Old Nightwish - the kind I fell in love with. I saw the song live for the first time at Pakkahuone (Wishes From Eternity), and from the same concert, you can also see Tuomas playing air guitar in front of the stage during the song FantasMic. Definitely the best Nightwish concert I’ve ever been to.

Tuomas is really on during this time. Maybe he wants to put all in for Tarja too in her last NW concert. He has said that he do not want to be at front on shows (the focal point) but here he is petty well there in this show.

Tuomas, Tarja, Emppu, Jukka, they all went to the same school. Tarja also took piano lessons from Tuomas' mom, so they knew each other since they were about 12/13 years old.
Shortly after graduation Tuomas had this idea of founding a band (originally campfire acoustic music) and he went to Tarja's house with some demos, because he knew she was a good singer. Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja were the first three original members :)
Tarja had just begun her classical education before they founded Nightwish, and Tuomas switched to Metal to suit her singing style more, while Tarja had to figure out how to adapt her singing technique to make it sound good outside of purely classical music.
They all showed a lot of talent and creativity at barely 20 years 🙏🏽
The "From Wishes to Eternity" concert is the earliest concert and just really really beautiful!

Thank you!! Another great performance from them!
About Tarja and Marko, they toured together last year and they will start another tour together this month. They will tour around Europe and then South-America.
In 2017 there was a Finnish metal Christmas tour called Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) in Finland. Both Tarja and Marko took part in it. That's where they properly met for the first time after Tarja's firing from Nightwish. They sang together on stage multiple songs, including Ave Maria. Then at one point during that tour Marko gathered all the grew of Raskasta Joulua into Tarja's backstage and publicly apologised from Tarja. And in 2017 is when those two talked things through.
Then later in 2023 they both had been booked to the same summer festival in Switzerland. Tarja requested from Marko if they could sing the Phantom of the Opera together. Marko was excited about it and agreed. As Marko was simultaneously making his new solo album (wich will actually come out tomorrow, 7th of February), he had a song called Left on Mars which he suggested to Tarja if she liked to sing it together with him. That's how their first duet song came to be. They had so much fun singing and spending time together that they planned a several tours together. And as I said earlier now they are friends.
If you want to hear something more recent from Tarja's solo career, something that is written by her, I recommend a song called Innocence from the Circus Life concert (from 2020).
I think the most recent professional recording of Tarja is her cover of Within Temptation's song Angels. It's from last fall. That's basically Tarja just showing off her vocal range for 4 minutes.😄

I figured you would come to appreciate Tarja's voice eventually, she and Floor are both great singers, just different.

U have to understand that Tarja is Nightwish's original and classic singer and she recorded the band's first 5 albums that made the band famous worldwide... It was a huge blow when she was fired. Most bands would not survive a major lead vocal change...
After Forever are apparently attempting a comeback without Floor Jansen... Leaves' Eyes have replaced founding vocalist Liv Kristine w/ a great singer Elina Siirala, and they seem to be doing well.
But that was not always the case...
Iron Maiden declined rapidly without vocalist Bruce Dickinson, replacing him w/ vocalist Blaze Bayley ... Judas Priest also could not replicate their past success w/ vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens after classic singer Rob Halford left the band... Motley Crue floundered after vocalist Vince Neil was replaced by John Corabi... Anthrax also dropped in popularity after vocalist Joe Belladonna was replaced by John Bush...

There is no one truth, but I'm just going to re-post this, what I told you before you did The Poet and the Pendulum. It's my version of course, but I'm not alone with any of these thoughts. And I want to stress, that even Marko has now apologized from Tarja, and they are good friends again:
TPATP is the first track from their 6th studio album "Dark Passion Play, which was the first album with the 2nd vocalist of Nightwish, Anette Olzon. It's a brilliant 14 minute composition with multiple parts, right there with "Ghost Love Score" and "The Greatest Show On Earth". It's probably the most personal song for Tuomas, and he doesn't have all the words coming through his ear monitors at live. The name of the song is borrowed from Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, the story of a man who's sentenced to death and tortured by the Spanish Inquisition, using - among other things - a razor sharp pendulum that will cut him right in half. TPATP has quotes from that story (and more), so don't be too confused about some of the lyrics. They are metaforically describing Tuomas' feelings. It also has part "Mother and Father", which includes words that Tuomas' mother said to him.
So, the song is about Tuomas' dark times after guys fired Tarja (right after their "End Of An Era" concert in 2005). Tarja had already informed guys that she will leave after the next album, but somehow guys ended up humiliating Tarja, and fired her with an open letter. In the letter they told quite private things about all the things behind the scenes, and of course it was only their side of the story. Tuomas got huge amount of hate from the fans, and he got really depressed. So the song is very dark. Just for the record (and against some pretty popular believe), Tuomas denies that he had any suicidal thoughts. You should read both of those letters to understand how bad it was, but bear in mind, that it was written by disappointed angry young men (or man). You can find the letter that guys wrote and Tarja's response with some Googling.
The whole sound of first era Nightwish was "based" on Tarja's voice, which is why losing Tarja felt "the end of the world" for the most fans. Nightwish was founded in 1996, and it was supposed to be only acoustic mood music, just demo or two, maybe even an album, but definitely never live shows. When Tuomas and Emppu went to ask Tarja to sing on their demo, they had no idea that she had started her classical training (and they were a bit shocked when they heard her powerful voice in the studio). The girl they knew from high school had totally different sound now. That was where Tuomas decided that they might want to ditch the acoustic idea and try something else. So on their second demo they switched to electric guitar and asked Jukka to play the drums, and the rest is history. The record company liked that demo and wanted to publish it as it is, so it became their first album "Angels Fall First".
About all the drama...you don't want to believe any of that "greedy diva who didn't care about the band or fans" bs you are going to hear. That open letter was incredibly childish and cruel way to handle this situation. I think that the main problems were Tarja's husband Marcelo (which guys didn't like at all), and the fact that Tarja matured faster than boys. She didn't want to travel on smokey bus with bunch of drunken rock stars anymore, nor having a constant after gig parties. Can anyone seriously blame her for that? She also wanted a solo career, which she had trained for (they all have one or even multiple solo careers now, but back then guys wanted 100% devotion). Guys also didn't care about Tarja's needs (like privacy or decent food). They also booked gigs without Tarja's permission, even on dates which Tarja had specifically said she had something else to do, and she had given her schedules several months prior. I'm sure she could have done something better too, but guys were really immature at that time, and they have admitted themselves, that back then Nightwish was everything to them. I'm also pretty sure they all said a lot of things to each other what they really didn't mean. People tend to do that when they are tired, frustrated and/or angry. Any of that doesn't even matter, because the main point is that guys should have kept things clean. Tarja was going to leave after next album in anyway, so guys could have just told her that "ok then, we don't need you on the next album, and we can tell the fans that this was mutual decision".
People also need to understand one more thing. Tarja is not only a singer but a great pianist and brilliant composer too. With Nightwish she had no chance to write her own music. So of course she wanted to invest to her own career. And for me it's clear, that guys were asking more from Tarja, than she had never agreed. But like I said, both sides could have probably done better job how to handle all that...and I'm sure Marcelo did more damage than good, even that he only wanted the best for Tarja. There are always at least two sides of the story.
Speaking of which, there was this theory many of us old fans had, that Tuomas was in love with Tarja (or at least had a crush on her), and he was just too jealous to Marcelo. I still believe that this might have been one of the reasons why things went south. If you just think about all the songs he wrote to Tarja (She is my Sin, Ever Dream, Ghost Love Score, Wish I had an Angel, Beauty of the Beast etc etc), and think what he have written after her, there is a huge difference. And the demo version of TPATP has line "for eleven years I have been strapped on to this altar", which could refer that he has been love-sick for the whole time. Otherwise it wouldn't really make any sense. Who knows but Tuomas himself. There is also this line about 1000 pages of erased text, which could refer that he had written more songs to Tarja already, and maybe that was one of the reasons he was so pissed of Tarja's urge to leave. One can only speculate.
Yes, I'm an old fan since 1998, and I'm still a big fan of Tarja, so you can think this is just a fan talk. But I have watched huge amount of interviews and documentaries, and I've read pretty damn many comments from the people who have actually met Tarja, lived near her etc, and they all say that she is very lovely and down to earth, and she really loves her fans. And that is exactly how I have always seen her. So it is impossible for me to believe those accusations guys made.
The reason I wanted to share my version of this is, that so many of these new fans tend and even want to accuse Tarja. It just feels wrong. How would they feel if this same thing would happen to Floor? Anyone can say it's different with Floor, but basically it was the same exact thing when it happened to Tarja. We old fans couldn't imagine something like this to happen, and we were devastated. I had followed their "Cinderella story" for 7 years, read all the articles, seen all the interviews I could, waited for their next albums release several times, and then they ended it in this disqusting way. I was pissed, just like most of other fans. She was the sound of Nightwish I fell in love with, and I will always be grateful of that, and cherish all these old recordings.

This is a great comment! I agree with most of the things that you said!
Yes, and now that Marko is no longer in Nightwish he has been saying that the biggest problems were the management teams....even back then. Both managements, Nightwish and Tarja's. That it was more like a war between the management and they were just fueling the fire and apparently spreading lies.
Also if you want to hear Tarja's side of things, she did a press conference (there are English subtitles for it) after she got fired where she explains a lot of things (naturally some people have chose not to believe her, but that's your choice if you believe it or not).
But like @NightwishArena said there are always at least two sides to the story.
And I believe Tarja and the guys experienced things differently so there is also already one reason why their stories differ a bit... not because someone is lying (as some people believe).

I agree. After everything that happened, I always believed that time would put everything in its place and someday we would see a whole new picture of what was going on. And indeed time has started to set things right, first thing that happened was the touching reunion of Marco and Tarja. I admit that I didn't think that Marko would be first one to rebuild the broken relationship, I thought it would be Emppu. But on other hand it's not surprising, because Marko has most experience in life. And I totally agree with your conclusions about relationship story being hidden in lyrics. Read lyrics carefully, compare them to what was going on in band at time and it will all make sense to you. And Tarja has an interesting answer to Tuomas in songs Enought and Diva.

Tarja launched her solo career in 2007 (Same year Nightwish released their album 'Dark Passion Play') w/ her 2nd solo album 'My winter storm'...after her debut album in Finnish ("Henkäys Ikuisuudesta ")... Tarja has since released 9 studio albums to date but doesn't tour as often as Nightwish.... Subsequent Tarja albums - 'What lies beneath' (2010)... 'Colours in the dark' (2013)... 'Ave Maria - En Plein Air' (2015)... 'The Shadow self' (2016)... 'From spirits and ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)' (2017)... 'In the raw' (2019)... and 'Dark Christmas' (2023)
Marko Hietala (bass/ vocals) left Nightwish in 2021 and reconciled w/ Tarja recently (They did a song together - 'Left on Mars') and toured together in 2024... Marko said he was not happy about the decision to fire Tarja and claimed that the business side of Nightwish made him leave the band in the end.
    So, BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGHTWISH:
Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) had played in metal bands in the 90's and after leaving the Finnish Army, he decided to write songs for an acoustic project and one of the songs was titled 'Nightwish'... Emppu Vuorinen (guitar) was enlisted and Tarja Turunen (vocals), who was 18 at the time and studied under the same music teacher as Tuomas, agreed to sing on the first Nightwish demos in 1996.
However, Tuomas was inspired to write more songs after working w/ Tarja and decided to make Nightwish a metal project in 1997 w/ Jukka Nevalainen (drums) joining... They recorded and released their debut album 'Angels fall first' which was released on Spinefarm Records in Finland... The Nightwish single 'The Carpenter' became an unexpected hit in Finland.
Nightwish played their first show in December 1997 w/ a session bassist... Sami Vanska (bass) joined soon after. Tuomas sang the male vocals but decided he didn't like his voice and decided to use other male vocalists.
2nd Nightwish album 'Oceanborn' was released in 1998 and it was more musically creative than the debut album... The ballad 'Sleeping Sun' became a successful single in Europe... Nightwish signed record contracts internationally by 2000.
3rd album 'Wishmaster' was released in 2000 and was their most successful album to date... followed by the EP 'Over the hills and far away' (a Gary Moore cover) in 2001 and their first concert video 'From wishes to eternity'... However, Tuomas was becoming increasingly unhappy w/ fame - he felt like he had 'lost his innocence' and was making records to please the music industry, rather than making music that he felt passionately about... Marko Heitala (bass) joined in 2002 and began singing the male vocals for the 4th album 'Century Child' ... Nightwish took a break as Tarja went away to attend university and eventually got married... Tuomas wanted to break up Nightwish but reconsidered after more songs came together by 2003.
In 2004, Nightwish released 5th album 'Once'... and toured N. America in clubs for the first time. They were already playing large venues across Europe and S. America on that tour.
When the 'Once' tour ended in 2005, Nightwish fans were shocked when an 'open letter' posted on Nightwish's website announced that singer Tarja Turunen had been fired... There had been issues between Tarja and the band for some time (She refused to appear on the Nightwish documentary 'End of innocence' in 2003)... Again, Tuomas considered breaking up Nightwish again.
After a long break, Tuomas had written a full album and decided to audition new singers... Anette Olzen (vocals) from the Swedish band Alyson Avenue was picked in 2007, despite having a pop vocal delivery instead of an operatic voice. She recorded the album 'Dark Passion Play' which became the biggest selling Nightwish record w/ the hit single 'Amaranth' introducing their new singer... The tour wore on into 2009 and Anette was put to the test as Tarja fans did not want her as the singer, and she went through a divorce as well.
In 2011, Nightwish announced a concept album 'Imaginaerum'... their 2nd w/ singer Anette Olzen... and a movie that would accompany the record afterwards... Anette had remarried and had another child. Nightwish made plans to tour into 2013 w/ multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley joining ... but those plans were disrupted in 2012 when Anette announced that she was pregnant w/ her third child... In the Fall of 2012, Nightwish had an extensive US tour but Anette insisted on doing it... Meanwhile, band management contacted Dutch singer Floor Jansen about possibly coming in as a touring vocalist when Anette was too far along to be on tour; Floor agreed and signed on but Anette was opposed to that move.
During the US tour in 2012, Anette fell ill in Denver and was hospitalized... Nightwish had to improvise their show that night w/ singers from support band Kamelot... Anette would do 1 more show but she could not perform optimally.
The decision to send Anette Olzen home and end her time in Nightwish was made... Floor Jansen was handed a plane ticket and given 48 hours to learn the songs in Nightwish's setlist and made her debut at their show in Seattle... At the end of the tour in 2013, both Floor Jansen and Troy Donockley were asked to join Nightwish permanently.
Floor Jansen made her debut on the live album 'Storytime, Showtime' by Nightwish in 2013... She had made a career w/ the Dutch symphonic metal band After Forever, which disbanded by 2009 and she recorded 2 albums a ReVamp after that... Floor's first album w/ Nightwish was 'Endless forms most beautiful' in 2015 but drummer Jukka Nevalainen announced that he was leaving the band and drums were going to be played by drummer Kai Hahto from 2015 forward.
In 2018, Nightwish announced a best-of release 'Decades' and a 20th anniversary world tour ... Another live release 'Decades: Live in Buenos Aires' was released in 2019.
In 2020, Nightwish released a sequel album to 'Endless forms most beautiful'... 'Human Nature'... but the pandemic halted all live promotion for the record... In early 2021, Marko Hietala (bass/ vocals) announced that he was leaving Nightwish... Jukka Koskinen (bass) replaced him and his first show w/ Nightwish was a livestream performance online... followed by a world tour in 2021.
Floor Jansen had married Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl and Floor was pregnant w/ a second child at the end of the tour in 2023 after being treated for cancer in 2022... She recorded a solo album 'Paragon' in 2022.
In 2024, Nightwish completed the trilogy of albums w/ 'Yesterwynde'... but declined to tour for their latest album. Tuomas has stated that Nightwish would return w/ another studio album and tour possibly in 2026 but all members r staying busy w/ projects... Floor is working on another solo album... Tuomas has the band Auri w/ his wife, singer Johanna Kurkela and Troy Donockley... Kai Hahto and Jukka Koskinen have Wintersun... Former bassist Marko Hietala is promoting his solo albums
