  • The opening number for a musical is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL for making or breaking an entire show - and because of this, Welcome to Rosa's may have DESTROYED Disney's Wish. This opening number does not come close to the musical numbers in the classic Disney movies, but why? This Video Essay will break down lyrics, rhythm issues and characterization, as well as show examples of how these elements could be 'fixed'.

      To be fair, a lot of potential was there:
      1. Disney's second black lead and one of their few mixed-race leads (I can only think of Hiro and Mirabel as other ones). Obviously this doesn't make the story better, but it was still amazing to include.
      2. A pop artist doing the music (I know people roll their eyes, but there have been musicals that succeed at making great songs in the pop vein).
      3. A complex villain and message
      4. A possible romance (I recall Star and Asha being referred to as "soulmates," though lookibg back, IDK if it was purposefully meant to sound romantic or not) and one of the few ones where the lead or the love interests have magic powers.
      5. A DISTINCT European setting. Most fantasy stories go for a "generic European" vibe, so making it Iberian-influenced was awesome--even if that might not have been the best decision since their last musical was Colombian (not that Spain and Colombia are the same, but the similarities may have led to the music feeling a bit too familiar too soon).

      How about Beauty and the Beast as well since that has an amazing opening number that not only introduces the story BUT also managed to explain who the main character is, which is what Wish failed to do, with “Welcome To Rosas” we’re constantly told about Magnifico and the wishes even though it’s already been talked about in the book, so I think the rewritten version should focus more on the environment and how people react to Asha as well as knowing her a bit more.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer Месяц назад +10

      @@ThatBoyShads I think BATB was one of the influences used, and it's also an upbeat number, not quite as mysterious or foreboding as I would want.

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch

      They could get away with having an upbeat number if they kept and refined the opening storybook narration about Magnificio, like BatB does that foreboding thing with the Beast but then Belle as the opening song. I think they actually could have done a compromise and have a number like Frozen 2. You have Anna who is very upbeat about how things are not changing whereas Elsa feels that mysterious call for change. You could have the people of Rosas be that peppy-upbeat vibe but have Asha be the person who knows something is wrong. That way we have the best of everything and it shows the contrast between the brainwashed adults and how Asha is aware of the danger.

    I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I thought that the line in "Tangled" where Flynn Rider or Eugene says "sorry boys, I don't sing" was a sign that Disney was slowly losing touch. Same in Moana when Maui says "if you start singing, I'm gonna throw up." It's like for the sake of comedy they are slowly forgetting that singing in order to convey powerful emotions is a very sacred art when it comes to their films.

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +72

      That’s a very interesting idea: I feel like there could be a whole video about that haha. I guess cliff notes is that I think it works for Tangled especially because the lyricist most likely wrote it. It’s very in character for Flynn and he immediately gets a hostile reaction to the fact he said that.
      With Maui it’s weird because it’s in the script and also like…. He sings earlier. So it’s okay with him to do it but not Moana 😭😭😭 I think what they mean is that he doesn’t want to hear about her feelings and that means her singing - but Moana is a little bit too “aware” of other Disney movies at points so I agree with the idea that the problem started there. Like Tangled works because it makes sense in universe whereas Moana characters make references as if they know other Disney princesses and other Disney movies exist.

    • @_Lyricris_
      @_Lyricris_ Месяц назад +60

      Yeah i think that in tangled, it was actually a loving nod to the musical aspects of disney films, since flynn is categorically shown as maintaining this cool uncaring image, and then he takes part in one of the most emotional numbers in the movie entirely voluntarily. It's part of his arc! It's everything after tangled that only sees this front that he puts up and then expects us to agree with it because it's funny and they're missing the whole point

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +53

      Yeah I totally agree. Flynn is "too cool" for growing emotionally attached to people because deep down the one thing money can't change about him is being alone. That's even why his dream is about being on an island all alone, because he'd rather pretend that's what he really wants instead of admitting he does want home/love/family but doesn't think other people think him of worthy of that. Or he doesn't think he's good enough.
      That's the difference (usually) between a script writer doing something and a musician doing something. It's almost like, when musical theatre people joke about musical theatre it's usually funny because we make jokes from place of loving ribbing. But when actors or film people make fun of musicals it comes off as mean because they are usually demeaning the "silliness" of musical theatre.

    Your rewrite could even add an extra stab of heartbreak later on in the story after Asha finds out the truth about the wishes and has to go to the wish ceremony. She would have to see the people SHE convinced to move to Rosa's give up their wishes under the guise that it is a positive thing, and she would feel that stab of guilt that she was Magnifico's useful idiot in leading them to give up something so precious, which further motivates her to do something about it
    Also it lends the opening number a dark irony upon rewatches. Now that we know that living in Rosas isn't all sunshine and rainbows, there can be a sinister underbelly to all the celebrations that seemed so cheerful on the surface

    16:20 It could've also served as a nudge to The Lion King and how Mufasa says that the kings of the past look down on them from the stars and eventually comes down to speak with him son after his death. It would also make the line in This Wish, "I look up at the stars to guide me", have more meaning. She could believe that her father is watching over her through the stars. The even if Star himself isn't her father, it could've been hinted that he was sent by him.

      Plus, there’s already the line of “the way you always taught me” in the same song, referring to her father. So having the stars hold this spiritual meaning could make the song about her asking for guidance in a more impactful way. It makes sense that she would look to the stars since they hold a deeper spiritual meaning. And she knows that, especially with the alchemist rewrite angle, her father would never stand for what’s happening to their people.

    I don’t think the characters can NOT know that they forget their wish when they give it up. I mean that wouldn’t work. The story is at 18 you give up your wish (if you want but everyone does). So you’d have groups of 17/18 year olds mixing (like the story has with Simon) and so how would you explain the 17 year olds going “hey friend. You gave up your wish yesterday. How was it?” Because they’re nervous. The 18 year old would immediately realize they forgot it. It would only work if the wish giving up ceremony was a super secret.

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +30

      I think it could work in the context of “You can’t tell anyone what you wish for or it won’t come true!” - like that‘s very old Disney. And so other people (like your friends) wouldn’t know what your wish is, and maybe Magnificio could program that to be the default response with magic. Like I think there’s a totally a way for them to not realize they forgot through magic and having some surface level thoughts / default responses planted in there by Magnificio to stop thinking about it.
      The thing about people becoming boring though is definitely weird because apparently only Simon is like that, everyone else is fine LOL. But I feel like that should probably have to do with how important your Wish is to your personality. Like the guy who wants to have long hair probably has other hobbies. Whereas Saba’s wish should mess him up because that’s kinda a “core memory” situation imo. But I think they wanted that to be when you become an adult you lose joy and hope and that’s part of growing up, but they just didn’t go for it as a theme. This could be fixed by having people just be complacent instead of being “boring”, like having people seem very agreeable and malleable afterwards.

      We used to be best buddies
      And now we're not
      I wish you would tell me why
      Do you wanna build a snowman?
      It doesn't have to be a snowman!
      Compared to
      Please, I know you're in there
      People are asking where you've been
      They say, "Have courage", and I'm trying to
      I'm right out here for you
      Just let me in
      We only have each other
      It's just you and me
      What are we gonna do?
      Do you wanna build a snowman?
      Like the rhyme structure is the same but it’s the word choice. “It’s like you’ve gone away!” Or “and now we’re not…” Vs “People are asking where you’ve been… they say have courage” etc. You can tell how they captured how a child speaks Vs an adult. Child Anna is very… blunt almost. Like she just says things that come into her mind as they are but adult Anna is trying to reach Elsa and trying different strategies in a tangible way. She starts with “people are asking about you” and when that doesn’t work she tries to express that Anna is here for her, with whatever she’s feeling.

    Welcome to Rosas is trying to be The Family Madrigal so badly. But like you pointed out it’s missing the theme. They heard Mirabelle introducing her family and were like”got it.” They missed that the song is asking what Mirabelle’s power is and ultimately how she fits in with her family. It also sets up the Bruno mystery. You could completely cut out Welcome to Rosas and the movie would be the same. That was kind of the problem with all of the songs.

    • @appelofdoom8211

      the family madrigal also sets up the fact that the Madrigals are basically using their powers to work day in day out. You see the mom just feeding people in a line, Louisa is running all over the darn place which sets up surface pressure as well as introducing the entire cast and explaining their powers. it's a very efficient musical number when you think about it.

    1:01:27 I'm not an expert on the field but I do know that the script and dialog/sound design comes first, the animation is modeled after the voice actors's deliveries (look at all the improv Robin Williams did for the genie in Alladin) so my hipothesis is this: They told Julia Mickaels to write the song early in developement and didn't give her the finished script to read, so she worked with what she had which I think was just a vague summary of the general idea, something like "This girl is giving a tour of this city called rosas, she really loves this place, it's got magic, she has a grandfather who is important to the plot so add that and there's this king that the people love"

      This is why it’s so insane to me because that’s about what I thought in terms of the process (especially in Lion King too there’s a line that was improv’ed, like the “drag and do the hula” one). But this movie made me doubt whether 3D was like that LMAO.
      Yeah I agree with you - I don’t think she got to read the script. And I don’t think she understood what she was allowed to do as the songwriter. Like Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics but he was also a producer for the movies he worked on, he has some level of creative control. Which is ideally how it should be because the script and the songs ARE the story.

In just around 5 minutes, it introduces us to our main character and what she wants' the setting and how the main character feels about it and how the people in said setting feels about the main character, and the villein and his motivations. and it does all of this without at all feeling overloaded or like an exposition dump in any way. I legit just thought it was 'generic fantasy kingdom land'. Contrasted with El Dorado where I definitely knew right away it started in Spain... Perhaps I'm just dumb but it just seems like the film had so little detail and flavor that its location just didn't come across at all.

    Both are self absorbed and think quickly
    They also both already have power, but their arcs focus on them getting more power in the monarchy.
    The big difference is that Preminger is consistant. He isnt given a sob backstory, he just consistantly works with the cards he has, and he almost won, being defeted by the protagonists being a bit smarter.
    Magnifico was givin a tragic backstory, originally made to look like a reasonable adult, then he gets possessed and beaten with the power of music. Thats it.

      He doesn’t say:
      Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
      And through the roofs and gables I can see them
      And every day they shout and scold and go about their lives

      @AppleStrawberryLove Месяц назад +6

      Graduating with a degree in 2D animation. You're pretty close. Concept art, music/lyrics, and early story is actually more of a simultaneous thing. Like everyone is working on their particular part at the same time. Usually when you're at storyboarding (which an animatic is just a storyboard in a video form), you have a good idea of where you are going, but some of the specifics may not be all there yet. Like, sometimes designs will still change a bit, some songs may get cut or changed still, and some story beats and scenes may still change. However, you are right that by the time you're getting to actual animation, most of these are nearly finished. So by this point, the music should be have some finished recordings, but some may still be in the recording process. Because yeah, not all scenes are worked in the order you see them in, and many of them are worked at the same time, but not all. So how much is exactly done can vary based on the actual production scheduling.

    Every animation has a different pipeline, the pipeline has to conform with the tools and style used in the production and every animation has a different combination of tools and styles. HOWEVER, the sound HAS TO BE MADE BEFORE THE ANIMATION, because the step BEFORE animation in the pipeline is ALWAYS the animatic, and animatics NEED TO HAVE SOUND. Sometimes they make a "step" audio (like the animators reading the script out loud instead of the voice actors) so the animatic can be made before the official sound is ready, but it has to be extremely similar to the official one because if they don't match they'll need to reanimate the scene and this is expensive. So I'm like 95% sure that the song lyrics were ALREADY finished when they started the animation. The problem here wasn't the communication wall between the animators and song writers, but between song writers and script writers. The script writers just send a very simplified list of topics of what they planned to do with the script to the song writers, expecting that both the lyrics and the script could be made almost independently of each other, when in reality they should both be writed and planned TOGHETER. When the song writers tried to reach out the script writers were like "you have all you need to do this, we've already send you the bullet points list" and that's why the song lyrics don't match exactly with the story. The boringness of the visuals during the musical parts is fault of the story boarders. Storyboard is the spine of the animation process and will make our break a project.

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +3

      Yeah I totally agree with you. The script writers and the songwriters should have equal say in the story because they are the ones TELLING the story. I mentioned this to someone else but Howard Ashman (on The Little Mermaid and I think Beauty and the Beast as well) was a producer, so he had some creative say.
      I don’t even blame the storyboarders either because how were they really supposed to make “You wanna dance on beat?” Interesting? So in a sense it does come back to the lyrics. They definitely could have made some of the visuals more exciting but the lyrics are just inherently unexciting. And the script writers should have gave her the script to read and insert songs into like Howard Ashman would do, instead it does really feel like they gave her a summary of what they wanted but no deeper context.
      I don’t think this movie could have ever been a masterpiece with her writing but it could have been at least a solid 6/10 or something 😭😭😭😭

    “Belle” is a masterpiece in openings cuz it not only tells you who Belle is, it tells you what people think of her, it tells you about the setting, it tells you about Gaston and the conflict that’s going to arise, it foreshadows stuff for later, etc
    It’s a masterclass of storytelling and musical technique and has stuck with me for years
    Whereas Wish is…well yknow

    46:43 - When I think of Tangled, do you know what I think of? _Sunlight._ The warm summer sun peeking through the windows of Rapunzel's room, how it makes her skin, her hair, the grass glow with a radiance unmatched by any magic spell. It's thematically appropriate given all the solar imagery in the Kingdom of Corona, especially considering she's their missing princess; Rapunzel herself is warm, kind, comparable to a fair summer's day. (Mother Gothel in turn is the shadow of the night, a gaunt figure cloaked in dark colors who hides the truth from her stolen prize.)
    Despite its Mediterranean setting, Rosas lacks _any_ of that sunlit warmth. It's _cold_ and _blue_ and _sad._

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +1

      EXACTLY. I love it when the setting does not only have just... logical relevance but also thematic relevance! The Kingdom of Corona and how it looks is a physical manifestation of the conflict of the movie - Rapunzel wanting to step into the light and Mother Gothel keeping her locked up in the darkness. It's similar to Beauty and the Beast with the idea of how the Beast's Castle changes over time as his heart changes!

      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +8

      Yeah exactly. The reason why this works in Beauty and the Beast is because the opening narration is about the Beast while the opening is about Belle. Or in the really old Disney movies with the storybook, like Cinderella, it’s more of a prologue song that establishes where we’re going while the opening credits of the movie roll. They don’t need a story book opening about Magnificio & Rosas… and a song about the same thing. They could have kept the storybook if they made this opening about Asha instead.

    51:51 I don't know why but wow this part of the video about the themes on society's expectations and how it's portrayed in earlier disney movies really spoke to me. It just goes to show that back then Disney did know how to write protagonists who are outcasts and different without actually have to go the "quirky adorkable route", showing their struggles with the stereotypes or social stigma, maybe that's why autistic ppl like us can relate more to the protagonists from the older movies rather than Asha for example lol

    I know the similarities between Welcome To Rosas and The Family Madrigal have been commented on a lot with respect to the music but I'm always struck by the differences in the wishes/gifts revealed in the songs. The gifts developed by the members of the family Madrigal appear to be more-or-less random, maybe vaguely based on the person's personality but definitely not consciously chosen by anyone/anything. Yet they're so much more interesting and dynamic than the wishes in Wish, especially the ones shown in Welcome to Roses, even though you'd think that someone's deliberate choice of what they're wishing for would utilize all the creativity and imagination inherent to the human spirit. And in fact the whole idea that someone's wishes are the bestest, beautifulest, most important part of themselves kind of relies on it. Yet you're telling me some people's "most beautiful part of themselves" is... wanting long hair? Wanting to dance on beat? As compared to, say, a kid who's mentioned once in passing as being "an animal guy" who gets to communicate with & befriend any animal?
    I know there's the setup for a possible explanation for the wishes being so lackluster but the movie doesn't actually provide it. I'm guessing back in the drafts when Magnifico was just straight-up evil he probably purposely only granted wishes that were kind of petty and small in scope, so that he wouldn't inadvertently grant a wish powerful enough to threaten himself. But that needed to change when they made him good and had him grant wishes that were good for Rosas (and just couldn't pose a potential threat)- because how is growing long hair "good" for Rosas? It's apparently not a potential threat as far as Magnifico can see but it's not actually "good" for the kingdom either. The guy's not harvesting his super-growing hair to make wigs for cancer patients and soak up oil spills in the ocean, etc. Maybe they could spin it as Magnifico only granting relatively small wishes to make sure nothing too powerful was granted as a safety measure but Sabo's wish was small potatoes too, so even that doesn't fit. Idk, maybe they had already finished this scene before they switched Magnifico from being evil so it made sense at the time or something. As it stands, it completely undermines the theme and importance of wishes when all the wishes we see are underwhelming af. Maybe that's why all the secrecy- Magnifico doesn't want anyone to know his kingdom is filled with a bunch of basic bitches.

    I originally was just going to write an "omg an hour long video!" comment because I didn't think I had much to say besides agree with everything you were talking about - spot-on analysis as always! - but like you were saying, I am super curious as to how they even started this movie. Because normally, from what I've seen in other Disney movies, it's figure out what you want to make, create concept art, write the first draft, create the music, then start the animation, and after that it's just refining everything down until you have your movie. Like how did they get the steps so backwards??? This was so clearly just an anniversary movie first and a story second, which is the worst way to start a project, and it's so frustrating to see.

    About that last bit: writing and songwriting almost definitely come before any major animation process with a studio as big as disney. songs can be written and scrapped while animation is still in the storyboarding, animatic or even rough animation stage. There's a scrapped song from the emperor's new groove that's like this, where only a couple of storyboards and animation roughs survived, but a full and complete recording of the song was made before it was scrapped due to the whole story being changed around. The final movie isn't even a musical.
    So for wish a lot of the story and songwriting choices came before making any major animation decisions besides a lot of concept art and maybe some animation tests. The storytellers and songwriters often work closely together with concept artists and lead animators and such, so before any major sets were fully 3D modeled much of the story and setting would have already been there. If it sucks, I wouldn't blame it on the animators.

    I actually hate ‘you can turn all your wanting to wishing’ because the whole thing of Rosas is that people give up their one wish! They have no wishes! Something like ‘here we want/wish for nothing’ would make so much more thematic sense imo, sounding like a good thing at first, but actually foreshadowing that people’s wishes are taken away
    I so agree about Rosas being dull and un-magical tho. I think disney may have written themselves into a corner there, because if people WERE getting actually fantastical wishes granted, the whole ‘we don’t need magnifico’s magic, we can grant our own wishes’ thing wouldn’t work anymore, and defeating magnifico would mean making Rosas permanently less magical- pretty hard to sell as a happy ending

    • @CalxiynCaresTooMuch
      @CalxiynCaresTooMuch  Месяц назад +1

      OHhhhh that's a REALLY nice double meaning. I wish I thought of that! Like the "We wish for nothing" seems like they have everything they could ever need but they literally wish for nothing because they don't remember, it's CRAZY.
      Re: Disney writing themselves into a corner, I think the thing is Asha having a magic wand calls that into question anyway. Like, the message they should have been trying to go for is that everyone has a little bit of magic inside of them (That Asha had magic all along vs getting it from Star) and the fairy godmother / the star spirit people help to bring it out. Even in Cinderella, when she has her transformation the fairy godmother said it's because of her heart and her strength of will. If they worked on the Starboy concept a little bit more I think the idea of Starboy could have theoretically fixed it basically, but by getting rid of that concept they hurt themselves when it came to that ending.

    It's still an unfair comparison, the expansive structural kick-flip of, "We told you we couldn't cut Part of Your World AND WE WERE RIGHT" vs "I dunno, she can give a tour because Mirabel did, I guess," but MAN am I not grading it on that curve anymore, and YIKES.

This story is what happens when corporations force art for profit. Every interesting decision was cut because it was probably "too expensive" and took "too long". They have no interest in wasting money on new IPs when they have some of the most famous names in entertainment. Hell they no longer have to put effort into anything anymore, and basically are screwing over everyone who works for them.

    In answer to your question as to how the animation production pipeline works as a soon to be graduating animation major (literally, next month!!!!!!), music and design are supposed to be started back in pre-production. So in pre-production, you start making the music, creating the setting (from the storyline to the backgrounds), designing all the parts (characters, sets, props, etc.), determining the art style, and finally, you begin the storyboarding process. Usually, the music isn't quite done for the storyboards, but by the time the real animation starts, you should be having set in stone concepts for the music. For animation, storyboarding is like blocking in theatre. However, because you're making everything up, you need the storyboard to help determine if your early background designs work for this piece, where and how you're going to animate the character's movement/incorporate the sound design, and all the rest. Additionally, to animate, the preference for it is the final singing track to ensure you get the right lip sync (same with speaking). Not just that but if you're animating little reaction sounds from the track in, then you need to time those to the right frame (which ironically may not be the frame when the sound starts but actually before it starts). So by the time you're at the actual animating stage, a lot of your music and story should ideally be pretty much done or you're working on polishing the last bits. It's why it's so rare to see a nearly completed sequence get cut from animated films. You usually have early storyboards in the "deleted scene" sections of bonus features. Now that said, because we don't necessarily work on the first scene first, you may not have all the music done. You may have some of the tracks completed but not all. But it should be entering the "wrap up" stage at this point to ensure you don't have to rework stuff later. So essentially, if your song mentions soaring on a field of butterflies and that was in the storyboard as a visual piece, you should have made that asset by the time you're animating.

      Thank you so much! With this information in mind I truly wonder where the communication breakdown happened because even though Julia Michael's lyrics aren't great, they could have in theory made some of the stuff she talks about (like the greatest creations all on display) etc. So I guess based on what you said that would have been a storyboarding issue? I feel like there's something fishy about the whole situation, I wonder if people will ever speak out about the production on the movie because it feels like there was some sort of restriction.
      I also heard they didn't have the script done before they asked Julia Michaels to write the songs so that may explain some things as well. I mean ultimately I never blame the individual people working on the movie cause they're just doing their job - it's the higher ups who sign off on stuff, surely it should be the directors job or someone even higher than that to be like "this isn't really conveying things like how I want it to, let's add this" earlier in the process. Maybe the script went through so many rewrites stuff started to get squishy for the 100th anniversary release :/ it honestly makes me sad.

      @@CalxiynCaresTooMuch From what has come out, lots of the issues were partly due to upper management interference. The other thing to remember with most animated films from the Disney Renaissance in particular is that the songwriters were much more heavily involved in every aspect of the pre-production. But with Wish, they did not give her a finished story and they basically went "You get three weeks to write it and then we'll record and we move on." Not to mention how rushed this film was. They began it in 2018. They didn't start even writing the music until 2021. They released it in 2023. Most animated films take YEARS to make. For instance, Tangled was in the works from 2001. They didn't even cast the actors until 2009. Now, to be fair, Tangled had a bit of a rocky start to its production as it went through several different treatments which is why its pre-production was closer to 8 years. Encanto went into production around 2016 and Miranda was working on it from the beginning. I don't have an exact date for when the cast was set, but based off the some of the other dates, likely it was sometime around 2019 or 2020. Even if you go with the earliest date, that's three years of work Miranda had put in. If you go with the latest, that's close to 4 years of pre-production to get the story cohesive and the songwriting planned out. And he didn't dip after the music was done because he was also involved with story. Compared to Wish's... three weeks late in pre-production when they were clearly already struggling to figure out the plot still. For instance, rumor is "At All Costs" was meant to be more of a love ballad. Not to the wishes, but for Asha and possibly Star Boy. Which is why it sounds so weird in the film's actual context. "I'm sorry, sir, are you singing to the wishes or to the 17 year old girl?" "The wishes." I like to listen to Disney soundtracks before the film. Legit, I thought At All Costs was a love song before I saw the film. Also, I thought "I'm a Star" was the closing credit song. My horror when it was mid film had me yelling at the TV. (Yes, I will argue that placing that song at that point was a legitimate plot issue that kills the momentum the film had going because its tone is all wrong and gear the audience to feel like the film is over, not just reaching the end of its first act.)
      So in short: Wish didn't get the amount of pre-production time it needed. That's why everything doesn't work. Based off the script and the meddling, honestly, I think Wish realistically should have had a timeline like Tangled of close to a decade worth of pre-production. Instead, they got a couple years in which they shortchanged everyone's timelines. Sadly, like most films that struggle like this and are rushed out despite that, you can tell. Everything feels like a first draft even though realistically, we're probably looking at something several iterations down. I don't think it's the workers' fault. I think this comes down to corporate wanted this for the anniversary, meddled in the production, and ignored all the red flags that this needed more time to come together because anniversary deadline. Like, they originally wanted it to be 2D and started production in 2018. For 2D, that is a steep timeline. Not impossible. But definitely pushing it. It could have probably been a good film if the upper management had just acknowledged that the issues, stopped interfering, and even delayed the film. Come up with a new strategy. Maybe release a short film only as a tribute to Disney's earliest works. But instead, they kept going. I've had to learn in my own schooling that sometimes, you just gotta acknowledge that you bit off too much for a project. The way to fix it isn't to just keep going. It's to stop for reassessing.

    What Disney musical/movie do you think was the best on a technical level? I want a good example to look at that’s not a Barbie movie bc I never watched those as a kid

      As an "easy to understand why it's the best on a technical level" I'd pick Beauty and the Beast or Hunchback of Notre Dame for sure. I think both movies are masterpieces but I also think they are very accessible in terms of figuring out why they are successful at executing their objectives. I want to make individual song analysis' for all the songs in those movies so stay tuned for things that are not Barbie haha XD

    The tiki room has singing flowers and birds! Why couldn’t wish have that? Wish couldve had José join in for a couple lyrics and meet the other tiki room birds in the background, that would be a fun easter egg
