    My neighbours kept their wellies upside down on wellie holders outside their back door. They were puzzled when, one at a time, they started disappearing, until our local sheep farmer told them one day, that he was baffled by the pile of assorted wellies that was building up next to the sheepdog kennels.😂

      My collie hates cleaning cloths - any scourer or micro fibre cloth that's left on the floor for a millisecond - out into the garden and bury it as deep as you can. Sadly she does it to my hats and gloves too if she get the chance

    One thing I am reminded of over and over again when I am socializing with sheepdogs is their exquisite sensitivity. I think that lies at the heart of some of their behaviours that are most incomprehensible to us. I have a rescue dog whose mother was a Border Collie and his Dad was an Anatolian Shepherd. He does the "snap" thing when he thinks supper is late, and when he wants to be brushed. Please give Queen Kate cuddles from me. She's just such a great dog, you are both so lucky to have each other! 🥰🐾🐾🐾❤️🙏

    I find that the quirkiest people and animals are the most loyal and I typically have a deeper connection with them. I've heard that from horse trainers quite often. Their best horses had silly little quirks, but they never tried to break those quirks. From experience, they learned that if they tried to break them of those silly quirks the "spirit" or "light" would leave and the connection would be lost. The little things matter ❤

  • @medea27
    @medea27 4 месяца назад +5

    "Weaponised timidness" is such an amazing description, I instantly knew _exactly_ the behaviour you're talking about! LOL Smart, sensitive dogs like Kate are an absolute joy & there's something truly special about the bond you form. 💜
    And while I've only just found your content & don't have full context from other videos, Kate's 'snapping' @ 2:00 strikes me as a "silent bark" of sorts... a quiet way of communicating loudly, if that makes any sense.
    You can tell she's intentionally making a tapping sound with her teeth each time but I can't hear any other vocalisations bubbling up, like a lot of dogs will do when they are snapping playfully. And if she's very sensitive to loud noise & big movement, she may have developed this as a way to communicate frustration, excitement, or to grab attention without barking & startling the cows & sheep... and now it's just evolved into a little game with you. 😊
    They all have their wonderful quirks, as do we! My Weimaraner was a big sook & he'd "talk" to me constantly through grumbling & huffing... he'd even huff & snore when he was asleep! 😂 While in contrast, a friend's very sensitive Dalmatian would rarely vocalise but we developed a greeting where she'd 'smile' & chatter her teeth together to let me know how happy she was... my friend loved seeing people's reaction when we'd bump into each other in public, seeing this woman & a dog smiling & chattering at each other! 😏

    Sean, I love your channel because I love watching your border collies as they work and run like the wind. It's hard now because I just lost my 14 yr. old male BC to old age just a month ago, just one month shy of his 15th birthday. His back legs had atrophied over the past couple of years, but he had been able to push himself up from a lying position to get up on all fours and his hind legs would swing into action. I would take him to the vet every couple of months for a laser treatment on his spine and hind legs and a shot for his arthritis, but it would only delay the inevitable. On Sunday, September 8, we had a bit of cooler weather, and I saw my Scotty push the door open from my den to my patio and go out into the grass where he lay down and was enjoying the cooler weather. His head was up and he looked relaxed. I began working on cooking a pot roast in my kitchen, and was occupied with that for a bit over an hour, and when I looked out the window, he was not where I had last seen him. I went into the back yard and found him lying next to my tool shed, and he was panting heavily trying to get up but couldn't. His front legs had given out and he just collapsed. I picked him up and tried to get him to stand but he collapsed again. I brought him inside and got a bag of ice and put it on his neck, trying to cool him down as he was overheated. I remembered our little kiddie wading pool and got it out of my shed and put a couple inches of water in it and laid him in it and with my cupped hand splashed water over his back and head. It worked and cooled him down. Then I laid him on a towel on my patio to dry him off and eventually carried him inside and put him on his bed in the corner of my den. My wife was out of town for the night and when she got back that afternoon, Scotty tried to rally a bit when he saw her, but he still couldn't stand. He refused water and food. I comforted him in the evening and lay next to him on his bed and stroked his head and told him I loved him, and we fully expected that he would pass in the night, but he was still alive the next morning. His time had come. I called our vet and we took him there later in the morning to end his suffering. God, it was so hard, and it never gets easier even though I had been through this before with several of our dogs over the years. This dog was just so special to me. My wife was with me at the vet clinic, and when the aide came in to shave his leg to insert the i. v., I kissed him on the head and said my goodbye. I just couldn't stay until the very end. It was too hard. I loved that dog like a child and he was my constant companion for nearly 15 years. He had amazing herding instincts but he was just our family pet. I live in a city and had no sheep for him to herd. The man we got him from would go to Wales and Scotland every few years to buy his breeding dogs, and according to this man, my dog's great-great grandfather on the dame's side was an international sheepherding champion from Scotland. That's why we named him Scotty. The house still seems empty without him here, as it's just my wife and me and our cat now. My two kids are grown and gone with their own families now, and we're in our mid-70's and will just have to cherish the incredible memories and photos we have from our life with this amazing Border Collie named Scotty. Hopefully, the grief will pass in time but he will never be forgotten. I have such admiration for Border Collies, they are truly astounding creatures. Scotty so resembled your dogs. My best to you and your wife and your amazing dogs, from south Louisiana.

    She's acting precious and social. Kate snapping her jaw when you look at her is similar to a dog we had. It wasn't aggressive it was a game of cutesy, like a form of Doggie Dare; "I'll try and scare you when you look at me..okay?". Whenever you leaned in, our dog would hide his head in his bankie.

    We love Kate! Our Border Collie LOVES dog parks where she rounds up the dogs and gets loads of laughs and petting. She snaps only at puppies especially poodles and doodles (?) We think she wants to keep them in line. (Puppies aren't to enter until they're 8 months old, though often ignored by owners.) We weren't looking for a Border Collie, but long story short, we were her last chance and were allowed to adopt her only because we're familiar with BCs, having lived with two working collies on a sheep farm in college. We've taught our her countless "jobs". One is taking a ball to the top of the stairs, letting go and running down to catch it. Give your dogs hugs from us! Thank you

    Lovely Kate is the spitting image of my precious Lacey that made it to within a week of 16 years old. She was the daughter of Imp. Mirk that won the Futurity here in the US and Imp. Flo that was the Purina Pro finals #4 one year. I only ran her in Novice trials because I was a novice but her breeding and instincts made us look like pros. She placed in the top 3 in every trial I ran her in. She used to try to run behind the big floor print big screen TV we had in the day to try to get behind the sheep when we’d watch One Man and His Dog episodes. What a sweet, sweet girl. I’ll miss her always even as my current 3 year old Winston enjoys your wonderful videos with me here on our couch in Ohio tonight.

      @J1mInOH 6 месяцев назад +1

      Correction…She placed top 3 in all trials we ran in except one in MN where she had only lost one point through the cross-drive where a ewe turned on her and would not budge. Lace gave her a bit and then she nipped (like a shark bite a spectator told me) to get her moving. That was the end of that run and I still don’t blame her for giving that ewe the what for. 😊

    Kate is adorable, quirks and all. Reminds me of a couple of things similar to my bordie collie who recently passed Jet. He did the snappy of the mouth and lost part of his bottom front tooth by trying to 'wrangle' a chainsaw when he was young, and laying low and watching and waiting. I truly believe he would have been a fantastic sheep dog. We have another from a different breader, he is fast. I think Kate is my favourite. Thank you again for sharing her with us. Aww, she’s just like Tessa, the first Border Collie my hubby and me had in 1985 until 1999. She was a failed sheep dog, but she was our first ‘baby girl’. I consequently gave birth to our first daughter in 1987 who was brought up with her and who became a registered veterinary nurse inspired by Tessa. We have since had two more Border Collies, who have since passed away, but had great lives. I have only just discovered this channel and love it 👍🏼

    I live in rural Yamhill county where the countryside here reminds me so much of your countryside. So, it amuses me to see your fleece shirt was made by a company near here. Love watching your dogs ❤

    When my BC, Matisse, got over excited he would nip. There’s a LOT of power behind those tiny nips and the bruise would last for months. In general, he was a darling. Thanks Sean.

    Mom had a 2 day yard sale several years ago and asked if she could keep my Border Collie overnight so she could leave her stuff out and not have to put it out again the next day. Sunday morning when mom went out she discovered that during the night Delilah had shoplifted all of the stuffed animals and they were never seen again!
