    Hi Joel! Many thanks for your really brilliant tutorials! Some months back, my family made the switch from the Android and PC world to the Apple ecosystem. So, now we have the iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch, Mac and what not. With your help and lots of coffee I have managed to get everything working and syncing, and it‘s great to see how seamlessly these devices work together. But I still do have some questions:
    1) Is it possible to make a complete backup of our iPhones (12 mini, 12 Pro Max) and iPads (Air 4, Pro 2021) directly to an external SSD or do I always have to make a detour via a Mac or iCloud?
    2) What about backing up just the photos library? Is there a similar way as you described in your video when just dragging and dropping the library folder located on a Mac onto an external SSD? I am asking this just because all the other stuff backed up on iCloud are limited in size but my photos library is of 200 GB in total, so getting everything back from the cloud to my iPad would take several days even with a fast internet connection.
    3) This question is related to the earlier one: in order to have a wifi connection at my work place, the IT division had to instal “stuff“ onto my iPad so that I get an automatic wifi connection when entering the company buildings. I am no expert in this field and maybe a little paranoid, but this installation of “stuff“ took almost an hour and I just can‘t get rid of the thought that there might have been more installed on my device than just the wifi codes. So, I would like to reset the whole device just to get rid of everything and install a “clean“ backup made before the “stuff“ was installed (I did not make any iCloud backups since my iPad was in the hands of the IT division). With your helpful videos that is not a problem, but just to get the photo library (and GoPro library and LumaFusion library) back onto the device would take a long time. So, that means back to question 2. If you say, just reset it to factory settings and reinstall everything back from the “clean“ iCloud backup, than I‘ll do it.
    4) Is there a way to have the complete photos library on multiple devices which are not registered under the same AppleID? I saw your tutorial about sharing smart albums, but if everyone in my family would like to have access to all photos in my library on their devices, is there a way? I thought that the family sharing functionality would do the trick, but I do not manage to get it set up that way.
    So, these are my questions in order to get to the next level in Apple ecosystem expertise. I would really appreciate it, if you would find the time to answer my questions!
    Stay safe!
    Kind regards
    Mika

      Sounds like you've had a lot of fun recently @Michael-Peter Godenau! Welcome to the Apple Family!
      Ok...you have a long list here to respond to...I'll do my best...
      1. iCloud for Mobile Devices and Finder on Mac are really the only two main options when it comes to a traditional backup for Apple Devices. But keep in mind, depending if you're using some cloud services, it may not sync what you think it says. I'll link a few videos as I go along for reference incase you haven't seen them.
      iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices!
      ruclips.net/video/7ep9pREplD8/видео.html
      How to BACKUP iCLOUD PHOTOS! Options for your Mac, iPhone and iPad! Cloud or No Cloud!
      ruclips.net/video/pWZZlYU62ts/видео.html
      2. View the link directly above. Technically when iCloud Photos turned on, it's not included in an iCloud Backup and really not in a backup on the Mac. Your best bet is to get an SanDisk iXpand flash drive as a physical alternative for backing up photos. It has it's quarks, but is better than nothing.
      Because iCloud Photos is designed to sync the whole photos library (just like every other Photo cloud system) you really have to have enough cloud storage to accommodate your growing library. Keep in mind you can do a family plan and collectively share 2TB of storage. Each user will share that space. I personally do that right now with a total of 6 of us on the plan. Just keep in mind that there will come a day when the 2TB gets full and I'm hoping to kick the kids off the family plan by then and they can break off the plan and pay for their own storage. :-)
      Also keep in mind that if you're worried about physical space on the iPhone, iPad or Mac, you can also turn on the setting for "Optimize device Storage". I have another video that relates to this focused on the iPad, but it will be the same on the iPhone and Mac.
      Optimizing iPhone & iPad Storage - How to FREE UP SPACE on my iPhone, iPad, or Mac for photos!
      ruclips.net/video/bGmN-C-6W7A/видео.html
      3. I work in IT as my full time gig, so I'm very familiar with what they installed...They installed a Profile on your device most likely. You can find this in the following location:
      Settings > General > VPN & Device Management
      Here is were you would probably see what they installed and you could remove it if it's still there. Note this will also tell you a little information on what the profile did.
      Now let's say you've already wiped your phone back to factory settings and didn't have an iCloud Backup, you would just sign back into iCloud and anything that you were syncing would automatically come back; like your Photos, Contacts, Calendars, etc. But you would have to manually re-install some apps and change any settings you had back to what they were.
      4. This is my biggest wish list for @Apple to do! They need to play catch up with @Google and create Family Photo sharing feature. iCloud Shared Photo albums is great and all, but there are still limitations to it. I'm hoping that Apple gets on board with this in the near future, because as you've noticed, iCloud Photo Libraries are only linked to the same Apple ID, so it is not possible to share one collective iCloud Photo Library with two or more Apple ID's.
      Ok...I think I may have answered everything, I hope!
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

    Are you able to select what you want to have backed up opposed to it backing up everything on your phone? I currently use iCloud to back up my phone but I would like my iTunes Music library backed up to an external drive. How do I do that? When you hit Back Up Now, it just starts backing up and doesn't ask you where you want the back up to be stored I don't think. I would want it to go directly to an external drive if possible. Thoughts.

I'm really concerned since my family uses and relies on the availability of apple email we've saved over years. How do we backup fully our email so we can restore it as it was when it "disappears". Joel. THANK YOU for this. I'm in the process of an activation lock removal and I've been warned I will lose EVERYTHING on the phone (data and it will remove all Apple ID's for a full reset) when they do it in the next 30 days (that's how long I have to give them to do this). Will I be able to bring my information BACK to the phone bypassing ALL things iPhone so that I don't reactivate the Apple ID issue I'm currently having?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад

      Hi @Ruann Larson! I've been through that process with others before.
      It is so VERY VERY IMPORTANT to have a recovery contact or not lose the password for an Apple ID. Apple does take it seriously and it takes a long time for this process.
      At the end of the 30 days, you should get an email or notification with a link to reset the password for the Apple ID account that was locked. Then you should be able to go to the device and enter the correct updated password.
      And yes, if you do a factory reset on your device, it will erase everything on it and it will act as though you just purchased the device.
      The main thing going forward is to really never lose/forget the password.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

    Thanks for the nice video !
    But I do have a question,
    So , if something accidentally happened to my phone and my photos on iPhone got erased , does it mean my iCloud photos are also being deleted , if I haven’t done an iTunes backup before?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад +1

      Hi @Manori Perera!
      So if you go to the following locations, you're able to reset your iPhone/iPad back to factory settings which results in deleting everything off your device.
      iOS14:
      Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
      iOS15:
      Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings
      If this were to happen, you're just removing the content from the device itself, not from iCloud. So it wouldn't delete any photos or videos or anything as long as you're not going into those particular apps and deleting that specific content.
      Prime example would be if you were to sell your old device. You can have full confidence that you can erase it and when you sign into a new iPhone/iPad with your iCloud account it will bring all the content that you're syncing with iCloud. *note you have to be sure that you're actually using iCloud and syncing all of the options that you want.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated!

      Hey @N H!
      I will link an article below that may be helpful and answer your question.
      Based on my understanding, backups to either Finder or iTunes would not include photos from iCloud or really anything from iCloud as it’s often stored in the cloud and may not be cached locally on the device.
      I know for sure that when you’re not using iCloud for photos and you do a backup all photos are on there.

      @@Learnwithjoel Thank you for your response. In one of your videos I heard you say that connecting your phone with a cable to iTunes and backing up will make a backup identical to what is on your phone. So that won't include photos if they are on iCloud too? If I have iCloud turned OFF, will it then backup the photos too?
      I just read the article and I think it is confirming that if the photos are not on iCloud they will be on the iTunes backup.... Looking forward to your confirmation.

      Hi @SatelliteGalaxy,
      Are you referring to an iCloud backup?
      Are the movies downloaded ones from Apple iTunes Store? That would make sense that they are not backed up as they are always available to you.
      Once you purchase any content from Apple (music, movies, apps), they are always associated to your Apple ID account. You can delete at anytime and always re-download or stream that content (assuming you have internet).

    • @Learnwithjoel

      Hey @Discover by travel!
      I think you're on the right track. I always like having some sort of cloud system syncing my photos (not necessarily for a backup, but just in the event something happens to my physical device, I can log back in and get all my content), in addition to something locally like an external hard drive using Time Machine.
      I need to make a video on Time Machine, but in the grand scheme of things, it makes it really easy to recover deleted items and also really easy to turn on and just forget about it. Apple does need some improvement for how to choose what is and isn't backed up, but that's a whole other story!
      So from it sounds like where you're at, you're in pretty good shape. Are you using Time Machine, or another piece of software on your external, or are you just manually copying?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад +1

      Hey @Juan Torres!
      So yes, according to Apple, if someone is using iCloud Photos, they are not included in a backup if you're backing up to iCloud. If you're backing up to a computer and the photos are set to download the originals, those should be included as they're physically on the device, but not for the cloud.
      A picture used for your wallpaper would be included in the backup, even if the picture was later deleted in the photo library.

    Backing up to a computer WITH encryption also backs up ALL of your online credentials, so you don’t have to log into EVERYTHING after a restore. If you restore from a backup without encryption you will need to log in to google, youtube, Netflix, Facebook etc. individually.

      So very true @Patrick Young! Thanks for adding that to the conversation as I did not discuss encryption all that much! It is convenient that it saves that info, but also can be a pain to add another password specific to the encryption, but I guess that's the point!
      Here is a support article from Apple with further information if it helps anyone else out!

      @@Learnwithjoel Does iCloud back up back up music and everything else on the phone?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад

      @@mikearkous8379 Usually any music on there is from iTunes which that is all tied to your purchase history or subscription, so you would not lose that content. iCloud does not backup everything like most users think. If you haven't seen it yet, i've actually made a video dedicated to iCloud backup that i'll link below:

    so how do I access my text message once I have backed up my I phone on to a Windows pc

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  Год назад

      Hi @Legal Beagle!
      So the primary purpose of an iPhone/iPad backup is to restore the data to another iPhone or iPad if your current one gets broken.
      By default there is no way to see the messages on a windows computer that I'm aware of, it would only be stored in the iTunes backup.
      However, there are some 3rd party apps that do this. I have not used any of them personally, but I have read some reviews and many offer a trial version.
      Here are two as an example:
      imazing.com
      itoolab.com
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!

    when i plug my phone up to my laptop it says it power surge the usb port and when i open up itunes my phone wont even be listed and my phone wont even be listed as a device in the windows system menu. Is there anything I can do to get music to the music library on iphone without having to play them from the "files app"? The closest thing I found was using a 3rd party app to import. And thats the last resort.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад

      Hey @TSUJACK!
      I may not have the best answer, but I will attempt....
      I would start off by trying a different USB port in addition to a different cable and make sure your Windows laptop is plugged into power. It sound like you're getting a message saying there may not be enough power for the device that is plugged in?
      Secondly, when you open up iTunes on your Windows computer is it up to date? Also sounds like it doesn't see your iPhone as an option to select?
      I believe that on the windows when iTunes is not seeing a device, you can go into the "Device Manager" and remove a device and force it to forget it and then when you open iTunes again, it may prompt you to view it again.
      Support article that talks about Force PC to forget a device to reconnect:
      answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/force-pc-to-forget-device-connected-via-usb/5a9e5be9-ff86-413b-8d07-9d67a4808b39
      Also, where is the music from that you're wanting to get onto your iPhone? Is it digitally purchased or is it from CD's that you've manually imported, or other digital files that you've acquired somehow?
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

      @@Learnwithjoel The first thing I did, also different usb cords didn't work. Every time I plug the iphone up to the laptop it either power surge message or doesnt register the device on both the pc menu and itunes.
      Itunes is up to date etc.
      Went through device manager as my second response to any hardware problem.
      It doesn't even register as a device in device manager. If a registry entry were anywhere registered I would have found it by now.
      The only registered usb drives are the actual ones built intop the laptop. I've uninstalled and reinstalled them twice already.
      I've imported music from CDs, digital music files, etc before that I've all had for years and this is the first time this has happened.
      Also, I uploaded a song to icloud as a test got it to the files app, then it wouldn't let me put it in the music library on the iphone.
      Movies and stuff downloaded directly from the itunes and apps from the app store work just fine.
      There seems to be a problem with all microsoft products that use the cloud in general.

      If you don't have a computer, your next best thing is a cloud service like iCloud, Google or Microsoft, or a flash drive that you can plug directly into your device. I have a few other videos that explain some of this that I will reference below:

      Do you have the first generation iPhone SE, or the 2020 model iPhone SE?
      Does the iPhone just randomly restart then on you without doing anything? Are you updated with the latest software of iOS 14.8 or iOS 15?
      Which part of this video are you trying to do? Backup to iCloud? Are you backing up using iTunes on a Mac or PC, or are you trying to use Finder on a Mac!

    In the segment where he tries to explain iPhone backup to the iCloud, he doesn't make it clear. He says sync when he means backup. If photos are synced, are they backed up?? I wouldn't figure that out watching his explanation. Not specific enough.

    You were pretty dismissive of Windows systems. So, if MACs are so intuitive, why is there so much confusion about iTunes backups, and iCloud backups, and Finder backups, and iCloud syncing, and etc, etc. There are many other areas of MAC non-intuitiveness. I like MACS but there is a large learning curve no matter what system you choose. I am a Windows user but when I bought a MAC for teaching purposes, I had a lot to learn and found the "intuitive" label to be exaggerated. Novices think that they can buy a MAC, turn it on, and off they go. Wrong! Great video nonetheless and I gave it a thumbs up.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 года назад

      Hi @Jiim Salih! I won't necessarily disagree with you. The word intuitive is not equal for everyone.
      I have had my fair share of using Windows in my IT world, and having a strong use on both operating systems, yes I am totally dismissive of Windows and all the third party hardware.
      However I completely agree that the topics of iTunes, iCloud and syncing can be very confusing. I'm never really been a fan of iTunes, and still am on the fence with Apple Music. Non the less, iCloud and many other cloud services can be confusing and not as intuitive.
      With any system, it takes time, patience, purpose and the want to learn. If you don't have any of that, I would say any user will struggle.
      I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
