TOEFL SPEAKING question 1 (9 samples)

- This video is proposing 9 practice tasks for the FIRST question in the speaking section of the TOEFL IBT. You will also find sample responses for each of the tasks. These were included with the original CD. If anything, these samples can teach you the format of a good response. But don't let yourself be discouraged by the quality of their language and content. You will only have 15 seconds to prepare and I'm sure these guys took hours to write those samples... So the judges don't expect this kind of quality. But what they do expect is the level of organization they display. So when preparing your response, make sure you respect the following pattern
1: A Clear Topic Statement
2: 2 reasons to hold your opinion
3: Details and examples for each of your reasons.
4: A concise concluding statement... (example: those are the reasons I believe... kind of thing)
With that in mind, you should be able to get a good score for this question at least. That is if your grammar and vocabulary is good... of course.
Here is the link to the PDF speaking scoring grid

It will give you a good idea of what they use to grade you
Being an American myself, I really feel sorry for y'all who take this BS. Funny fact is that many American college students cannot figure out what to say in ......only 15 seconds for preparing.(seriously? 15 seconds?) I mean it just like you go to street asking a random guy some random questions and then what do you expect? Good answers? Get over ETS!
thanks dude, now I feel normal and natural!!
The point is that an average native speaker will still sound like a native speaker. You are graded according to how closely you can match that criteria. You're not expected to give a perfectly smooth and perfectly timed and organized response to every question; as long as you can do about as well as an average educated native speaker, you'll get a very high score.
I was starting to believe that I really suck in english, but you are right! It is really difficult!
Sadly I have to agree. This is a torture and does not make any sense.
I thought I lost all my hopes. Lol I could hardly answer personal questions. zzz
If test takers can answer these questions like the sample answers, they don't need to take this test at all!!
lol you r right
exactly dude 😂
I'm a native english speaker and this droned on and gave me the biggest headache of my life. I'm looking at it for a friend so guys who are going to practice for this I really respect you because it's hard work. Good luck and you'll smash it!
+Nagena Iqbal Smash it? Really? I have huuuge doubts you know :D Anyway thanks for the well wishes. And its not only you who got d biggest headache :)
Thank you ouliogroove, without your videos I wouldn't have any way to practice the speaking section. Just got my scores - got 110 in overall score.
i think i am actually have no answer for all questions.
The first reason... Secondly... For these reasons rephrase the question... = Instant marks
Question 1: What is the best class you have taken in school? Why was it the best in your opinion? Include details and examples to support your explanation
Answer:
The best class [I have taken] in school was my English class.
The first reason is the teacher’s bright and positive personality. I remember this class the most because the teacher always smiled whenever she entered the classroom. She made everyone become enthusiastic about the class. Also, she never yelled or scolded the students, and always encouraged and comforted them.
The second reason is the class atmosphere. Everyone in the class participated well by answering many questions, even though they were not fluent speakers of English. They even formed groups to study together and motivated one another. So I ended up getting A+.
I can't answer the questions easily. I am planning to make lies on my answers or make flowery words.. >:D >:D >:D
Thanks a lot for uploading these videos. I completely relied on your videos for my toefl ibt prep. Initially I thought the responses are well prepared and nobody can give such perfect responses. But slowly I realised, that these are for practice purposes and if we try to master our answers to this perfection , we can get good scores. The examples are excellent one to practice and we can note down the vocabulary used here and try to apply in different contexts. I scored 107 in toefl ibt. Thanks
I like it when i read "This answer is too perfect to be genuine" i feel somehow im good.
Those sample answers didn't help me at all.. Honestly, who would speak like that?
+Min Seok K. all who wants to get high than 100
Nah, last time I did the TOEFL I got 108 and didn't speak (by far) so good. It has to be said, that I lost almost all my points in the speaking section.
very good score anyway.
Yeah, my point is that you don't have to speak like in the examples to get full credit for your responses
Okay, first of all, what's with the comments about the sample responses being too perfect? Even if they were, what's wrong with that? If you're only giving one sample answer per question, why wouldn't you want to give an answer that's going to get a high score as the standard to shoot for? And perfect? Not hardly! The woman talking about going to a pub with friends and talking about girls? Well, I don't know--maybe she and her friends are all lesbians! Second, although the pictures were fun, wouldn't it be better to have the sample questions done as realistically as possible? Put the question on the screen and leave it there, the way the TOEFL is actually done! Third, why not truly help those using these videos for help with speaking question type 1 by doing a 15 second timer for prep and the 45 second timer for response time?
I wanted to comment on this video long time ago to THANK Mr. Ouliogroove a loooooooooooooot for these nice videos specially the speaking and the listening tests.... I would like to advice everyone practicing toefl ibt to try them on youtube, they are so beneficial and available for free ......Do NOT MISS these videos guys and Good luck for all of us.
Hi all! I took the test last week and these samples helped me a whole lot! The test is just like that.
For those who want to prepare for it, I would suggest that you write your own answers, following the same structure of the samples.
After sometime you will improve and get it right.
Still waint for the scores...
Hi Ouliogroove,
I got my results 2 days back, R 23, L 23, S 26, W 22 in my first attempt, that too with the preparation time of 20 days, This was possible because of your videos. Your speaking and listening videos are too good. Speaking videos will give us an idea of ideal answers although this much of perfectness is not needed in toefl exam to get good scores. And the level of listening videos are really good and match toefl standards. Thanks a lot.
Hi,
I'm just passing by to thank you for your very helpful videos! I took the test and got the score I needed to ask for a doctorate scholarship. Your videos were the most helpful material I found, especially for the speaking section, which is the hardest one for me!
she said "Also, she never yelled or scolded the students and always encouraged and comforted them."
I'm a TOEFL teacher and that is HILARIOUS. Thanks for the laugh.
. It is very helpful, but they donot ask about something like that in the toefl.
I really notice that I'm improving myself in speaking with your examples.I'm trying to speak in 45 seconds.thank you
I just passed the test and that channel helped me a lot. Seriously. Thank you so much :)
These sample answers are ridiculous. I am a native spanish speaker and there is no way I could improvise that fast with no hesitation if they asked me (in spanish) one of those questions.
"What is the most interesting conversation you ever had in your life?"
Very easy: I instantly recall all the conversations I ever had and, since I keep a scoreboard in my room where I put the top 10 most interesting conversations and two reasons for each being interesting, words will flow like a river.
Absolutely. I have the exam in a week and I'm training making up stupid but solid answers. That's the way.
the "graduation" one is way too long, it's 57 seconds!!
now.i am an old man,but i want always to enlarge my knowldge in different field of sciences; espcially in improvement my english language;which i consider it the key for any development technology in that modern life.i would like to tell for all the young student in over world, now is very easy to study any foreign laguage by any means,in different place and time;i think really; the best way is online courses, without no difficult and with a great success
as for me i consider TOEFL is a good and helpful test to those who intend to join universities to study for different professional subjects and they are not native speakers or they were not attended English school from the primary and they learnt how to speak English orally or through communicating with different people so, its for them to concentrate on it and pursue the degree in order to qualify for high and professional studies ,,,,,
Awesome job. These videos are really helpful. Wish all of us luck tomorrow at the test
Thanks a lot, this is helping me tons and it's making me more confident about the test. Keep the good job!
My suggestion is if you want to improve your fluency in English, attend a TOEFL review class focusing on the Speaking section. I'm sure there's one available in your place. I attended one for 30 hours tackling all 6 question types. It helped me speak English with less difficulty. But you should enroll two weeks before the test because the fluency diminishes. I've experienced that.
it's obvious that these answers are perfect!!! The author has tought the answer longer than permitted haah
Question 5 got me. I sat there for 15 seconds and couldn't think of an answer let alone reasons and examples to support it!
Hello ouliogroove. THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP. YOU HELPED ME TO GET 104 IN TOEFL IBT.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.
It is reliable transition word and very organized academic event in the college in US, Why I never heard this clear convey American student would be communicate in the dialogue like this.
Thank you so much for these tests!!! IJust before my test day I went through all of them and it really helped me. My TOEFL IBT speaking is 26 THANK YOU!!! BTW, TOEFL sample test also helped me a lot! Good luck!!!
Hi, thank you for the videos. They were really helpful for me. I got 27 for the speaking section with overall marks of 95. Thanks again
English is not my first language. It is very difficult for me to speak the same as these samples.

Thanks a lot for this thing. I really appreciate it. Keep posting.
"the moment I had to overcome"....that's the shttiest answer I have ever heard...I only listened to the beggining and I already knew it wasn't ok
Those answers are better than the professor’s lecture in listening parts...
Yes for example the memorable event in high school is 5 seconds.
I started 1 month ago but probably 2 weeks of sincere effort. but I would like to mention that medium of instruction in schools and colleges, in my country is English and that it is no wonder that we can score high. only part is that I dont use English in everyday conversations except for academic stuff.
The moment I had to overcome was when I got a low score on TOEFL........ man, you really had a most joyful life, didn't you?
thanks for those simple answers it help me a lot please contain publish more videos
thanks to the author... you've been really a great help with my toefl review
The best answer ever. No flaws, except you probably misspelled lapdance as labdance.
@Evelynoto, Hello buddy, I am going to make the Toefl iBT too. The question meant that: what do think the good things in your country that people from other countries should follow?, the answer for that question was for a girl from Koria I think :), wish you the best luck
Hi!
First of all, thanks a lot for these videos. They will help me a lot, because I am really weak in speaking.
Do you have more of these videos? Especially the sample answers further my progress!
And do you guys know when the time starts running? Do I have 15 seconds to prepare AFTER hearing the question or does the time already run when the narrator tells me the question?
unrealistic answers..
It doesn't really matter if it was a realistic or imaginary answer. It is the coherence and the use of language that matter the most. after all, it is a test of your language ability not dare or truth show.
+superhalfmoon I agree.
A "polite burn".
thanks alot
I didn't get the second question. The response to that just didn't feel correct. The question was "What makes you choose a restaurant? Why is it important to you? Please include...." Can someone please paraphrase?
2 What makes you choose a restaurant? Why is it important to you. Include details and examples to support your explanation.
When I choose a restaurant, I make ample parking, my top priority
Parking cars downtown is not easy and it sometimes takes an hour to find a place to park. If parking is not available, I'd rather not go. The second thing I consider is the atmosphere. When I'm having quality time with my friends and family, I would like to have a meal somewhere where the atmosphere is relaxed. If I have to deal with a long line or finish my meal and get-up immediately, there is no point eating out.
***** Thank You, but what I meant to say was that what the question seems to ask is, What makes you choose a restaurant over something else, like a pub or eating at home... Like that. If that's the answer, don't you think the question should read, What features of a restaurant are you looking up when choosing one? Maybe, it's a way of saying the same thing that I am not aware of? Either way, it's just not convincing how the question was asked.
Tenzin Kunsang Hi, it doesn't mean what makes you choose ONE particular restaurant over all other restaurants, but it means what are the QUALITIES that you prefer in restaurants? In this sample answer the woman's preferred QUALITIES were ample space and fair time in.
Don't get intimidated with these sample answers, let it be a guide instead on how you'll answer the questions. Constant practice and faith in one's abilities are the keys to passing the TOEFL exam. As long as you speak with minimal pauses and minimal grammatical errors (and of course, the topic should be addressed), you'll be able to get your target score. Good luck guys!
Nice video. Thanks!
By the way, do not be scared from the sample answers here, they are IDEAL, in real exam you are not required to be as such of course, but within the sample answers here there are a lot of ideas which can be used to answer different Qs.
@maggycol i know that :) i just gave my toefl exam yesterday .... but still.... there are many obstacles that come into your mind when you just listen to the word "obstacle" ...rather than toefl low score.. :)
thank u very much for this post, it is very useful
these sample responses have a pattern.
Firstly a thesis....followed by first reason supporting thesis with some details..
then comes second reason nd again details abt this reason nd finally a conclusion saying that "due to above reasons so and so happend"....
Thank you it is very helpful.
Nice practice, on the TOEFL frame!
The third question was: what is your dream job? He was expected to talk about his dream job and not about what he wouldnt like to be.
How come the quality of my responses are way below that of the sample responses. I am so nervous, about to take toefl on dec. 20. I need at least 100!! waaaaaa
how did you do? I m taking the toefl in two weeks and I m freaking out!
Thanks for share this material, I am going to take the test again, oh crap!!!!
Having seen many examples of speaking tasks, I realise that sometimes vague issues come up , which you may never have experienced before, or given a thought of. also, there is the unfairly insufficient preparation time, so what may be being rated is your ability to make up far-fetched "experiences" in your life. I'd much rather be tested personally.
I WANT, I WANT!! I'm doing my toefl on saturday, I'm neeeeeeeeervous.
Thank you very much. you are so kind. =)
For example: what is your favorite class? who is your favorite teacher ? who is the person who affected you the most? who is the one whom you cant forget and you appreciate ? ALL these Qs can have the same idea of answer to Q.1 here (about the English class and teacher ) and so on.....try to be practical in study and organize your schedule ...God with you all
@thegirlintube
oh honey ... Why i was here??? i ll clear that doubt for you .. I was here , coz i had to prepare for my toefl exam. If you know what preparation is , and if you know what toefl is, then you might understand what i said :) .. and i scored 113 a long way back in toefl in first attempt. And i found these videos really helpful in my 2 days preparation for the exam. But i still stand by my word about the obstacle thing. I am still jealous of that girl/guy. :)
thanks, your tips are valuable!
Indeed! I find myself talking gibberish after the beep.
Thanks so much.
Some of the answers exceed the expected time of 45 seconds, and also the questions are well prepared. It's obvious that the speaker is only reading. Do you think under time restrictions one should ever be able to say all these words?
cool..thanx
Thanks a LOT !
@Evelynoto
Which custom from your country do you think people in other countries should adopt?
Couldn't have explained my problem (which I couldn't understand properly myself) better!
great
i have really big problem on speaking
i think this will help
@tam241 which public place you want to go to...., answer could be a restaurant, a bar, club or night club.
The sample answer for practice 4 was quite well past 45 sec in my opnion.
Totally agree with you
thank you
@thegirlintube - i think i am making sense to anyone who knows english well :) ... and "please do mention my spelling mistakes" ..that might help me, because i really need to learn from someone who thinks toefl is a big hurdle, but still have guts to point out someone else's mistakes :) . Please. Help me out here. Point out the mistakes, and if you are right, i might accept them. :)
I really need a toefl speaker, or a native person for conversations so i can improuve my english speaking plz
@ milosskomi You have to get more than the required minimum always to be in the safe side...
Videos of ouliogroove in SPEAKING & LISTENING are sooooooooooooo beneficial,
Also Cambridge TOEFL preparation book is very good and advanced. You can get it from online amazon.
Have an organized schedule focusing on TOEFL only for a period from 21-30 days Maximum.
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Good Luck
What was that third question speakers accent?? WTF couldnt understand nothing!
Glad that you could encrypt that.
But I'm really glad to not need
Ya, even after listening 4 times I couldn't hear properly. After Hearing answer I knew it's should adopt.
Sounds British to me
Yes, there are many articulate and well-spoken gays. But no doubt there are others that speak exactly like you. ;-)
What is the source fir these sample questions. The format is ETS and the samples are yours, correct?
Just be fake and positive about everything and then you have a good answer!
There are not Scripts :( the link sends me to a Page Not Found
Thank u so much :)
helpful for us
It is almost impossible to come up with an answer as complete as those with only 15 seconds of preparation. Also, I think most of them are over 45 secs.
In the actual toefl test is there any option rerecord my answer if i made some mistakes in the previous recording?
Genius! 30!
Good
I read that we're supposed to speak as if we're talking to a friend. However, I don't think people talk to their friends in this "formal" tone. So what am I supposed to believe?
Its better to speak formally, but it doesnt matter that much. just try to be fluent and show youve understand the concept by bringing reasons and examples
Alright. And what about the accent? I mean, I don't suck at it (and I'm pretty good actually), but sometimes I have trouble pronouncing r's and t's. How would that affect my score?
as far as I know Accent is not considered, But for pronouncing r's, t's, find a way to solve it just for the exam. As not mentioning 's after a specific word is a common mistake people do, your way of pronouncing them maybe considered as a mistake. Just bear in mind that they want you to 1.not making fundamental grammar mistakes. and also 2.talking dynamically with fluency
and 3. mentioning key points and information (Q3,4,5,6) in your speech.
I suggest you to playback your answers' voice records and analyze them, it helps you a lot to find a suitable control on how & what you're saying.
I think it's not a listening practice part, why I need to listen to example very hard.
a lot of words connected to each other as they wanna confuse ppl. so unclear.
i have to do more practice!!
"15 seconds" is not fair
well, one thing i noticed is the ending ... i think we are supposed to end with conclusion..
Conclusions are not necessarily needed dude
They're helpful.
agree!!
wow ye thats a good idea!
it almost drove me crazy because i thought i couldnt answer it in my native language either... but i never actually tried it. maybe itll help me =)
im so afraid of the speakinig section :S
