- This short clip is a glimpse of us mining Herkimer Diamonds at Crystal Grove Diamond Mine just outside of St Johnsville, NY.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar, Herkimer "Diamonds" are a form of clear quartz that sometimes develop double terminated crystals. Good specimens form loose in a vug, or pocket, without attaching to the dolomite that surrounds them, resulting in perfect 6-sided "football shaped" forms that are water clear.

I remember when i was 7 years old i accidentally drop a big rock and almost landed on my toe but luckily it didnt. It split open and the only thing i remember inside was like a shiny blue stone. But i had no idea it was i diamond. Now i just wish i could go through a time machine and keep it so we wouldnt be so broke

Cool find! I am a huge crystal addict and I find it funny that all these people are accusing you of saying that they are diamonds! They are not diamonds but he clearly wrote it with quotes. They are called herkimer diamonds but that's just the name. This guy is just using correct terms.

I have been there a few times, always find a couple but it can be some work. You can bring your own tools or rent some. There is two sides of the mine open to the public. It's kinda more like a quarry .
If you travel there from a distance and never been, don't forget to check out Howe's Caverns.

when I was a child before and go for gold mine. I was amazed to collect those quarts in diamond shape. because I thought its diamond and my aunt laugh at me.

Interesting! We also have quartz locally that doesn't look this nice (I live 400 miles from the mine), and people still collect it, and it's for sale at gem and mineral shops

You never know for certain. This mine has good sized pockets about every meter or meter and a half. So I try to move as much stone as possible to raise my chances in finding one.

They aren't worth a ton, but a particularly nice specimen can be worth several hundred dollars, easily.

I did actually see a video showing that. It was incredibly difficult and the resulting sword was very fragile. The guy had a hard time keeping the obsidian flowing if I remember correctly

Lovely! It is niceto see gems being mined without exploitation, and they are right here in our own backyard, so to speak. Prithee, why are they being farmed out to China for cutting and polishing? Is it because of cheap labour? Just curious. At any rate, I have purchased a complete set of Herkimer and it is the perfect jewellery to wear when I don't have to orry about being robbed. I love it! Keep up the good works Sir.

You're correct. "Herkimer Diamond" is a nickname for the crystals from this area of New York. They're unusually clear, and many have double terminations

These crystals are Quartz as it has hexagonal crystal system, and it is formed with the cavity filling mechanism, raw diamonds would not be so shiny and it has cubic crystal system, mainly it would be found with irregular shape and it will look like ice, and Diamonds would be found in only the Kimberlite (the host rock) or near it, which you have to search near volcano or the dark igneous rocks, down river and among the weathered materials, if you are looking for diamonds you have to head to a place which has history as diamonds been found there... however the purple quartz (Amethyst) is a nice stone valuable and some people believe it has healing properties to adjust the body electrical pulses and prevent the Epileptic seizures.

It's actually really hard to tell where a pocket is located, unless you're following a vein of some sort. Here I'm more looking for easy places to remove large amounts of stone quickly/easily to maximize my chance of finding one. So I'll typically work the existing cracks if possible.
