Ringing of the exceptional Monticelli bells that escaped the war

- On the death of the Marquis, the fiefdom of Monticelli (Piacenza) passed to his son Charles, Bishop of Lodi, who obtained permission from Pope Paul II, who was his friend, to build a new collegiate church. The magnificent Gothic church was built between 1471 and 1480 as an imperial abbey, immediately provided with a very rich dowry. The bell tower was raised in 1881 to its current style. The size of the new tower led to the casting of a new concert of eight bells, weighing almost 60 quintals in total. The new bells were inaugurated in 1888 and escaped requisition during the Second World War, as the church was elevated to basilica by Pius XII a few months before the decree was signed.

The eight bells are among the best cast in Italy and Europe; it is a concert that is not very well known, but which we have gladly captured in this video, where we also find the historic church, closed to the public after a disastrous earthquake. The church contains thousands of burials of noblemen, contained in rich tombs under the floor. Bells ring in celebration of Easter, while the plain is surrounded by dense fog and frozen weather.
The village of Monticelli is documented for the presence of an important castle as far back as 966. At that time, there were two very important churches, which were to become branches of the new church of Saint Lawrence in the second half of the 15th century. The collegiate church was consecrated in 1549 by the bishop of Alba, who retained the title of provost of Monticelli because the church was richer than his entire diocese. The privileges were removed in 1601, when the pope created a new diocese in the area. This building is the largest in the diocese and contains an incalculable number of works of art, starting with the magnificent sacred vestments from the 1500s and as many as 15 altars all rich in stucco and paintings.
