Mike, this is amazing! I started lifting 2 months ago and deadlifts absolutely kill me, but I've noticed that my form is kinda off so I've been working on that and you just uploaded this video. What I've noticed thanks to yours and Layne Norton's guide is that I don't keep my body tight enough and I don't pull back my lats when I'm lifting the weight, which leads to me being unstable and rounding my back. Just wanted to mention that in case anyone's got the same problem. Even though I kinda hate it, I'll try to master the deadlift in 2016!
+mike rodriguez Why do you people act as if this is something revolutionary?Don't get me wrong,I appreciate the videos, but with all the content that is already out,you people have no excuse as for why your lifts are not decent after 1-2 years of lifting.
I agree. I don't like training the deadlift more than once a week. Usually my two lower body days are: day 1: high rep body weight squats to warm up, barbell squats day 2: high rep body weight squats to warm up, regular deadlifts, assistance exercises like reverse hyper or leg extensions or deadlift rack work (pins, chains, bands).
I value these tips so much. One because Maxx Chewning uses them. Second, I'm as as new as they come in weightlifting and already increasing my deadlifts tenfold. I can't wait to get stronger.
Dude, awesome video! I've started using a band for squat and deadlift warm-ups and it made a huge difference. Would love to hear your take on how to combat shoulder rotation due to sedentary lifestyle. I'm doing daily external rotation work at home with bands, and I'm always looking for fresh ideas on shoulder mobility
Just found your videos and they're great. I've been working out a little over a year, and I added deadlifts to my workout about 6 months ago. I'm 5'6" 178lbs and I just hit a PR of 405 this week. Still a WIP, but the tips from your videos should help get that number up. Thanks 👍
Mike is awesome, such a humble guy. Video was great as well. Him, Omar and Bart have the best training advice. I'd probably be an uber noob if it was not for their content.
Hey, this is a great video! I look forward to trying these techniques when I do deadlifts next. Deadlifts are certainly something I can improve on and a lot of what you mentioned I definitely need to add to my routine. Cheers!
THANK YOU for sharing your programming!! Been sitting at the same weight for a while in my sumo, but hella don't have the money to invest in a program rn being a college student. I'm gonna try out this programming method and see if it works for me!
What I usually do kind of instead of warming up for deadlifts is to do some of my squat assistance exercises (usually front squats) so I can get used to deadlifting fatigued because that's usually how it is at a meet unless you're doing push/pull or DL only
Quick question. Would you still recommend one deadlift session per week for newbies? (I've lifted weights for 6 months but want to get into strength training)
Hey I'm 13 years old and I wanna get stronger and better at lifting so I went to the gym today and lifted 225 lbs but I could only do it once but hopefully this will help me!☺️
If i train deadlift once a week and one accessory on the other lower body day, should i keep the intensity the same at the deadlift day or change it from week to week?
Any cues during the deadlift to help with hip/glute activation? I pull 525 Sumo and I feel like I'm not using them enough during the lift. Great video btw
Hey mate, thanks for the great info and accessory workout that help support a decent deadlift. Are you able to link or put the name of the mobility mob in your description because I couldnt understand what the second word in the website was.
+Silent Mike Hey Mike, how long do you warm yourself up befor starting your actual working sets. It takes me around 30-35min to warm up and get loose for my full body programm. Cheers mate.
Yo Mike, love the channell. Keep doing what you do! Let me ask you, how do I determine how many days a week should I dedicate to bench, squat and DL (OHP also?). For example, you say you do deads 3 times a week (heavy, medium, light). Do you do all your other lifts as frequent or does this apply only to a specific period of time (let's say 3 months) you dedicated for building up your deadlift. I'm a beginner lifter and just getting into powerlifting. Still figuring out my form on the lifts, tweaking, trying out different programs. What do you think I should focus on, and how should I go about my programming?
You should do a video of you shopping for food and maybe a workout session too Ive watched the powerlifters shopping on Omars challenge with you and kwan like 12 times
Hey Mike can you do a video on the Powerclean and front squat, had to start lifting at home and don't have a squat rack so I have to clean the weight to squat but the position of the bar on my shoulder where I catch it feels really uncomfortable hope you can help
awesome tips! thanks for doing this vid. When you say you do L/M/H days but only DL once a week does that mean you only pull heavy once a month? Or do you mean you DL heavy once a week (with M and L days throughout the week)? If the former, would you DL more than once a week since you're going light?
Hey Mike I always had a hard time understanding this.. but why do most coaches recommend higher sets and lower reps for light dl workouts? Is it not good to do lower sets and higher reps (which I prefer) for dls?? Thanks
Hey Mike, I know you said squats also help with the deadlift which I agree with but what do you think bout programs that is squat based and has you deadlift 1 working set in a week or none at all? Do you believe you can still have a great deadlift if your squats are going well if you're not even training the movement?
I personally did/still do the jason blaha 5x5 and replaced back squats with front squats. The deadlift is the one lifts that I am yet to stall on. It simply skyrocketted.... for me it works great. And especially not using a belt for my front squats and deadlifts seemed to be very helpful too.
Do you stretch before big lifts? I have very tight hamstrings and hips, and feel like it may be beneficial to stretch them before deadlifts. Is this OK, or should warming up efficiently be enough?
+Silent Mike Thanks Mike! Could you briefly go over his style of periodization or other forms of linear periodization a little more complicated than just straight linear in one of your videos?
Andrew Wilbur doing it multiple days a week is a bad idea, 2 times a week at max when you get doing a bit more intense workouts. You need to let your muscles rest so they can repair and become stronger. Powerlifting isn’t for everyone but if you want to do it, go ahead. With enough work and effort, you’ll see your maxes go up
"The dead lift is very technical, and takes a lot of technique" - That's going on my gym wall today haha

Your tip, "try to cover your armpits with your shoulders", really helped me tighten up my form. Thanks bro.
Really liked this style of video. Quality content.
I've really enjoyed watching your videos progress and lifts go up! keep it up man

Simple and very informative-a lot of great knowledge right there-thanks Mike :D

Love the video! keep up the good work. More specific topic videos like this in the future please!
Great vid Mike! Recently I've been doing deadlifts twice a week. One heavy and one light day. I wanna pull 500+. I'm getting close.

Silent Mike so doing like a cycle? Some weeks 4x6, another 3x6 and one time maybe 6x4 and on the acessory day always 3x10 romanians?
+Quantum yes thats how i outline in video.
Silent mike lookin like Mario
Any cues during the deadlift to help with hip/glute activation? I pull 525 Sumo and I feel like I'm not using them enough during the lift. Great video btw

+Silent Mike Hey Mike, how long do you warm yourself up befor starting your actual working sets. It takes me around 30-35min to warm up and get loose for my full body programm. Cheers mate.

+Silent Mike Why don't you guys train with Ogus. He's just down the street (citrus Heights)?
Yo Mike, love the channell. Keep doing what you do!

I'm a beginner lifter and just getting into powerlifting. Still figuring out my form on the lifts, tweaking, trying out different programs. What do you think I should focus on, and how should I go about my programming?
i deadlift 1x a week... rotating heavy medium light.
+Silent Mike ohhh, got it. That's what was confusing me. Meh, I guess I'm just trying to do a lot of things at the same time.
pause at 3:22. is that level of convex arching in the back safe??
Hey you're supposed to be live right now
You should do a video of you shopping for food and maybe a workout session too Ive watched the powerlifters shopping on Omars challenge with you and kwan like 12 times

Love your content! U still doing online coaching ?
Great Info. I wish we had a reverse hyper in our gym. Anything else that is similar I can do to replace that accessory Silent Mike?
not really, back extensions or leg curls are good though
Great! Thanks for the love on my IG. Even though it was me doing one squat and stopping cause of my tender rib. hahaha. Keep up the vids.

lol. ive been deadlifting for 6 months and i pull 405.
lol i'm 2 yrs old training for 3 days and I pull 550 lol
Arshdeep Duggal m8. what supplements do u use?
rich piana 5% nutrition
Arshdeep Duggal fuck Reich Piana and his fucking 8 hour piano lessons.
Good video
What better
Penlay row or bent over row?
Mike so week 1 you do heavy, week 2 medium, week 3 light and rotate that every three weeks?
perrttyyy much
Would you still recommend this for newbies?
(I have lifted weights for 6 months, but want to get into strength training)
awesome tips! thanks for doing this vid.
When you say you do L/M/H days but only DL once a week does that mean you only pull heavy once a month? Or do you mean you DL heavy once a week (with M and L days throughout the week)? If the former, would you DL more than once a week since you're going light?
i deadlift once a week and rotate l/m/h...yes "heavy" only once a month, you dont need to lift 90% all the time to get stronger.
Silent Mike
Ah k. Thanks for clarifying!
Sick outro
reverse hyper looks so much fun to me:D
Thx fam really helped.
Thanks for the tips and advice. Am I correct in assuming squats are coming next?
travling a bit but yes in a few weeks.
How come I have a hard time activating my glutes/hammies even when using a hip circle?
Good Tips Silent Mike, Do you and mark work of your real 100% Rep Max or a TM of 90% similar to the 531 program?
we go by a loose %.. so neither haha
Thanks BRO
Nice overview 😎💪👍
Great video!
What do you think of an upper, lower, rest spilt Mike?
What's that background song called? I used to listen to it a while back but I totally forgot it's name.
thanks for the tips my deadlift went from 176 pounds(80kg) to 440 pounds(200kg) in 4 months
Wait what
Bruh it took me a month and a half to put 10 pounds to my deadlift
Im stuck on all my lifts and have been for a while. 5x5 helped me but now im not going backwards what should i do?
Hey Mike I always had a hard time understanding this.. but why do most coaches recommend higher sets and lower reps for light dl workouts? Is it not good to do lower sets and higher reps (which I prefer) for dls?? Thanks
higher reps just can beat u up and effext next session... also higher reps more likely for form breakdown on technical lift.
Silent Mike I see I see thanks mang!
Just finished deadlifts
Can't seem to find the mobility one website? Do you have the link, cheers.
just type MobilityWOD into youtube
Mike what does your typical training week look like?
Is romanian deadlift good accessory movement for sumo/conventional dl?
Hey Mike, I know you said squats also help with the deadlift which I agree with but what do you think bout programs that is squat based and has you deadlift 1 working set in a week or none at all? Do you believe you can still have a great deadlift if your squats are going well if you're not even training the movement?
obviously not deadlifting isnt the best to help your deadlift. if you want to focus on squats taking a break for a block wont make it disappear though
I personally did/still do the jason blaha 5x5 and replaced back squats with front squats. The deadlift is the one lifts that I am yet to stall on. It simply skyrocketted.... for me it works great. And especially not using a belt for my front squats and deadlifts seemed to be very helpful too.
Mike, what's your opinion on Candito's 6 week program?
Do you stretch before big lifts?
I have very tight hamstrings and hips, and feel like it may be beneficial to stretch them before deadlifts.
Is this OK, or should warming up efficiently be enough?
Stretch just enough to help get in position but do most of your stretching afterwards.
Make a training program!
What does "brace" means?
MIIIIKE!...I love you
Do you think that Ed Coan style linear periodization or cube method style non linear periodization is better for an intermediate?
both can work- Ed Coan peaked linear but not as simple as youd think
+Silent Mike Thanks Mike! Could you briefly go over his style of periodization or other forms of linear periodization a little more complicated than just straight linear in one of your videos?
i love to dead lift! i just dont want to SNAP SOMETHING!
Why did you even say this
What is the name of back ground song?
good vid
what about doing it everyday or every other day? I wanna try powerlifting i'm not sure where to start
Andrew Wilbur doing it multiple days a week is a bad idea, 2 times a week at max when you get doing a bit more intense workouts.
