  • ‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬ travels to Oatman, AZ to see this collection of Model A and Model T parts. Merlin knows that he has to have it upon first site and spends a whole week sorting it out. You won't believe what they run into going through one of the sheds! It gets western!

Merlin, As a Ford Model A enthusiast and Vice President of our local Model A Restorers Club, I want to thank you so much for "saving" all of these Model A parts. A lot of the old original parts are getting scarce to find or no longer available.

Maybe 10 years back I stopped on an old farm to ask about possibly buying a 1957 Dodge C.O.E. I saw from waaaaaaay far away on the road. The gentleman that greeted me said if I could find a way to haul it out I could have it. Good sign, right? As he walks me back there to lay eyes on it we walked past his open barn and I totally snapped my neck. The entire barn was PACKED full of those old wooden open top boxes farmers used to gather walnuts.... they're around 4'x4x2' tall. Imagine your typical car guy pipe dream hoard of parts. That's what he had, all of it organised and clean. The gentleman was 95 years old and he still actively raced Model T's!
All these parts were a lifetime of collecting spare parts for his racing hobby. I know my stuff, it was 95% Model T/TT stuff with a sprinkling of A, B, BB.
These crates had piles of cranks in 1 box, blocks in another, heads in another, and so on. Body parts not so much. A spotted a few flathead v8s but his love was the 4s.
In the end I got the C.O.E. for free and to help pay him back I sent him tons of Model T and Model A parts seekers over the years.
The cars are still out there. I'm 40 now. Back when I was 15 (actually picking walnuts on a friend's farm)... it was dad's friend's place. I had to go work the summer in exchange for my first car he gave me. At the end of the day we moved all the crates indoors and my eyes did this 😍 when I spotted a 3 window up in the rafters. That car is still there and hopefully it'll be in my possession soon.
I picked up a 34 Ford truck cab recently. 5 hundo, I threw the money at him and smiled all the way home.
Deals are out there. You just can't expect to find everything on eBay and Craigslist. You have to go network and hunt for it and be ready to strike when the deal finds you.

I’m 37, into 70 to 80 Honda Z50s and what not. I beg my friends if you see something that looks like any of the stuff i have call me.
In this effort i’ve come across a ton of stuff that didn’t apply to me, nothing model A, but i think you understand. I’ve made sure to get whatever the parts were to the people that would appreciate them. Often at no charge if it’s just “hey call x, tell them i sent you”
      This stuff is important.

I remember going to Oatman with my dad in the late 80's.. He was a truck driver, trying to go around the scales. The truck was75 ft long. When we went through the town there was wild donkeys running around, and one ambulance sitting under an old lean - to shed. Figuring out that you couldn't get a truck that big down the trail, he ended up turning the truck around up by the old abandoned mines. I remember looking down over the side of the mountain from the passenger window and seeing a sheer drop about a mile down. Made me sick to my stomach.

I joke that I run the town's hardware store, but it's usually not a joke. I usually have what they need or a workaround to patch them up before a proper repair can be made. And if I don't have it, I end up buying double and find a home for stuff in my 24x24 mini shop. Having stuff on hand can save a two hour trip to town, so it's worth it in my mind.

I don't want to run it without going through the fluids at least. I know it has a fuel leak so we never used to keep it full but just enough to run around the neighborhood for fun. About the only mechanical change years ago was to put in an alternator instead of the generator.
