  • Today I'm talking all things numbers in terms of our backyard flower farming business. I'm chatting about how much money we made flower farming in 2023 and also include how much RUclips paid me last year as it is technically income from the business. Flower farming as a side hustle can be as expensive as you want to make it.... I chat through all of our expenses from the year and although, overall our profit wasn't that high, I'm glad we didn't lose money and I can slow start to grow this business. I hope you find this video interesting! This video is not intended to be financial advise in any way, but just me sharing our income report from last year.
    Here's some fantastic RUclipsrs who have discussed information regarding finances and flower farming that I would highly recommend if you're interested in knowing more:

    Hey there!
    Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking, environmental science and flower farming in my Australian bushland backyard in south coast NSW.
    My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist, and flower farmer. I have recently completed my PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change but now I'm taking a break from research to pursue a dream of owning a flower farm. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
    On this channel you'll find videos relating to garden tours, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health and how to start a flower farm.
    I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!
    🤎 Filmed and edited on Yuin country. I acknowledge and pay respects to Traditional Owners of the land past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

    Great information. Thinking of this as a side hustle since I grow many flowers already for personal enjoyment. Love the organic focus as well. Thank you for the realistic presentation and stats.

    Great video with helpful content and real numbers. I'm a life-long garden enthusiast and just started toying with the idea of selling dahlia tubers next year, likely on a smaller scale initially. I'm just starting to look into the initial steps: do I need to form a business to do a few thousand dollars of sales, do I need a plant health certificate, do I need a website, what else would I need in that initial first year. There is a lot to think about and keep track of!

    Hi Robin, great video, loved how you showed and analysed the experiences and earning. How ever you didn't talk about labour? Thanks for sharing and happy growing 😊

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Absolutely, labour is a massive expense for most businesses, and in future is something I will be adding in as an expense. However, during my first year for the majority of the year I didn't take money out of the business for myself for labour as I had other income. Due to the structure of the business, I wasn't paying myself for labour as I'm a sole trader and the income was reinvested. Really good point and something that I missed in this video so thanks for bringing it up :)

    Hi Robyn, this video was really interesting. Thanks for showing this type of info. It's so hard to understand how much work does into just being a1st year flower farmer.
    I hope your health continues to improve.

    Great video. I appreciate you not romanticising flower farming. My husband keeps asking me if I’m happy doing this for free. 😂. - I’m in my second year and haven’t made a profit, although I have had to essentially start again with moving to a new farm in spring/Summer. It can be a lot of hard work and initial set up costs are high, so i think it’s worth having a different primary income. We have a dairy farm so flower farm hasn’t been my primary income. It would take years I think for that to happen. It’s fun to grow things though, I love it.

    Do you think that having the veggies at the market attracts more flower customers?

    • @thenaturepatch
      @thenaturepatch  15 дней назад

      Honestly, I don't think it did... Usually people were either buying food or flowers, rarely did they buy both at the same time :) But it did help to bulk up our stall when we were low on flowers.
