Long ago in the far away land of ancient Greece there was a golden age of powerful gods and extraordinary heroes; gods like the hot tempered god of the Underworld Hades. As a hilarious villain with immense power and an immortal life, Hades was another Disney villain who grew in popularity and become a hallmark for the Disney villains franchise, allowing him to even become the main villain in the Disney World interactive game Sorcerer’s of the Magic Kingdom, and I am sure if he was here he would be flattered by my remarks. But what was he like in Greek mythology? Did he try other ways to take Mount Olympus from Zeus in the Disney version?
I post every Tuesday and Thursday, so check back then for more Disney, Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and movie videos! If you have any questions about the Disney universe that you would want answered in a video, please ask away in the comment section!

You forgot to mention how Hades was actually the first son and had the birth right to rule Olympus, but was tricked by Zeus into ruling the underworld instead. Makes you rethink the Disney version.

He was the eldest brother (fun fact: all the girls were older than the boys) in the mythology, but the animated series states multiple times that he's the youngest brother... I don't know why Disney changed that tbh, maybe to make it more plausible for Zeus to be the 'good' guy. (man I hate Zeus haha)

Hades usually keeps to himself in the original mythology. When people complain about him kidnapping Persephone, they tend to forget that kidnapping your "future wife" was common in those times. The one time he was acting out of sorts was when Theseus(the one who kidnapped Helen) and Pirithous thought that they could take off with Persephone. They go down to the underworld, being greeted by a not too happy Hades. He invites them to his dinner table, and as soon as they sit down, giant snakes pin them to their chairs and Hades sicks the Furies on them for trying to take Persephone.
So yeah, Hades does his job. He isn't evil, he doesn't meddle in the affairs of mortals, and he's loyal to his partner. Unlike his brother Zeus who couldn't keep it in his toga.

Zeus is actually credited with helping Hades kidnap his own daughter in some versions. He only sides with Demeter when the Earth itself suffers during her time of grief.

There are some versions of the myth which say Persephone just found the Underworld and didn't want to leave. Hades agreed to let her stay and eventually married her. Also,Persephone was much cruler than her husband in the myths

Hmm if I recall correctly, Persephone was kidnaped and tricked into eating Pomegranate seeds in the underworld which caused her to be imprisoned, but your all right Hades did treat her very well and gave Orpheus a chance to get his wife back. So if you ask me he was a pretty fair God and treated his wife very well and was totally faithful to her and I think he was more of a judge and determined to keep the balance between life and death.

Yeah. But, Zeus is the one who freed his siblings from Kronos, giving him an admittedly unfair upper hand at the negotiating table. The only reason he was the one freeing his siblings is because it took Rhea multiple children being eaten alive by their father to think "Hey, maybe I should switch them out with a fake!"

    • @emilydolores6458
      @emilydolores6458 7 лет назад +11

It WAS purely circumstantial that Zeus ended up being the 'hero' (which he really isn't, he is a ginormous prick. He raped any woman he wanted, used his power flippantly, etc.)
And, actually, as far as most versions go, the lottery of what god was gonna be what was decided by which stick they pulled out from a proverbial bag. That was Zeus' idea too. Fitting with the fact that he was the youngest, he was also the most immature. Other stories go that he tricked Hades into deciding on the underworld.

I like the myth version of Hades better. He seems like a much nicer guy there. Sure, he kidnapped Persephone, but back then it was okay. He helped Orpheus reunite with his dead wife, it's not his fault Orpheus did that ONE THING Hades told him not to. I think he did fall in love with two nymphs, but it only lasted, like, five seconds before he chose Persephone over them.
And you know Cerberus might actually mean Spot? The Lord of the Underworld named his three-headed hellhound Spot. Awesome.

I like this video, but there is one factual inaccuracy. Hades isn't the embodiment of death, he's the ruler of the Underworld. Thanatos was the Greek embodiment of Death. As for Hades himself, he was given the Underworld, because after the Gods defeated the Titans, Zeus, Posiden, and Hades all drew straws to determine which realms they would rule. Hades drew the short straw, because Zeus cheated. However, he was a God of his word and took over the Underworld without complaint, and managed it well. He was one of the few Gods who actually did his job, did it well, and did it without whining about it.

The things what Zeus did were cheating on Hera with other women in which caused a conflict.

Leslie Lemerond It's because he is associated with death, which human beings naturally fear and view as dark.
The Underworld included all parts of the afterlife, including the Greek mythological counterparts to Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell. Modern popular culture simplified it into simply the most miserable parts because it's more "dramatic", and coupling this with any association with death makes for the perfect cookie-cutter insta-villain.

Actually the myth of Hercules has Hera as the bad guy because Zeus had sex with Hercules's mother while his actual father was off fighting in a war and he returned after his wife had 5 days of being with the disguised Zeus and Hera found out that Zeus was trying to have a ruler over the kingdom that the mortal family of Hercules was on. Zeus had impregnated a lot of women and whoever was born first would be the king over that land. Zeus wanted Hercules to be the ruler but Hera prevented Hercules's mom from giving birth until another child was born before Hercules. Hera was outside their house chanting for the birth to be delayed until then. A maid of the house noticed Hera and began distracting her from preventing the birth but by the time Hercules was born, his cousin(from Zeus) was already born and Hercules had a twin paternal brother. Hercules's father had sex with his wife after the fact that Zeus left after 5 days of constant sex. Hera sent a pair of snakes to kill Hercules the baby. The twin was crying but Hercules wasn't and he killed the snakes by the time their parents came. So Hercules's cousin became king of the land and Hercules didn't. Hercules one day saved a woman from a centar I believe or something and she was married to him and her name was Megara and they had 2 kids together. One day Hercules was hallucinating because of Hera that his king cousin was trying to take his family or kill them and he ended up killing his family himself which is obviously a heinous crime so he went to the temple of Delphi to repent and the priestess told him he had to serve his King, his cousin, and take the name Glory of Hera, Hercules/Heracles, which is ironic because Hera is trying to make his life miserable or kill him and he is suppose to be someone who represents Hera. And then the king enacts the 10 trials to Hercules and it is strictly service for 13 years or somewhere aroind there. Half were to be in Greece and the rest was outside Greece, like Europe area and Africa and Middle East. But he messed up 2 trials so he had to do 2 more to compensate which became the 12 Trials of Hercules.

and Heracles/Hercules his original name was Alcides was originally going to be King of Mycenae as due to his divine birth right and his divine heritage, but Hera took that all away and gave it to the puppet king eurystheus

Professor Coldheart That's true I also had a problem with how they portrayed Hades in the movie, but then again the movie wasn't very good to begin with seen as it didn't completely follow the books story line and even took out characters. I can understand some thing being taken out but then to change important scenes and take out consistent characters just ruined the movie for me.(By the sorry for the mini rant) :P

I wouldn't mind that as much but can you imagine if they took Snape or Sam from LotR and made them a villain right from the get go? I mean movies can't possibly include every little thing but at least get line ups right. Regardless, I agree and understand. It's good to vent a little from time to time so no worries.

In the myths,Herakles/Hercules actually married and had three kids with her. Unfortunately, Hera, pissed that Zeus cheated on her with and impregnated a mortal yet again, tricked him into drinking poison that made him see his family as ravenous daemons and kill them! That`s why the gods made him mortal in the actual myths!

My favorite iteration of Hades was how he appeared in the 2009 animated Wonder Woman movie. That portrayal was truest to the original Greek mythology. He wasn’t a villain. He was a facilitator who manipulated people into getting his way instead of being confrontational as he’s usually (inaccurately) portrayed in the media these days.

In Greek mythology Zeus promise his dautter persefoni to his brother Hades , but her mother didnt know what her brother/ husband did . Hades took persefoni to the underworld . Hades sometimes appears as a bad and selfish god because he belive he holds the life of the humans and sometimes appears as a good god and brother living alone with the dead. But it was so many times he tried to take thebplace of his brother zeus with many tricks.

I would have to say Hades is by far an amazing character. Although I prefer to see him as a fair and just Judge but myself personally I prefer the tellings from Author, Sherrilyn Kenyon's books the Dark Hunters series. In her version of the "Capture of Persephone", Hades and Persephone had actually bumped into each a few times. At first Hades wanted to trick Persephone into living with him and keeping her ransom for Zeus.
As time went by and the God of Death got to know the young Goddess, he began to fall in love with her. Refusing to keep her hostage, Hades told her his plan and let her go. With a broken heart, Hades thought he'd never see her again since the other Gods were appalled by the Oldest Olympian God. Now while she was in the Underworld, Hades did treat her with compassion and respect so when he told her she was his hostage, Persephone didnt even realize she was being held captive. She merely thought he was treating her as a guest.
She saw how lonesome and cold he was and so she promised to visit him. Every now and then, Hades would go to Earth and talk with Persephone whenever she could escape her mother Demeter. Now just like in Mythology, Demeter was frantic and worrisome when Persephone left the world to live in the Underworld. Demeter searched the world but little did she know that while she searched the world, Persephone had agreed to marry Hades and become his queen.
When Hermes when to the Underworld, Hades was furious at the news but knowing how much the humans mattered to Persephone, he told his bride she had to return. Heartbroken and devastated, she picked up the pomegranate which was the fruit of the Underworld and swallowed the seeds. Knowing that however many seeds she swallowed, she would have to stay in the Underworld. After taking in the 3rd seed, Demeter went down herself and snatched her daughter back before she could eat any more.
When Zeus was told what had happened, he ordered that Demeter respect the laws and that Persephone would return for three months down to the Underworld and even tried for once to help his brother. Saying that Persephone was old enough to leave her mother's side, take a husband, and that she would be not only a Goddess but a queen of an endless kingdom. Unfortunately Demeter demanded that her beautiful daughter remain by her side. To all Hades is seen as the equivalent of a grumpy mean old man yet for his wife, he is the kindest and most loyal man alive, which is big since let's face it, none of the Gods are loyal. Hades is the only one who remains faithful and loving. When its time for Persephone to return, he lavishes her with gifts and finery. He treats her like the Queen she is and she adores her husband and helps him find his more gentle and less harsh side.

"heroes like Hercules, Odysseus, Perseus, and Theseus..." a lot of "eus's"
also the embodiment of death itself was Thanatos, brother to Hypnos and son of Nyx, goddess of night. The gods were also not given their realms, but they kinda did a rock paper scissors kind of thing (so it was random) but seemingly fit their personalities. Persephone was originally Kore, "maiden", until Hades kidnapped her (some stories say it was Zeus's idea *cough* Percy Jackson's Greek Gods *cough*) and she changed her name to Persephone. Also, Cerberus was actually Kerberos, which derived from a (I think Persian) word for "spot". And he's Nico and Bianca's dad. I'm out

I see Hades more of a quiet, introverted shy dough who is basically the only "Lawful Good" god. He seldom gets angry or mad, but when he does, he seriously blows up (his usually black spiky hair turns into blue fire)
He gets most of his confidence when he's around his wife; Persephone, who's basically Isabela Madrigal and she ran-away to the Underworld with him. I like to think that Hades didn't kidnap Persephone. But both of them had a chat after meeting each other for the first time by some river bank. Persephone opens up to Hades about how Demeter essentially kept her shut up in her room on Olympus and forced her to be the "perfect golden girl" since birth, and that that was her first day on Earth. Hades says that he wishes he had the confidence like all the other gods. They then have a "Love Is An Open Door"-esque musical number. They then end-up in the Underworld after going over a waterfall in a log boat. They get wed and rest of the story plays out the same as the actual myth, except Persephone ate some of the pomegranate seeds on her own choice whilst Hades was helping Charon ferry the dead across the Styx
Persephone gives Hades confidence and Hades gives Persephone freedom to be her wild self

He only did it because of Persephone's sleazebag father and overprotective mother.

James Woods did a masterful job of making Hades a perfect characterization of an immortal used-car salesman.

At first, when I first saw Hades, I thought he was a villain, then later on as I got older I learned more and Now I think he is just a strict ruler/judge.

one thing that gets me, the TV series takes place during Hercules's training, but in the movie, Hades thinks he's dead at this point, while in the series they interact on a regular basis.

Hades is like the nicest guy in Greek mythology, but every Greek mythology media he's the main antagonist!

I love Hades. Always have and always will. People think Hades as evil and bad is just beyond me. Sure he's the lord of the Underworld. Death goes wherever he goes but hey, one of the many good things about the man is that he's faithful to his wife, Persephone.

I do see Hades more of a strict judge myself, but I can't help but love James Woods' portrayal of Hades

Hades is actually the most honest and fair god in greek mythology. I mean he always sticks to his deals and remains faithful to Persephone. He is the oldest brother of Zues which makes him the rightful ruler and Zues swindled him leaving him stuck with the worst job. So he gets pretty lonely and bitter so that is the main reason he goes after Persephone because he kinda just wants to settle down and get the girl by this point. Demeter refuses to give him her daughters hand so Hades ends up taking Persephone with him anyway because he has no one. At first Demeter wants revenge but Helios tells her no seriously Hades is the only one who keeps his promises and is the most faithful man in Olympus. Considering Demeter was ready to let all of humanity die due to starvation and her being the harvest goddess over her daughter Zues intervened and suggested that she would get her daughter back every few months. So Hades was like ok you drive a hard bargain but she can stay with her mother every few months.

My favorite version of Hades/Pluto will always be Rick Riordan's version in all the Percy Jackson books. I see this fictional character as a strict, somewhat lonesome judge who did care for things other than himself, and, while sometimes bitter about people stereotyping him, he had an overall kind heart and soul. The gods of Olympus had made him an outsider because his roll and main residence in the mythological universe was rather undesirable, making actual praise and love towards him almost alien. The gods, including his own brothers, Zues and Poseidon, almost never paid attention to Hades while he spent most of his time dealing with the ever-growing size of the Underworld's population. Even Persephone, goddess of spring and Hades wife, had to be tricked into staying in the Underworld for half of the year after she had decided to leave the Lord of the Dead for the sunlight and flowers of the upper world.

Hades was also in the most recent book of the series the Dresden File. Modern fantasy with Chicago's only Professional Wizard. Part of the plot involved having to sneak into the Vault of Hades, and the protagonist has a meeting with him during one of the major scenes. He is a very calm guy just doing his job. And his dog Cerberus was there as a easy going pet, where they discover the meaning of the name of Cerberus, which google provides here- Meaning, origin and history of the name Cerberus. Latinized form of the Greek Κερβερος (Kerberos), which possibly meant "spotted"

Zeus is like the bossy and smart brother, hades is like the misunderstood and funny brother who starts conflicts often, and Poseidon is the cute and naive brother who overlooks the conflicts hades start, and Hercules is the heroic nephew.

I am really obsessed with Greek mythology so I have read all of the Percy Jacksons and I've studied it as much as I can. Hades isn't a villain per se, just a god who doesn't appear on Mount Olympus very often. He does have a throne in Mount Olympus if I'm recalling my studies correctly. He's definitely a judge because he has to judge each soul to see which part of the Underworld they belong to. So yeah there's that.
