    GF2 was my first camera and I have bought and sold so many since then but kept my OG GF2. Now I find myself shooting with it again for the nostalgia and realizing it wasn’t as limiting as I thought it was when I “upgraded” from the GF2 all those years ago.

    I bought a like new GF3 for around 70 USD on MPB earlier this year. I was happy to pay that considering the digicams from the early 2000s were starting to fetch those prices, but their lenses are not removable. So for a digicam-sized M43 camera that I can change lenses with, it's a winner! No regrets

    Hi Robin, I bought a white GF2 for a friend earlier this year for $70 USD. It was in mint condition and came with the box, paperwork and accessories. I also gave her my silver Lumix 12-32mm pancake lens. It's a nice looking compact system which produces nice photos in good light. I do prefer Olympus colors and I also noticed the shutter was a little loud. I have shot it a few times and think it is a very good beginner's camera. Thanks for the video

    • @robinwong

      Overall the GF2 colors are very similar to what Olympus produces. And yes, that shutter sound was just too loud

  • @MikeRinz
    @MikeRinz 3 месяца назад +4

    I had a GF2 and GF1 and the latter was even louder. These cameras were so loud to the point I couldn't shoot street with them, as everyone around me would just turn their heads towards the sound. Both cameras were shutter shock hell! Loved the colors out of these early 12mp Panasonics though, and the Dynamic Monochrome picture profile was one of the best monochrome jpeg profiles I've ever seen.

    About two years ago I paid $60 for a mint GF2 with a 20/1.7 attached to it, and this was in California. Being an Olympus guy, and not liking Lumix jpegs, I never tried the body… until today after watching your video, Robin. Well, I have to admit it: the rendering of raw files is incredible, even by 2024 standards. I’m truly impressed. I have not tried the jpegs, and the menus are not my favorite, but I’m blown away by the raw files. Thanks Robin!

      I got some cameras and lenses with very low price too, some people have no idea what they are selling. Or they simply want to get rid of those things as fast as possible. Recently I bought Pentax K10D with Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 and Tamron 80-210 for about $75 equivallent, all packed in camera bag including batteries and some filter. But just that Sigma lens alone has value around $150 :D
      I also had luck with some M42 lenses in past and then with mirrorless wave coming their price increased several times as people realized that they can easily adapt them and enjoy fast sharp MF 135/2.8 with nice bokeh for example. But what used to be $30 is now $200+

    I have the slightly older GF1 (well, older in comparison to this one... quite old compared to modern standards) but I do agree that these shoot some nice colors and the image quality is not that bad, even compared to a more modern-ish camera). Actually got it for about $20 with 2 batteries (but no charger, and one reason I got it so cheap). Plus the used camera clerk couldn't figure out how to check the shutter count so they were going to just throw it in the "cheap" bin. I actually figured out how to check it and only 1100 shots on it. It's like new except for one minor scratch on the body. But shoots great pictures and well worth the $20 (I did have to buy a charge for it and got a third battery for another $20 on Amazon but for $40 total have a nice little camera. I did have to buy a lens though, so I found a used 12-32 for about $90 on MPB. But it's my day to day EDC camera now (as I shoot FF, sometime I just don't want to carry around a 3 lb camera setup).
    H ave been contemplating getting either a 17mm or 25mm prime.

And micro 4/3 did very well to ride that wave. Even in 2015 or so, I recommended a colleague to look at it instead of buying a DSLR. I think he got an Olympus camera eventually.

For me, the two bug downsides of it are the loud Shutter sound and the auto ISO that can only be set until 1200, although you can manually set it to Higher vales. This means that if you really in auto ISO you Will get blurry images on les Bright scenarios as it Will force slow Shutter speeds.

      The GF2 may have 12MP but the output from that sensor isn't the same as the 12MP 5D and D700 cameras. You can still see a huge gap. The gap closes when Olympus launched the E-M5/E-M1, with better AF and overall reliability. The GF2's AF is also too slow to do anything serious.

    Robin, love the channel! These are still $100+ on Ebay so yes, you stole it. I have a Lumix GF5 and, in many ways, love it. As you know, most Lumix lenses have the Mega OIS built in so no IBS is not really an issue. If you want a real "pocket powerhouse", put the Olympus 17MM F2.8 pancake on that GF2. Tiny package and gives some amazing results! Lastly, Panasonic colors are indeed cool, but Olympus colors were always way too warm for my taste, almost orange. Thanks again, great work!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 месяца назад +1

      Warmth has to do with your white balance settings, nothing to do with color profile or how the camera renders colors. Just tweak your white balance to your liking. There are some color traits in Lumix newer cameras that cannot be fixed easily - even shooting in daylight. That is a problem.

    To be honest, I still have my Olympus E3, OMD5II and OMD1II and I still prefer the OMD1II when I use adapted lenses from FT or EF, the OMD1 is more "tolerant" to adaptations than the Panasonic.

      @@robinwong I hope so but more and more pessimistic.
      The TG-7 is just a rebranded TG-6 that was just a upgraded TG-5, the OM1II is just an OM1 with more RAM and better software, and the OM1 was just an OMD-1III with a few features from the OMD1X. The new lenses are cool but are just those already in Olympus' basket, ready to be launched, same for the OM5 and the PEN.
      They are still great cameras, but not game changer as Olympus cameras were before as the Pen from the 60s, the OM-1 in the 70s, the OM-4 in the 80s, E series in the early 00s with weather sealing/IBIS and finally mirrorless in the early 10s, OM System doesn't improve, it just continues the lineage.

    Some quick googling from reviews back in the day suggests "Rumour says that Panasonic makes the sensor chip used in both Panasonic and Olympus cameras". Wish Lumix would have stuck with whatever approach was giving them good colors until this point .. !

      @@robinwong thanks Robin!! I ask, because in a lot of videos, they review the camera and show photos hardly edited, and we don't see how these photos came... Personally I like shoot jpegs, and I adjust before taking a photo, a little contrast or saturation... I love your videos, and your reviews!! 😎👍

    You can use it with a stabilized like te 42mm I have on my gf1 and use it for portraits etc

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 месяца назад

      No, image stabilization should be built INTO the camera and then it can stabilize ANY lenses you mount on it, not the other way around. Panasonic is slowly learning and catching up on this mistake. Their newer bodies follow what Olympus did more than 10 years ago - include 5-Axis IS in body.

    That shuttersound is nothing compared to my Canon eos 1d mark 3. I hardly heared it I was like that is not loud at all. My Canon m6m2 is louder.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 месяца назад

      Comparing with a DSLR makes no sense, as they had mirror mechanism, which was absent in mirrorless cameras. I have not heard anything LOUDER than GF2 in the Micro Four Thirds system yet.

      Disagreeing with me about something or having different opinion is perfectly fine. But to ACCUSE me of lying in my video, this I cannot accept. I have 100% foolproof evidence I used only ONE lens, the Olympus 25mm F1.8 to capture ALL the images shown in the video. I even have a witness. What did you have to come and claim that I have lied to my audience? That is a very serious allegation and I do not take this lightly.

    • @pcaridad
      @pcaridad 3 месяца назад

      @@robinwong I"m sorry, I didn't mean to accuse you. Maybe the problem is that the lens is a real 25 mm, and I took it like a "25 mm equivalent", maybe you showed the camera with a zoom lens attached, or maybe the images are cropped, because they don't look like taken with a short lens. Anyway, I'm sorry...
