It's part of the game for better or worse. Football is a rough sport that relies on peak athleticism. As guys age they lose the quick explosive movement that is needed to accel in the NFL. Even more than that is the prevalence of nagging injuries that take their toll on players' bodies reducing speed and agility. It's more rare for skill position players to have long successful careers than it is for them to flame out quickly. It's a stupid cliche, but the N.F.L. also stands for "Not For Long" because that's what players should be prepared for their pro-football careers.
I just checked his stats, I didn't realize how well he did for WR2 or even WR3 while playing w/ Hopkins & Kirk. Not sure too many touchdowns considering the team only featured 27 total passing touchdowns but yardage-wise, he did okay!

Wes Welker deserves a mention. After a few solid years in New England and Denver and being the star of some hilarious Old Spice ads, the combination of age and being busted for molly led to a fast decline and by the end, being nothing more than a forgettable backup on a forgettable Rams team.
