Mia Morris / music vlog ep. #35 “GRLwood”

  • I like a lot about the music that the band, GRLwood has put out so far but ultimately, the thing I find absolutely fascinating is how GRLwood, and bands like them fit into the, “music business”. Growing up and playing music in Nashville has taught me a ton about how the traditional music machine currently works. I understand the symbiotic relationship between the publishing companies, labels, digital marketing and PR firms, distributors, streaming services, radio and satellite, award shows, charts and press, live gigs & touring and somewhere at the end of all of those efforts, the actual real-life fans.
If you’ve followed me for any length of time on here or other social apps, you know many of my thoughts on those subjects. If you don’t, the quick summary is that most of what you see and hear in music is entirely the result of paid promotion. It is manufactured and mostly fake. It’s an equation that is repeated over and over again where companies spend money promoting music in the hopes that enough people eventually decide that they like the music and then give money back to the companies. Two lesser know facts are, that the companies fail almost all of the time and on the rare occasions that it does works, the companies keep most of the money to continue the cycle.
The reason GRLwood is so fascinating to me is that they have come up mostly outside of that standard music business machine. The song lyrics and subject matter of the music alone pretty much eliminates the use of many of the tools the music biz utilizes and the style of music, puts it outside of the mainstream. That leaves GRLwood with fewer and simpler metrics to measure success. What has happened is that the music has been discovered by fans that love the songs. There are a lot of people that choose to stream their music from all across the world and a loyal following that comes out to shows and sing along to the songs. That makes for pretty cool experience as a musician on stage and this vlog is a look at one of those nights.
I’m 17 years old and I’m a professional musician. I try to play lots of instruments but the ones that I feel most at home on are drums, cajon and bass. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend a lot of my time writing and recording. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 6 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing music, keep loving it and keep getting better.

A big thankyou to all who contributed and helped make this vlog possible.
How can anyone not be impressed!! If you don't like this music, go stream Mia's other origial music on Spotify. Where ever this all leads for Mia, you got to know, and appreciate the autnenticity, hundreads of hours of hard work, the genunis love and understanding of music, and the barriers Mia continues to break, regardless of who stands behind her, or not.
Mia, you never fail to impress, And despite some fans only being interested is a small part of your music capabilites, keep going. My oppnins counts for nada other than hopefully knwoing there are people out there who genuintly revil over seeing you contiue to develop and expand your already massivly huge passion, understanding and capatilites of music and the many faces of the music world. I must repeat myself in saing I have yet to hear any of your music I do not like, and as a musicn on stage, (based soley on publically share video footage) I have never seen you happier than I have playing with GrlWood. Getting out there with Calista Clark on stage was pretty great too. Now those differences in music styles sutie me just fine, along with any other genre to be true. Much of my respect for you Mia comes from your honesty, depths of knowledge, and genunie passion for music, along with the huge amounds of hard work, wisdom, determination and hunger for music.
As a fan of several years I try to be as supportive as I can with my limited knowledge, resourses and tools. I wonder how I can do that better for you, as you sure earned your loyal fans, and I want the world to see in you what I, and many others see in you.
You are not a music God. You are a genuine human being who works your butt off to make great music, and works so well beside others to help make their musicial journys shine too.
I say this more for anyone reading this far, more than for yourself. I don't worship you, though I have heard others suggest some kind of religion. I just apprecaite what we get to know and learn from you and get to enjoy the music you make and contribule to in all its verious forms. As I said at the start of this novel, Mia, you never fail to impress.
Thank you Mia! Kept having fun doing this, as you see fit, and be in that minority that make a great living from what ever you do with music. I will do my part in that, best I can as a loyal fan.
And yes, GrlWood sounds great!! Stocked to see this vlog!!!
    You smashed it on drums!!
Keep smashing it, doing what you do best, being you!
    Have a great weekend Mia.

there is so much i appreciate about this comment but one thing very near the top is the fact that you seem to share my appreciation for music in the broadest sense. everyone has their favorites but for me, there is SOOOO much to enjoy about making music of any kind that i can't see missing out on anything based on genre. i find musical/artistic inspiration in places i would have never predicted and my moods and tastes get more interesting the less i try to guess where i should look.

@@miamorrismusic Thank you Mia. I really do appreciate a far more diverse rang of music than anyone would ever expect. Some of the most brillent will never be found in main stream music. So many people are missing out so much. Where ever you find inspriration, run with it as you see fit, in any way you choose. I can only but hope to catch a glimpe of some of that through what you choose to share with the world. As appropate, I will always back you whatever you do with music, for music, and in music. So stocked your next is about to drop!!

Have to say Mia. After watching this Vlog, I actually really started liking it!. The reason people are shocked by your age is....Your skills, singing, drumming, song writing all you do exceeds your age. I'm sure you remember a couple of years ago when I said you have the mind, etc, etc of a 35 yr old.
Your going to bring MUSIC into a new Dimension that nobody has seen before!
I kid you not. You will understand more and more as time goes by. Hope you had a blast in Columbia. Hugs your way. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ R.G.

Mia. I read all your narrative here and you always seem to be to quite astute in your observations, realities about the "music business." And it pleases me that you are. Lots of musicians have had to learn what you already know but in a much longer time frame. To put it more succintly, 'you aint gonna get punked,' as long as you can prevent it. Having said that, I think your attitude as an artist is just kept more real, authentic. You're in it for the right reasons, for the magic you create for yourself and for the audience it serves. It's no coincidence the kind of following you have already and always growing. I'm there with everyone else. It's good to see you stretch your wings to do stuff like GRLwood. Y'all sound great and its just the 2 of you. The energy is evident. Long way around it , thumbs up M&M , and,.... 'Mia's got blisters on her fingers !!." : )

:) i actually just saw paul talking about when ringo said that in the studio- very cool. thank you and thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts on the biz. it's such a tiny percentage of musicians that have any long-term success, especially if your measuring stick is income but strangely, that hasn't made me any less inspired to find a way to make a career of it. i like knowing and understanding all of that even when i don't like the implications and for me, it has almost nothing to do with what i love about music. i sat and wrote music today that may not ever turn into a song and if it does, very few people may ever here it. i also really enjoyed it and i feel like i'm getting better at it. that's enough success for me today and as long as it stays that way, i'm not in a hurry to change much.

Hi Mia, I used to think you were so much older too, like in your mid-twenties at the time you covered drums on "Ballroom Blitz". My daughter listens to that style of music. Back in the day I would tell her those musicians have "issues". We would laugh about it. She still enjoys that genre, but not as much these days. Well done. I always enjoy when you include more music in your vlogs . I like the new hair. Take care. :-) BTW I could sponsor your Band-Aids if you had a patreon account. 🤭 (and it's no wonder musicians prefer the Band-Aid brand... 🤪 )

BUT, you still got to rage at The End club, and that was really Dope, and Lit, and 🔥, and all the things!!! I loved that so much! And there's another fun fact about the music biz. I bet all their metrics and algorithms don't include an old fart like me getting into GRLwood music! 😂 I'm playing that CD all the time in my car, and "I hate my mom" is the most tenacious ear worm I've ever had. It was also really satisfying to see you having so much fun blazing away on your drums and even getting on my side of the stage for a change and dance around in the pit for Peachy. Anyway it was a totally awesome experience including the impromptu hydration. 💦😂 I'm hoping y'all get to do it again, and I'll try to be there for round #2. Have a wonderful weekend Neighbor! 😁🤘💕😎

Mia is clever in just jumping head first into the music vortex. She will learn a freight train load and then some. If a person has not found any specific formula to launch their own music, then this is the way to do it. If you want to hit "star" status, then you'll need to eventually find something and more or less stick to it to build a dedicated fan base. Mia, you rock [and GRLwood you scream -lol].

I find this GRLwood sound to be more of a beat poetry than music, something I learned to like a million years ago in my hippie youth. Didn't expect to enjoy this style of music but really enjoyed this snippet. There's no way this came through "the man" and sure enough, I read the description to find this ain't polished in some accepted formula machine. I'm sure "Hank never done it this way". Mia, I think you've embraced the outlaw movement. Kudos

Too bad about Bonnaroo. Other opportunities will come your way in time. The GRLwood experience was unlike anything that I've seen in your other videos. I know it was a blast for you.
Your comments were really well written. More professional. You say that you're a "professional" musician. That word has other meanings, besides employment. And I agree, you ARE a professional musician.
Band Aid Skin Flex is my favorite. It sticks to skin really well, but you need to remove any part that sticks to itself, or it will peel off. And the elastic doesn't break down.

ha! well, i'm looking at the Band Aid Skin Flex on another tab right now. thank you for the suggestion. i appreciate your thoughts on the description and understand completely what your saying about the subtleties about using the P word. I feel more comfortable using that word recently and i was certainly paid to play a long time before i felt like a professional so - thank you :)

Mia, you might be surprised at the number of artists who have seen what Pink Floyd famously described as "The Machine" for what it is, and are eschewing the so-called music companies and their traditional model of ripping off artists and allowing just enough to get very wealthy to entice more hopeful (and occasionally even moderately talented) people into their clutches. Too many do still fall into those clutches though and mistake a signing deal as their first big payday, when it is, of course, a loan from a very nasty shark that will crush you into their corporate standards and insist on controlling every aspect of your life. Take good notes from the independents. And from those who wish they still were (and even a few who have even walked on contracts to go independent). Two things actually matter - the artists and the fans. The rest is parasitic more than symbiotic. It is an overhead, which has grown too big for its boots and needs to be taken down a notch or hundred.
These days, with the Internet able to provide as much promotion as you can feed it with, and disseminate it with FAR lower overheads or deductions from what artists receive, the traditional model is facing real competition. I imagine you have come across Nita Strauss? She is unsigned. Kickstarter, Patreon, Paypal, RUclips, Instagram, Twitter etc. are the replacement for promoters and labels. Direct to the fans, who are learning that this is how to find new artists playing what they want to hear, and support them to the extent of funding even tours and new studios, not just albums, and find out their playing schedules so they can get to go see them live. Use the artists' own webstores for merch (and I'm sure you can set something like that up fairly easily, or know someone who can help you with it). Some artists play as independents with established bands (like Nita) as well as produce their own material, others stay entirely out of the mainstream. Running a (usually, but not always family) small team to deal with social media, merch, bookings, etc. completely independently of the labels, or even forming a label themselves.
Your wide-ranging talent and hard work ethic mean that if anyone can make it this way, you can.
That gig looked like a blast - one day, I hope to see you this side of the pond.
BTW I've marshalled a music festival here in the UK that got hit with the final lashes of a hurricane after it came across (Charlie, 1986), and it was a total disaster area, with village and church halls requisitioned as emergency shelters and a massive job to organise search parties, rescue teams and areas, reunite families and friends first with each other, then with the vehicles which had to be extracted and in many cases repaired. We really are not used to extreme weather here (although we are getting more of it these days, so have some tough lessons ahead). I'd been a shift lead and worked non-stop for three days and both nights between them trying to find and account for everyone (thankfully, nobody lost longer than 24 hours), then salvage as much for the festival itself and all the attendees who were swamped. I have no doubt that cancelling was the only safe option, even if it does suck. I also particularly remember it because I met my wife there, 35 years ago. Two weeks later we were engaged and six months later married. Three of our children are older than you. Of course, most of our friends said it would never last. Early days yet, but it seems to be going ok so far 😁.

i've messed with gloves a little but really miss the contact & feeling. my hands will be fine. i'm just a little more cautious with them now that people hire me to hit them :) as far as added musicians, i've thought about that as well and it might be cool in some cases with recordings but there is also something especially satisfying about the space that a two-piece gives to the music and dynamics. i totally get why, white stripes, black keys and countless others keep some shows this way.

It's funny, a couple of weeks ago Brooke C did a cover of Mars simula by chevelle and I was singing that song in my head all day. So I was pleasantly surprised to find it when I got home. Lol so this week its synchronicity with you. Plus I don't really think you hate your mom. Lol. And thanks to the Ramones for the idea of the twist on the lyrics of their song punk rocker.

I get I'm in the minority here. And I understand yours and other commenter's point of views regarding how playing with multiple artists now gains you exposure. I respectfully disagree is all. Nearly every great artist before now waited until they were established with their own band or brand before doing side projects. Not the other way around. I believe you experience this current hectic schedule, one which could force you to miss a windfall opportunity simply by accepting a different gig due to scheduling, as a result. I guess I'm for picking a lane, perfecting it as best you possibly can, then expanding once the lane becomes an accepted, cherished route. As always, though, keep killing it and enjoying life!

    • @miamorrismusic
      @miamorrismusic  2 года назад +1

hey Paul - i totally get that am i'm not even a tiny bit offended by you saying so. 3 years ago i was a cover musician and youtuber. now i'm a professional musician working on trying to make a career within the music business. those may sound like similar pursuits but the two things have almost nothing to do with each other. unfortunately, some musicians don't figure that out for a very long time. anyone that has achieved some competence on an instrument can figure out how to play some classic tune that they love. the millions of other people that love that same song will find some pleasure in hearing that song for the thousandth time and may enjoy the added bonus of seeing how it might be played on an instrument. there is zero wrong with anyone who participates in that and we all know dozens or even hundreds of youtubers that do that masterfully.
playing covers was fun for me and helpful when i was 12 and if it's fun for someone else when they are 72, then that is a perfect reason to do it. what is currently fun for me is working in, and working on new, original music that I and other artists and writers create. I hope to be a part of the body of music that is put out into the world in the future and I completely understand that isn't as familiar as hearing a classic rock song that takes you back. I love that music has the power to do that but I love it so much, that I want to create music that someday turns into one of those songs for someone else. Posting cover videos won't teach me or anyone else, how to do that.
i've learned an enormous amount about the music business and the creative process in the last couple of years and i believe i'm doing exactly the sorts of things i should to give myself the best chance to have a career in music. i'm also thoroughly enjoying how i get to spend my time. i recognize your name, realize you've been following me for a long time and i appreciate the support you've undoubtedly given me but if you've been paying much attention, none of this can be new information. i've never had a patreon account and i don't base my content on what would get the most views. i make videos that help me get better at things that interest and inspire me and that promote the things i'm passionate about. the people that like what i post are most likely the fans that could have an impact on my future career. the people that don't, probably aren't the sort of music fan that might be inclined to listen to new music, buy a new band's merchandise or go to a new band's shows. there's nothing wrong with either group of people but they certainly have different implications for my goals.
it's a benefit for everyone to figure out how to get what they are striving for. if i was getting paid for requests on a patreon account or selling views and sponsorships for a living, my focus might look a lot like some very familiar names here on YT. i can promise you, my love and appreciation for music and my career will never be reduced to that :)
