    great tip... I've always heard 'show the base dowhill' in the 2nd half of the turn, but never 'uphill...' this is a super clear explanation for early edging.

    Something you dont see much is mass projection. To get the edge change before the fall line, and to get the new edge to take you round to the fall line, you need to project your mass, your body, down the slope, as your skis are going away from you. This commits the edge change and the ski carves around to pick you up.
    This is when skiing feels like free falling down a mountain, and is a beautiful experience. The quicker the turn, the closer you mass projection is to the ski tip, the longer the turn, the further.

      I know what you are talking about but that's not teaching. That's just talking about it.

    • @JanosKoranyi
      @JanosKoranyi 4 года назад

      You are right, without a smaller body projection there will be no parallel turn and there is one more very important problem. The inside ski of the following turn. During the edge change this ski will end up too far away ahead of the body and the other ski if you don´t slow it down, or you have to keep the 2 skis close to each other by a separation with your hips, so that the inside ski cannot run away during the edge change forward in its own turning circle.

    • @bumpycarter7896
      @bumpycarter7896 5 лет назад +4

      "The bases" that Josh is referring to is the bottom side of the ski.. As in the base of the ski that is tuned by applying wax. The point being by definition edging exposes the base to someone observing the skier, when the skier passes by the observer.
      Early edging eliminates skidding at the top of the arc and ensures that edging occurs throughout the entire turn/arc.... which is essential for higher performance (carving) skiing.

      florin mogoseanu. He means if you are above him up the hill you will be able to see the bases of his skis because he has transitioned to the new ski edge so early or quickly. His body is now downhill from the skis.

    • @TheGruntski
      @TheGruntski 6 лет назад

      Hi Florin. The video is about transitioning from one turn to another. When you transition in a turn, the uphill ski becomes the weighted ski that is to the outside of the turn. The instructor is working on fully carving the turn without a skid at the beginning of the turn. That's why the warning about trying it on a shallow slope. Skidding kills speed. Good luck with your skiing this year.

    • @JB91710

      florin You just proved that he teaches absolutely NOTHING. He makes nice videos and knows how to be a public speaker and that is IT! He's a Bullshit Artist, Period. Forget everything he said because it means nothing.
      This is what he is trying to say but is unable to say. When you are traversing a slope, you are balanced on the arch of your downhill foot. When you want to start a new turn, you face and lean your upper body down the hill and get off that downhill foot and balance on the uphill foot.
      Because you are no longer balanced you will fall down the hill. That will make your feet roll over and the bases will face up the hill. But who cares where your bases face? You need to know how to position your upper body and change your weight so the skis can turn as designed. You want to be taught, not be Talked At.

      @@JB91710 Calling this instructor a bullshit artist is plainly both insulting and outrageous. You might deceive a viewer who has never tried skiing before but this demonstration which you clearly fail to understand is for intermediates and practiced skiers alike to improve their turn shape. You might be able to help a beginner with your barstool ,cycling analogies but beyond that I think you would be entirely limited.

  • @JB91710
    @JB91710 4 года назад +1

    You teach a person to balance on one arch in a traverse at the bottom of the hill while you are getting them used to moving. Hip into the hill with the upper body down the hill. Balanced on that one down hill arch. Teach them how to keep their leg aligned so they don't flatten the ski and side sideways. You need that knowledge when you become advanced and are carving. A lot of times in a carve you may feel your weighted ski is sliding to much so you tuck your knee back into alignment between your arch and ball joint and the ski will get back on edge.
    When a student is comfortable/confident with traversing at speed, you get them into sliding wedges straight down the hill at greater speeds until they are comfortable/confident. Then, from the wedge, you get them to balance on one arch like they did in the traverses. After that turn is complete, get back on both feet for a brief second and balance on the other arch. With the speed they have been accustomed to, they should be able to do it. As they get better at balancing, you won't even have to tell them to hold their skis together because the correct body position won't allow the unweighted leg to be apart.
    Practicing balancing on one arch is the key to every type of skiing so you have to start that right from the beginning.

      I do indeed remind myself to edge up the hill - especially on the steeps or when the terrain is choppy and it keeps the transitions smooth. In fact instructors teach very specific drills where the student is blocked from pivoting and has no option but to edge early. I thought the video was quite clear. Do you actually ski?

      @@JB91710 Here's my brief take on what it takes to ski well, is is not all inclusive nor do I recommend exercises etc. Just the basics. Open frame movements' arms about bicycle handle bar wide and hands forward. Skis about 4 inches apart parallel and wider for wedge. Angular shape movements using three points of alignment. Ankles and lower leg , hip area and shoulders referenced by hands and arms. Best viewed from the side. Directional movements which require the blending of the afore mentioned skills. Simple? Yes. Easy? Not necessarily.
