I am a commercial HVAC company owner in the Carolinas and I can tell you this I fired all the restaurants we had we concentrate on manufacturing, and office buildings never been happier no weekends nights or holidays they don’t even blink when you hand them a bill
Where in the Carolina’s??
It's crazy to see you working on equipment and with customers in a state like California. I come out of Colorado and the demand for heating and cooling on a daily basis is insane. I can't imagine a 70° day in August or a 55° day in November without complaints for either heating or cooling.
I love the 80's synthpop during the soldering montage :-)

Broke all the rules and got lucky! ;) Knowing your customer and knowing the risks of 'shortcuts' is key. I hope your customer understands how fortunate they are to have the benefit of your experience and wisdom! Well done!
Maybe cut open a filter/dryer like this to show what happens inside?
He's done that in previous videos. I'm not sure which videos in particular has it, but I know he's done so in more than one video.
Customer: Why is my compressor steaming hot?
Tech: Because it's well done!🤣🔥
Overheated refrigeration oil turns into some sort of powder most of the time, ive seen some that looked like it turned into burnt caramel and stuck to a wall of 3/8 inch pipe, plugged solid
replace just the compressor and service nothing else. rinse and repeat every 6 months. this was happening at a place i worked at. compressor was short cycling and the owner's "guy" just kept replacing it over and over. I tried to tell the owner what was going on and he flipped out on me
With stage one having a full charge and a plugged up drier....i too would of thought those fixed bore would've been plugged. That oil is most definitely trashed and that compressor has been overheating for quite some time now. That unit is definitely on life 8 of 9....living on borrowed time.
Interesting thought. The filter did it's job and sacrificed itself. It plugged not the metering device.
@@deseehc yes it did do its job....next question...is for how long before it pluggs up again. That oil is toast. That or the fixed bore are next to plug up.
The AC is doubling as a cook surface for the kitchen. No that is energy efficient! 🤣
Also I picked up the Wiha insulated torque set and loving it. I got the new version with the additional bits.
perhaps run a preheat water line for the dishwasher
So appreciate all your videos and the work you put into making it public, thank you and keep up the great work
Love the way you work, also your comments towards the end are helpful.God Bless.
Dude I personally feel your the best in this field and your videos, so please 🙏 stay strong..
Thank you for taking time Sunday
Great video 💯X💯
God bless you and your family 🙏
The oil in that stage has likely turned into blackened tar from overheating, which is probably what clogged up the drier. And I agree about the whole system needing to be replaced; with the age and condition of the unit, and all the work that needs to be done to it, all the cost of labor and parts isn’t really worth it. Just replace it! Of course I’d still be happy to do the work, but I’m also looking out for the customer’s best interests.
You never let us down always for your customer !!!!!!
I LOVE your videos so much ❤❤
@hvacr videos hey man. Thank you again for taking the time to upload and edit videos and the prices you go through to explain. Real quick, on the topic of your house unit. Another channel, Griffin Air. East coast guy that was gung-ho on Bosch inverters and put one in his home just put out a video changing his mind because he needs a motor for a unit he sold under warranty, and he is approaching 3 months now.... no motor. No guarantee on when he will get it. But he can sell a new unit with a motor today. Just saying. Something to consider. He just put out the video today, so check it out if you want. Stay safe out there man!!
Well done my friend!
Thank you for sharing these awesome videos! I'm a 20 plus year carpenter in Canada that wants to change my trade to HVAC now. Respect for real craftsmanship is almost non-existent this day in age. The skills required and general workload seem to just keep extending more and more as people demand nothing less these days. With very little pay increase for even higher quality back breaking work over the years, has me questioning why? We survey, dig, pour concrete, frame, roof, side, and interior finish custom homes making the least amount of money in all trades. I used to have great self-satisfactory and pride after a good build as I love working with my hands, but now looking at the future, I truely feel like I could have a lighter work load physically and a better retirement fund, if I switch to a higher paying trade.
I enjoy and learn quite a bit from your videos and am inspired by your professionalism and customer service. Thanks again, and I look forward to more great videos.
Funny you say that since the general HVAC trade in Canada is not at all a well paying trade. For the first reason that getting a gas technician license isn't considered a trade. The only ones who make money in HVAC in Canada are the guys with the full refrigeration license and a G1 gas license.
Literally more from you then at school, lol. Thanks bro!
working for restaurants must be tough. every expense is too much and these units are rotting away nonstop due to no maintenance at all
Nice job 👏 bro
Now that's what I call The compliant scroll as it is acting as compliant as it possibly can with the cooked head of the scroll 🥵😂
My FIL 22+ year old R22 did the same thing, smoking compressor and all. Fixed it 2 years ago and still working to this day.

Nice work
Great video information 👍❤ thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience 🇵🇭🫡,
How's the Safety procedure for brazing??? And charging of refrigerant?
Please make a video tutorial please 🙏❤
Great video dude! The step process of the diagnosis and repair is pretty much how most of us seasoned guys go about approaching an old carrier like this, and not knowing the stipulations behind the call origin and the customers budget and all of that good stuff, did you recommend combing the condenser coil and splitting the coil for cleaning? I’m just curious if that’s something to even educate the customer on before next cooling season or just unit replacement with hail guards are already in the plans? Keep fighting the good fight and making good videos brother
Good job 👌🏻🥶
Hey great video as always. I manually type your channel. Why RUclips doesn't send me notifications, I don't know. Thx for the video.
Love the Vice city ish vibe music edit while brazing.
Edit- atleast that what it made me think of lol little nostalgic moment of my 12 year old self driving around Miami on gta. Simpler times….
Sunday sorted!
Nice brazing montage tune!
Just here for the synths and the punch drums.
Could you open the drier and have a look?
That would tell the story!
Good job getting that museum exhibit running. The customer would be wise to start ordering equipment right away so you can address the worst of the issues before the return of heat. Otherwise there will be tears flowing along with the sweat, an unholy mixture.
Well, I would also said try changing the dryer in that situation.
Best case it runs again, worst case it won’t.
But I don’t think that try won’t be too expensive 😎
Since it’s now running, I’d go on to order a replacement
do you do Black Friday Deals? 😂😂😂
would a manual high pressure switch be consider preventive maintenance.?
The same thing again and again. The others before you cannot be bothered to braze with nitrogen. IF prior compressor burnout, the system wasn't flushed to eliminate acid products. The filter does it's job and now plugged.
Hate that shit. Braze with nitrogen(especially after a burnout) or get out of the industry.
The compressor isn’t burnt out. Running elevated head pressures or an excessively high compression ratio can cause this and a lack of pms on the units
@@shifter8207 True however the condenser was still open.
@@xzearr more like braze with nitrogen period or get out.
core max units. when i’m already in refer circuit and there is room to easily do so, i take a moment to slap a set of additional service ports in and leave original core max ports in place. ever install iso valves on a line dryer for easier preventative changeout with comfort cooling Equipment? .
Good ol r22 unit. It's sad that r22 went away.
Do you prefer to umbrage the dryer or cut out ?
Another Great video Chris . My Sunday ritual! most of my customers have completely stopped PMs -money being the biggest issue . So we just patch em and continue to recommend…….
Once we run in to a filter fault, its completly fall apart in the inside and clocged the compressor suc side, fortunatly is was had a metal basket at the connection , but the oil was trash. btw it was installed in the suc line , so we needed to moove it to the liq side.
The life expectancy of those unit's is only about 15 years? I did not know that, that seems low. And here I am trying to keep our 25 year old a/c running...
Yeah but the location where he is there's lots of sand which gets into contactors and electrical components, and very high temperatures like 110+ F which is like 45+ Celsius. Plus this unit has fin damage to the condenser coil which makes it work even harder.
I noticed towards the end of the video there was a temp probe on the disconnect pointed in front of the condenser coil? Was that to measure temp at the condenser coil or did you just stick it there?
THIS IS MY TAKE ABOUT THE DRIER PLUGGED UP. SINCE THE COMPRESSOR OVERHEATING AND OVERHEATING COULD CAUSE METAL SHREDDED (LIKE SHRAPNEL) THAT GOES TO THAT DRIER AND IT CAUSE PLUGGED UP. IN ADDITION, THAT COMPRESSOR WILL FAILED IN THE END (MECHANICAL/ ELECTRICAL)
Make sure the inside coils are clean on the intake side
How's the new scale? I really want to move away from a b-tank to oxy acetylene, any advice
I gotta get someone to look at my 1997 Mitsubishi mini-split R22 unit, pretty sure it is slightly low on refrigerant because it ices up and spews condensation when it runs hard, so we were just running it on low fan and letting it cycle by setting temperature a degree or two below room temp with an additional 600 watt window AC to supplement the cooling, but I’ve moved and want to rent the place out, so the janky window AC need to go... ultimately it should be replaced with a heat pump because there’s just a baseboard heater, but the building doesn’t allow new AC units to be installed anymore, so we’re stuck with vintage AC.
sometimes owners corporations are their own worst enemy. It could be low charge, or perhaps restricted in the metering device.
Electrical engineer, but NOT a trained HVAC guy here, north Texas. Had my condenser fan crater on my December 2010 installed Trane 4 ½ ton home central AC unit (not a heat pump), and the compressor went in to overtemp shut down. I caught it within a couple of hours, and shut it down for the week it took to get a replacement fan motor (replaced it myself). The unit came back up and seems to run fine now. To the touch my dryer does not seem to have a temp drop across it, but wondering now if maybe I should have the dryer replaced just to be safe.
Unless there is a temp drop across the dryer or the system has been opened, there's no reason to replace them preventatively.
@@Thermoelectric7 Thanks!
Quiero ver cómo está ese filtro por dentro, si aún no lo desechaste agradeceré un vídeo corto sobre lo que ese pequeño tiene dentro XD
Hey how did you bypass the VfD on video #440 just curious
When will the customer need to decide to replace, considering the extended lead times now?
I appreciate all of your videos that you make, but I have a question to ask you or your community, its a werid happening is the best way I am going to say it sadly, I was working on pressure leak test on a residenstial ac 3.5ton and some how my testo 550s digital guages, highside pressure just froze the reading froze on the screen and I could not read whats happening, a little while later the other side froze and then the screen failed not sure what happened to them but it happened pretty darn fast, have any of you ever have that happen before?
what about the head pressure control, why not cutoff
How come you didn't put the cooling hose attc.on the Comp. ?
It might last until next spring, your customer is lucky we're nearly at the end of peak cooling season. I'm sure it'll die once temps get back into the 110+ range. The insanely high summer temps you get there combined with that condenser coil being so damaged is going to do a number on it. In hindsight, what you could have done is sweat in two 3/8 flare adapters and install a -HH drier, those are pretty good for wax removal, and Sporlan used to have a demo setup back in the 1980's with old black compressor oil being cleaned up back to a straw color with only 24 hours of compressor run time. HH is not for acid removal like some people think, it's high wax capacity. When the oil gets cooked, especially POE oils, it forms waxes which plug up metering devices and valves. That way with flares would be simple to keep replacing the drier until they can get a new unit. With unit availability as bad as it is right now, on top of new energy efficiency rules kicking in next year, you might have to change that drier a few more times, even if they approve a new unit tomorrow, it might be months before you can get a new unit shipped, then schedule the crane etc to get it changed out.
I like your way of thinking!
In the good old days of hydraulic, we would install traps!
Those traps would have valves at the bottom and we would see where the clear glass what's in the system.
Yeah that’s what I was going to say you fried the dryer. Good job though.
Yellow Jacket fin comb kit. #17 comb
The plugged dryer would have created very high superheat for the compressor, letting discharge temperature go through the roof.
I wonder if trying to replace the oil in the compressor and doing a full flush would let it run a bit longer? The compressor replacement is almost the cost of a new unit so it may buy some time?
3 phase compressor like that might run you $4000? With labour $5500 ish? New unit installed would be somewhere in the 12-13K range.
Many HVAC in your videos got a gaz line to warn the air in the winter, is it just a backup in case it's very cold or any of them are reversible ?
They are package units and double as the heat source for the building in the winter.
How come you not clean the condenser this time?
Why do I feel like I’ve seen this video a year or so ago maybe it’s the high flow shrewder depressor reference?
💪🇺🇸❄👍 thanks

I'm sure there is insulation damage on the motor windings. I bet it shorts out before too long.
I found a line compressor in a reach in freezer that was so hot you could cook a egg on it and a steak!
👍👍
that filter dryer will probably outlast that unit... but the real question .. is can you even get a new unit?
By the market this days... 6 months if you inmediatly order and put money down, and even then thats a very optimistic try.
@@rioja951 I ordered a 5 ton heat pump from carrier in march.. was told it would be shipped by September and when I called them they said the factory hasn't even made these yet and pushed it back to December... crazy
I have to say this because it is the truth. You are honestly the most perfect man, everything about you is absolutely incredible your looks, your voice, your intelligence… you are amazing ❤
5:57 how about using some wetrag?
It was the end of the day and I was tired... didnt want to deal with the heat blocking compound... Im not always prefect
To be fair, combustion engines and their oil can readily run at temperatures beyond boiling point of water. Oil cooled motorcycle engines run HOT in summer and many still live much longer than newer bikes that just make flat out too much power per displacement. Its the electrical insulation that has me worried. But again. 100 Celsius is pretty much fine for well made transformer/motor windings. It will fail quicker, almost all electrical stuff loves to run temperate - not too cold, not too hot - but you can engineer insulation to take this no problems.....
Can you do a video on the difference in HVAC jobs/titles and the realistic differences? Reading and trying to organize them online and asking people isn't helping when trying to choose a path.
Ive been in this field for 29 years,do you like building things, then installing is the side you want to be on,if you like fixing broken things then service is the side you want to follow! If you dont like dealing with people all that much, then residential service may not be for you,so if you like being on call (alot) and working in the middle of the night and on holidays, commercial service is for you.
@@petersmart1999 thats good to know. I appreciate the simple explanation. That's what I needed.
Using the force you must.😁
Also keep in mind more and more residential companies are being bought by large national chains which is bringing in an entirely different mindset that pushes sales percentages over quality repair work. I've interviewed with several local companies over the years that explicitly say that the actual service and repair is secondary and that all of their "service techs" are required to sell a certain amount of PM contracts, add-ons (UV filters, air scrubbers, etc.), and new equipment or the company's metrics won't be met and the tech will quickly find themselves unemployed. I went straight into industrial/commercial and never regretted it.
@@talleyz thanks for the heads up...ironically I have experienced just what you said when I interviewed for an HVAC company last year. They were definitely all about sales.
the best way to get notified I found is either use the youtube app on mobile and turn on notifications or use use email if you have that option
I guess restaurants are cautious with their maintenance “budget” if they even have one.
45# LPCO & DLT-Stat would be good.
you could cook a burger on that compressor holy smokes. Isn't there a thermal overload that would open if the compressor got too hot?

Must be global cooling, sorry, Global warming, sh*t, climate change…….🤣 Just in case….
Why would you stick your hand into a refrigeration condensing unit which could possibly have a bad earth and also the unit could potentially be live with three phase voltages, how is this professional work possibly putting other people watching this video at risk.
unlikely to get shocked if it was live would have grounded out and if the whole box was live just touching the access panel would have gotten a shock also peole do whatever they want you cannot direct them from a youtube be video lol
@@thewatchersofthewood3530 That's what I mean by a bad earth or ground, plus the unit is on the roof so it would have to rely on the ground wiring, plus the fault could occur even after the panel was removed and the culprit would be the overheating compressor. And no you can't direct people of the risks but you can warn them.
@@tyronenelson9124 If there was a bad ground, there wouldn't be a ground path through the person, and no or minimal shock, only through capacitance. The drain line was cut, so it wasn't a ground path, maybe some sneak paths through ducting with enough resistance to have voltage but not enough to trip the breaker. But everything in the unit is likely to be at the same potential, so without touching another ground, it's hard to get shocked. So, one either has a working ground and the fuses blow, or a non-working ground and difficult reaching a ground and the unit.
@@johnhaller5851 But this is 3 phase voltages we are talking about at 210v ac not 110v ac, and depending on the body's resistance to it, could still be hazardous.
@@tyronenelson9124 There has to be a path to ground, or all those birds sitting on the distribution power lines would be getting shocked. Unless birds are really all robots, that is. Either the case is grounded and the fuse blows, or it's not, and the case has 208v. The only thing nearby which was possibly grounded was the drain line which has been cut because it was plugged. If the case was hot, grabbing both sides of the cut drain line would be bad.
