TOEFL SPEAKING question 1 (9 samples)

  • This video is proposing 9 practice tasks for the FIRST question in the speaking section of the TOEFL IBT. You will also find sample responses for each of the tasks. These were included with the original CD. If anything, these samples can teach you the format of a good response. But don't let yourself be discouraged by the quality of their language and content. You will only have 15 seconds to prepare and I'm sure these guys took hours to write those samples... So the judges don't expect this kind of quality. But what they do expect is the level of organization they display. So when preparing your response, make sure you respect the following pattern
    1: A Clear Topic Statement
    2: 2 reasons to hold your opinion
    3: Details and examples for each of your reasons.
    4: A concise concluding statement... (example: those are the reasons I believe... kind of thing)
    With that in mind, you should be able to get a good score for this question at least. That is if your grammar and vocabulary is good... of course.
    Here is the link to the PDF speaking scoring grid
    www.ets.org/Media/Tests/TOEFL/pdf/Speaking_Rubrics.pdf
    It will give you a good idea of what they use to grade you

    Being an American myself, I really feel sorry for y'all who take this BS. Funny fact is that many American college students cannot figure out what to say in ......only 15 seconds for preparing.(seriously? 15 seconds?) I mean it just like you go to street asking a random guy some random questions and then what do you expect? Good answers? Get over ETS!

      The point is that an average native speaker will still sound like a native speaker. You are graded according to how closely you can match that criteria. You're not expected to give a perfectly smooth and perfectly timed and organized response to every question; as long as you can do about as well as an average educated native speaker, you'll get a very high score.

    Question 1: What is the best class you have taken in school? Why was it the best in your opinion? Include details and examples to support your explanation
    Answer:
    The best class [I have taken] in school was my English class.
    The first reason is the teacher’s bright and positive personality. I remember this class the most because the teacher always smiled whenever she entered the classroom. She made everyone become enthusiastic about the class. Also, she never yelled or scolded the students, and always encouraged and comforted them.
    The second reason is the class atmosphere. Everyone in the class participated well by answering many questions, even though they were not fluent speakers of English. They even formed groups to study together and motivated one another. So I ended up getting A+.

    Thanks a lot for uploading these videos. I completely relied on your videos for my toefl ibt prep. Initially I thought the responses are well prepared and nobody can give such perfect responses. But slowly I realised, that these are for practice purposes and if we try to master our answers to this perfection , we can get good scores. The examples are excellent one to practice and we can note down the vocabulary used here and try to apply in different contexts. I scored 107 in toefl ibt.Thanks

  • @el7jake
    @el7jake 9 лет назад +11

    Okay, first of all, what's with the comments about the sample responses being too perfect? Even if they were, what's wrong with that? If you're only giving one sample answer per question, why wouldn't you want to give an answer that's going to get a high score as the standard to shoot for? And perfect? Not hardly! The woman talking about going to a pub with friends and talking about girls? Well, I don't know--maybe she and her friends are all lesbians! Second,although the pictures were fun, wouldn't it be better to have the sample questions done as realistically as possible? Put the question on the screen and leave it there, the way the TOEFL is actually done! Third, why not truly help those using these videos for help with speaking question type 1 by doing a 15 second timer for prep and the 45 second timer for response time?

    Hi all! I took the test last week and these samples helped me a whole lot! The test is just like that.
    For those who want to prepare for it, I would suggest that you write your own answers, following the same structure of the samples.
    After sometime you will improve and get it right.
    Still waint for the scores...

    Hi Ouliogroove,
    I got my results 2 days back, R 23, L 23, S 26, W 22 in my first attempt, that too with the preparation time of 20 days, This was possible because of your videos. Your speaking and listening videos are too good. Speaking videos will give us an idea of ideal answers although this much of perfectness is not needed in toefl exam to get good scores. And the level of listening videos are really good and match toefl standards. Thanks a lot.

    These sample answers are ridiculous. I am a native spanish speaker and there is no way I could improvise that fast with no hesitation if they asked me (in spanish) one of those questions.
    "What is the most interesting conversation you ever had in your life?"
    Very easy: I instantly recall all the conversations I ever had and, since I keep a scoreboard in my room where I put the top 10 most interesting conversations and two reasons for each being interesting, words will flow like a river.

    My suggestion is if you want to improve your fluency in English, attend a TOEFL review class focusing on the Speaking section. I'm sure there's one available in your place. I attended one for 30 hours tackling all 6 question types. It helped me speak English with less difficulty. But you should enroll two weeks before the test because the fluency diminishes. I've experienced that.

    I didn't get the second question. The response to that just didn't feel correct. The question was "What makes you choose a restaurant? Why is it important to you? Please include...." Can someone please paraphrase?

    • @rawehraweh6559
      @rawehraweh6559 10 лет назад

      2 What makes you choose a restaurant? Why is it important to you. Include details and examples to support your explanation.
      When I choose a restaurant, I make ample parking, my top priority
      Parking cars downtown is not easy and it sometimes takes an hour to find a place to park. If parking is not available, I'd rather not go. The second thing I consider is the atmosphere. When I'm having quality time with my friends and family, I would like to have a meal somewhere where the atmosphere is relaxed. If I have to deal with a long line or finish my meal and get-up immediately, there is no point eating out.

    • @TenzinKunsang
      @TenzinKunsang 10 лет назад +5

      ***** Thank You, but what I meant to say was that what the question seems to ask is, What makes you choose a restaurant over something else, like a pub or eating at home... Like that. If that's the answer, don't you think the question should read, What features of a restaurant are you looking up when choosing one? Maybe, it's a way of saying the same thing that I am not aware of? Either way, it's just not convincing how the question was asked.

    • @superhalfmoon
      @superhalfmoon 9 лет назад +1

      Tenzin Kunsang Hi, it doesn't mean what makes you choose ONE particular restaurant over all other restaurants, but it means what are the QUALITIES that you prefer in restaurants? In this sample answer the woman's preferred QUALITIES were ample space and fair time in.

  • @csobreguel3504

    Don't get intimidated with these sample answers, let it be a guide instead on how you'll answer the questions. Constant practice and faith in one's abilities are the keys to passing the TOEFL exam. As long as you speak with minimal pauses and minimal grammatical errors (and of course, the topic should be addressed), you'll be able to get your target score. Good luck guys!

    Having seen many examples of speaking tasks, I realise that sometimes vague issues come up , which you may never have experienced before, or given a thought of. also,there is the unfairly insufficient preparation time, so what may be being rated is your ability to make up far-fetched "experiences" in your life. I'd much rather be tested personally.

    It is almost impossible to come up with an answer as complete as those with only 15 seconds of preparation. Also, I think most of them are over 45 secs.

    I read that we're supposed to speak as if we're talking to a friend. However, I don't think people talk to their friends in this "formal" tone. So what am I supposed to believe?

      Its better to speak formally, but it doesnt matter that much. just try to be fluent and show youve understand the concept by bringing reasons and examples

      Alright. And what about the accent? I mean, I don't suck at it (and I'm pretty good actually), but sometimes I have trouble pronouncing r's and t's. How would that affect my score?

    • @KalanTheDrummer
      @KalanTheDrummer 7 лет назад

      as far as I know Accent is not considered, But for pronouncing r's, t's, find a way to solve it just for the exam. As not mentioning 's after a specific word is a common mistake people do, your way of pronouncing them maybe considered as a mistake. Just bear in mind that they want you to 1.not making fundamental grammar mistakes. and also 2.talking dynamically with fluency
      and 3. mentioning key points and information (Q3,4,5,6) in your speech.
      I suggest you to playback your answers' voice records and analyze them, it helps you a lot to find a suitable control on how & what you're saying.

    I think it's not a listening practice part, why I need to listen to example very hard.
    a lot of words connected to each other as they wanna confuse ppl. so unclear.
    i have to do more practice!!
