The Spanish empire was never the largest for its time, the ottoman and Russian empires were always larger at one point.
@@maxdavis7722 both Russia and ottomans weren't bigger at Spain's peak, which was around the end of the 16th century, Russia still had a long way to surpass it and the ottomans were the biggest in their region, but were not a global empire, like was the Iberian union.
As a brit, people really underestimate the historical size of the British empire.

If we literally count the size of an empire based on the size of their mainland, then 95% of empires in the world are small
@@sgg6643 Not actually. The Napoleonic France would be a little smaller (without Croatia and some not connected to main France territories). Russian Empire would be without Alaska and Manchuria. Mongolian Empire on the other hand would be as big as we imagine it, because of the time context. So, yeah most of empires are probably as big as we imagine. But colonial empires aren't that big
