    Finally getting to watch someone who has talent and pride in their drywall work! My daughter and I specialized in drywall repairs for years. Basically we were painters and just got into the wall repair by accident. We always aimed for perfection. Matching many older texture styles was always so fun. Our aim was to make cracks and dents completely disappear. I have never done the backing board thing, but have imagined this very technique in my mind....this video was amazing! Thank you!

    Have an eight foot crack in livingroom ceiling spanning the old 2X4 trusses. I have been up in that area doing electrical and venting over the years and my weight probably flexed the trusses. Really like that furring strip repair example in your video. Thanks. I'm doing one on the Master Bedroom electrical outlet cutout, where I am installing a much larger outlet box to ensure enough air space for cooling of the 21 electrical connections in there. Nice video, now I know how to fix this ceiling crack professionally. I worked in the 1970's for a short period as a drywall grunt for a journeyman and we would sheetrock a 3 br/2 ba split level in around 8 or so hours. That is when I learned to hammer from any angle thousands of times a day.....back then we used nails.

    You did a good job. I would of added one thing. Before mesh, V out the flat seam out a smig... then add liquid nail... putting enough pressure to have it squeeze all the way thru to the opposite side of the drywall, and fill the V... then mesh away. No hump, no issues with mud dry or flashing. But it’s a forever fix.

    10/10 - This isn't just a cover the crack quick fix. You're getting to the root of the crack and fixing that. Great video. That and your texturing techniques. I've been doing home drywalls repairs for 3 years(as an amateur home owner). I think I'm pretty decent for an amateur, and I'm constantly criticizing my work every time I walk by it. I learn something new with each of your videos. I may punch a hole in one of my walls just so I can fix it. That's actually not necessary since I have several ceiling cracks and some wall work to do in my spare time. Keep up the good videos

  • @KurtfromLaQuinta
    @KurtfromLaQuinta 3 года назад +2

    I've been a drywall "taper" for almost 48 years now. For the first 39 years all I did was a lot of production piece work using taping tools exclusively. Where not only did you have to be fast, but you must turn out quality work to make the money. Yep... I'm that old and still doing it and have pretty much seen it all. I've gotten into more remodel jobs these last almost 10 years now because that's where the money is now.
    I despise cracks in the ceiling. One reason why is trying to match textures. I try really hard to do them where they disappear. And I'm pretty good at it. But... it's a patch. Your dealing with mils (many coats) of paint, light going across the surface and picky homeowners. I always tell them "It's a patch". And I do the best I can with all the experience I have to make it right. Then give them an option of fixing the patch... which "should" come out right.. for $XX.00. Or... I can do the whole ceiling for $XXX.00. They almost always go for the $XX.00.
    One of the biggest reasons cracks appear in the first place... 2' centers on the trusses/ joist and 1/2" drywall. I've seen this done on custom homes and track houses.
    It's sound structurally, but it moves way to much. If home builders pull that stunt... they need to use 5/8" rock.
    In my experience about mesh tape. See all those holes in it? I've seen numerous patches, and sometimes whole houses taped with that stuff. "Hot Mud" or regular... it "can" crack straight down the joint line. It's a risk I'm not taking. It's a "do it yourselfer" product because you don't have the blister issue of not getting the proper amount of joint compound under the paper tape.
    I use a lot of 5 minute "Hot Mud" because it just works faster when doing those small area patches. Not recommend if you move like molasses LoL!. Many times I've mixed up a sack and a half of 20 minute in a bucket and use it up before it goes off.
    I haven't had time to look at your other patching videos. So I'll just say this now... rub the edges of the patches with a wet sponge to blend into the old texture when your ready to texture the patch. It will kill the edge and make a better blend. And if that's what you recommend... good for you.

      So do you strictly use paper tape for everything? What about fibafuse?

    • @KurtfromLaQuinta
      @KurtfromLaQuinta 2 года назад

      @@classiccountryrevival8563 I've never used that stuff before. I know drywall tape. And I still push a bazooka around on bigger jobs. That fiber type tape will not work in a bazooka. One 250' roll of it is almost over 4 times the cost of one 500' roll of the paper tape. It looks like you have to carry a razor knife to cut it too. It doesn't makes sense to me because the regular tape works fine.

    DYI here, enjoying the videos, I’m researching. I’ve got a big mess, plaster walls and most of the ceiling appears to be plastered. They had covered both with paneling, which I removed. Water damage, roof repaired, sistered some beams, removed the nail glue but lots of holes left to patch, cracks to fix. I’m thinking after those are repaired skimming and knock down are going to be the best approach. Thanks for the videos.

    One of your better how to videos. Ceiling cracks stink for sure. One of my rental properties years ago, a potential tenant saw a crack like the one you fixed and bailed on renting from us, saying it was a deal breaker. She was paranoid and thought the place would fall apart. It was Only cosmetic! Paul have you heard of those screw setter bits Dewalt makes that allows you to instantly sink a screw into drywall perfectly every time in one motion? You don't have to slow the drill down at the end because the guard on the bit stops it perfectly.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  5 лет назад

      I appreciate that Jeff.🔥 Haha... Yeah some people get freaked out if they see a crack in their ceiling. Are you talking about a dimpler bit for a drill? Yes, use them all the time on new drywall.👍🏻 I don’t really use them on repairs though. Because it’s not usually a flat surface that I’m trying to screw into. Thanks so much for watching and commenting man! -Paul

    If you have problems getting block of wood into hole with drywall screw in it, Try placing a center mark on wood and push wood in hole without screw, then work a string, cord, or wire around wood, move wood in place using center mark for reference, and pull down on string, cord or wire while driving in screws then remove string, you can do same on walls but need to tape string on back of wood so not to drop wood down inside wall. Might need a glove on while pulling down on string. This works well in tight spaces like in ceilings where roof angle is close or wall which has an outlet box or framing in wall in opposite room restricting your hole access.

    after you put the firring strip through the hole turn it 90 degrees so it will span more of the joint. Ceiling trusses are typically 24 inches o.c. which leaves roughly 21 inches between trusses. If your fir strip is 12 inches long and more or less centered between trusses that leaves only about 4-5 inches of unsupported joint.

    When you mix up easy sand whether it’s 20 , 45 or 90 , always clean your bucket or pan well and use cold water . Quick mud is hot mud . It gets hot . So the colder the water the longer the compound will stay usable .
    20 should actually last about 30 minutes . Etc

      If it is 100 yrs old and has never been remodeled, it is most likely plaster lath, thin wooden strips, with a 3/8" gap between them, covered with plaster which has horse hair mixed into it. The horse hair helped act like mini rebars to give the plaster strength. After plaster lath, came Rocklath [roughly 18" x 4'] , then came drywall.

    The drywall repair was done right except i use paper tape it never failed me.
    If you are using mesh tape you have to use a different gage a lot thicker and stronger it’s used in the plaster trade sometimes.

    Thanks for the video. This will help me repair a drywall ceiling crack from accidently stepping between the joists in the attic. I've watched twice, but have yet to see what you refer to as "guards"; what are they, where are they and how do you do them? Thanx.

    Paul, good method with the extra blocking, but in 30 yrs of drywall I have found that you need the continuous membrane of paper tape, using fiberglass tape the cracks will just reflect through the mesh and you will have cracks again. We stopped using mesh back in the 80's.

    I did this about two years ago but did not have any flex in the drywall. Have you every used Saint-Gobain's ? Lowes carries it and I switched to it from FibaTape and still use 20 min mud, works every so good. Thanks from the Palm Beaches for giving your knowledge on this part of home repair. Much appreciated.

    Have a cieling crack that appeared following a roofing job. Ceiling is drywall. Crack is pretty long, starts at a corner, goes about 20 feet. Notice that there is movement in drywall. So This furring strip technique is reccomended for a job like this? Considering the length of the crack you reccomend multiple strips? Or only where the drywall has give? Had foundation people in to make sure it isn't foundation. The crack is not scraight straight, kind of has multiple start stops but all in line.

    I just have to get a tall enough ladder for the vaulted ceiling now. Those blocks were a thing of beauty. The only question I have is what consistency should the 20 minutes drywall mud be for the 3 coats? I have painted popcorn and just watched your video on that, which blew me away also. It's like when you watch plasterers very cool.

    I have cracks form across the center of mobile homes. I scrape the old texture away and patch it perfectly but when it comes time to match the knock down. Its hard to hide the 12 ft or so strip i scraped out of the ceiling to reveal the crack. ...otherwords its hard to match it to both sides of the patch that i didnt scrape.

    As a DIY guy I've done a lot of drywall repairs. I appreciate all you video's they help often. I just bought a retirement home for ourselves. The ceilings are in fair shape, there are a few joints that separated and have no problem doing them. However, the ceiling was finished using a spraying application and they mixed mica in with the paint (stuff the use to do back in the 60,s thru the 80's.) I won't be spraying the finish, most likely using a roller. I can't find mica anywhere in my area or online. Any ideas on where to purchase? I like the look of the reflection, especially with the fireplace blazing. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

    New DIY viewer here. Enjoyed your video. Concise and informative. I'm Looking for information on repairing a kitchen ceiling crack. The small crack recently expanded, after a floor joist repair. It is about 8 inches out from the wall, and is between 2 trusses. How do I attach the 2 drywall sections to each other, when there is nothing above to screw them to? Do you have a specific video that addresses this? Thank you.

    Great tip Paul. I have a question, I just started 3 years ago and I'm been having some doubts about old apartments ( I live and work in Montreal, CA), the old ceilings in the bathrooms I've realized that they have some kind of metallic mesh then the sheetrock, after a leaking damage on these kind of ceilings, if I would want to do a patch can I just use the water resistant drywall or I would have to apply this same metallic mesh onto the patch.... I hope you know what I'm talking about. Gettings and good videos

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  5 лет назад +2

      Hey there Ricardo, you can just use the moisture resistant drywall.👍🏻 You might need to shim the framing to get the drywall to sit flush with the existing ceiling. Because plaster is usually thicker than drywall. I hope this makes sense? Thanks so much for watching and subscribing man!😎 -Paul
