    Nooooooooooo. You know my opinions on cleaning coins!!😂

    • @HolzhammerLite
      @HolzhammerLite  2 года назад +13

      Do you metal detect? Do you really want to be looking at that cruddy coin when you know more detail is below? Do you BUY them in that condition??!! NO! We find them like that they are worthless anyway - where is the harm in bringing some detail back??!!!!!!! My God if only to identify it - I bet you dont buy unidentified coins??!!! 😂😁😂

    • @CoinCollector
      @CoinCollector 2 года назад +3

      @@HolzhammerLite in my defence I have been doing metal detecting for years and yes I do find cruddy coins. And part of the fun is identifying them no matter how bad the condition is. I keep me metal detecting coins separate from my other coin collection and I think it’s more fun that way!😂You are removing part of the history of the coin when you clean it so that’s why I don’t. And I actually do buy some unidentified coins occasionally if I think I stand a chance at identifying them. 😂😂😂

      @@CoinCollector I understand and I respect your point of view but then it stands, in your opinion, that therefore nothing.... cars, jewellery, ancient artefacts, houses, outsides of buildings etc. etc.should be cleaned if you think that that dirt adds to an objects "history" - if you dug a gold ring incrusted in 1000 years of ground would you allow yourself to remove it? Thats 1000 years of muddy history... the reason a grotty Roman is a grotty roman is that it has 2000 years of muddy history round it...

    • @jpblitz2104
      @jpblitz2104 2 года назад +8

      @@CoinCollector completely disagree mate. The coin's history stopped at the time it was lost in the ground and then revived again when it was found. What happened in between was crust formation that can be removed. If you go to Glastonbury and return back home, will you not remove your newly acquired 'history' under a shower or would you keep it till you go 6ft under? If a coin has detail below the crust, it must be cleaned to reveal the real history of the coin. Speaking as a metal detectorist with a bit of nautical archaeology training...

    Well done young man 😁👍. I love the way you interject detecting videos with these educational ones - very interesting and helpful. I use those pens and associated products such as the wax. In fact Graham Dempsey, who designed and markets these digs with our club (South Northants MD). He's a really nice bloke. I have quite a stock of it as Graham lets the club buy at a discount and we use them as raffle prizes😁. I love the brass brush inserts, if you use them very gently they're great at removing the initial very heavy crud, allowing you to then use the black or white pen inserts. Hope all otherwise well with you, and once again, as I know you put a lot of time and effort in producing these videos, many thanks: they keep me entertained👍

    Hi Alex: For the approximate one hundred Roman coins that I have, I used an ultrasonic cleaner. I used the recommended jewelry diluted cleaning solution and had exceptional results. This approach is non-contact and non-destructive. To preserve the cleaned coin, I use Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish which is specific for restoration and conservation purposes. Hope this helps.

    Like the caveat to judge your coin first before deciding on the clean vs don’t clean. Most found are for the finders enjoyment (in my opinion) but occasionally the find transcends the individual to be a rare find. One needs to evaluate what you have before proceeding. Thanks for the video!

    I make the cleaning solution for Graham, I've been restoring ancient coins and artefacts for years now, also commissions from private collectors and museums more recently.
    I would highly recommend using a microscope rather than a magnifying glass, for coins that are crumbling slightly especially, also using a microscope eliminates much if not all of the scratching or damage, ensures any softer areas are inspected & treated properly, speeds up the cleaning process and also brings you really fine detail.
    You can pick up a 10X zoom stereo microscope for £30 online and it will last years.
    Also a tip with the solution is to slowly add it to the coin forming a bubble, leave for 20 mins and use either the black tip or white tip depending on the encrustation, once you hit dry dirt again under the scope, wipe with a microfiber cloth and repeat the process, however with the "skin" off now leaving the fluid bubble on the coin is 5 to 10 mins as the solution soaks in much quicker.

    Great video as always. We have a hard hobby don't we? First finding coins and then finding the way how to best clean them. I am sure most of us have their own routine. Instead of water I use olive oil to clean my coins, often I leave the coins in a bath of olive oil for a day or so and then gently rub the coin with similar gear as you are using. True, now and then you harm a coin but I am one of those that pushes hard to identify a coin, I know coin collectors have a different view and I respect that but my fun is partly the identification process. Greetings from Spain.

      Hi Corne and thanks for watching - where in Spain are you? I lived there for a few years ( Madrid mainly) I love it and still go to the Cadiz region a lot! I don't understand the serious coin collectors' mentality... I don't clean a coin that doesnt need it or in my opinion would not benefit from it even if it is in poor condition but those that I think would benefit from a gentle clean then I really don't see the problem - in all honesty I quite like to get them in the sort of condition they would have been in in their natural lifetime! All the Best, Alexander

    I would guess (no knowledge) that an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner would simplify the process, but possibly seek research as to best chemical to use based on metal content of coin. Inexpensive hydrogen peroxide will clean a lot of metals, and mild acids (lemon juice) or oxalic acid (active ingredient in Calcium Lime Rust remover may chemically lift crud without scratching the metal. I've observed Archeologist using natural thorns the same way you are using the pen tips with the basic idea that the point will remove dirt and crud without scratching the metal. PS That magnifier looks spectacular! Cheers

    • @HolzhammerLite
      @HolzhammerLite  2 года назад +2

      That's the crux of it Rhett; to use whatever you think best which won't actually scratch or mark the surface of the coin itself - I have tried an ultrasonic cleaner not with much success but it might not have been a very good one! And yes the magnifier is spectacular that's the best word for it! Hope all well and thank you very much for watching, All the Best, Alexander

      @@HolzHammerSagas Yep and older! Since 1989!! Took a few years to piece together all the info required from official bodies eg even BM etc and commissioned equipment to be built and asked ICI as it was then called for further info which their Lab head scientist provided gratis & free samples and have been using ever since, off and on. Only took me a few weeks to master the process. You can also repatinate in various ways as artists working with metals do...... nothing difficult. Mostly on copper. Most who know how won't tell you as it is in their professional/financial interests to limit this knowledge and why should they disclose trade secrets. Persist, most give up too soon as in most areas of life, when there is ALL the evidence in plain sight that it is achievable.
      So what if you destroy coins that are worthless as they are to learn. Do you realise how many ancients exist??? Heaps!!
      It only took me a few attempts to work it to 'acceptable' and over several weeks to determine the fine tuning required and later by sight which coins are not worth the effort as they were too far gone or too common and not of sufficient value.
      The book that got me started was: "ROMAN COINS and how to collect them" by John Fox, Longman London & NY 1983
      ISBN 0-582-50309-4 (pbk) and in particular, Part VII Cleaning bronze and copper by electrolysis on page 180

      Got it at Foyles Bookstore in London late 1980's. I am not from the UK was a frequent visitor. It is NOT the be all but a good place to start your research.
