  • With only a week to go before we flip the canoes, we need the final bulkhead finished and ready to install into the hulls. So, that was our focus this week, getting Big Bertha finished! So, join Admiral Marianne, Captain Blood, and our XO, Brian as we get this boat built and ready to circumnavigate planet Earth on the sailboat we built, a Schionning Designs Solitaire 1520, a fifty foot long performance/cruising catamaran.

    When your first video came out, I thought to myself, who are these weirdos, and what are they doing? But as it turns out, I'm the weirdo who enjoys watching your build. Thanks for going through all of your building procedures. I find it very entertaining and informative.

      We agree, we are weirdos, or at least a little insane, but I'm famous for my insane ideas. Wait until we start sailing, more insanity to follow! But we're glad you are enjoying the process of building S/V Lynx.

    Given you aren't allowed to put that large tent up, maybe you should develop a roof you can put over each canoe once you flip them. Just make sure to make it modular so you can add your bulkheads. Since the bulkheads would be leak points, be sure each canoe can have a sump.

      We built some temporary covers, but these won't be needed for very long. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    400 lbs, that was a surprise.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  4 месяца назад +1

      It was a guess. When Brian and I had it standing up, we tried to lift it and could just get it off the ground. I know I can lift 200 pounds so that had to be close. With two of us trying, that's 400 pounds, or thereabouts.

    Well done so far will the bulk head fit ?. I would have fitted the bulk head first then added the extra layers of fibreglass strengtheners. A shed with a level floor would have made the job a lot easier. Anyway keep the good work.

    What’s a rough cost for the hull?

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  4 месяца назад

      I don't really know. Since the parts for the canoes all came as part of the larger catamaran kit, I don't really have a cost breakdown for one hull.

    Is the plan to glue the cabin top in or just temporarily attach it? Id imagine it would difficult getting the cabin top and bulk heads all in place on layout without a sole to walk around on. Going to have to borrow a lot of ladders.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  4 месяца назад +1

      Thd cabin top will be raised on extensions, not glassed in yet. We will finish the interior walls before that happens.

    Great progress and fantastic work rate. Just a comment about the rudder stock and the rudder tube. If I understand you correctly you are intending to manufacture your own rudder tube. Why do you not just buy a GRP tube in and then modify it to your needs (more external wraps of GRP to increase wall thickness to requirement) and you are going to have to do the housing to hull structural webs anyway. Certainly in U.K. GRP tubing is small beer probably around $60 per metre.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  Месяц назад +1

      We aren't building our own rudder tubes, just a tube that holds two bushings that hold the aluminum rudder tubes. These tubes we make have to be a specific diameter for the bushings.

      @@SailingSVLynx Yet here I am watching the first section of Episode 6 where you repeatedly say you are building rudder tubes.🤣

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  Месяц назад +1

      @@normanboyes4983 Yeah, tubes that hold the rudder bearings would have been far more accurate.

    I am rapidly catching up on the vids! Your comments about the rudder hardware spares does reveal a downside to building your own boat. Things like the rudders or dagger boards are difficult to replace without building your own. Not an attractive prospect in the middle of a voyage.

    • @SailingSVLynx
      @SailingSVLynx  Месяц назад

      Well, think about this... if we purchased an HH, those curved carbon fiber daggerboards must cost 20k or more, then they have to be shipped to your location, with import duties and taxes, not to mention the ridiculous size of those things! It would be much cheaper just to hire a local builder to make us a new daggerboard or rudder for our boat out are just foam and glass. The shaft of the rudder is the harder to make part, which is why we are bringing a spare with us. The daggerboards are simple enough to make.
