courier one of my favourite playersof the 90s, had it not been for devastating defeats against sampras in A0 1995 and F0 96, he had the potential to win more grand slams
Courier was a beast on clay at this time.....he was fitter than anyone including muster and he had that forehand that was just putting people away match after match....until bruguera in the finals...he had a great run....3 straight french finals....not bad for an american
Yeah , It took a master clay courter to finally dethrone him , in 5 sets, bruguera , ive read , wasnt right for months after. Jim a multi surface player , made finals 3 majors alone, in 93 , Met him, and Sampras in person , photos with both. 2 Nice guys , Couriers handshake , INTENSE
Everybody talks what an animal Muster was, but had Courier stuck around longer, he had the potential to become far greater. Courier was a beast also. Here you can see it.
What do you mean "Had Courier stuck around longer"? Courier didn't retire until early 2000. Muster retired in the middle of 1999. The two players had different career arcs. Courier peaked in the early '90s and was far less of a factor by about 1996. Meanwhile, Muster had to deal with the car accident and knee injury recovery in 1989-1990. Consequently, he almost had two separate careers. At this point in 1993, Muster was just entering his "prime," although it would be another two years before Muster would truly peak. Interestingly, Courier dominated the head-to-head with Muster until 1997 when Muster won three matches in a row, all on hard courts.
I like how all these tennis videos from the 90's have foreign commentary. More free in their copyright restrictions I suppose. Greed is not good in these wonderful lands.
this was the ultimate heavyweight battle... when clay was still clay and all the various tennis surfaces hadn't been engineered to play at almost the same speed.
I'm glad someone else recognises the homoginisation of today's surfaces. There was a reason why Sampras didn't win RG and why the clay courters at the time hated grass
For me that's clay court Tennis. Nowadays the clay Courts are faster, the grass and hard Courts slower. And carpet doesn't exist anymore. I'm not saying that all hard Courts have to get faster again, but there should be Mayor differences between the Speed of the Courts and not like now all surfaces "almost" the same Speed... That would be even more interesting to see, which Player can handle the different Courts...
+Johan Retsler Yes, the rackets are also a point you would have to discuss. Since in the nintees players came out hitting ace after ace they slowed down the courts to avoid that. Wrong decision. Now the rackets are too easy to handle. A little bit like skiing. With skis of today everybody can Ski...
+YesSirPhil Could not agree more. The homogeneity of court surfaces means that the same style of play can work every where. It's no longer a huge adjustment that needs to be made coming from the slow clay at RG to the grass of Wimbledon. And prior to 2002, the two GS were polar opposites. And it made what Borg was able to do quite an incredible feat. Going from slow-as molasses clay to lightning-quick grass, and managing to win both. Lendl won the FO and got to the Wimbledon final in 86 and 87. And as we see in this vid, Jim managed to make the finals both, beating clay-courters, as well as S&Vs. Differing court speeds meant that guys didn't need to have one particular style to win. Whoever could impose their style the best on the given court could win. Today, the only way you can win is to be a baseline grinder. S&V is pretty much extinct. Offensive baseliners can't put the ball past opponents because the slow courts take out the pace of shot, and balls just sit up.
I always thought it strange how courier started to decline so soon after being so dominant in 92. Heatbeat and muster at Roland Garros 6-1 6-4 6-2 just twrlve months before this match
Remember Courier, Agassi, Nadal, Federer are the only players in recent memory to reach the French and Wimbledon finals the same year. Sampras never made the French final ever.

My two favorite players of the mid-90's. Both men are the reason why are started playing tennis myself back in 1995.
I agree. Both are representative for masculine, no-nonsense style of topspin tennis.

+YesSirPhil I hate todays tennis. I want the slow clay and the fast grass back. Why not wooden tennis rackets back too?

completely agree...they ruined the game..

I do think. Mostly beaten by Sampras
He did not recover his form mentally when he lost to Bruguerra in the 93 Roland Garros final
Same. I've always wondered why as well

Sampras never made the French final ever.
cathwitness edberg 1989 too
Djokovic (2014-2015) and Murray (2016) too.
I think a dude called Borg also did that a few times........................
fantastic !!!! *****
Muster wasnt a dominant til about '95 were he won majority of the clay courts tournament.
Yes it was after he decided to change his game and become more aggressive, taking balls on the rise and stepping into the court
I hated Jim's game at the beginning. I quickly learnt to appreciate him..
Very fine person, but his game - not for me.
what racket Thomas using?
match de bourrins! je l'avais suivis

Sampras beat courier in 4 sets at wimby. He barely won a tiebreaker
