Bro you guys have build this thing basically from scratch, don’t be so sad about things not working straight away, give yourselves some major props! Absolute gangstas
Crank case breather!!!! Pressure builds, high rpm causes enough pressure to suck it back through the valve seals.
100% agree defo
would explain the initial valve cover leaking issue too
It’s definitely got a breather/breathing issue as soon as I saw the rocker cover pressure. It’s either breathing due to a knackered engine (damaged bores and/or rings) or a blocked breather. Did these have nikasil liner issues by any chance?
Potentially the oil is overfilled too, as we don’t know if the dipstick will correlate to the new/custom sump. The crank dragging through the oil isn’t going to help performance and air rate the oil
That was the issue with mine!
That oil was like glitter. A magnet will only attract ferrous metals and the m60 is predominantly aluminium. Rod bearings are also usually non ferrous metals.
That's what I thought. Something is definitely unhappy in the bottom end and I'm pretty sure it's knocking at 4:09. Maybe an exhaust leak?
@@sampuhhupmas5666 (just gearbox chatter from a light flywheel at idle not knocking) but after they swapped the ecu because its burning oil im not too confident in their ability anymore
@@mrturtle3531 the knocking is flywheel chatter from the gearbox (we addressed it last video), and we swapped ECU to see if it helped the limp mode not the exhaust smoke ya donut hahah
@@boqer123 which is still dumb tf. Your oil was clearly metallic and non ferrous, its not in limp mode its just something wrong with the engine hence why there is no power, you are burning oil and are trying to fix a limp mode? how often does an ecu fix clouds of blue smoke? Idk man my first insticnt would be a compression test to see if all my piston rings were still good. swapping the ecu is no gonna do anything. you never even looked if the engine threw codes but no lights were on so idk why youd think it was in limp mode. And even if it was in limp mode, if my engine produces clouds of blue smoke, fixing the limp mode would be the least of my concern especially since the smoke came from the exhausts, ya donuts. Wraps looked delicous tho
@@boqer123 btw i just watched the previous video, you were already burning a bit of oil back then when you took it around the block. could be water but it looks blue on video. engine was also definately hot you can hear it ticking from the heat
That smoke is blue so definitely burning oil on load, could be bad valve stem seals. Not sure if you did a compression test but that's where I'd start. Could also be bad piston rings. Both of these would cause low power and high levels of smoke. Valve stem seals usually cause loads of smoke on start up after the cars been sat for a while, so if it's relatively smoke free in the morning after a few days rest it might not be that. The age of the engine, the valve stem seals are a rubber part so hence to deteriorating even on low mileage engines. If it is piston rings, time for a built engine and then turbo it ;)
There was metal on the oil. I think its for sure bottom end related
That oil was full of metal 🫣
I saw that. Looks bad
Literally what i was thinking, huge sheen to it
Yeah 100%
completely agree. can see the swarf changing the colour of the oil. almost like paint there was so much in there🤣
Yeah second that it was glittery as owt
So it smokes the worst when you come off load. Which means something is getting pressurised and then getting into the cylinder or the exhaust when you come off throttle. So its either the crankcase is getting pressurised because the breather is broken and its forcing oil down the valve stems orr its the head gasket and it pressurises the coolant system under high load and eats coolant as you come off. Depends what it smells like and looks like. I couldnt tell from the video... good luck lads
Invested in this. Got to sort this before starting anything else. Taken all this time to get it together. See it through come too far man 😂👍🏼
I’ve literally JUST finished building an e36 m62b44 adamat kit etc. we had to block the pipe under the inlet to stop the smoking. It’s the small breather in the sump that picks up oil. Car has run mint ever since 👍🏻
You just blocked it?? We were gunna try run it to atmosphere and see if it stopped haha. If blocking it worked we might try that. That one that’s connected to the OSV yeah?
Really sounds like its running on 7 cylinders. m60s are quite a smooth sounding refined v8. This sounds a bit lumpy, and definitely has some kind of crank case breather issue.
100% defender series for the summer. Trips with the boys are the best memories
Boq's black nail is going to have grown out before this gets to 50mph 🙃🤣
😂😂😂
you win hahaha - email us (support@boqer123.com) and we'll get your address to send the hat and air freshener to!
Work on the defender, love the off-road / adventure build
Damaged bore, blown rings or blocked breather. Definitely start with compression test and cross your fingers😂 Sick to finally see it on the road though!
Wish you guys uploaded more regularly. You and Andy have great chemistry on camera, and it makes for very entertaining watching. Please do more regular videos, the car stuff is fantastic.
dudes i"m a petrol head from the uk,been waiting for a hip replacement for 2 yrs so not been out much, lovin the vids guys and the great nosh too, hopefully when i get better i will buy a car again,i had an is200 from 2001 manuel with low miles, sadly i had to sell it due to not working and bills etc,i have never been the same, cars mean so much and after watching this i feel for you fella,
Just for the future: Blue smoke = oil burning. White smoke = water. Black Smoke = air to fuel ratio too rich.
And as others have said, oil was full of aluminum.
White smoke on a diesel can also be fuel, usually Injected at the exhaust phase. Either a flame map or a bad injector
Currently undergoing an issue with my starlet that I can't seem to get to the bottom of so I know how you feel. I absolutely love the fact you're documenting the low points of project cars which a lot of channels seem to gloss over. I hope you get this sorted mate
Same here man!! Always chasing problems myself aswell, it’s relatable content 💪👌🏼
Shame about the smoke issue but still a quality video nonetheless. Loving the cooking recommendations too
i really enjoy the cooking sections so please never lose them
Also boq it could be the crankcase breather. VW’s can suffer from it quite bad too when they’re hot under decel. They get real hot and then the pressure goes up to the point that eventually there’s enough to pull a bit of oil back through the valves. Worth checking that.
The oil was like mr sparkle though so definitely some further investigation required.
Awesome series though. Loving watching it.
With the V8 conversion kits you have to modify the oil pump, some times this means trimming down the oil pressure spring. Get an oil pressure gauge and check the pressure at idle, cold oil.. and hot WOT.. As for the lack of power, you probably have some sensors in the wrong place. a couple of the connectors are the same from memory.. you might have accidently mixed them up.. it would also be a good idea to get the injectors tested / cleaned .. if you have some sticking it will wash the bore and allow oil past and also run like dog shit.. it sounded like it was missing / loading up under throttle.. Check TPS wiring too.. I Forget it you fitted new cam or crank sensors, its been so long in the making haha.. If you did... test them, old bmws hate the Euro car parts cheapies.. im sure its nothing crazy... Also check the PCV system because if its only after high rpm you're pushing oil in through the breather. Good luck, don't be disheartened you've come this far boys :) if iit was catastrophic engine failure it would be smoking all the time, regardless of rpm or load.. and its not doing that!
That smoke looked blue, I wanna guess oil, normally when it’s a head gasket it’s a constant stream, I’d wanna say piston rings may be a mouldy shegged
100% burning oil
100% Piston rings😢
Next vid - Defender for sure. Also, definitely need a BQR hotdog dad hat - I got excited about buying a bike rack yesterday 😅
More cupra R videos, just bought my first one after watching Colin for years ❤️
First BQR vid I've watched in years (I've been following since the old BMX days, pre cupra, first house etc) and maybe its because I'm about to hit 30 but I lowkey appreciated the cooking segment 😂
Since other comments determined thats burning oil type smoke not burning water smoke and its only comming after redlining it i would assume its something with oil pressure. Maybe someone was playing with overdriving oil pump and now it has too much pressure causing leakage into cilinders and thats why it clears after a second? If you have already backup engine i would swap these rather than waste time tinkering with current one.
I feel deverstaed for you! So annoying to put that work in and not get what you want or even know what the fix is!
Love the content boys. Wish u posted more often. Understand these things rnt easy to produce. Take it steady lads x
He's been posting weekly dude 😅
@@jacobashley9220 weekly is not enough broski 😂
Something sounds like its knocking plus the oil definitely had metal in it, pull the sump off and check the bearings
Mate that oil was like silver paint! There’s 100% a mechanical failure in your engine. Could be worn piston rings or something to cause poor starting, heavy smoke at high rpm on decel due to the back pressure in the crankcase sucking up the oil into the chamber and would also explain your unusually pressurised rocker cover oil leak
yup you're right on all the above. New engine time I think
@@boqer123heartbreaking lad
I have an m62 they have an oil separator inside the timing cover where the timing chain is. That can also fail. Other than diaphragm you swapped at the end there isn’t anything else to it other than rings, could be sticky rings all carbon’d up, I had it on my e46 was burning 1 litre every 100 miles I put some berrymans b12 chemtool in the piston tops overnight and let it soak, cranked it without the spark plugs in let all the remaining gunk fly out the spark plug hole which is a must cos u don’t wanna put the plugs back in then hydro lock your engine when you start it up. Then any liquid that seeped past the rings into the crankcase you want to leave there for the initial startup and idle and leave in there idling for about 5 minutes no longer cos it’s thinner than water and knacker you bearings big time if either left in there for ages or driving under load with it in. But leaving it in there for about 5 mins acts as a sort of detergent to the whole inside of your engine after curing the sticky rings. I had no oil consumption after that.
Think you’re still far away from finishing the E36 unfortunately, good for us though I love this series. I think we need a defender video, a Cupra video (or miniseries), then a new car and new series. Keep it coming boys
Any oil on the exhaust being burnt off maybe from that rocker leak? Obviously check all spark plugs see what condition they’re in, check to see if coolant is getting anywhere it shouldn’t too, love the channel lads and what a series this has been so far 👌🏻
Oil on the exhaust should be on and off like that. And the spark plugs he mentioned he’s just replaced… plus that oil looked like Garry glitters piss 🤣
@@OzokuRJS ahh fairs I weren’t paying attention 😂
Would be ace to see the Cupra finished like the Compact and Passat, thats the car that got me into your channel! Please please dont give up on the V8 tho, these videos are giving me loads of inspiration to persevere with my own engine swap 😅
Yep. Run a compression test. I can’t explain why power would be up after a PCV swap. It might have been placebo. The OSV behind the timing chains (feeds the PCV system) can also fail and load up the intake.
Dont worry nothing wrong seems like the breather is dirty/stuck. For the low power check the engine fault codes it runs on 7 cilinders sounds like it. Can be doddgy cam sensor, crank and maf
Check crankcase breather boq, if clogged or incorrectly fitted, it will cause all of these symptoms, also not being able to hit rev limiter is a concern. It might be worth having the bottom end off her.
Also remember you've changed sump, so dipstick may not be accurate.
check compression on it when its warm with oil and without it, check if the PCV is working correctly, you can also replace the valve seals.
I think I'd enjoy seeing work on the cupra or defender more than a new car at the min, they feel like part of the channel and always enjoy watching them get better and better :)
Can’t wait to see this fully built/bulletproofed etc. You guys deserve it after all the work on it over the years. And for the giveaway answer: buy another car plz.
Keep your heads high boys you got this
Most the time when you gotta glue on the valve cover it's rings/blow-by. Too thin oil(fuel from blow-by) is not good for bearings. Sometimes thicker oil helps/prevents, did once for me(was rings) but also you gotta change it more often then to keep it thick enough. If you're super lucky, a good oil flush will unstick the rings, if they are stuck.... Flush is basically a last ditch, before pulling it try at that point. I wouldn't think it was just valve seals but it's possible since the pvc thing helped and intake was clearly full of oil. There could be multiple oil sources??? I normally delete any pvc and open vent my performance engines, to avoid sucking in oil anyway. Oil is like anti-octane, hence power loss, so there is hope you could make it ok-ish. If you still get tons of smoke from a open breather catch can, then it's not pvc anything or likely the valve seals. The knocking sound is concerning tho...
I think we're gunna do an open PCV vent to see if the smoking stops, but yeah either way I'm kinda over this engine hahah. Cheers for your input though! Sounds like you've got some decent experience with this. (btw knocking is the the gearbox lightened flywheel chatter we think)
@@boqer123 Catch can is worth a shot and you'll prob use it anyway if not. Engine Flush if you're ultra cheap, I've herd of diesel or kerosene being used LOL don't ask me on the method tho... Forgot the gearbox was confirmed noisy last episode. Sucks, that yahs don't seem to be having much luck with this build. Never installed a bad used engine myself but I know those who have... Not much else to do if so but rip it out & try again. Ganbatte!
@@boqer123 Also to be clear. If the Catch Can itself smokes like crazy, well.... you're prob boned.
I know you really wanted a v8, but an m50b25 straight swap, k64 turbo manifold, turbo etc and you would have been at a nice 400/450 bhp 🙈. Similar to Jimmys setup in his e36 touring
4:32 sounded like it was knocking fairly bad
Flywheel chatter pretty sure , goes away when our clutch in
It sounded like that in the last video, they mentioned it was clutch/gearbox related not engine 🤔
Get Andy in an old Disco and hit some lanes. Summer camping with the boys. 2 rigs are better than 1
Defender series all the way!
M60’s are known for their poor PCV system! Oil builds up in the intake, and under high rpm/high load, it all flows into cylinders 7-8, thus, burning oil heavily at high rpm!! Try adding an oil catch can!
I’ll also agree with other commenters, the oil looks extremely glittery/metallic! Might be a good excuse to pull the engine, and slap the heads/intake/timing chain stuff onto a non-vanos m62b44 bottom end!! Bump in HP/TQ, less bottom end issues(m60 Nikasil blocks are known for the cylinder walls wearing away). M60’s are also known for their oil pumps literally falling apart, the bolts holding the two halves of the oil pump together like to back out with engine vibrations/harmonics!
I don’t want to see a new project until the E36 is done completely!! I am doing the same project but with a M62 with a N62 oil pump and pan in my E36
Get Andy's Volvo on the lift ❤
the only thing I can think of is maybe the oil control rings on the pistons, might be letting some oil through, would make sense as its at higher revs.
The best gasket is hondabond this stuff is crazy i used it on my ktm and my bmw to secure the half moon on the rocker cover it is not leaking
Good job on the swap wish it wasn't such an arss for you. Would love to see some of the seat Leon.
I wouldn't jump on the shiny aspect of the old oil, could very well be bubbles from it draining, seen it happen a few times, small bubbles aerated into the oil making it look like a bunch of flakes. You let it settle and air out and then only you sweep through it to see if it's shiny and metallic. Btw using the magnet does nothing, pretty much everything you could worry about on this engine is non magnetic anyways.
For your leak and smoking issue I'd definitely check the crank venting system, because not being able to get the covers to seal and then have a problem of the engine burning oil definity rings an alarm in my brain about the venting.
Edit: Well, just seen you're on the right track in the end of the video, but still something wrong obviously.
I reckon seeing you mess around with an old mazda or summit similar would be jokes but love the cupra too
Would love to see this energy on a new car build! 👌🏼
New car, I've been looking into sports car for fun summer driving.
I reckon crack on with the defender, love seeing what ideas you come up with for it!
At least you got to feel the 300hp in the end🤣
Cupra, and do a track day (y) also, you know the "w" in oil doesn't mean weight yeah.... have you checked to make sure you are getting full throttle at the TB when the pedal is fully down? hows it breathing when running, take the cap off and see if there excessive crankcase pressure
A video on the Cupra would be great 👍🏻 I bought a Leon FR MK2 just cos I’ve watched so many of your vids on Colin 😂
compression check first. also m60 is mostly ali engine so magnet wont catch it. that oil looked glittery af
Compression test solid across all 8 cylinders but yeah oil definitely not great
Great video, even though it was a bit shit for you. Love the look and sound of this hog. Please get the E36 sorted before moving onto the defender next. Ciao
Keep at it broski. Get the cupra ready for a track day too
Colin the Cupra needs some love! Also, Naan bread pizzas go hard, perfect unit lunch!
waiting for the Boq’s Bites cookbook
Defender or new car I would say maybe new car cause defender is literally so perfect anyway! 👌 good job guys!!
Been theyre sinds i bought my car , 323 1998 , i think every bmw from that era engine had it , only way tht works is to get a catchcan or build something to lat the air escape and the oil get back into the engine .
ive tried 2x with new pcvs , first it blew up full of oil in the engine , and last year it just f up my main sensors (crank, camshaft sensor)
so basically vent it to atmospheric because it has crazy blowbye or just put new piston rings maybe in it /rebuild
Defender next, i wanna see some off roading in that bad boiii 🙂
Defender tour would be legit 🤟
More defender vids. First should be cleaning it 😂
Loving the build but I think a new car is called for once you're happy with the beamer👌
I love the colour of the E36 and also i love that Seat Leon the best Seat ever in my mind
Get a mk2 focus ST please. They’re so much fun to drive and the world is your oyster when it comes to modifying
Loving the content guys always smashing it out the park !! It’s a shame you build a nice motor but came to this you’ll get it done mate, I think you should get the cupra out of hiding and do some content 😊
Crankshaft bearings are done probably, the oil was glittery and the clutch rattled when it was pressed so probably axial bearings also gone on crankshaft that’s my guess
And whit glittery oil the piston rings are wore down
Compression check first thing. If that's all good then the rest of the pcv system
second that brother
We did it, solid across all 8!
As someone who cooks in other peoples houses occasionally, get yourself any mug, flip it upside down and use it as a whetstone. Great for putting a quick and dirty edge of a blunt knife!
Love the videos, especially the cooking parts. Would love to see you guys build a ducati
Could be the valve stem seals boys? I had the same issue on my 645Ci, I know its a different engine but the symptoms were the same. It would miss fire, Chuck out smoke at random times especially after Idle and it never felt like it was on full power.
21:03 Big up the long reset🔥
Cupra needs some love! Been to long. Also, oil did have metal in it, I’d do a compression test or maybe talk to a bm specialist, could be a fair few little things causing issues
Also, at the end could that just be the excess oil left in the intake/pipes or is it still just as bad in there?
why not just LS swap it ?, something is up with the piston rings, its producing way too much blow by also explains why the gasket cover blew open and was spraying. do a compression test and a leak down test you will find out whats going on. I also head a slight knocking at idle (sounded rodknock) . good luck brother.
Deffo the cupra, such a sick car!
loved watching this series
Work on the Cupra, I own one and would love the inspiration to get mine sorted by seeing you do bits on yours😂
Came for the cars stayed for the cooking lol 👌🏻 also adventure in the defender or new project car
Has to be breathing related IMO, it’s smoking after building pressure and letting off the throttle, oil being forced into combustion chambers. Also doesn’t sound quite right to be, like it’s on 7 cylinders
No idea why it’s got glittery oil though
Love the e36 videos. Next vid would be fun to watch you guys buying new car.
Blocked breather building pressure? Would love to see some Defender stuff!
I thought valve stem seal until i saw the metal in the oil. Definitely hear knocking at the start of the video would definitely not have been driving it. Engine not in good shape now regardless 😔. Such a wicked build I would dream of having an e36 that clean. Hope you can get another engine for it.
Was knocking in the last vid, it goes away when the clutch is depressed so not rod knock
It’s flywheel chatter not knock but still annoying hahah
@@boqer123 well that is great news. Please don't get disheartened by this. When you did the first pull in the car park it made everything worth it.
@@anon7661 thanks mate you’re right
(For the giveaway) i say get a new car maybe some kinda max power style build and get the rest of the guys to all start a max power project! would give loads of options for content and creativity along the way! also... Been watching your videos for years, my favourite is probably when you took adam ivell out in the cupra
I'd like to see a new car build or a breakdown of plans for your others, either way ill be watching and enjoying 😊
did you guys wash the intake manifold before you installed it, if not that's probably where the residual smoke is burning off of
I made those wraps, banging 👌
Favorite cooking channel for sure
Love these vids. That oil didn’t look good 😔. Also got to get a new project car 😎
defender revamp for summer time activities!
The BBQ 🍗 looks amazing 😻 ❤
Love the 36 series but I think you should get something japense new car!
Either Cupra or New car, so glad to see the 36 on the road again (even though it was limited time)
