He really is the complete package. His compositions are so refined and melodic. But when it's time to use dynamics, he nails that too. Id say one of the finest musicians of the last 40 years. Jan Akkerman as well.
I may one day chance upon Thijs sitting on an old tree stump or sat in a tree playing his flute in a deep dark wood after an April storm. He is the stuff of legends.
He is my favourite Dutch musician. A master on the flute, the keys and think about the amazing vocals he had. Also a composer with great melodies.
You forgot yodelling & whistling. :) So talented guy and ever humble.
@@micowikstrom7182 And the HARMONIES?? Beyond this world!! He is really the "complete package" as Frank Carmack wrote above. And I'm always stunned by the fact that in his compositions and in Focus music we find almost every musical style and genre: Medieval, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Impressionistic, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Country, European Folk Music, Reggae, Tango, Fusion, MPB ("Brazilian Popular Music", in english). A great deal of music history condensed, sometimes, in one single theme - as is the case with European (Rap)sody. All best wishes to you! Keep on FOCUSED!
I forgot: Funk and Soul too.
a wonderful talent, was lucky enough to get his autograph when i saw Focus back in 1999ish as he stood at the bar having a quiet pint, an absolute gent.
Thijs van Leer, creo yo yo Soy tu mas fiel admirador, no hay quién haga sonar la flauta traversa como ud, thijs van Leer
I've always loved Focus and their music and it was great to go and see Thijs and Jan perform (separately). I met and spoke to both of them, lovely guys and fantastic musicians.
Literally the nicest people you could ever meet
Perfect song. I will never forget Focus Band. One of the best band all over the world. For the eternity!!
I agree. They are my favorite.
Yes, for sure, my friends!! We will never forget our Dutch Masters!! And please check out the more recent albums Focus 9 (2006), Focus 10 (2012) and Focus 11 (2019). When I wonder if there could exist something more uplifting and beautiful than the Focus 3 album, they came with more and more unbelieveble music!!! Amok in Kindergarten is one of my favorites!!! Greetings from extreme south of Brasil!!
fantastic songs by the master....
As the time passing I turn back more and more to the seventies classics, specially Focus. I can still find something new in theirs music.
Just Brilliant. I have followed Focus since first hearing 'Tommy' in the 1970's. The musicians are on another level. Carnival Fugue is amazing. Jazz rock in the structure of classical music.
what a marvellous musician.A Legend.
One of the most beautiful pieces in whatever musical genre ever created. I love Thijs voice in the record.
he was a wizard from another planet !!!
was?
Carnival Fugue so beautiful. Great bloke if you meet him face to face too. Thanks for the fantastic music Thijs. 🎶👌💜
Wow I had never seen this before Thanx for sharing...
I have loved Thijs Van Leer and FOCUS since the 1970's
The man is a Genius , I had the chance to meet him when they came to Montreal Canada
in the 2002 he autographed my copy of the Focus 8 cd.
A very sweet man ,a true gentleman .
Genius at work. A beautiful composition👌
That version of Carnival Fugue is pure genius
Love the touch of how at the end of carnival fugue sounds a bit like the beginning of I Am The Walrus by The Beatles pure genius
Yes, it's a priceless quoting. Check out the Sanctus from Dona Nobis Pacem (1981), by Pedal Point, with van Leer as the composer and keyboardist/flutist/backing vocallist. This coda with the Beatles quoting was already there!
A great musician!!One of the top of XX century.
I wish Focus had recorded this version on the album Moving Waves.
Ben trots op mijn broer: beide prachtige composities, die ik al bijna mijn hele leven ken....
Zou ik ook zijn. Een zeer complex stuk trouwens om te spelen.
Their musical Accomplishments were indefinable . Otherworldly compositions 🎶.
Even from my phone speaker that piano sounds bright and a bit special. Love this man's music
He inspired me to play the flute!!!
Mij ook!
Ik was ongeveer 8 ,en hoorde hem via mijn broers lp's
Ben ondertussen 40 jaar zelf professioneel fluitist, heb alle grote der aarde gehoord!
Hij heeft die aparte,warme,zangerige,authentieke fluittoon!
Ongeevenaard.
Rare kwibus, maar onaards geniaal!
Jammer dat hij zo dik & kaal moest worden ,maar ja....ik ook😪
Peter Horah Me too!!
A stunningly beautiful work.
A true Master....!!!!!
Thijs, a fine men with human feeling.
I've always been a fan of the flute in rock music. I think that the earliest bit of Focus I can remember would have been House of the King back in the 1970s though it wouldn't be until the 1980s that I found out about Focus and started buying their albums. Everything up to Mother Focus and Ship of Memories. It's all good stuff and Thijs really has a presence with his flute and his organ (hem hem!) I can listen to him and Jan all day!
Not spoken English when they could have, but music was heavenly! Thanks from Bangkok.
Will gladly give you a synopsis of what was said. Let me know!
tis van leer modern mozart. hands down. love u father from vancouver bc.
Schitterend!! Dank je Thijs
Helemaal mee je eens, ik zag Thijs in de jaren 70 live en ook in de nw. samnestelling live enkele jaren terug. Blijft goed hoewel de oude Focus mijn voorkeur heeft.
My favorite album is the renesaince album of 1986 titeld Thys Van Leer 😁
Is that available on Compact disc? It is a great album.
Any Dutch speakers here to translate something from what they are talking about? Although the music speaks for itself. What a brilliant pair of compositions!!!
Gran mago Thijs van Leer!!
Beautiful
Gracias Maestro / Thank you master!
I'm looking for chords or sheet music for "Moving Waves"!
Anybody?
Two wonderful pieces of music. Agree with all the positive comments below.
Ahhhh que final!!!!!!!!! ;D Genial Thijs, siempre el buen gusto
Magnificet!
Excelente
hermoso...
prachtig!!!
Utterly fantastic. I think he's bettered the original versions here. The new coda to Carnival Fugue is such an improvement on the 'carnival' section of the original which always sounded out of place and anti-climacticly lame in comparison with the thrilling unpredictable harmonic twists of the preceding intro and fugue.
I completely agree with you, my friend! Please check out the album Dona Nobis Pacem from 1981 he recorded with a group called Pedal Point (one dutch, one japanese and two chileans performing a Fusion-Baroque-Funky-Renaissance entire Catholic Mass sung in Latin). On that record the Sanctus is actually this very music he played here as "Carnival Fugue", with the vary same ending with the marvelous "I Am The Walrus" quoting at the very end. And they sang the fugue A CAPELLA!!!! Absolutely genius, unbelieveble music!!! Greetings from the extreme south of Brasil!!
@@guilhermetavares1975 Thank you so much for that recommendation! I managed to find it here on YT - You're right it's fantastic! I'm currently teaching myself to play Carnival Fugue - it's like a musical maze - will post a video when I can plat it well enough...
@@halodust1304 Lovely to hear from you! Talking personally with Thijs van Leer after a Focus show he said to me that this Mass is his Magnum Opus (I bought the CD directly from the band some years prior to that talk). It's a marvelous coda, without a doubt exploring even more the fugue subject (van Leer is an absolute genius!). I'm trying to play Carnival Fugue as well on piano (20+ years now, what a mission!). But when I was close enough to play relatively well all the prelude and fugue part of it, I discovered this coda and made my own adaptation for solo piano, so the process are more complicate since them. When I manage to play well enough I wll make a video too (probably it will require some more years of studying). Please send me your e-mail and I send you a gift related to this topic. All best wishes!
Sneaky ending taken from "I am the Walrus"
Prachtig die laatste tonen... i’m the walrus....;-)
Carnival Fugue and sanctus :)
