Most Excellent, another great video to practice defensive striking! You always have solid advice for potential real world encounters. Please keep up the videos!
What is a real world encounter! The person is going to wait for you strike, like a heavy bag. Maybe a person under the influence of alcohol you could. But drugs probably not. A body can a lot of punishment. Try to strike a dog. You may do it once but it'll be wary afterwards.
As a 67-year-old Martial Artist who always carry's a walking stick or cane, I love your videos and have recently subscribed to your channel! Great Job!!! (Thugs need to beware of Old Geezers carrying sticks!)
Bayonet thrust to the windpipe ....Downward strike to the attackers wrist followed up by a strike to the knees or if needed straight up into the wedding tackle ...job done
Well, personally after researching some "real" knife attacks I picked up the Jo and started reworking all my old martial arts training to counter this growing threat. So, your idea here is sound...I would just encourage you to go further with pressure testing against a committed attacker. Personally I would use the length of the walking stick to my advantage, keeping distance, to strike out the knees and target the weapon hand.....and not commit to entering in further until I have disarmed and injured the attacker. Just my two cents...perhaps I'll put up a video with my students sometime. Anyway, love the content....keep them coming. :)
right. knife is a short range tool. cane has good reach. if at all possible dont let them close enough to use the knife. personally i think ppl should carry both a gun and something like oc spray. if ur attacked, best to have as many options as you can
The jo and my favorite , the hanbo are ideal self defense tools , portable and deadly, they let you mai rain distance. If you have other self defense training , and can pair them up with kicking techniques you are in better shape. Self defense ideally is a tiered approach and lets you go from empty hand to impact weapons, edged weapons and if you are able to carry, firearms. Nice technique
Thanks. Police officers testify as to how quickly the distance can close between an offender with a knife and a victim, so fast they cannot even draw their weapon before getting stabbed. A knife is far scarier than people realize.
very true indeed 21 ft on average is the distance a attacker run in the time it takes to unholster and get sightpicture and shoot. just remember if your attacker has a knife. expect to be cut or stabbed. its going to happen even to the most trained person in the world. knife fighting is bloody and the attacks quick as well as multidirectional with swift changes. there is no real defense that will fully eliminate you being injured. you just have to accept it and continue on. with that said remember. a knife is an intimate weapon and most often not shown until close contact occurs. never let anyone into your space otherwise this technique and all others are completely useless. majority of knife attack victims never even saw the knife. many dont realize they are stabbed right away either.
Quite a few viewers have commented that they would prefer to use a stick as a distance tool - swinging it like a baseball bat and so on against an aggressor with a knife. Baseball style swings seem pretty inefficient for self defence, but maybe there is some merit in that sort of distance. IMO, more important than skillfully choosing your distance is being able to strike immediately in whatever space you've currently got, since knife attacks are so sudden.
Glad to see the addition of the firearm. I am old and slow so a stick would be my 1st line of defense. It might give me time to draw my pistol if it was still necessary.
I've been saying for a while now that a good stick is the best defence tool available to most people - both against humans and dogs. Seems you might also have done videos on shorter (more urban) walking sticks. I shall look out for those too. I have subscribed.
Thanks for the videos, I recently had hip sergury and felt vulnerable, I received a walking stick for Christmas and thinking this can be great for self defense. However I didn't know how to use it properly and correctly till I saw your videos. Practice makes perfect and will do my best to get better. Thanks again!
Great video and a new subscriber! I walk a lot and I have permit to carry a firearm, but sometimes you may need to buy some time. I actually bought a carbon fiber walking stick which was expensive, but you can crack a cinder block with it, so I feel safe when it is in my hands. I am an ex handgun competitor and trainer, so I feel very sure of my handgun skills, but I really need to work on my staff skills. Another reason I carry a staff? I once saved myself from a nasty mauling by a very aggressive dog with my walking stick. They don't like getting whacked any more than we do, it is great for keeping an aggressive animal at a safe distance from you. Thanks for the good info!
Thank you! These videos are great. Would you consider making a video for some of us who might be more hesitant to defend aggressively? I can practice the actions, but worry how I might be mentally unprepared to do what needs to be done. How does one mentally prepare for possible attacks?
I have always been involved with martial art and various things....... such as I am a competitive pistol shooter. Never thought about the stick. Now I am!
Thanks for the video! If the attacker seems to have seen this kind of video and doesn't react to the low feint thrust, is there value in just turning that feint into a thrust and jabbing him hard into the lower ribs? If a defender has moved offline away from the knife hand, the attacker should be in a bad position to deliver an effective slash. I see where the thrust to the face is a more effective strike, but if the attacker seems to ignore the low feint entirely, I'd be worried that he was expecting the thrust to the face. In a winter scenario where everyone is wearing heavier clothing, maybe a thrust against a heavy coat can't be very effective. If the attacker is wearing lighter clothing, could a good lower rib thrust cause some pain and possibly help to maintain distance?
Any thoughts on just stepping back and throwing baseball swings? Keeping distance seems to be a smart move as if we miss a strike he could close the gap and stab the life right out of us. Stepping back gives us a chance to miss a number of strikes and then when he comes into range he could get hit by two or even three swings, at which point you could begin this finishing combo. Also, it gives much more opportunity for the aggressor to disengage out of fear. I would love to see some tests in full protective gear so we have a clear idea of what is actually effective.
I think 9 times out of 10 the stick should win just for the reach advantage. Agreed , you deliver a solid hit keep going till you've made toothpicks out of your stick and he is finished 👌 💯 👍
so long as ur attacker doesnt know a lil on fighting and closes the gap making that can useless for swinging. i still say gun and oc spray should be carried by all
I think people should be reminded in these videos that a walking stick IS NOT a superior weapon in most circumstances. It is a weapon that in most circumstances you can carry, which makes it useful. But I would much rather have a knife or a gun, weapons that have immediate fight stopping potential and lethality. You are most likey going to lose against a commited opponent with a knife or a gun if all you have is a stick. The idea is to become a target that is way more trouble than is worth, and to escape as soon as possible. Most likely you will not get the chance to cause serious damage to an attacker, and that should not be your goal.
If you noticed we got off the like and delivered a setup motion before jabbing the face. Getting off the line and quickly striking the face is more effective because while the attacker is adjusting to your movement he is receiving powerful counter strike.
Does wood from Olive trees make a good hiking staff? Wild figs and Olive trees are the most common in my area. Can someone help? I want to make a hiking stuff. Any advices, would be really appriciated. Thanks in advance
In germany we use usually hazel as walking staffs, because hazel is hard BUT lightweight. You should consider, that you walk perhaps for hours with this stick. A stick should carry your weight and not you should carry the heavy stick all around. I would search for a relatively lightweight stick wich is relatively hard as well. Because after hours of walking your stick should still be light in your hands. AND with a lightweight stick you are faster AND it's no big deal to use it 1 handed if you have to So, if you walk much and long, you should probably look for a lightweight but still hard wood, like hazel is.
Wondering why you are using the jab or poke? It allows you to use the length of your staff, maintain your distance, and is much harder to defend than a horizontal circular strike. This is especially effective if you were able to move off-line and then can poke at sensitive areas of the leg groin abdomen and throat. I’m just thinking about defending against a rabid dog or mountain lion. You want to keep them out of striking distance and your staff gives you that ability. Strait you demonstrated are effective and powerful but require that you be quite close and assume that they are not holding anything in their hands as well.
@@TheModernDefender lol, I think BOB would beg to differ, good vids though, I have been working with my Shepperd's staff a lot lately, if you work with one also I think everyone would enjoy it :)

I am in all probability most likely to be confronted on the streets by some young punk with a kitchen knife, as scared of me as I am of him as the kids round here carry knives because they foolishly believe it protects them against other kids carrying knives. When I was a kid myself I used to believe all sorts of nonsense. I am no match in a fight with an athletic youth, but you should see my walking sticks which I make. They have antler handles strong enough to put a hole in a wooden door. Put it this way, if you wanted to step out in front of me and pull a knife on me, would you feel lucky, you just have to look at my stick and say no.

Need to train with an attacker who is attempting to close the distance and keeps the knife close to their body, who will look yo creep in and grab you into the knife, as well as the wild slashing attacker
I guarantee a stick is a better weapon than a knife if you know how to fight. Im a black belt in korean tae kwon do so my feet are pretty good already but the stick keeps distance and is good for taking out a leg or break a jaw or anything that my feet could do. I could imagine a stuck being able to ward off 2 guys but never let them get behind you
I like your videos but I must comment here that there are many different factors that come into play. If this was a person showing the knife as a threat, then sure, your approach would be useful. However, if the attacker is within the reactionary gap of your stick then he could parry with an arm and get the knife into you. I mean it’s academic but unless you are aware of the attacker coming and you have the distance, dealing with a knife ‘attack’-not a threat is a very different proposition.
I do agree you must maintain your reactionary gap and close distance rapidly when you start your driving strike to the face. Once inside it's difficult to react fast enough to counter, for both involved.
Having studied Aïkido (and trained with a 4’ Jo/staff), would like to see a few more scenarios. His grips and movement wasn’t the best. A general attacker with a knife is going to strike either from an overhand motion or upward thrust. Would like to know his training background. Be careful, not all videos are full proof. Even martial art instructors will tell you to run and fight only if necessary. He had plenty of space to flee.
Being retired law Enforcement I was wondering why you don't remove the major threat 1st , the knife. By doing that a broken wrist or arm would stop and subdue the offender. If he continues the attack then anything is fair game. When I go for a hike I always have a sturdy walking stick with me. It has been very good deterrent for aggressive dogs. At times I am also armed but I always have the walking stick , never leave home without it.
Thats not a bad idea. I considered doing that for this video. Problem is if you miss or don't make good contact with the hand you are a sitting duck for their counter. Getting off the line and striking them first is a good setup for striking the offending limb. Either way, I'm not gonna argue with you wanting to strike the hand first.
@@TheModernDefender .... I was curious about that. In reality isn't it the millisecond decision for the type of corrective / defensive action you have to make. Lawyers , Juries and Judges get months to decide if you made the right choice.

surely not too far fetched.. so many of the hikers out there prowling around with knife out looking for those new victims, even several days walk out. such a menace to our society. lucky for us, they first stand still holding the knife far out. ...or is this video for people who want to go out and bully some hikers?
