AudioVisual demonstration of Detroit Diesel 8V71 firing order (two stroke "supercharged" diesel V8)

- Опубликовано: 5 янв 2020
- This video demonstrates the firing order of the 8V71 Detroit Diesel, which is a crossplane two stroke diesel V8 with a bank angle of 60 degrees.
Firing order is 1L 3R 3L 4R 4L 2L 2R 1R
Due to the 90 degree crank interval and 60 degree bank angle the interval between successive cylinders firing alternates between 30 and 60 degrees.
1L fires at 0 degrees, 3R at 30 degrees, 3L at 90 degrees, 4R at 120 degrees, 4L at 180 degrees, 2R at 210 degrees, 2L at 270 degrees and 1R fires at 300 degrees (Thanks for the pickup CIPHER :) ).
There are lots of engines I want and this is one of them, the noise they make in person is pretty unique. Авто/Мото
I listened to this with earbuds. I can hear colors now.
haha thanks!
That's the crazy thing about two-stroke motors, since they fire every time they reach the top of the stroke they sound like they're doing double the RPM of a standard four-stroke even when they're not. I'm honestly glad he didn't take it all the way up to 10,000 RPM though I don't need my dogs freaking out lol
didn't understand what this comment meant until the engine reached 3k rpm

I had to deliver an M978 about 250 miles once while I was in the army. it was the old 4 speed type so going anything faster than 55 was quite taxing on the engine. sarge riding shotgun was like fuck it were in a hurry and we were because we had a helicopter to catch. I put the foot down and for about 4 hours straight, had that 8v71 singing about 2500+ rpm. dashboard indicated redline was 2000 rpm. didn't skip a beat
@@FordGTmaniac That was more like 3600 RPM.
Wow, and it really does sound like the real thing!
It doesn't sound as cool as the real thing and the smell isn't right, but the beat is there.
William Moser That’s quite okay! As a mechanical engineering major, this kinda stuff intrigues me! A four stroke engines fundamental frequency will always be F=(NxRPM)/(120), where N is the number of cylinders and RPM is the engine speed. For a two stroke, the 120 turns into 60, because a power stroke happens every revolution of the crankshaft, whereas in a 4 stroke, it’s every two revolutions. Your audiovisual demonstrations, however, not only has the fundamental frequency, but also takes into account the different engine sounds due to firing order!
I did a bit of noise analysis ages ago using a big dollar B&K 1/3 octave spectrum analyser, it was interesting to see 10 X RPM harmonics due to the electric motor having 10 poles, funny that now a phone app will do similar things for much cheaper.
William Moser There is an electric motor? I though they were just speakers?
this video uses two speakers, no motors - I may have tangent-ed too much, the noise analysis had nothing to do with these videos, just slightly related to the frequency stuff.

0:10 exactly what an 8V71 sounds like at idle!! Interesting fact for those Detroit engines. The first number is the number of cylinders that engine has the second is how many cubic inches each cylinder displaces. Although it just occurred to me if you’re watching this video you probably already know that.
and the V means it's a V engine, if the code doesn't have a V in it it's an inline.
And the 567 engine, used in trains, generators, and ships, is exactly twice the bore and stroke of a 71 series (a good giveaway is that 567 is awfully close to 568, which is 8 times 71).

I’d like to see how a rotary engine would work with this

it would just be 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2

Very unusual firing order for a crossplane v8. It's firing order is very similar to a Flatplane firing order. (1-6-3-5-4-7-2-8)
The unusualness comes from the 60 degree bank angle and two stroke cycle, took me a while to work out how these engines didn't fire two cylinders at a time (when I thought they had a 90 degree bank angle) and a while longer to work out how to simulate it.
I ran a old slave tamper a few years ago with the same engine. Was straight piped. Could hear it rolling down the tracks a few km away!

Hey Do you have a rotary single , two, three, four, six. Rotor video coming up.
It's because it's a two stroke, I didn't know what was going on the first time I heard one on a highway. Might do rotaries some day if I can work out a good way to represent them. and what magic makes them go.

Honda actually makes diesel engines, who would have thought?
technially as far as im aware the reason why its supercharged is not to necessarily provide boost but to actually the engine work because its 2 stroke
That's right, they can't build boost, it's impossible, which is why they call it a "blower" not a "supercharger", and they don't run worth a crap without one. When the piston is at BDC, it opens ports in the cylinder to let the new air charge in while the exhaust valves in the head are open. The blower literally blows through the cylinder to blow the exhaust gas out and blow fresh air in. Since it's a "blow through" design in that way, there is no way to build boost, as opposed to a 4 stroke engine, in which a supercharger or turbocharger will blow the air against closed exhaust valves, creating pressure.

I didn’t realize how low this engine revved
Tachometers for these engines rarely show more than 2500 rpm, and they sound like they're going to explode at 2,000.
Typically in trucks most Diesel engines rev no higher than 2100rpm. In marine applications the same engines are often revved quite a lot higher and make more power regardless of whether they're two stroke or four stroke.
For example some Detroit Diesel two strokes - say an 8V92T in marine use, output 600hp and do 2500rpm.
I've even seen listings on the internet for marine inline 6-71 turbo engines with 550hp. Stock, turbo 6V71 or inline 6-71 never put out anything like that in trucks let me tell you.
In truck use, AFAIK there was no turbo 8V92 with a stock rating higher than 475hp but of course people opened them up to make more.
You Could a 5.7 Voodoo V8 with a 2.8 V6 Ecoboost engine swap!!!!!! 20000HP Launch control,Idle and Driving!!!!!!

Btw, i have to do a V8 to V4 with a 8v92 detroit .. For taxes reason... Is one of you did this ?
Haven't heard of that before, how were the other cylinders blanked off? Thanks for watching!
Hi@@WilliamMoser,
Thx for your answer. I'm seaching somebody who already did this downsizing conversion.
I think it's possible to blank off one bank on this detroit v8, for sample. Because this two stroke engines have a different firing order than classic 4 stroke v8. So, each side of the detroit is doing like a simple 4cylinder firing order (1342).
On a classic v8 (4stroke) to do a downsizing it must be done two cylinder on each bank, cyl n°3/5 and 2/8, to have a correct balance (like old Cadillac V8/6/4).
Looks like simple to do, but.... 🤔🤨 Not really sure of the result....
Here in Europe taxes for big engines are ENORMOUS !!! and my only solution will be to do it. Hope to find somebody crazy like me who can give some more infos... 😉
👍Thanks a lot, and habe a great day 😊.
Bruno. 🇫🇷
@@brunogrpr5259 the 8v71 has a crossplane crank so treating it like a V8 with displacement on demand would be the way to go. You would want to make sure you can reclassify it too, could be less trouble to replace it with a 4-71 or whatever Cummins is the go.
Ok i understand, and in this case it should be possible to disconnect 2 cylinders each side like a for stroke ? Do you have an idea wich one need to be disconnected to get the best balancing in V4 ? 🤔
My guess would be the inside cylinders (2L, 2R, 3L, 3R) as the counterweights are smallest there and you wouldn't want to remove one connecting rod from a shared crankpin. You would need to block the inlet ports and remove the exhaust valve and injector rockers too. You would also need to underdrive the blower, which might be tricky, or fit a smaller one, which might be tricky and expensive.
Jesus Christ, it’s terrifying seeing a Diesel engine go above 2000 rpm.

Yes but they're not supercharged. The Roots type blower is used to aspirate the engine. Even Detroit Diesel call their blower only engines as N for Natural and I guarantee you don' know more about Detroit Diesel Uniflow engines than Detroit Diesel. The turbocharged variants are forced induction but still retain the blower, because without the blower it wouldn't start of idle or accelerate before the turbo starts producing boost.
Supercharged involves air supply greater than naturally aspirated air demand.
