The fabulous Rick Beato just got the elusive David Gilmour to do an interview. A proper musical analysis with no probing PF questions. A must see for any fan.
Beato yes it was a great interview filmed after his MSG dates in New York.
Good interview
What a nice thing for Rick to completely ignore D Gilmours wife sitting right there , the lyrical genious behind much of his songs! Rick who?
Waters was a self-absorbed dick. If he didn't feel like doing Pink Floyd any longer, he should have retired and let everyone else (who wanted to continue) keep playing. Talented megalomaniac who alienated all the people who'd helped him become rich and famous. Some of PF's best songs were created after Waters left so, take that.
@@weddingwiththewhitedove She was never much interested in all that, and the fact that she choosing to sit out of the camera should tell you whose decision this is. What an odd comment btw.
I am now 48 years old and have been listening to Pink Floyd almost daily for more than 30 years. In recent years, I have been listening to Gilmour in his amazing live performances, most recently in Rome, New York, and the Royal Albert Hall a few days ago. I also listen to Waters’ concerts as well, and I would like to say that Every member of Pink Floyd is a legend that will never be repeated, in addition to the genius Syd Barrett, who I hoped would continue with them.. In the end I would like to thank them all ❤️
Best documentary on Dave I have ever seen. Thanks.
I probably wouldn't the same today without Pink Floyd's music : Incredible Music, Incredible Words, Incredible experience ! Thanks to life for this band !
David's Sound has always come thru his fingers. He could play a 2X4 with .010 to .046 nailed into it and you would know that Gilmore is playing. His voicing and character is Unmatched. He always had a splendid Feel for The Music. Pink Floyd Had Me at Piper and Saucer but Meddle .. Umma Gumma, Animals...No wonder why half the people I interact with are wearing that Logo. A Beam of Light Through a Prism. Unapologetically Genuine. Unforgettably Real. ( did I mention Pompeii?) Love you dudes!
David gilmour number one for all time ❤👍👌
I first heard Pink Floyd when I was in high school in 1969. I heard "Interstellar Overdrive" on the Beaker Street with Clyde Clifford radio show on KAAY Little Rock, Arkansas. It ran from 11pm to 2am every night. Clyde played everything you would never hear on regular radio stations. I live in a small Kansas town so when I first heard Beaker Street I was hooked immediately. I ordered a lot of my albums from a paint store that had an ordering catalog on which you could find any album that ever was. "White Bird" by "It's A Beautiful Day" was a mainstay on Beaker Street. I had never heard a song quite like that. Very interesting. I eventually bought every Floyd album there was. It was very enjoyable listening to Pink Floyd's progression through their albums until the Dark Side Of The Moon masterpiece that was on the Billboard Top 200 albums for 15 years. Incredible. I'll never forget the Sunday I had some 12 Fort Riley soldiers in my upstairs apartment ( I have no idea how I ended up with that many people in my apartment ) smoking grass and listening to DSOTM over and over. LOL!!
There are many great guitarist out there and many no longer with us (RIP Jimi) David may not be the fastest or the best but what sets David Gilmore apart is his expressiveness with the guitar how he plays notes he makes his guitar sing to you. His guitar playing thru a song especially those solos he belts out its like listening to someone singing. Which to me is something very very special in a guitarist.
As far as I’m concerned David is the best.
I think “Animals” was a masterpiece. Rick says it wasn’t his favorite album but thought he played well on it. I think it was glaringly obvious that Roger took control of the band at this point and it’s actually a surprise that they lasted long enough to even make “The Wall”.
Many thanks for this interview to Mister David Gilmour with your its a great moment.....
Great documentary, thank you so much for sharing!
Love this band and Thanks you for uploading this some scenes I've not seen before, this is great Cheers!
Umma Gumma was the first album i bought from PF. It was great to hear " Be careful with that axe Eugene" live on stage.
“Once you bought that album, you were hooked “ was so true for me! 50 years of Pink Floyd and still my number one at the age of almost 63!
If you haven’t watched this and love Floyd this is a MUST SEE!!!!
Appreciate ya. Thanks for sharing.
Best band ever!
Awesome! Thank You!! That was a great documentary. What I particularly liked was the balance. It didn't seem to me to be biased - which is very easy to do when talking about PF. Whatever you may think about Waters, he is/was a great lyricist and genius of Gilmore, Mason, Write in the essentail melodies and production would prove that the sum was always greater. I loved every second of this vid. Thanks again.
Aahh.. I missed the Bib Harris and Norman Smith sections of the documentary but it was a wonderful piece all the same.. giving all sides of the story, as much as that is possible without going into all out war LOL. Thank you.
Sounds very hollow when those talking heads go on about The Division Bell doesn't have strong songs. Some of Pink Floyd's best ones ever are on that album. High Hopes is fantastic for instance.
Poles Apart is such a beautiful history of the band.
Great video! I have to say that I agree with just about all of the people that contributed to the video.
Needs a part 2 but just based on his solo music and albums without the Pink Floyd back story just the man himself and his music
David Gilmour il vero leader dei mitici Pink Floyd…❤❤❤
I thought I knew everything about Pink Floyd which is why I was so surprised that David Gilmour taught Syd Barrett how to play the guitar. I knew they both knew each other before Pink Floyd and they used to play together at times when they were able to get together.
There’s the Syd era, then there’s the Gilmour era tbh. Waters storytelling was only made palatable by Gilmours melodies and solos.
I’m a huge Gilmour fan, but without Waters lyrics and musical contribution from 72-77 there’s no peak Floyd period.
@@ThomasAlanRugg79. Don’t forget The Wall haha. And obviously the Gilmour/Waters debate is so futile and stupid, they are both super talented. And let’s not forget Mason and Wright that are silently as important as Waters and Gilmour.
@@ThomasAlanRugg Yes - his solo efforts post PF don't have the abrasive edge that crazy Roger provided. A bit too wishy-washy for my taste - his wife's lyrics,
You say it as if it's actually true, great work
@@santiagosalas4037 Mason and Wright were always in Pink Floyd, they never left. There’s really no denying that Gilmour’s guitar work is what took Pink Floyd to the next level. Waters is a personality and I love him. But there’s a reason the rest of the band carried on without him.
Great Gilmore. Very good document. The constant need to ignore Wright is surprising, even when talking about the good WYWH!!
Gilmour… 🙄
Gilmour. Repeated to bang it home.
when the words are the important often the music suffers
To my ears, Animals is Pink Floyd's "guitar album", where David shines the most.
PERFECT ❤😊🎉
Roger Waters songs are about 3 things:
War
Mental Health
School & Institutions
-or-
how mental health is a result of war and/or school- Let's Dance...
Nice doc, but Animals deserves more respect. Gilmour rips in it.
The thing I don‘t get is it was like "Right lads, that was fun but now let‘s make one of the most important albums of all time"
In the first minute, Flaming is mentioned as being from the second album.
It is on the first.
29:05 - I agree! In my opinion, the WYWH album was better than the DSOTM album. It is my favorite album of all time.
31:54 - and I agree again. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is my personal favorite of anything Pink Floyd has ever done.
appreciate the insight shared on David Gilmour's trepidation on the first post-Waters Pink Floyd album. A lot of work went into it, and despite the criticism it's a great album. considering the huge leap away from Waters, it deserves the Pink Floyd label, as does all the other post-Waters albums made. Final Cut should have been a Waters album only. regardless of his abilities and talent, roger waters became a person no one could work with anymore. Megalomaniac unfortunately. How the story unfolded is a good lesson for anyone who gets too full of themselves and think they are everything.
There is one other era everyone forgets and never mentions and that is the bob close era and dam they were good then as a band check out the bob close era of floyd David uses him on his solo albums as a back up still today in studio
Seen Floyd 4 Times, About Face..
Momentary Lapse 10/30/1987, Tampa, my Favorite😅
❤
Cool doc. A shame that the Dark Side & Wish You Were Here era was never fully captured on film.
I wanted to reply to a lot of the above comments, but you make a good point. The are so many bands that you just wish you were there to be a fly on the wall. And THAT era will never be repeated. Oh for a time machine!
DSOTM we are in this together
WYWH Roger needs David
Animals Roger asserts control
The Wall David just needs to do his parts
Post Wall Roger thinks I can just get whatever guitarist
Roger is partly traumatized by his childhood, but also a bit of an egomaniac. A brilliant asshole with a huge chip on his shoulder. Without him, Pink Floyd lost it’s edge but whereas Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell were basically an evolution of Gilmour’s more optimistic approach to music with a few new classics like High Hopes and Sorrow, Waters’ solo endeavors were bleak and full of pathos (but not bad by any stretch of the imagination, mind you); Mix them together and you have PF of the seventies.
I think Dave's daughter Romany could pull off Echoes...with her dad..
I think she can pull it off
Can anyone tell me what the tune is at the end during the credits please?
Cool documentary but booring with all this advertisements every 5 minutes. Sorry you tube, it's a shame.
Huh? Flaming was on Piper at the Gates of Dawn, not A Saucerful of Secrets.
"20 years ago" and another 20 goes passed
48:00 Gilmour really missed the point of The Wall in that it’s not Waters blaming everyone else for his problems outright but that he’s at fault for allowing himself to blame others for all his failings. It’s literally the point of “Stop”, “The Trial”, and “Outside The Wall” that Pink (or Waters) is putting himself of blast for being such a hypocrite and building the wall in the first place
It seems that Roger experienced his own breakdown and personal catharsis of sorts in processing his trauma through Animals and The Wall. And that really cleft the band in twain with Roger on his own and the rest of the band were left with no choice but to 'look on', almost a reflection of Barrett's slip.
Roger became lost within his own process it seems, almost possessed of sorts by his vision and this left almost no room for any other artist to contribute meaningfully in that process. I have immense love and respect for Roger's artistry and poetry, but it's clear looking back that he was not really capable of working with others as artists by the time The Wall came along, he seemed to see the other members of Floyd as tools to be used and not fellow artists... and that would simply never be sustainable with the likes of Gilmour, Wright and Mason, nor any self respecting and accomplished masters of craft.
And I'm grateful that it played out as it did... the shift in Floyd and the eventual arrival of Polly as lyricist brought yet another dimension and evolution to one of the most piercing bands of all time.
And now, Gilmour still piercing us with his melodic soaring and Polly's poetry in his solo ventures. What a time to be alive! Saw him and brought my Son on this most recent tour and my Son is now exploring the entire history with me...
The orch’a ‘killer whale sounds’ you hear on meddle during (echo’s) is wha wha pedal plugged in the wrong way, backwards. Hendrix did on 6 was 9
Floyd were always best when they worked together as a band, they always were greater that the sum of their parts, for me none of the solo albums stand on par with what they did as a band, each of them contributed something special which I don't think they could replicate when working alone; you just have to see the reaction of the fans in live gigs when a Floyd number begins rather than a solo one.
Im offended that someone in this document said that Comfortable numb is the only good piece on The wall. All of it is genius but of course Comfortable numb is the best if you have to choose.
I’m glad other people are recognizing the decline of Pink Floyd and the disappointment of the The Wall and The Final Cut. It was all Roger’s doing by controlling everything. I know some people like these albums, but they never appealed to me. I’ve always been on Team Gilmour/Wright. You could see the connection between those two. I was so glad to see Floyd move on without Waters and succeed.
I couldn’t imagine anyone considering The Wall a disappointment whatsoever. The Final Cut is disappointing only when considered as a follow up to The Wall which was a monumental achievement in rock. The Wall and The Final Cut to a lesser extent explore the great collective trauma of a generation that grew up in the shadow of the western world’s creation myth while also tearing down the personal demons of its writer in a brutally honest fashion all while wrapped in some of the most beautifully expressive compositions recorded to tape. I genuinely believe it’s one of the greatest works of art of the 20th century
Sensing Buttercups? Dandelions? Okay, if they say so. That’s silly stuff.
😮😅
wow Gilmore is great but in minute 35 - the guitarist Doyle Bramhall II touring with Waters in 2001 - with the 180 strat naturally strung blew my mind as well.
It's sad how much Gilmour leaves out Roger Waters' name, especially because he would take things Gilmour would be messing with unseriously, and then write a song around and say "Hey, what's that?" but now (Rick Beato's interview), he says "It's usually other people who inquire" - yeah, Roger every time... Shine On You Crazy Diamond.. Wish You Were Here. Read interviews before 1985 and you'll see the full truth.
Yeah, that’s just the British way. And what’s the truth anyway? Ambiguous at best. These men have grown so far apart and that really is the only sad thing as they complemented each other’s art like no other.

Roger was always destined to be a rock star. He has the drive and the vision that no one else in Pink Floyd had. Richard and Nick had great fortune to end up in Pink Floyd, little would be different as far as Pink Floyd music goes had they been different members. David Gilmour as good as he is on guitar may or may not have become a world famous guitarist. There are a LOT of brilliant guitarists out there who are not household names. His songwriting is far from the best and same for his singing, he would not have been known as a standout lead vocalist to make him famous just on that. And he certainly does not have a genius musical vision as Roger has to blast him into super stardom. I think Dave would have ended up being a successful musician in a lesser band fulfilling the same role as guitarist, co-lyricist, co-singer. We would still have Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Where Here, Animals, The Wall and Final Cut regardless of who Roger would have teamed up with. As a side, the exact same applies to The Doors and Jim Morrison.
Roger’s middle name is George are you sure it’s not you Roger.
Это я к Danny!
im sorry, but, in all seriousness, Dick Parry should have been officially signed as a full member of the floyd, hes there even on live 8 reunion, and after with dave and rick,,,as far as im concerned,,, HE IS/WAS /HAS ALWAYS BEEN a member of the floyd,,,he is to sax, what dave is to guitar ,rick/keys, nick/drums, roger /concept/lyrics, syd /vision/expression
I think, like Rick, it was better to remain a contracted artist. Financially.
Why when they are talking about how great gilmours guitar was on dogs and then you show Doyle Bramhall playing it.
My thoughts exactly! There might not be any footage of him playing it but of all the footage to use they use a guy who is playing with Roger 🤨
@@rapsody9546Doyle ain’t no slouch, luckily
there r no videos of Gilmour playing these incredible solos, so they choose to put what they have, even if its not the true artist. i would prefer a picture of Gilmour, its right.
Because he’s better ? 🤐 shh
The Wall was the best although Animals side 2 is a close second
Floyd didn't become Floyd until Gilmour joined. Respect to Barrett and all that but the Floyd that became the gamechanger didn't start until Echoes. Because I believe, of Gilmour.
Yeh, If Syd hadn't have gone nuts, We wouldn't have DSOTM or WYWH.
If Nick Drake hadn't done himself in we wouldn't have Solid Air. Silver linings of the human condition I guess.
Long live Syd barret
pink were better without sid imho
Um...Jeff Beck please for Strat heroes
loved jeff he was something else rip jeff
The accent doest fkn fool me. Floyd rules!
Floyd would not have existed without Sid. Equally, Dark Side would not have been written with Sid. By extension we would not have got Wish You Were Here nor The Wall. Things happen for a reason.
I own Syd era Pink Floyd, but I find it hard to enjoy…but then again I don’t take drugs. They were young, experimenting (musically) and taking drugs, just not a fan.
Right off the bat, the documentary gets the song credit wrong. Flaming was released on Piper not Saucerful. Hand smack to the forehead.
I think waters was good, by throwing a melting pot of ideas at the rest in a confused fashion, Gilmour on the other hand, tightened it all up and then shone on stage.
Syd committed Commercial suicide.
I think Syd saw through the cult of persona and ego in a manner that left him unable to sustain the illusory aspects of social institutional gamesmanship. He lost the anchor of self and could not recover in a way that allowed him to participate in the game of humans. As one who's had glimpses of this myself, I see how tenuous and fragile personality can be to sustain. It's a knife edge to maintain... I wish him peace.
Guitarist forget everything they got from Hendrix. NO ONE played ‘double stops’ rhythm blues chops like Hendrix. Hendrix listened to muddy waters, but took everything up another notch. Learn one song from axis bold as love. Not just intro complete one song ( even Noel Reddings (two chords) whimcycle bubble psych. Guitarist before Hendrix did not play (double stops) like Jimi. It seems the ones who do appreciate Hendrix are Guthrie govan, Shawnlane, Steve vai, Satriani, mahogany rush, uli jon Roth. All the elites. Who learned from axis bold as love. Because axis bold as love sucks. The original recording was stolen (back in 67 before its release) Mitch ,Noel and Jimi had to re-record most of tracks in ONE day. Mitch later said ‘the feel was gone’ . Had it been up to Jimi he would NOT released. The experience would’ve Waited until sound (feel) was right. But not chad, Chad believed everything recorded one take. Packaged sold. So people are happy with mediocrity, failure from lack of originality
You are a drug addict?
Not saying you’re wrong by any means but save it for a commentary on HENDRIX!!!!
Absolutely!
Well said mate!
@@thomasmoroney1079 disagree entirely mate... you're not the comment police. This is a piercing insight into Gilmour via the influence of Hendrix on him and others of his ilk.
These 6000 notes a minute kids nowadays are so lifeless and boring
...and yet PF is still touring in 2023
Really? Gilmour disbanded and said no Rick no Floyd!
Pink Floyd hasn’t toured since 1994
There is no Pink Floyd without Waters.
Yes there is: 3 albuns 👌
An average guitar player riding on the wave of a bass players creativity😀
Just about everyone agrees that Gilmour is a way above average guitarist. On the other hand, Waters was hardly even a bassist. He had other people playing a lot of the bass parts on the albums, including Gilmour.
A boring, guitar driven band.
And your band has done what?
@@msh6865 Would you ask a critic of a newspaper or tv-station the same question? - And by the way: We all know that primitive music is way more successful than ambitious one. Ask Frank Zappa for example. I wouldn´t say that Floyd was primitive, of course. I only wanted to point out the tendency.
