  • In this 5-Minute Quickie video, I show you how to incorporate (or "nest") a character style within a paragraph style to create drop caps in InDesign. Adding in a first line set in small caps makes it the perfect paragraph style for the beginning of a chapter.

Thank you! Very clear and succinct. You solved a maddening problem with a first paragraph drop cap & character style overriding the entire paragraph style -- I had not clicked out of the page.

Thankyou for making such a quick and easy to follow video, Erica. Too many videos with 10-20 minute timeframes that are overly complicated! This is perfect

You're welcome! I'm in the process of creating more videos and my plan is to make more of them like this: five minutes or less (depending on the subject) and just getting to the meat of the problems we all have as designers. No fluff! Haha!

Can I do something similar with Bull Character?

@@EricaGamet A Capped letter at the opening of a chapter - not sunk into the lines of the paragraph.

Still not sure what that looks like. If you want to email me with a sample, I’ll see what I can do for you. In general, if you can style with a character style, you could incorporate that into a paragraph style (using GREP, or nested styles, or some built-in function).

I knew your name seemed familiar! Your CreativeLive InDesign class was part of my company's curriculum. I had zero knowledge but all it took was one class from you! Thanks for that!

I'm so glad you enjoyed my CL class...they are so much fun to create! And I definitely need to get some more videos up here on my channel. Enjoy!

@@EricaGamet Yes, it would be very much helpful if you do! :D I know dropcaps was covered in that class but since I didn't use it often it slipped from my mind but I'm so glad this video is up! Anyway, I'm planning to see more of your CL classes. It really helped me finish a huge rush inDesign project that landed me an award hehe :D
