Incidents in the Drakensberg are not common, but they do happen. Best advice is to go in a largish group, camp out of sight of a the local population, don't leave anything outside the tent or even in the vestibule. There is no specific trail. Be friendly to the herders, share some food, carry cigarettes to hand out as a gesture of goodwill. Beware of their dogs, they are not pets. There are several passes to access the escarpment, from easy to very hard. Don't worry too much about safety, just use common sense. Be prepared for severe storms in spring or any time really.
