Geoff had resisted doing this one for all the same reasons you brought up. But their patrons kept requesting it and Layne did a wonderful arrangement.
Voiceplay’s usual release schedule has been interrupted this fall also. First Geoff and family getting COVID, then VP doing a couple concerts in Atlantic City with the band Chicago (will be out on Blu-ray and streaming by Christmas) and - just announced this morning - Eli’s first son Asher was born! So their December video will be late.
Layne made Geoff do this even though he didn't care for this song. He tried so hard to get Layne to pick someone else. In the end, he caved and we all know he has the perfect evil voice for Minister Frollo. The guard that interrupted was past member Tony Wakim and Eli did the voiceover. Geoff said they had three generations of VoicePlay baritones in this video.
Geoff did not want to do this character - too vile. It is stunning, evil, mesmerizing, and utterly unforgettable. Frollo is Disney's least redeemable villain.
I know Geoff didn't really want to do this but he was sooo good!! That low "sin" and then when he rose up from "God have mercy" to "She will burn" i felt the character go from dispair to manic anger.
Geoff is such a good actor!!!

The Voice actor/singer......was Tony Jay.....yes he did sing....great actor, known for a lot of cartoon voices.....evil...yes....but great actor.....>^^
Excellent cover despite the subject matter - hence a reluctance to do this from Geoff - he feels the same way! However he did villain well!.
Geoff always said he wouldn't do this song because of the character of the man. But Layne never takes no for an answer when it comes to his arangements. He knows what he wants. Unfortunately self righteousness is seen a fair bit among supposed Christians. The idea that they could be guilty of sin is beyond them. Which of course negates the whole idea of repentence and being a sinner who needs to repent.
Well, Geoff wasn't on lead, but VoicePlay did cover Kiss from a Rose with Emoni back in 2019 but I believe it's solely available to their patrons in Patreon... so there's that!
I was watching a reactor (not mentioning names) whom I don't normally watch doing this, because I love VP's version of this song so much, it gives me goosepimples every time, and he kept calling Frollo "Frodo." It got so irksome I had to stop watching. And I think he took it down, because I can't find it now. He was getting pretty roasted in his comments. No pun intended. (Well, maybe a little...)

Yep, I agree with you guys. Hunchback was the only Disney movie I didn't like when I was a kid. This song is the only part from the movie that I really remembered. And that was only because of how dark it felt(yes, I was a very odd kid). This was probably Disney's darkest villain song.
I really liked Jonathan Young's version and I loved Voiceplay's version.

I don't like the Hunchback of Notre Dame either. Including the Disney version of this song.
However as always, Voiceplay sprinkled their magic and made me love it.
If you look closely, the pendant Geoff is wearing looks like his wife or mother may have loaned it to him. But he probably wanted to avoid wearing a cross here, although Cesar and J. None do. The other guys are Jewish, so of course they don't. I never saw the movie but I looked up a summary of the original novel, and it is wildly dark. I was curious because Disney is famous for making stories family-friendly, which this 1831 story is nowhere near. I understand your comments, but the attitudes of that time made for ugly pressures (which still exist with some people) of needing to blame evil while not acknowledging evil within. And they did believe in sorcery/witchcraft, even if accusing was weaponized.
