THROWBACK TUESDAY: The Proton I HATE The Most! The Saga LMST | EvoMalaysia.com

- I MEAN NO OFFENSE to anyone who currently owns this car, so please don't be offended. My rant and wrath is not directed at you in any way, shape or form, in fact I actually feel sorry for you, cos you've been cheated. Resoundingly...
No, my anger at this Saga LMST is 100% directed at those responsible for coming out with this monstrosity, and daring to call it a 'car'. Worse than that, they actually made people pay for it with their hard-earned money. Let's put it this way, I would not want this car if it was given to me FOC.
This car is a prime example of why some people have NEVER forgiven Proton, or forgotten the automotive atrocities they've committed in the past, and it's just ONE in a long line of cars that pooped-out (not a typo) from our first national carmaker during the 'dark ages'.
Cars slapped together over a lunch break with the cheapest possible components that were supplied by the lowest possible bidder. Cars that were made with zero quality control and no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Cars made just to turn a profit, and nothing else. Consumer be dammed! This car absolutely reeks of all that.
Granted, they were relatively inexpensive to buy new, but that is still NO EXCUSE for the level of "cheapness" the cars were infused with, because it IS POSSIBLE to make a cheap car not look, and more importantly 'feel' cheap*, IF you care enough to only try. Basically, those responsible for this car didn't give a sh1t, AT ALL.
(*Example, the VW Beetle was a cheap car, a "people's car", for the masses, they were lovely and didn't look or feel cheap, point of fact, they still don't!)
In all honesty, Clarkson should have destroyed this car with a sledgehammer in front of a Proton dealership in the UK, instead of a Perodua Kelisa, ( • Video ), which was a much better car than this pile of crap. Yes, I know the Saga LMST was not offered for sale in the UK, and it's no surprise why, who would want it? Rhetorical question. Instead, Proton pawned it off to us Malaysians, a big, shiny, turd.
In parting, I just wanna reiterate, no offense intended to anyone, this is just my personal view of the Saga LMST (even the earlier Saga LMSS is a much better car), which should never have been offered for sale to the public. My anger rose again when I managed to drive this car after a very long time. I was reminded how much I hated it when it was new, and I realised I hate it even more now.
It's the most atrocious car from Proton, ever. Let's hope with Geely in the picture this kind of utter rubbish NEVER happens again. We Malaysians love our cars, so to Proton Holdings Berhad, give us something to love. You're on the right track now, PLEASE keep it that way, and may you never foist this kind of rubbish on us ever again.

PLEASE read my description. I'll reiterate again, I mean no offence to any owners, this is just my personal view. I call it as I see it, always have, always will. - CW.
Noted sir 😄
Bro, do you know that the car accelerator is in shit position
and my dad owned it until now, as u said the engine is superd with the gearbox. No issue except for some wear and tear items. And the cars engine will run even the world has blowed up. Ours had 308k until now no any issues. The problem is the accelator position and materials on the car
Chris what do you think about the SE edition the silver one
Agreed my friend's uncle is using it to masuk kebun
i owned this car for a good 11 years. This car made me work hard and slogged and made sure i will never ever own another proton in my lifetime.
Thank you for sharing that with us, yes, if anything, this car is good for aspirational-goals, indeed 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽👍🏾😊
Lol same
Dear Chris, I m owning this car for three years now. I got it from a person tht took good care of it. Purchased at rm7k (13 years old car) the interior he did took good care of it. I just spend another rm3k plus. I traveled 30k kilometers. Bring it to Mossy Forest , cameron highland, maran temple, penang,
The only downside for me is fuel consumption but now petrol cost below rm2 per litre. Oh yes, the old owner did convert to automatic transmission.
All you need is , sound proofing the door and the hood.
My case, I change few parts, the water pump, timing belt, tinted it, bluetooth single din head unit, wrap seat, sound proofing door n hood, front speakers.
This is nice car I own man. Hopefully I wanted to used it for another 10years let see.
That's great to hear bud, I'm happy for u. This car could have been a lot better with proper execution and nice choice of materials. Glad to hear it's serving u well 🙏🏽😊
As a mechanic, i hear lots complaining about this car, but from my opinion from having lots of proton cars before including this one, i dont have much to complain about mine. It was cheap, reliable and fairly easy to maintain and it was actually the car that i first practiced in and the reason why i love manual cars... I get that it was ugly and feels cheap and plastic but it was cheap and reliable, dont remember it ever giving problem or breaking down... I actually enjoyed this car, yes the powertrain was good.... My father eventually got a mitsubishi triton and gave this to my grandfather who used it for a few more years and only sold it for an automatic axia and when he sold it it was still good and reliable as it was....
Just my humble opinion as a mechanic who has used a handfull of proton cars before.....
Ye betul tu boss. Kereta pertama saya belajar bawa saga lmst 2004 exzos garang.
Sekian~
Betul!! Good fun fact, thanks for reminding! Kebal tu mmg, powertrain mantap 👍🏽🙏🏽😀
Saya ada saga lmst tahun 2005. Dah 5 tahun pakai. Enjin Dan transmisi smooth kaw2 tak ada masalah. But I totally agree with this video. Proton used cheap materials for this car.The build quality is sakai especially on the interior. The air conditioning is crap. All the buttons feel cheap. The fabric is so easy to worn out. The top side of the dashboard cracked just because my car was parked under the hot sun. The aircond vents destroyed long ago and now it just looks like 4 giant holes. The passenger door jammed. And while driving, I can hear like a loose screws sound all around me.
Now I don't drive it anymore for one year because I bought a new saga vvt.
My advise: if you're currently dating someone, please don't buy this car. It is an embarrassment 😂
Hahahaha!!! That's good advice, instant "friendzone" if u do folks, be warned. Lol!!! Thanks for the feedback bud, really good 🙏🏽😁👍🏾
Bro, sebelum ni kawan perempuan saya pernah tumpang LMST Oren tapi nasib baik tak kena friendzone🤣

Dont forget your rainbow umbrella
Now i know what the LMST stands for - "Let's Make Some Trash"
Let’s Make Sumbatkarburetor Trash
Honestly yes, it’s really badly made. It was the first car my mom ever owned and it already started giving us problems after rolling out of the showroom in 2004. Central locking didn’t work properly so the driver door would get jammed, windows wouldn’t wind up, rattling plastic everywhere and the seats faded after 3 years of ownership. And weirdly if we turned the Ac fan speed to no.2, the ac just shuts off on its own. We made complaints to Proton as it was still under warranty at that time, but the only answer we got back was “ If you don’t like our cars, who ask you to buy?”. So yeah first and last proton we ever owned. Oh and also the boot turns into a swamp every time it rains because of the badly fitted taillights.
Yes, the spoiler, side skirts and a huge exhaust came with the car from the factory. We had the 1.3 model which if not wrong cost about 43k.
43k?! Jeez, it wasn't worth 15. Sorry to hear about your story with this car, it had some good ideas, but very badly executed. And that SA who said that to u should have been fired on the spot, what a dickhead.
43k is just way too high. That hurts. I only got it for 36k in 2006 but the value drop to 27k brand new 6 months later.
@@cedrice8604 theybpracticalkt giving them away toward the end of its lifecycle. Mains woke up to better choices and realised they could afford better things. This is not arrogance, it's just evolution. Thankfully these Dark days of Proton are over 🙏🏽
@@cedrice8604 wow! Yeah my neighbor had one too. She got hers for 26k at the end of 2006.
Proton saga LMST interior design got to much influence by lotus elise at that time ..which is really not good because saga is a family sedan/daily car & lotus elise is pure hardcore sporty car
Let's hope this atrocity NEVER happens ever again 🙏🏽
(Edit) PS: The idea to infuse Lotus DNA into Proton cars was a good idea, insofar as ride and handling was concerned. But u can't infuse interior dynamics from an Elise into a family car, it just doesn't work that way.
True bro... It was good to drive la.. But I can't look beyond the cheapiness
finally someone has spoken out about this car. very bad build quality . Its just horrible even if we compare to old iswara which is come out on early 90's ..
Correct. The earlier Sagas were much better than this...
My father bought one new back in 06 and even I can tell he regretted buying it. Exterior panel so thin even accidentally leaning on it can cause dents, dashboard cracks easily, glovebox so small it’s practically useless, interior door handle broken so many times I’ve lost count, temperature gauge can’t decide whether the car is cold or overheating and etc. Even his 01 kancil is more reliable than this and the kancil have done over 230k mileage and the dashboard is still in one piece. Finally sold it back in 2018 and traded for a used Saga FLX manual
Good trade! Thanks for the ownership experience feedback bud, sorry for the crap ur dad went thru with this pile of rubbish. No one should have to go thru this with a new car. No new car should be made like this!
My wife got one... Cannot even sell it... Going to scrap it soon. I agree with yr rant. Every just fall apart from the dash to the ac controller to the power window. List goes on...
I'm sorry for your plight, nobody deserved to be saddled with a car like this 🙏🏽
Don't scrap it. I pay 500 😂
Yo Chris! I've been an LMST owner for a good 4 years. Love the car to death but I gotta admit what you said does makes sense hahahaha. I've never noticed the instrumentation panel looks like its supposed to be on a motorcycle! All this while its the only thing that I can take pride in as it kinda looks like a Lotus meter panel hahaha. I enjoyed the rant Chris. Welp, time to save up to buy myself a decent EK
Dude, thank you so much for looking at it so positively, that was inspiring man. Proton took design cues from a Lotus Elise, and I'm quite sure the design looked great on paper, BUT it was the execution and materials used that failed miserably imho, which came off looking very cheap. Well at least the Mitsu powertrain was a peach, still is!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾😊
Hey Chris, nice and informative content! Didn't know that LSMTs interior were made these way. Back when I was in school and LMSTs were in production, it was like a dream for us school boys to own one. They came with some noisy muffler like sounding exhaust and cool looking blue backlit speedometer much like Satria Neo. Once, my friend rammed his Persona Elegance into a LMST's rear as he was too close and could not apply brake on time guess what, his Persona was quite badly damaged. Apparenty, the LMST's rear bumper only suffered minor scratches and bumper clip snapped but no severe damage. Back then we felt like despite cheaply built the car exterior had certain rigidity.
Thanks for the feedback bud, much appreciated. Btw, in a fender-bender the car at the back will always come-off worse for wear, due to crumple zones and more expensive components up front than the rear. The LMST had a very boomy exhaust fitted stock, that's why ppl nicknamed it Keta Kebal I reckon, cos it was that loud...
Some how, they dare to sell Saga more than 20 years in our market. This is the reason why people hate Proton because of quality and perception. Some more Proton dare to say we didn't support our own national car la.That why we rather spent our own money to buy foreign car because of build quality and good perception from foreign brand.
EXACTLY. Spot on right. This car was an INSULT to us.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Some more dare to say back then we don't want to spend RM 80,000 for a Proton. Well the reason why we don't want to spend RM 80K for Proton because at the same amount of money why not we upgrade ourself to a foreign car with better brand perception and build quality. Most of Malaysian who spend that kind of money obviously want something better than Proton. So basically, Proton shouldn't blame Malaysian why we are a little bit sceptical to spend 80K for a Proton because they used to make this kind of rubbish car so it is consider now worth it at all.
@@zulfadhlizainol6678 correct. The biggest wake-up call they had was when Honda & Toyota launched the City & Vios respectively. Sales of Proton dropped substantially overnight! The game was up, consumers wanted better, they deserved better.
@@zulfadhlizainol6678 spot on....
@@zulfadhlizainol6678 Not even perception, Hondas and Toyotas are renowned world over for their quality and reliability in the mainstream/compact category. If you are sinking RM80k into a car, it damn well better be a Honda/Toyota not Proton/Perodua (price not even a trivial figure when converted here to Aus dollars). In the era of the LMST, hell even the Iswara, they were essentially selling a 1980s car to 2000s customers which is simply unacceptable. In a free market, one without high protectionist tariffs, nobody would’ve bought those crappy cars, so I agree with you that Proton cannot hide behind the “unpatriotic” as really they are thinking Malaysians are stupid enough to believe that they put a world class product out (nobody fell for that).
I agree that Malaysian cars have come along way, noted when I visited Malaysia a while back and rented a Bezza. That said there are still things to improve on, the small capacity engines still can feel underpowered, the doors still feel a bit flimsy and the local cars haven’t reached international standards where ESC is a non-negotiable mandatory feature and standard side and curtain airbags have been the norm for over a decade, especially given the road toll and heavy rain in Malaysia - Malaysians deserve safer vehicles!
Again the Msian Govt wants revenue and isn’t gonna scrap the lucrative tariff program but if anyone wanted to test if Proton/Perodua were good cars, all that has to be done is to sell imported cars at the price they should be selling at, rather than an over inflated one. I reckon people will go for the step up in quality and Proton would have to be more competitive to compete, or at least remain to serve the baseline Saga/Bezza market. That’s what happened here in Australia with GM Holden, when they thought they could pull the wool over Australian’s eyes by importing cheaply built rebadged Daewoos, the markets flocked to Toyota/Mazda (Mazda is the runner up Japanese car brand here, while I take it that it’s still Honda in Msia) and the brand has been in decline for a decade and General Motors exited the country last year.
I wish Proton keeps making their own cars and not rebadging. Their rebadge jobs are my least favourite (like the 2008 Accord called Perdana) while I appreciate the style of the Waja, Persona, Preve, Iriz, new Saga, etc.
even Trabant does not deserve this monstrosity. Trabant was actually a bit ahead in its time, the cotton fiber composite shell was astonishingly durable.
Yeah, absolutely. I was gonna say Lada, but I actually like the Niva 4x4, haha!!🙏🏽😄
actually I agree that this is the worst one. so ugly, so cheap, using a 75 year old platform... and adding nee wheels and barely redesigning the bumpers with CHEAPER materials than before? so hard to forgive.
edit after watching: those aircon switches are worse than I thought
Must have looked good on paper, terrible execution. It was just one of many during this time... a lot of consumer faith was lost during this time.
I'm using LMST. I have no complaint about its engine and gearbox and its absolutely amazing if we do preventive maintenance. My father brought in 2005 and I'm keeping her due to sentimental value. Of course the dashboard never been quiet. Always rattle. Superb engine 4g13.
As I said, the powertrain is this cars only saving grace, and that's only thanks to Mitsubishi 🙏🏽👍🏾

ah the Saga LMST, when you can hear the trim rattle from the outside km away. It make Lada Niva feel like a Rolls-Royce in terms of build quality.
Hahaha!! Nicely put! Utter crap la this car, shiversomely bad. I like the comparison!😂
true definition of a tin milo, the launch of the LMST really brought car standards in MY down the drain
Absolute crap. Horribly made car 😔
That's exactly what my mom called the Saga LMST🤣 "TIN MILO"

Ahh... the dark days of Proton. Afterall, we choose to forgive but not to forget and that's how we evolve. Hopefully Proton will continue to progress further and learn from their mistakes.
Spot on. And may we as consumers NEVER have to deal with this ever again 🙏🏽
The project leader in Proton, who came up with this pile of crap LMST...needs to be thrown down the drain
I'd also save the drain for the person responsible for procuring the components and parts for this car, and the one who decided how much to spend buying them.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage yup agreed, to be honest, if they had kep the previous iswara shape, but added fuel injection ,abs, rear disc brakes, rear sway bar, and 15" alloys as a paid option, it would have been perfect....instead of this abomination
TBH, I actually hate the Saga LMST too, the thing I hate the most is the interior quality and the general design. It's really one of the worst Protons ever made. And the side mirror control is just ridiculously rubbish!
Yep, apart from the Mitsubishi powertrain, there's nothing, not a single thing good about this car.. except the aircon 🤦🏽♂️
@@ChrisWeevilGarage yes, the only good thing about this car is the air-conditioning,engine and smooth gearbox. My uncle owns this and I quite frequently ride in it, sometimes I gotta wear a jacket because the air-conditioning is soooo cold🥶
This car is just a 1980s chassis with early 2000s stock market crash interior trim.
Interesting way of describing it, lol!!👍🏾🤣
I have this car currently. Besides the robust and reliable 1.3 engine and manual transmission, the interior plastic is very very fragile and broken into pieces.
But, during its time, its the cheapest proton i can get. Promo merdeka RM26,999.
Yeah, it was very cheap toward the end of its lifecycle, u can thank Mitsubishi for the nice powertrain 😉
Tbh the LMST Iswara is just like a modernized VW Thing. The only difference is that the LMST has a roof and AC, but that's all.
As an LMST owner, and also the Iswara owner, u are absolutely right. The interior of LMST was horribly built. I love the Iswara interior much much more. The body was not tough at all.. Iswara can do better despite the "skin cancer" that most iswara caught. Close the door, and u'll hear a sound of tin kosong.
Thanks for the ownership feedback on BOTH cars bro, a good comparison indeed, much appreciated 🙏🏽
Yes, the Saga hatchback before this was miles better.
“Its soo cheaply made, it would cost 50 sens in Langkawi” 😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahahaha!!! Sorry2, couldn't resist 😅😅😅
This was around RM 25 k back when it was brand new. Alternative for that price was the Kancil which was 25k as well. I still would prefer this over the Kancil if I had choice. I know this because my mom bought a kancil over this saga. LOL
It trumps the Kancil only in terms of its size, very little else.
I owned this cheapskate (Proton's) car for 18 years. Handling and fuel consumption were pretty good but the AC (Patco) sucked. Brakes were scary, so I replaced the servo with one from a Pajero. Carried out scheduled maintenance on time and it never gave me any trouble at all. Drove it like a bat out of hell most of the time. It was a workhorse.
@@zenbandit19 this actual car is still running strong too!! The MMC powertrain is really the best thing about it tbh 😄
My first car. Got it for free from my neighbour!!! My mechanics themselves told me it's no point selling it as you'll get nothing out it. My mum still uses hers, but I switched to my current Kelisa, (LOL) No regrets. What you say about the powertrain, TRUE! It's soon to clock in to 300kms soon and the gearbox and engine are 100% in tip top condition. My mum's LMST's rear doors were sticky (still is) and the dash cracked when we first got it.
Thanks for the ownership experience feedback bud, much appreciated. Sigh, this car...such a travesty that it was even passed for sale to the general public.
there many a times of such cars in Proton history, wasting away tax payers monies

Meant no offense whatsover to owners, with this rant.
No worries Chris ...cheers
Trust me, in 5-7 years we would be calling the blm saga pure crap. Saga's weren't made properly and dare i say this, Perodua has pushed proton to even build their basic A segment cars properly. But currently with geely, imo, proton > perodua. opinions may vary tho👀
Currently the cars from Proton are a WORLD apart from this rubbish. Others may disagree, but Geely is the best thing that ever happened to Proton, insofar as consumers are concerned.
I kinda felt that with the BLM/FLX at this point after being in a few more of the recent entry level cars. The Bezza and Myvi included, and also others like the Iriz and Vios.
The BLM/FLX in comparison now just felt mediocre.
Probably not nearly as bad as the LMST though. It's just the overall build quality is not terrible, but not amazing. The same could be said with Peroduas of the time. I think it's after the early 2010's where both were begining to step up in terms of interior build quality.
Random thought : if I had only a choice of either a 2020 MacBook Pro or this car for the same price, I'd take the MacBook Pro and rather just walk/public transport than driving this car haha
Hahahaha!! Thanks for sharing that, lol!!😂😂😂
As a owner of the LMST, TOTALY AGREED with every points stated in the video. The noices are constantly coming out from the dahsboards, the air conditioner control dash in mine is total long long time ago, SHitest power window button position. Not to mentioned the feeling of insecure when driving in fast speed, it just feel like the car would gone to pices in any second!! Aside from the cheap quality of body and interior, the powertrain are suprisingly satisfied my daily drive needs. Good throttle response, Good transmission feedback. Anyway, i would still recommend who those doesn't have much in their pocket to use this car as the leverage before they could affort a better car, especially a fresh graduate like myself.
P.S: Thx to Mitsubishi and the lightweight, LMST is very fun to drive and fast (If you can conquer the fact that it might just gone "transformer" when crusing on about 160km/s)
Cheers bud, thanks for your feedback! Yes, I still stand by what I said in this video, this is one of the worst cars Proton ever made, and I really feel sorry for buyers of this pos 🙏🏽😑
PS: Yes the powertrain on this car is it's ONLY redeeming quality, he great thanks to Mitsubishi 👍🏾
and to top it off, it was also sold with a ridiculous orange colour option.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My dad told me last time he bought a 1.8 Wira and only a few months got gear box problem needed to replace 2 times and ended up selling it for a lost. This was before i was born. That's how my dad lost trust with Proton I think it was proton dark days compared to now. I think the trust is going back up for proton in Malaysia because of the X70 and X50.
Definitely getting better now, tbh, even before Geely came into the picture, the cars were getting better already. They're MUCH better now 🙏🏽👍🏾
All the dislikes comes from Proton design team
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 thanks for the laugh 🙏🏽😁👍🏾
kereta belum sampai, suara dah sampai! Thats the golden tag to this model that I could always remember. This car is noisy, internally and externally. It also reminded me of others failed models from Proton such as Tiara, Juara and Savvy.
Yep, that boomy exhaust was fitted stock for added "sportiness". That's like putting racing livery on a rubbish bin imho.
Hi Chris, just thought to ask what's your opinion on saga iswara?
I owned one, I bought it after selling my Saga Megavalve 1.3, to be very honest, I felt the Megavalve was better built. The Iswara already had a lot of local-content by that time, and some of it wasn't of very good quality.
True.. luckily i chose to buy waja MANUAL Rather than lmst..
Damn good choice. Not just cos I have a Waja too.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage yeah both my brother in law..own lmst each.. true it does great powertrain it drives good.maybe part of em buying lmst back then coz the exhaust comes stock with .vrooomm sounded muffler....but the interior is all shyt...
@@funeralsforafriends yup, that boomy exhaust fitted stock, I remember it well. They used that loud noise to camouflage the lack of NVH...
The interior material feels like made out of plastic bucket, even worser than soft material found in original Saga and Iswara 😂
Exactly. It feels so cheap to the touch, like tapping on a PET bottle 🤦🏽♂️
Back then this car was priced nearly 50k if I'm not mistaken. Yes, it was built for an affordable price but for a car that was lazily designed and made from cheap materials, it should've cost 20k. I hate the design and it was priced expensively back then.
Sigh, ppl actually spent their hard earned cash on this...that's what pisses me off the most!
@@ChrisWeevilGarage well, saga was the only brand new saloon car back then and the other alternative was a kancil or viva which is not a saloon. My father did thought of buying this saga but he got himself a gen-2 instead. Brand new cars are expensive during those eras. A government servant can't afford to buy a honda like today.
@@KCHRider But then the Honda City & Toyota Vios arrived almost simultaneously and Proton sales took a nosedive overnight, that should have been a huge wake-up call for them...
That's the best new car below rm30k back then. Between this and a kancil 660, saga lmst definitely a better buy. Even if you pull in the Saga BLM base specs, this LMST is gives you better bang of bucks.
I wouldn't say best, I'd rather say no choice, which is also a damn shame. But choices came aplenty after this, and it was suddenly a brave new world, but for a while, Proton failed to realise this, hence the Dark Ages. I know the back story of this car, and it's not a good story, at all.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Haha, yup, really lack of choices back then. I bought the final batch of lmst back in 2008. Tested the kosong specs of saga BLM (32k otr) and ordered the LMST (rm28k otr). Kancil 660 is about 26k otr.
Even a 4yrs old 1.0 Kelisa is asking for 30k.
LMST is really a better buy among these cars.
Other than the terrible interior, where you would often find extra screws on the floor 😅, the drive train is proven to run reliably for decades.
@@dg-_-my and that's only thanks to the Mitsubishi powertrain as mentioned. What should have been the biggest wake up call for Proton was the advent of the (then) new City & Vios. @@ChrisWeevilGarage yeah, they knew many Malaysian can't afford Japanese cars, they keep shovel the substandard products to us. Myvi are god sent to many, but unfortunately not every fresh grads could afford 40k+ car.

@@dg-_-my yes. I can't bring myself to even look at a G2 without feeling hatred. It's best forgotten. Filed away in a cabinet marked "never to do again".
Just sold this car last week for a brand new Saga. No doubt the gearbox and engine is the best. Other than that, it's bad. Rattling dashboard, cracked meter panel, faulty fuel gauge (Constantly showing full tank and suddenly drops to 1 bar when empty), lousy power window switch, super low suspension (scratches undercarriage in road bumps, 0 NVH, and super cramp rear passanger seats (with my driving position my passengers would need to chop off their thighs and legs). Amidst all of the negative things, the only thing I appreciate and will miss is the exhaust note and the smooth gear shifting. *2006 Saga LMST ex-owner*
Just get an S Flow muffler into ur new Saga and enjoy a much better put-together car bud. The new Saga ain't perfect (no car is btw), but it's 100% better than this LMST. All the best with your new car 🙏🏽😊
My late grandfather bought it brand new in 2006 and we still got it until now. You were right though, the engines, mechanicals were very good. The car got 200k++KM on it and it still drives good. Fuel consumption pon ok la, full tank can last a week or so and the spare parts are very cheap.
Nice!! Please keep it running well, it has a very nice powertrain 🙏🏽😊
Will do Sir!👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I just bought this car WPE plate (2006?) at RM1K for kebun usage.
The engine and gearbox is perfect.
Interior perfect except for 1 broken door opener.
Dashboard vibrating like hell when aircond is switched on.
But hey, its 1K! Still a win in my book. 🤣
You had me at Stephen Hawking 🤣🤣🤣
Love that guy, pure genius, may be rest in peace 🙏🏽
And the fact that this is suppose to be Saga (and remove the Iswara name) and it last 5 model years surprises me. It makes the Saga BLM looks like a Corolla. But for a car with no airbag and selling it for RM30k-50k really hits the nail in the coffin on why Proton had a bad reputation, while Myvi sells like hotcakes. The LMST looks like it doesn't deserve to have both Proton and Saga badge. At the very least for 80s based car in 2000s, it should have some decent features and standards in quality at the price of entry-level car.
It also reminds me of Chery Alado Amulet/A13, which i saw a number of it in Langkawi in 2007. Both 80s with 2000s cosmetics.
Being born in 2000, i've never thought of Proton sedan that i like, other than Waja, until 2007 and 2008 with Persona and Saga BLM respectively. This along with hatchbacks Savvy and Satria Neo in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
Glad that at the same price in 2020, the current Saga is as good as a decent entry level sedan. I feel pity that Proton made this and named it Saga. Might as well chosed used Waja, Wira or even pre-LMST Saga/Iswara instead.
Yup, u nailed it. The current Saga is a MUCH improved car 👍🏾😊
I can hear an ex premier giggling like a little girl if he watched this hahaha
Hahahahahaha!! I hope not man 🤭🙏🏽
My dad bought this car brand new for RM38K when brand new in 2005. He bought it cause our Lancer boxtype was constantly breaking down. I'm using it now. Its painful, but I agree with u, Chris. My dash has 3 cracks. But I love it. Hahaha. Good review!
Thanks for the feedback bud, ouch 38k is no joke, even by today's standards 😕
@@ChrisWeevilGarage yup. But cars then were way pricier compared to now. But I'm currently restoring it.
2 of my colleagues had LMSTs since new, and to be frank they bought it because they've needed the space but had a limited budget. I remember sitting in 1 when it was barely a week old to lunch and immediately felt another colleague's (mechanically twin) 97 Iswara 1.3 Aeroback a class better in terms of fit and finish (that rear boot spoiler had gaps as wide as 1 thumb), materials (interior plastic panel quality was too thin, easily scratched and really hollow), NVH (that fartbox exhaust was louder than predecessor 'Brother's' LMSS). My other colleague's car was traded in last year for a new Persona and by then the dashboard had cracked, the door cards rubbery finish had turned sticky and discoloured, and before selling it off kept reminding us not to wind down the rear windows coz the plastic winder would snap very easily.
Really the older LMSS was much better, and those that gave it the final approval should have been hanged.
Thanks for the feedback bud, yep, there was SO much wrong with this car I'm amazed it was ever passed for sale to the public. That's what pisses me off the most I reckon, that ppl paid good money for this crap. It was too expensive when new (for what buyers were getting) and it's worthless now.
In every video you almost give positives about cars. But once i saw this video i liked your channel more and i trust your view more on cars. Thank you sir for being honest.
Thank you for watching and the comment too, glad u enjoyed it bud. Actually I do give negatives when it's deemed necessary, if it's good I'll say it's good, and it's the same if there's bad as well 😊🙏🏽👍🏾
Dude, that point of time by right the C22 chassis is supposed to end of it's service life. The LMSS was supposed to be the final variant of it's kind, but somehow the replacement model (BLM - Base Line Model) doesn't come. Which resulted in this LOTUS touched up of LMST until the all new Saga II(BLM) came and replace it. Some of the noticeable touch up by lotus was the plastic dashboard that you hated the most, and the hard poly door trim that totally LOTUS are there to make sure it has as little component as possible for the car to be break. Not dissing you, I agree 101% on your point of view, they technically haven't thought of what makes a car a car, but somehow they race cared a budget car(a race car literally doesn't have all the normal saloon comfort anyway). But if you really want to dive into the C21 C22 world, the most updated version of it's kind is the LMSS with all the noticeable internal upgrades and maintain all the required car stuff in the cabin. However, the best performance edition of "Iswara aeroback" which will be the SAGA II LMST - Merdeka edition(rusty orange), due to it's exhaust tuning and carburetor touch up, marked 92bhp on paper. It wasn't so bad after all, considering one of the last LMST in 2008(old stock) were selling at 22k. It's a steal bro. A bread toaster with 4 wheels!
Thanks for that walk down memory lane bud, nice one. Yes, I know and hear where you're coming from with the Lotus DNA bits, which is fine, but, and this is a big BUT, it didn't work for this car at all. Firstly and most obviously it's not an Elise, secondly the target market are not Lotus buyers. They needed a daily runabout and likely for their families too. On the flipside, it wasn't sporty enough for the younger generation, despite the boomy exhaust fitted stock. It was neither here nor there, and while it may have looked good on paper, the execution was horrendous. It was horrendous when new, it's even more horrendous now. 22k? I wouldn't have paid half that.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Calm down buddy. kekekeke. That point of time, it's even cheaper than a Kancil. I bought one second hand at 7k some years ago.
@@bobdavids1691 I'm calm. There are ways of making a cheap car not look and feel cheap, many have done it before. None of that was done here. If u know the back story of this car you'd be livid too. Maybe the one good thing this car did was to make owners vow to work harder to afford something better.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Hi Chris, I'm very curious about the back story of this model as you have mentioned it many times. Care to share?
@@cedrice8604 can't go into specifics but let's just say that during the Dark Ages, very little care and consideration was given to producing proper cars.
Kinda agree with you about this car. My aunty used to own one back when this car new, just love the engine and the S-Flow exhaust (factory fitted) but that time i still budak kecil. So don't really know how bad its quality is.
This car is a fine example of how NOT to build a car, much less sell it for money.
The montrosity of the LMST can also be seen in the Gen 2. Supposedly a family-friendly hatchback, but not really that practical. The Gen 2 doesn't even have a glovebox either, which makes me feel that these two models must've been designed by a same person. The meter cluster of both models also look very Lotus-ish. Same with the interior panels, e.g. door cards, which are very brittle and prone to crack after several years of usage. Luckily they fixed the issues of the Gen 2 when they launched the first generation Persona.
Yes, the G2 was not much better than this in terms of build quality and interior component materials used. Imho, having Lotus DNA would only work to a point, fashioning an interior of a "family car" from that of an Elise for example, was a contradiction in terms, they're polar opposites insofar as car models are concerned. Whoever thought that this would work had a good idea but in the wrong type of car.
@@duanetersan1975 yeah, Porsche styled front seats, cool. Again, all of it must have looked very good on paper, but the execution was crap!
The plastic headlamp lenses and bumper are more for the pedestrian crash safety though, not for cost cutting. But it works in line with their cost cutting for this car.
I love your videos but the constant Evo ads in your videos kinda irks me though. Just my 2 cents. I will just skip appropriately.

How about Proton Iswara? Same engine & gearbox but interior from Saga petak era's. Does it worth for standard restoration project?
Any car is worth restoring, it's all up to the owner/buyer, I've known ppl who've spent thousands on a Nissan Sunny, and why not, if it appeals to you, go for it and let no one tell you otherwise 👍🏾😊
@@ChrisWeevilGarage well I kinda own it now since my mother doesn't drive it anymore, & the car itself have good old memories with it. My objective with restoration of the car to make it as stock as possible to longer it drivability & usability but with some latest modern tech like bluetooth connectivity, sound proofing & etc. Plus don't want to make the car a liability to my life, somehow need to think how to convert it usage as an asset. @@cedrice8604 trends come and go hahhahaa 😅😅 like 70s hairstyles
@@ChrisWeevilGarage also Chris. I also noticed during that era in the early to mid 2000s Proton pricings were really weird. For example my mother bought a Proton Wira Auto which was spec out with back beepers and also a electric retractable back window sun visor (honestly i must say proton was the only car ive found in my life that has this feature) and it came out to about 42 - 43k in 1999 - 2000s money. For a national build car which is basically a rebadged Lancer/Mirage it was suprisingly expensive. And then alongside this you have this bad taste saga ripoff which honestly wasn't going much cheaper. It seemed to me that at this point in time it was hard for anyone to support our local cars and even if we did . We flock to perodua. Anyways not cussing proton because my moms wira served us with no issue and drove like a dream . But just an observation i noticed
@@postmanpat3265 good observation! Yup, I had two Wiras, a hatchback and sedan, they were good cars thanks to Mitsubishi, and they had much better interiors than this LMST, but that's not because they were a lot more expensive, since the LMSS before this also had a very decent interior for its price. No, this LMST was a mistake, an utter disgrace that should never have been foisted on the public. Even a rm19k Nissan Sunny 1.3 was much better when new.
I had this car, the exterior looked good for me in the 2000s used it for 12 years...the dashboard was a different story...it was not at all comfortable compared to the Saga & the Saga Iswaras.
Yeah, this one was a travesty of errors and mismanagement 🤦🏽♂️
This is why i bought the Iswara limited edition as my 1st car rather than the LMST. The LMST interior is soooo... yeah u already know la.
Good choice!! Well done 👍🏾😊
Honestly, I've always wanted to buy a rough one of these and just subject it to various forms of destruction just to rid the Malaysian roads of one of these absolute shitboxes.

At first i thought the whole car might've been an advancement too...who knows the door latching noise is even worse than my 2001 Iswara Sedan🤣
@@sequentialtt0415 just like the Gen.2, I bet the design looked really good on paper, but the final execution was left to the bean-counters and they REALLY cut corners with this car...
I don't mind cheap plastics, to me it's superficial. What really ticks me off is some carmakers put up a good quality facade, but beneath that it's all cheaply engineered and poor manufacturing. Bad welding quality, sharp edges to the extend that there is thorn around the panel/subframe, seized engine within the first week of ownership... Too much to list here🤣🤣
I guess we see cars from a different perspective.
That's fine, to see things from a different perspective, I'm not looking for agreement, support or absolution to what I've said. Never have, never will. I call it as I see it.

Cmon Chris (thanks for the good laugh, I've been waiting for you to have a go at this car) .... I have this thing for 15 years .... Just sold it today though ... Finally. There's only 2 thing I reaaaallllllly hate about the car, it's the dash board & the side mirror. It's the worst I have ever had & its really bad. Since I'm just starting off then, I suck it up & just get it for the price.
Congrays bud, glad u managed to sell it 🙏🏽😁
The owner of this one can't be bothered to do it up anymore, it's not worth the time, effort or expenditure. He's gonna drive it into the ground. Zero redeeming qualities, zero sentimental value. It might as well just be a wheelbarrow with an engine.
My wife have the special edition silver colored model but with very different interior than this one.. It came with the similar factory sports exhaust... I then bought her a Honda City but she insisted to keep her saga cos she loved it so much... We still drives it around on the weekends.. i too love to drive it cos it's still runs smooth.. it's a great no frills no fucks given fun car...
That was probably the LMSS before this, much better indeed!! Good choice 🙏🏽😊
Once I have ride it while I'm in secondary school. Doesn't know that it was not that well build. From my memories it exhaust sounds great while I ride it when my friends father hitch us from boarding school in Perak to Kuala Lumpur, and the dashboard is really simple as it reminds us the lotus car dashboard. Overall it does it job back then. Hope Proton may improve again and again for future models as they are doing great now.
Tq for that car memory bro, yeah, as I said, powertrain wise it's very good, but the rest of it left a LOT to be desired. Imho, infusing Lotus DNA is fine in certain aspects, but not when it's gonna be executed so badly.
We know the material qualities is horrendous. Yet personally it’s the most ‘sexiest’ boxy design by proton. One day it will be a sort-out.😛
Indeed, one day it shall. If it survives long enough, haha!!😄
I totally agree with you, Chris. My father bought this car in Dec 2003, the car still with us now. Back then, I like the looks of the car and the power when driving it. But sadly, after 10 years the interior trim starts to fall apart, the paint went faded, the overall condition of the car really horrible. IMO, even a 2000 Wira build better, lasts better than this holly LMST 🤮. Think of rebuilding it but feel like is a waste of money. Sigh
Sigh, thanks for the ownership experience feedback bud, sorry it's so bad. The owner of this car can't be bothered to do it up, as long as it runs, that's fine. He's gonna drive it into the ground cos it's not worth it to do up.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage Yup, you're right. Just keep it as a spare car! Haha. Let's hope the dark ages of Proton will not happen again
Only one thing you need to know about the LMST Chris, will tell you honesty, this was the 'Cut Cost' car bro... You can compare also the iswara with this LMST... Totally different... Iswara more solid than LMST... And you know what the other problem for this model? The dashboard trim on the windscreen, majority i saw it was crack... Even you see as well the front headlight and rear light too plastic and not so quality, even you bought brand new,the headlamp will turn to yellowish too fast only in a 1-2 years.... Before this my grandmother also bought this brand new back in 2007 the sunset orage color one.... And yeah Fuel Consumption are different from the iswara, the LMST so thirsty for the petrol... Before i bought my iswara aeroback, this was on the list as the 'final choice' for me if i couldn't find the iswara aeroback.... Seriously this car has a lot different quality from the previous iswara even saga as well...

I used to drive this Saga 'kereta kebal' for my daily transport, with distance travelled more 100km per day .Engine and transmission, never caused major problem at all. Sadly other parts not qualified as kereta kebal.
Absolutely right, very good powertrain indeed 👍🏾😊
I own a LMST :(. BTW the meter is Lotus`s fault, LMST Lotus Meter Sport Trim hehe. The temperature gauge goes bad quite often. But I`m also questioning your judgment on the LMST, since you like the Savvy.
The Savvy is a hot-hatch, whatever Lotus DNA went in would work, it doesn't work for a family car like this. And I already did mention the Savvy also has a very plasticky interior too, but it's nowhere near as badly put together as is. At least the Savvy is TUV certified, this LMST has no redeeming qualities at all, save for the powertrain.
@@ChrisWeevilGarage I do agree with you, on the cheapness of the interior. I've been with the LMST for 10 years and stuffs breaking that wouldn't in an Iswara or Mahathir era Saga. I understand your hate with the LMST, that's how I feel about the Savvy. Also, I kinda dislike what proton is doing now, the body to wheel size ratio is an eye sore. The wheels are too small. Besides that, how about you get an LMST and see if it can change your mind (for youtube of course). I mean, get something you hate for a change. 😈😈
Aiyoyo!! You’re really angry bro..my workshop used this car as a replacement for customer to bring back home while their car is being repaired.. I pernah drive this car..& I agreed with you about the gearbox..smooth shifting..& the engine..that’s the only good thing about it 🤣🤣

@@ChrisWeevilGarage what about saga LMSS? Is it same crap or same like iswara? It's quite rare to see LMSS rather than this LMST
@@myrulsufi actually I mentioned the LMSS in my description, imho it was better than this thing...
oh yea, this car it is piece of shit. no offence guys. i think back the old days older iswara/saga aeroback look way so much better than this one
Totally agreed. The earlier Sagas were so much better than this pile of crap....
I can't agree more that this cars interior is awful. They should have just left the original Iswara interior alone. However on the subject of build and material quality, I think it should be tied into how much a car costs. For example, the Axia interior is nice for a 30-40k car, but it would be disappointing in a 100k B segment sedan. A current example of this would be the Honda CRV. It's a nice design but the quality does not fit the asking price. A lot of the interior bits are great for a 95k City but not in a 160k car. I once saw a showroom car where the leather was more deformed from being sat on than my ancient 2003 E39 with 305k km on the clock. And I'm quite heavy. And before all the Honda fans lynch me, I'm not singling this car out. I'm just using it as an example. There are many more disappointments out there...
Yes of course the more expensive the car, the better its interior, that's a given, but there are ways to make the interior of a cheap car not look and feel cheap like this. Take the Nissan Sunny for example, rm19k when brand new, but its interior didn't look or feel cheap, at all. And that same interior has survived decades.
