  • Since I've been working on my own switch turns and making them better by using this technique I figured I'd make a vid showing it in depth a bit more than I have in some of my previous tutorials. Hope it can help some others improve their regular and switch carved turns too!

    Dude. I started working as an instructor last year and the "veteran instructors" can't explain what you just did. You explained and showed the concept of what they call "flex extension" better than any instructor I've talked to.

    Thank you! Ryan again. Pleased with very successful camera angles.
    For me, this is one of the favorite styles in carving, when in every turn energy is accumulated to jump into the next turn. Of course, the effort goes more than evenly cutting the curves, but what a thrill!

    Awesome video man and super helpful! Someone who’s new (like myself) really appreciates the side by side comparison and can TOTALLY grasp the importance now of having that lower center of gravity and a mean squat

    Oh yeah they mention you every once in a while. I have been watching yours and Kevin's channels for a while. I took a lot from your how to really really really carve videos. I still have to work on the full euro style carve a bit. But the first part where you talk about a silent upper body was awsome. It changed my riding.

    Super helpful video. We've had some crappy snow so I got out and tried the things you mentioned in this video. Bent knees and forward lean. I could feel the edges hooking up a lot better. The turns felt like I was snapping out of them way better. Even on my little Burton Nug. Can't wait until next time I ride and try to get lower and more extended.

  • @spencerthompson1426

    I gotta' say, Ryan, I added forward lean to my bindings and now I'm carving fast w/o skids with much more ease. Thanks for that, dude. Getting to the point boot-out is a bigger concern haha.

    Just as a FYI, that feedback you are talking abt is a minor energy transfer from the back leg to the front leg or vice versa. If you want it on the switch you need to channel that same energy transfer.

    How do you get the board to leave the ground from one turn to the next. Or does that happen automatically when you go faster and put more pressure into the edge.(How do you put more pressure into the edge?) Would also love to see a technique video on how to get lower in heel side turns without washing out, perhaps even trying heelside eurocarves. ( I remember seeing a video of you trying lower heelside turns, but without explanation.) Always enjoy your videos, especially the technique ones.

    Hi Ryan! I'm fairly new with snowboarding&CO and your videos have helped me a big time up to now!
    Anyway, I've got a question for you: what's the best distance between bindings in order to improve a person's butterings? Everywhere I've read about the equations "bigger distance=more stability; lower gap,=better for carving" , which is kinda generic! I'm 179 cm tall if that helps!
    Thanks in advice if you are going to answer me! actually, thanks anyway because all of your content ahha

    Great tips, thanks! I'm going to have to dial in some more forward lean. What you say makes perfect sense, and that's why my shins get so sore. I'm using my toes too much. Hey, BTW, I'd have to crank the volume to hear you talking, and then it would be blasting and if have to turn it back down every time the music came in. But maybe that's just me. Thanks again!

    Hey Ryan, awesome video as always! Very likely you've been asked thousands of times, could you please recommend parameters for carving snowboard? In terms of length, stiffness, sidecuts, geometry? Or just share a link to spec of your snowboard, would be great reference :)

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 лет назад +1

      +seekeyk it really just depends on what you want to do. I use low stance angles so I go very wide so that I don't 'boot-out' while carving. If you ride with positive stance angles you can use a board less wide. Of the Donek boards mine is the best for carving with a freestyle approach. If riding only one direction, the the Incline and Flux both ride incredible. Width is the more difficult spec to choose... (All boards can be customized to length, width and sidecut radius). Check out my work in progress website www.nextlevelsnowboarding.com for some extra insight and if you have questions for a future potential order and want to bounce the specs your thinking of off me, then email me at cofooser@gmail.com

    • @seekeyk
      @seekeyk 7 лет назад

      Ryan Knapton thanks a lot for reply, Ryan.. That's exactly what im looking for.. I want to get next board especially for freestyle carving, learning something you do.. As far as I get from the site, you prefer a bit longer and wider boards. If you use 160cm board, that sounds pretty long as for me.. I'm 177cm and 70kg, my current board is lib Tech banana 156.. I feel the lack of stability on speed (the biggest problem is my skills though). So I thought about getting something longer (maybe 159?) and bit harder (maybe 6). I just assume it should work a bit better.. What do you think? Also, do you prefer twin tip or directional for carving?

    Hey man. I’m pretty much a beginner, only been about 4-5 times. I can heel and toe edge pretty well but when it comes to carving and controlling my speed I kinda chicken out and make really wide toe and heel edge carves to slow down. What do you recommend I do to improve my carving?
    Also I’m 6’4, 220 and my board is a 165cm length and is a lib tech emmagator. I’m not sure but I think that board might be too small for me and I even think it might be a park board but I’m not sure. What do you think about the board and size for my height and weight?

    Ryan Knapton: All the carving action of a Red Bull Air racer while invoking the calmness of a Bob Ross painting session. When you are pushing out of the corners extending your legs, it looks like your uphill legs provides more rebound. Is this a correct observation?

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 лет назад

      +AzizaVFR I think you are right. It's not something I activily think about, but my Thursday Thoughts vid of today does describe how I think (or lack of think) about certain amounts of pressure that I use. Thanks for the kind words and happy shreddin!

Any suggestion on not getting tired too early? Thanks!

    What is the model of the board ? , nice video ;-)

  • @ppjra
    @ppjra 7 лет назад

    Ryan, do you feel that above average ankle flexibility is required to get to that low position like you do? Can you get into a resting squat postition (feet flat on the ground, squatting all the way down)? I can't and I think the reason is that my ankles could use some more flexibilty. When carving, I always feel that I can't push my knees forward enough and I end up tilting my torso forward to compensate or sit back too much.

    • @mloskot
      @mloskot 7 лет назад +1

      My rear leg ankle range of motion is fairly limited comparing to my leading leg. I found that going low quick/dynamic helps, almost like you'd be landing from a jump. Look how Ryan's board is coming off ground when he comes out of turn in the first part of the clip. That is (one of) effect of dynamically lowering your body in knees, the fastest you do it, the more power applies to carving edge and the more power you get back - once you come out of turn with high energy, it is easier to get low with higher energy. That makes it easier to actually bend knees and ankles and go lower. Another thing I found is to not to tighten boots too much to avoid very stiff support. I mean, it's good to find balance between boot flex, how tight you lace them up and still keep them tight enough to keep foot/ankle in place (no vertical ankle movements inside boot). I use Deeluxe with the velcro around shinbone (some Vans have the same) and I never tighten the velcro, that enables my boot to flex enough in ankle joint.
      However, I'd love to hear Ryan's opinion on that too.

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  7 лет назад +1

      I'm not super flexible, and cant have my feel all the way flat when doing a full squat, but just even trying to get more into that position while riding, really makes my turns a lot more fun cuz of what I can do from being in that body position. Good luck and happy shreddin!

    I just realized I think I need to probably go 30 degrees open on my back foot. I know my biomechanics are not very normal and when I squat in the gym my toes have to be pointed way out in order for me to get the full range of moition. And when I try to carve low I feel as if I can't get super low because my legs feel locked up. Gonna have to mess with my stance this Thursday at keystone! Yes!

      he said riging with a straight highback feels bad as opposed to great turns with the highback angled to the toeside. Hope i cleared it:)

      It is not good as in it takes more time to engage the edge from toe to heel, and you are more likely to slide out on the heel side if there is no forward lean.

    Hi Ryan, I have noticed that mostly in toeside turns, your back knee is more bent than the front, like you are putting a bit more weight on the back (you can see it in 3:35 when you start the dynamic turns). Is there a purpose to it? Also, could you explain in one of your videos, the difference between down unweighting and up-unweighting in turning? Thank you.

      +giannis_ch My primary focus and basically all of my turns is putting the most even pressure I can into the sidecut. And then with that, my thoughts are literally 'bruce lee's' flow like water... And let my knees and upper body to try to be quite and fluid with the direction the board wants to take me. And then when I want more action out of the board or do a pop trick out of a carve, then I think about making the water 'crash' and jam extra pressure into the edge, nose or tail. As for the unweighting and such, I really don't think about that at all, so can only explain what I think of while riding. I'll say for sure my back knee is always the one that gets some drag on the toeside like you noticed... It's not something I consiously (sp) think of, but it's what happens for me with my 15,-15 angles. I'd actually assuming me that would be the case with more forward angles, but not 100% sure. And as for weight distribution.. I often hear 60/40... But again for me, I try to direct pressure towards the middle of my board as much as I can. It'd be cool to know how even it actually is! Hope my thoughts help and happy shreddin!

      Hi Giannis and Ryan.
      Besides what Giannis said what is seems to happen when you are carving really tight turns is that the front leg extends and the back leg contracts (you can clearly see this in most of your gopro footage from the front (aka when the gopro is on top of the nose filming you)). Its like the board accelerates forward on the turn while the body stays back and after the turn starts straightning (when already going in a straight line from right to left or left to right, at about the time of the little hop, or when the board decambers) then the body catches up and goes again on the middle of the board. I had found that interesting, like Ryan, with his expertise does this automatically and unconsciously, to kind of kick the front foot out to give this appearance.
      However, I tried several of the tips from Ryan on this channel on how to improve my carving during this christmas holidays and I noticed how after you start understanding how to feel the edge biting on the snow and the sidecut start pushing you into a curve, how on tight turns this happens naturally. In wide turns it doesnt.
      I think this is just the fact that you are going one way, and when you engage the sidecut strongly, the board starts turning really quickly and pulls your front foot out while compressing your back leg in, before your body starts following the same curve. However I must say that I still do many things consciously and it seems that I do indeed put more pressure on my back leg (not a huge amount though) as this allows me to be quite flexible steering the board with my front foot and engaging the edge in a more fine tuned way if I could call it like that. But I cannot say if this is the right way or not, I simply changed a bit my riding after a day with quite some powder where this was working wonderfully and it seemed that also on hard pack snow my riding was smoother by shifting my weight slightly to the back.
      I cannot say much, because I am still just starting to paying attention to my posture, carving and not sliding, etc., I am still a far world away from being completely comfortable at every speed/run.

      @RyanKnapton  7 лет назад

      +Wensheng Sun Luckily I don't have any knee issues. It's mostly hitting big jumps and the repeated impacts from that, that lead many to have hurt knees. Most of what I do is very low impact.

    If you're after feedback, i'd say switch your weight distribution looks ever so slighlty more on the back leg. Really need to practice switch myself as my carving is poor, but hey just thought i'd give you my thoughts for what it's worth.

    great content but you need to work on the sound vs music levels.. I had to manually increase and reduce the sound between cuts which lead to a poor watching experience

So I'm looking forward to making a vid explaining it! Very soon. Till then Qapla'! (Success! (More like wishing /granting success upon, in the Klingon language).
