
very, very casual Exposition.
For example remarked how misnamed the Type is, confusing some: Its literally the
Decision-Making-Type.
All Decisions, all Control, comes from this Type.
Well, at least he showed us that Micro-Sized Manipulation AND Ability-Granting (previously thought
to be exclusive to the Specialist-Type) are totally possible though hard for Manipulators.
...Though even that went right above the heads of some Fans...
Pitou died brutally and without any love, which was opposite to the empathetic character she had become
Edit: hunter x hunter is mid tho
Their deaths kinda made me sad
Oh wow
I never even thought about that
This story never ceases to amaze me, togashi created a masterpiece
Pitou had an empathetic character?
Pitou wasn’t really empathetic enough to be able to say that was the person she had became in the end. She was sorry for what gon had dealt with bc of her ONLY bc he allowed for her to finish healing Komugi.
@@Dhruv-yu2jo yeah I’m the end Pitou was actually sorry she couldn’t bring Kite back and fulfill her promise to Gon.
27:40-27:55 Now if that ain't the human condition idk what is
*BALWS IN THE CORNER*
Seriously tho, the layers upon layers upon layers upon layers upon layers of character interaction and themes that add on to and enrich each other in this arc is something I don't imagine will ever be replicated outside of HxH.
This arc has more layers than an onion and an ogre combined.
“Not a single character is waisted”
Cough Pokkle cough
Wow this is longer than my English essay
this is beautiful. goodness, such a great analysis.
Wow that was an incredibly analysis! 👌👌👌
The best is to find comments like this one
That's excellent to hear, thanks for letting me know. It's definitely one of my favourites, one of the ones I'm most proud of. Thanks for watching.
I don't know why but pouf is one of my favorite anime caracters
Aizen put it best "Admiration is the furthest sentiment from understanding"
The editing was slick in this video during the beginning.
Thank you!
*during the entire video
This is beautifully worded!...I’m glad that someone sees the greatness of Pouf I always said that Pouf was the villain of the arc from the start he suffered from his own predetermined illusion of Mereum...it’s amazing how 6 month olds can show such depth.
I'd say Pouf was more like 1 month and a half old..
a bit younger than Welphin and Ikalgo , themselves a bit younger than Leol, Cheetu, Zazan, etc..
Renard Dubois yea I got confused because of how fast there plan was moving that I completely forgot that only 2 months had past😂 that’s even more impressive when you think about Meruem.
@@katenkyokotsu4417 the ants were no joke they were nuked for a reason.
This video was all I needed, I'm so happy to see that someone appreciates Pouf's character this much, just like I do. Thank you so much for this.
Thank you for watching!
Yes! Yes, you beautiful, beautiful man! Give me more Hunter X Hunter
I just did ^_^
Pouf: the true antagonist of the chimera ant arc
Waiting for you to upload a HxH vid is as painful as waiting for HxH itself to come back.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers.
This is one of my favorite videos that you've created Aleczandxr, i also loved the different ost's you used for the topics you touched upon.
That was some fast 28 minutes, enjoyed;)
This was beautiful! I always liked him as an antagonist. But this made me actually feel sad for him. His character is the manifestation of the grim and beautiful side of humanity!
Thank you! And too true. He's an incredibly unlikeable character and truly detestable, but he's so sad conceptually due to that.
Wonderful video Aleczandxr! Pouf is a wonderfully written and tragic character and I am glad others recognize the same! The work you put into this video is truly amazing. Thank you for a great analysis.
You're very welcome! I'm happy you enjoyed so much.
16:03 luckily I don't have a single goal beside staying alive until the HxH manga finishes
THIS WAS SOOOOO GOOD FUUUUUCK 😍😍😍
Thank you for unpacking my favorite character, these were exactly my thoughts about Poufu, but now they're articulated in a clear and concise manner.
No worries mate, thanks for watching.
"Favourite character"
*has Pariston in pfp*
I am so grateful that you made this video. I have never truly been able to put Pouf's incredible character dynamics into words and you have done it beautifully as usual. I really hope that you do more Hunter x Hunter videos in the near future!!
Thanks, that's great to hear. And well.. I've been doing HxH videos consistently since I started RUclips and haven't stopped yet so that should be an indication as to the future as well. I don't know what you mean by near future, mind.
Loved this video. Thanks for creating this! No matter how much time passes, it amazes me how much more my appreciation for the genius of HxH grows through diving deeper into the story & the minds of its characters.
You’re welcome, I’m happy that you enjoyed it!
I dont know how many times I have watched this video. It's great.
Thanks!
Wow, this was amazing. It's as eye-opening as your Chrollo video.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! That's great to hear that you think so.
Pouf very underrated
just like HxH, i need to watch your videos many times to understand everything in them
In don't what to say except thank you, it was a wonderful video and you literally made me cry
My pleasure :)
Ikr this RUclips creator is amazing I am really glad he is a genuine HxH fan who fully understands amd and appreciate the story amd and characters. It's a shame this channel is underrated, today's people mostly care about insane Animations fightings and huge boobies so most of them doesn't care about Hunter X Hunter
I gotta agree, he got the brains of the most villain out of series itself he also doesn't waste time, in fact he uses time as his advantage on taking Gon and friends down. Kudos to Pouf, he earned my respect. 🦋
Ive been waiting on this video for a long while!
The Anime Dude Same
My dude, you write, speak and communicate your ideas really well.
Aw, thanks so much. And now that my schedules cleared up, you won’t have to wait a month. Next video should be out within 2 weeks.
Thanks for making a video about one of my favourite characters in the series, not gonna lie, part of me was rooting for Scumbag Pouf.
Thanks for watching.
Man, I love every video you put out.
This arc was so beautiful I love shaiapouf definitely my favorite hunter x hunter character
As someone who has both witnessed, and been in abusive relationships, Pouf is terrifying. He is the perfect example of why loving, and understanding someone and their motivation does not equal allowing that person to stay in one's life.
I am as fascinated by your work as I am envious of it. Great job
Thanks as always mate.
That comment section will be good to read
Why? Because of the title?
Bobby Zamora discussion
Yep, rather than in gogoanime, the site I watched hxh, and most all commenters just dismissed him as an annoying character.
Watching this while on lunch break. 👌 Prefect release timing.
*Perfect
Dude , I discovered your channel yesterday night .... and I'm absolutely mind blown ..... thank you for your videos really , they're all amazing ... you can't imagine how much you're helping me feel better and less anxious in this period in which I'm passing my exams . good job keep up the good work !
That’s amazing to hear, I’m so glad I can help in that way! Thanks for watching!
That's why it is fine that Togashi takes years to create these arcs...great video as always.😎
Thanks pal.
