Great album and a nice, softer, followup to the chaotic White Light/White Heat. For me "Pale Blue Eyes" is the stand out song but "The Murder Mystery" is a real psychedelic trip.
I've read over the last few years that some listeners have described this as a concept album about falling in love, getting your heart broken, healing, redemption and then starting over after love or addiction. I can see how it could fit that narrative. In that assessment I see Pale Blue Eyes as the turning point where you're still in love with someone or addiction but it doesn't love you anymore. Candy Says is written about Candy Darling but the lyrics are so poetically abstract that just about anyone could identify with it. As I get older with aches and pains I identify with this song more than ever. One of my favorite albums. I hope you enjoy.
Lou Reed gave the induction speech for Frank Zappa into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame, posthumously. That's sort of odd I know. Moon Unit accepted. The short story is that no one would do it, and Reed said "I will!" and the speech was very nice and thoughtfully written.
This song is about Candy Darling, a transgender actress who was part of Warhol's circle. She's also the Candy mentioned in "Walk on the Wild Side". The Velvet Underground and Nico, "the banana album," was split between the Velvets' very mellow side ("Sunday Morning," "I'll Be Your Mirror") and the noise /avant garde elements that Cale was partial to, especially his viola drones. Their second album, White Light/White Heat took the latter sound to an extreme. Very polarizing album. I'm in the love it camp. Their third, self-titled LP went the other direction, in part because Lou fired Cale and brought in Doug Yule, who sings "Candy Says". I love the quiet Velvets, too. This album spawned so much of the aesthetic of indie rock of the 80s and 90s and the rhythm guitar on "What Goes On" spawned much of the sound.
Great description. Loaded is a really great album also, it's sound is kind of a combination of the first album and this third album. I love the Loaded album. Love em' all!
Four of the songs on Loaded contain Country elements. One of those songs, Oh Sweet Nuthin' is 100% Southern Rock. There are some new elements on Loaded and this Country sound is one of them. The Allman Brothers debut album was released about 6 months before Loaded was recorded in 1970, at that time Country Rock was starting to really gain steam in the later 60s.
I sampled John's album. I can see that connection with Will To Death, great guitar work (love the bass). Helicali I saved off to a Blues playlist 👍. Unchanging has some guitar work that really stood out to me. Some of the album I expect to hear Anthony's voice because the RHCP sound is there a lot.
There is a doc on yt about Max’s Kansas city, which is a night club in New York were lots of artists were hanging out. I think the channel is called Amplified. Oh Deni if you do get around to the Replacements their album Let It Be is the one that got me into them. Maybe start there.
Amplified is an excellent RUclips channel, it's got artists interviews and interviews with those who know/knew the artist(s) and some great indepth info.
I think "White Light/White Heat" along with the debut are more memorable albums overall, but the self titled and "Loaded" are also master works in their own right...more accesible, yet thoroughly engaging. Reed and Cale were just in another league. They didn't realise it back then. Everybody was too busy being smitten with The Fab Four, I guess.
Stephanie says, she'd like to know why she always has to be the doorway, but she never gets to be the room.
Great to see this reaction, one of the greatest albums ever. Brilliant discography too, this is the most subdued and beautiful of their albums.

That’s good info. I never thought of that concept before.

Beautiful song. I wish I knew how they got that sound. So many of their song defied being put into a genre. Great choice and reaction. Thanks Deni
