The "petting the dog" tip really helped me, i was having balance issues on my toe side carves and after watching this i paid more attention to my posture during them and realized i was way over the edge of my board. Im making a concious effort to stay more centered now and its helping a lot. Thanks for the tip!

Question (noob): I currently am riding a Never Summer Heritage. Too stiff for effective carving? I see that Donek is high on your list these days, but a few vids in the shop on gear selection, stance suggestions, binding adjustments would be helpful for some of us rookies. Rock on!

I'm just back from a week of boarding and I can tell you this video helped a lot! I'm still not there yet but going the right direction now cutting down on the choppiness in my turns and the wobbling when going too fast. Thanks for the vid and big thumbs up!

Ryan Knapton i would recommend everyone apply the tips Ryan and Joe provide in this video and others, trust me. I live in Houston and can snowboard only a couple of times a year but listening to Ryan's advice has helped me tremendously in a short amount of time.

I really want to be able to do what you did at 2:38 in the video! I'm no beginner but I never learned to get down low like that. I ride switch really well so I can definitely blast around to switch at the end of the turn but I've never learned to get down low. I'm going out tomorrow and trying these tips out!

I love your "free riding" videos a lot. You are awesome, man.
But I would really appreciate more learning content about riding and carving.
How to control speed, how to initiate turns... You name it.
The basics are understandable, but when I am trying to apply those, I still feel like there is more to it.
A feeling similar to "how to draw an owl tutorial": 1. Draw two ovals. 2. Draw the rest of the owl...
My playlist of 'how to really really really Carve' should help if you haven't seen em... I think there is 7 or 8 of em in it so far.

Thanks for the tips fwiend! Here are some additional tips for riding moguls:
-Select a snowboard with a tapered nose and tail (let's see that Ferrari in action!).
-Narrow your riding stance. We recommend using a 51cm reference stance (measured from the center of one binding to the other).
-Ride the center valley line (as demonstrated).
-Use a soft edge (flatter angle to the snow), especially in hard pack.
-Lean forward and drive with the front foot.

What height rider did you have in mind for the 51 cm stance? Certainly it's not appropriate for everyone!
Good observation fwiend. The 51cm stance works well for riders that are around 192cm (75 inches) tall, smaller humans may want to go even narrower for free-riding. The main idear is to aim for a stance width that is close to shoulder width. Many of the freestyle stances are set up wider than this which we don't recommend for riding bumps.

I wish my instructor mentions making turns early before facing directly to fall line. I've been basically speeding downhill like a demon.

Just ordered a 29.5 width 8.7m sidecut 160cm length knapton twin. This has been my first year riding and I have gotten 24 days so far on a 26.3 cm board. Hopefully I can make some really nice turns before the seasons over! I am a little worried though that 29.5 wont be wide enough to fully lay down with size 10 shoes...
+Pythmere it'll work for it I'm almost positive. :). I go extra extra wide so I have basically no chance of booting out. But I'll do a tutorial how to with less wide soon!
I'm riding a 29 width with 10.5 boots and 18/-18 stance and with my bindings offset towards the heel edge to get a bit extra toe side clearance. With this setup my toes can still drag and hard groomers will kick me out of the edge, but in most conditions I can fully lay down without issue. However, I am going wider so that I can put my bindings back to center and so that I'll have less heel overhang.
You can also look at your bindings some allow more room to carve I have a 28.5 with flow bindings with no angle on one foot and I can't boot out with 10.5 I just set them far back my toes have less then 1/4 inch over hang

Is it true that in order to carve properly， you need to open up the shoulder and stay away from the alignment of the shoulders with the head and tail of the board， which is helpful for beginners. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the precious tips, Ryan AND Joe! I feel much more confident on heel side turns and I was wondering what was wrong with my toe side turns. You might just have answered my doubts.
If you dampen vibrations and avoid chattering on heel side turns by bending your legs how would you suggest to do the same on toe side turns? Is moving feet up and down while "leaning" the knees on the top straps enough?

my kids 12 and 14 yr old went snowboarding (daughter) and son(skiing) with old fart snowboarding dad(50yr)and during and after my vacation I Always played yr vids especially this one with music on tablet full throttle. they think i am in love with you Ryan for Always playing yr awesome vids. Thanks. I use 15,-15 , but Joe is +,+ angles I think. (Not sure what angles though). For riding switch and doing buttering tricks and such, the 12,-12 is great! Happy shreddin!

Totally depends on conditions. Fast firm groomer day: peak 7 and all the rollers on wire patch and Lincoln meadow. Deep pow: horseshoe bowl. 1 day after snow groomers, Northstar it a couple of the runs on 9 or even peak 10. So many other little preferences based on conditions and how busy it is...

My boards sidecut radius is 7.5 m. As I try to make carves the turn becomes really short and it doesn't look like smooth long nice turns. Do you think I should use board with more sidecar radius, or is it just matter of my technique which is not perfect obviously?
I'd primarily focus on making the best turns you can with what you have, and at some point in the future try wider boards and see if you like that aspect (as they will allow for deeper carving without hitting your boots into the snow while doing so). Best of luck and happy shreddin!

What do you mean "forward lean" for heel side turns? Like don't put pressure on the heel back?
+Brenton Arms it's an adjustment on your bindings highbacks.
Angle your highbacks forwards. It gives you more pressure on your heel edge as you'll be 'sat down' during the turn instead of straight legs

If your tilting your board high on edge while carving, I would assume so, especially in soft groomers where the edge since further. For skidded turns, it may or may not. Just depending.
@@RyanKnapton I'll answer this question myself, YES it is a problem. After some quick math i figured i have something less than 60°of maximum possible lean (58-56). Today, first day of the season i fell many times on steep icy parts because my toes or heels were preventing the edge to bite. After that i had to result to a absurd positive 33° fron and 24° back stance on the slopes for putting me in the position of not being scared of my new board losing all the grip at once. Obviously i am pretty pissed at the shop who told me this was no problem.

‘Bad form’ to not have a straight back? Wow. Ryan usually has nice tips but that comment on how some ‘freeriders that you commonly see’ was offputting. Everyone should check out Korua Shapes videos and look at how those riders ride - very creative yet technically demanding riding. Yet, they ride toeside sometimes with bent backs, not straight. Yes, if you’re looking to do toeside laydowns, then straightening your back for full pressure on your edge is great, but it’s not ‘bad form’ to have it bent.
Dean Valadez Ryan did not say that you have to keep your back straight. He said not to reach for the snow on toe side turns and, instead, turn your back away from the snow while pushing the knees in.
