The way we Bengalis organize Durga Puja now started in the 15th Century (around 1450) by a Zamindar of Bengal, and the temple where it originated is still there (present-day Bangladesh). However, it gradually spread across the entire Bengal. The origin of Durga Puja Dates back mid-5th Century.

This first public puja was Bagbazar Sarbojanin and was started in 1918 . A pandal is a temporary structure constructed to house the Goddess. Now this has become a huge phenomenon with about 40000 public pujas in Kolkata alone. Also, the Durga Puja in Bengal is celebrated as a homecoming of the Goddess to her paternal home accompanied by her children. At the end of her holiday she returns to her husband's home. That's why the mood is of celebration , feasting and fun just as it would be when the daughter comes home.
