I remember when i was younger my dad used to buy me broken toys or electronic devices for me to disassemble with him in the workshop, great times and great vídeo as always! Happy holydays from Argentina!
Ahoyhoy! I used to de latexify toys like this to see how they work. when I was a kid, my parents saw my fascination with learning how animatronics worked as a toy breaking phase and sadly most did get thrown away. I actually like having broken shabby looking animatronics , it adds character to the look!
Hi Mr. Pete, All, At 15:57, there is a small vertical circuit board right above your thumb that has a black blob on it. Under that black blob is likely one or more integrated circuits such as a microprocessor, and or digital to analog converter. That's the conductor of the whole show. Everything else, resistors, capacitors, transistors, wires, appears like common off the shelf parts you could get from an electronics supplier such as Digi-Key. The arrangement of all of the parts, the position of each part's lead holes, and the shaping of the each part's leads, makes me fairly certain that these parts were assembled by hand to the circuit board. The circuit board per se is of the least expensive "brown board" variety, where copper traces are only found on one side, and jumper wires were used if needed on the top side to complete the circuit routing.
Usually the most common issue with these is the motor shaft gear (9,or 10 tooth) gets a little tiny split in it, causing the gear not turn properly. This explains why the head was making a loud buzzing sound. There's nothing to turn the gears inside. It's a pretty simple fix if you know how to fix it. If you would like to fix your singing fish, check out my channel and look for the video called "how to repair your singing fish's head". Same goes for the tail, and mouth
The black epoxy / die combo is known as COB "chip on board". It's the cheapest way of adding an IC to anything in large volumes. Usually reliable, it's basically impossible to repair if anything goes wrong.
There was one at our shop above a desk and was forever pestering us with his songs. That desk was close to the trash can and anytime an item was thrown at the can Billy would crank up. Thanks for doing what I had thought about doing several times.
Mr. Pete that "headphone jack" is actually a sensor and if you turned billy off he could still operate by pressing the red button. The on/off switch only controls the sensor.
Thank you for demonstrating the proper use of wire-cutters...! And...on that circuit Board...at one side, with the 7-8 contacts...a tiny metal 'heat-sink' with a dab of black epoxy....under that epoxy is a small integrated circuit that has a bit of built-in 'memory' that controls everything and generates the 'music'....similar stuff can be found in cheap digital watches and 'musical' toys...I even found a similar circuit inside the red LED flashing light for my bicycle...
best thing to happen to billy the big mouth bass found it very funny and entertaining love the what makes it work series merry Christmas mr pete and family and all the best for the new year
That was GREAT! Now run the video in reverse for everyone to see how "Billy Bass Comes To Life". Merry Christmas andHappy New Year to you and your family. I enjoy and learn from every one of your videos, hope they continue for a long, long, time.
Amen on the short life of novelties like this. I just got my Eva a little gnome that wolf-whistles when someone walks in front of him. Not even Christmas, and the "shiny" is already gone. I expect he will end up in the next garage sale (after I have retrieved the batteries).
Excellent mrpete. That's the best gutting and filleting job I have seen for a long time. I like this series very much. Have a great Xmas holiday and a Happy New Year to you and your family. regards from the UK
That was a nice catch, Lyle! The biggest largemouth bass I ever caught was only 10#, but that isn't too shabby for an IL farm pond. Anyway, I would have thought that Jordan would be interested in the gears, motors, and electronic components for some projects since he has you for guidance and inspiration. Unfortunately, far too many of the youth today would rather be playing video games instead of making something cool, which the demise of the shop classes contributes to. I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas!
You can play the songs on youtube, I do it all the time on my other channel. All that happens is you MIGHT lose the ability to monetize the particular video in question. since you don't own the rights to the song. But in this instance I doubt the algorithm will detect your song since they're not the originals. Both the originals were performed by The Talking Heads and Bobby McFerrin respectively.
Wow i am jealous! I am a gemmy collector and i payed like $50 for mine, also my whole family are driven insane by my billy! Also this one is broken, the head is meant to stick out when the mouth moves.
If you pause at the 16:01 minute mark you will see that big black dot of epoxy on the left of the mother board. Under that is the chip that has not only the sound but the programming that controls the whole thing. They epoxy the chip to keep it "protected". Basically so you can't steal the code/music. Fun video!
well i thought they were using servo motors but now i am curious how they protected those DC motors from overcharging for example when the mouth is fully open or the body is fully rotated ; the motor is still on but it doesn't rotate that's why we keep hearing that buzzing sound . i think they are using some current limiting circuit and i need some schematics LOL. by the way ,i think that black thing under the red button is a motion sensor, that's why when you moved your hand over it(at 3:10) or when you flicked your knife it started moving. well , thank you very much for the video : +1
They don't. All they rely on is the fact that the voltage doesn't exceed a value that would make a 'dangerous' amount of current flow through the windings.
All those motor driven mechanical movements can be explained by reading the book Mechanical Movements Devices and appliances by Gardner D Hiscox M E printed in 1917 fifteenth edition.
Ahoyhoy, what I did was cut the back part and then carefully stretch the latex over the endoskeleton so I could put him back together after I was done learning how it works.
I caught a 24 ft grey nurse shark and the thing has taken a supporting wall down with it's thrashing and wiggling. The thing also constantly swears 'f'ing and c'ing' and telling anybody who approaches to 'get stuffed'. I should have thrown it back.
Is there going to be a #12a video titled mrpete222 reassembles Billy the Big Mouth Bass? In all seriousness, thanks for the video and in my opinion the knowledge you shared (gear trains and small motors) are everywhere around us is well worth the 50 cents spent at the garage sale. Looking forward to the next video in the series.
my black and brown wire coming out of motor got separated from billy's circuit board .now i don;t know which wire should be soldered to M1- and M2- (- is negative).will i fry the motor if i connect wires incorrectly..thank you for assistance .Ross
I near split myself watching you skin Billy out with him still flopping around! I hated those things and often wanted to do what you did. Should have the ceremonial flaming burial for the remnants of Billy. Great videos and keep doing what you do.
6:45 And Miles Dyson and his wife from the terminator are sitting on the floor shocked... Joking a side, its clever how the motor movement for the jaw and parts synchronise with the songs
My brother reprograms these. Do a search for "tiger bass band sings radio active" here on RUclips. He's mounted several of them to a wall along with a tiger that was like Billy Bass. He's an absolute genius when doing stuff llike that.

I thought that only one country could make that novelty and you might guess but it begins with C and ends in A, not Texas. Instead of burying Billy why not boil or fry him there,s plenty to go at. Thank you for sharing very amusing video but again very interesting.
A motherboard is a board which has a daughter board associated to her. That looks more like she is an orphanboard. Incidentally I would called it a "mobo" just because it sounds cool, but been a expansionless mobo why not just call it a PCB? ... Boy! It was hard to write all that stuff and avoid the software trying to correct my spelling al every single word. It would have made this comment understandable. Marry Christmas to you Lyle and everyone one else too.
Hopefully the kids will see this video and will take theirs apart. I agree that those things were funny the first time you saw it and gets real annoying shortly afterward. Chris
Lol you won't be copyrighted by billy's music. I've made like 10 videos of it with the sound and haven't get copyrighted ever, but I like the picture with the bass
I have gotten kicked off of RUclips for including certain music in the videos. I have several more brand-new Billy's in the box. II hope the ball one up with a cherry bomb

I think the other "button" on the front switch plate is a motion detector. Actually it is probably a photo-diode which is even cheaper than a motion detector (which can be had for under $10). Blocking the light from it should set the system off. I'll join the chorus of "Oh, don't throw the pieces away," even though (as another 72-year-old) I know that there aren't all that many projects left to do. Maybe one of the projects that IS left might need those little motors and gears. (HA!)
HI Mr. Pete,Great video! Ole' Billy is still pretty annoying even after you cut his vocal chords, however, a drop of super glue in the switch will fix that LOL. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thank you very much for showing me how billy bass works because I am so interested in stuff like this so that I can fix billy and other singing fish.
😄
Love this Lyle! "I'm gonna cut him open from stem to stern here..." Classic!
Thumbs up, The black item you thought was earphones is a motion detector , a cool circuit .
+Robert Perrigo Thanks
Now I know how does the big mouth billy bass fish works
That "earphone Jack" is actually the motion sensor. Another awesome video!
My new favorite how-to fillet a fish video!
+MrGoosePit Thanks
Love your sense of humour! Thanks for the wonderful video.
Mr. Pete that "headphone jack" is actually a sensor and if you turned billy off he could still operate by pressing the red button. The on/off switch only controls the sensor.

Sure hope PETA doesn't see this one. I'm sure they'd find something objectionable!!!
I don't know, this just might be a fish even PETA would want gut after several hours of hearing its nonsense.

Wouldn't be surprised if they did, they would rather a baby die slowly and painfully of a diseasd than a kitten get ran over
