  • Amiga Format issue 42, January 1993 perusal. Potentially a new regular feature when I thumb through an old computer magazine and share my subdued thoughts on the matter.

Wow. I remember owning this magazine and recall having no idea what Amos was, and to this day I still don't. Until now...31 YEARS LATER. Finally, I can rest (smiles at camera, and slowly fades away becoming transparent to the background)

This was the actual magazine that got me into AMOS - having previously only really programmed on the BBC Micro during primary school breaks. I sort of skipped basic programming on the C64 as it just wasn't as slick as the BBC.
AMOS was amazing - such power over graphics and sound. It definitely had an effect on me and I am working from home coding in Javascript watching this during my lunch break.
I can't help but feel that more should be done to get kids into programming these days. We had AMOS which we got free on a magazine and it ran on the same machine we played our games on - today - all these announcements of Xbox Series X and PS5 - no means to use these machines to bridge into coding. the future generations will expect courses to get them into coding - when will people learn that school, college, uni etc doesn't make great coders/game makers - getting them interested and hooked young on building stuff for fun is what does it.

I love the article at 4:49 where they talk about the "New IDE hard drive technology" and speculate its ability to drastically drop the price of hard drives. I remember purchasing a 3gb hard drive in 1998 for $400. its crazy to see that we went from 180mb hd's in 1993 being extreme, to 3gb drives being average in 5 years.

KGB (aka Conspiracy) is one of my all-time favourite games. I even gave my son the main characters first name as his middle name! Good to see it got some recognition at one point in time (91% in this mag).

Oh god, I remember Robocod (the James Bond ripoff). I loved that game.

I loved AMOS! In fact, I bought AMOS while I was saving up for my Amiga 500, so I had it before I had an Amiga!

I'd forgotten about the utterly disgusting number of adverts in these mags! Didn't stop me buying them as a kid though haha it was all about the demo disks!

Gosh they made such a big thing about Universal Monsters and it never ended up released. I remember my dad had this issue. Found Lemmings 2 way too hard.

Drop your music track volume by half, your voice is competing with it a bit:)
