The question of how old he was may be answered by the hepatitis test paperwork they showed during the episode. Not sure if it was accurate, but I believe it said 1941 (making him 82 or so now).
I know he's not in good shape, but for a obese guy with hepatitis (and probably a mile-long list of other issues) to make it into his 80s is a miracle.

In reality, the focus of the episode should've been on Devon 60% or more, but these guys had to think of ratings, and people know who Abby is.
It's called Dark Side of the Ring. Abdullah being a successful adult and making money all around the world isn't dark. This crazy fat bastard blading someone with a blade he used on his own forehead and ruining that guy's opportunity to go to WWE is dark. And Devon being a weirdo and having a downward spiral makes it even darker.

Brian is correct about functional literacy. I worked in a prison, and many inmates couldn’t read or write at a 4th grade level. They can recognize certain words (food, drink, hot, cold, money), write their own name, and speak clearly, but that’s essentially it. They can function and most wouldn’t question it.

    • @Breakfast_of_Champions

Abdullah’s restaurant in Atlanta was so famous that George Clooney mentioned it in Up In The Air. Could an illiterate person open, build and keep a restaurant like that open for years? Abdullah at one point owned a piece of the Puerto Rico territory. As a minority owner he was one of the people running the office. I am not challenging the point there are people in prison who are functionally illiterate but Brian is not saying nobody knows in the case of those inmates , I don’t see how nobody would know after traveling with him or in other cases doing business with him. He has been in the business for decades and now he comes up with this story and none of his former colleagues is backing this story up?

@@fightsports66 "illiteracy" does not mean you can't work with numbers, in fact be even great with it. And the books can be kept by someone else and often are. "Functional illiteracy" means you can do enough to navigate 80-90%% of everyday live, and maybe you got help for the rest. Think about it, how often do you find yourself in situations with friends or acquaintancesthat would actually allow you to take a guess at their level of literacy? That just doesn't happen very often.

As a family of wrestling fans, we watched numerous wrestlers (mostly heels) who would come from "the states", but Abdullah was very unique. He was terrifying, he was brutal, and everyone was scared of him. Whenever we saw him attack Carlos Colon with the fork to the forehead, it incited so much heat that he was legitimately hated and feared by even the adults.

so i compiled the amount of hours i worked for Hannibal monthly, that including audio music bumpers and intros to his posts on RUclips, and also new graphics, gifs and logos, he used all of them...i named some of his shows he paid to make, some had creative names like gnw annihilation, i also wrote a promo almost word for word that he cut on Kody Rhodes open invitational years ago...there was also other things that i kant name off hand that i did for him as well, I never met him in person but i know one thing he would turn into a melted kunt in front of me. anyways...i tried my best as a pure wrestling fan to at least get him in the right direction, some people just are content on the short bus.

My favorite Mr. A. Butcher story involves his passive aftermath. In a post-match interview with Dusty Rhodes, the girl gets a look on her face and motions to Dusty’s arm. Dusty looks over and pulls a dinner fork out of his shoulder that Abby had forcefully injected. Then, The American Dream finished the interview. Wrestling was different back then.

I usually agree with Brian, but he's being a fucking mark here. Abby could read. He signed a deal with WCW , signed a WWE Legends deal and had a restaurant that he ran for a dozen years. Hannibal comes off poorly here and you can hate him all you want, but Abby knew he had Hep C (part of the process that helped decide both court cases) and was serving food at his restaurant (it's why his restaurant shut down).
He mysteriously went broke all of the sudden despite never paying Hannibal and apparently never having any legal fees since his cases went uncontested. It's more like he's hiding his money.
Abby was always known as a shyster carny (watch New Jack shoots about Abby).and was the guy that not only asked for absurd fees, but bitched and moaned even after he got them. And even if Hannibal 'knew what he was getting into', I think that would have changed if Abby had told him beforehand that he had Hep C (and the match where he got it I believe was in Puerto Rico, not Canada).
And Abby's psychology for most of his career was the drizzling shits and about as outlaw mudshow as it gets (yes, I know he could work in All Japan in the 70's, but come about '83 it was ridiculous to watch him int he ring).

Probably the worst episode of DSOTR so far. Still entertaining, but no new info, just like Jimmy said. That Hannibal impression was right on and I finally see why " the great" is in front of Brian's name!

What I liked about these episodes and the older episodes talking 80s and earlier wrestling is the family members who weren’t even involved in the business talk about wrestling like it’s real

I lost pretty much all respect for Hannibal when I saw an interview where he totally dismissed the injuries Erich Kulas sustained. He tried to pull the, “that was nothing, I’m such a badass card” his personality is vapid and unappealing. Awesome impression by Brian, lol.

When I was a kid in the early '90s, I had a poster of Abdullah The Butcher wearing the hood and an axe in his hand up on my wall. I took it down in a couple days. 8-year-old-me was legit scared of that photo.

Real Wrasslin' is dead. Been dead for a long time. When us fan's lost the territories to WWF, we lost the "Soul of wrestling ." McMahon killed what it truly is and what it truly means to true wrestling fans. I really miss the old day's. New stuff sucks.

This was my last ever Darkside. The creators should be embarrassed and ashamed to have given a forumn to Hannibal after what he did to Lando (the ref). What a POS. Boo Darkside.

@juniebugg that doesn't mean shit. Refs can breed. The aftermath with all the stitches and staples told the whole story. Hannibal set out to hurt Lando. He's a fucking POS.

He got in the ring with a guy who is known for drinking his opponents blood and let him blade him. He never asked Abdullah for a blood test. He should be thankful he only got Hep C.

@@scaccu It was stated that Abdullah was personally liable but Cornette believes that a decent lawyer could overturn that verdict. I think I agree with him. Personally, I only think Abby is liable if he knew he had a disease and hid it to continue working.

@@rdrouynriv He got a default judgment, didn't he?

    • @rdrouynriv
      @rdrouynriv Год назад

@@Rjensen2 I'm not sure but I think if Abdullah had lawyered up, he could've defended himself. Maybe I'm wrong in saying that, I don't know much about law outside of the basics. Cornette seems to agree with that idea, though.
Edit: After thinking about it, we don't know how Hannibal presented his case and what was omitted so it is impossible to say without details. Did he know that Abdullah had Hep C before the match and got into it anyway? That is really stupid on his part if that is the case. Did he request blood work before the match and didn't wait for confirmation of blood work? Still stupid. Did he agree to work a match for a fed that doesn't require blood work tests for their wrestlers? Also stupid.
