With lockdown restrictions beginning to ease more and more hunters are heading out to crack on with grey squirrel control. With that in mind, Mat kicks off this episode with a masterclass on how to make your own feeding station and the techniques and baits to use to get the best from it. Mat then follows up with a session in the hide to demonstrate just how effective feeding stations can be.
Mastering aim off is the key to shooting accurately over various ranges, and in the second part of this week’s show, Mat shows how it’s done. This tutorial shows how to use the different aim points on your scope to apply hold-over, hold-under and how to make allowances when shooting in the wind.

Good shooting, I have 3 air rifles in .177 FAC here in the U.S. with more than enough energy at 40 yards to dispatch humanly. My favorite cup of tea is a heavy wad cutter pellet @ 900 fps at 25 yards or less. The rabbit wire wrapped around the feeder is a great idea, those little critters will destroy anything. You should get some honeycomb mesh to put over your scope it will reduce the reflection of the glass so the squirrels won’t spit you. Keep up the good work.

Excellent advice Mat. I think once you've created your first squirrel feeder, you'll get onto v2.0 quickly and you'll make improvements on every attempt and fix from there on.

Dude...peanuts are all fine an dandy...black sunflower seed high in oil are the chit! If you were to mix the 2 you would increase your kill ratio by a factor of 2....I’m just saying...IMHO...from my personal experience...when I mix these two...I am crushing pests nonstop. What ever works for you and your environment. I’m in the USA near the east coast in SW Pa. this works like freaking magic here for me. What does it hurt to try. If it doesn’t...well chit is different and I’m an ass if it is not as productive for you
as it is for me...AWESOME!
Thanks Heath. I have tried sunflower seeds in a feeder next to one containing peanuts and the squirrels ignored them but I will certainly try black sunflower seed. Thanks for the advice.

Well done mate i control them here in scotland with A18 goodnature and a combination of spring traps very successful and i can also see woodpecker young bieng fed without any horrible squirrels predating them or my nestboxes

I remember as a kid in the UK one getting into my bedroom through an open window one summer and I made the mistake of grabbing it around the neck....it sunk its teeth into my right thumb! Mum took me to the docs to get a tetanus jab. Would love your job haha! Would also love one of the HW110's but they are way too expensive here in Australia.

I want a set of those Primos trigger sticks, they look fantastic.

Grey squirrel control is necessary , I have a good pre charged set up , how does one get involved in helping out with control of this invasive pest ?

Do the squirrels hit the feeders in morning or evening or do they hit it all day long
Hi Kurt.
It can vary from place to place and from season to season but the first and last couple of hours of daylight are usually the best, though you can expect action right through the day. The spike in activity is more distinct in the winter as squirrels are usually very hungry when they first wake up after a long, cold night. They the feed very hard just before dusk to set themselves up for another long night.

Hi Mat, I'm new to this, I have a Hammerli 800 Blackforce break barrel and am getting my 1st C02 gun tomorrow, Umarex 850 M2, (been shot gun/clay pigeon shooting for many years), what I would like to know for once I get properly into this, what does one do with the dead prey?

The easiest way i find is to shoot 177 cal and have the scope as low to the barrel as possible,
this minimises any hold over or under out to 40 yds at a 30 yard zero
That is a very good point, Philip. Too many airgun shooters have their scopes mounted way too high.

Have these feeders got to be bigger than these?? Or is this perfect size
Hi Matt... about the squirrel spooked by the glint from the scope lens. You could try an age old sniper trick of stretching a piece of your wife's old tights across the front of the scope, simply held on by a rubber band. You'll still be able to see through the scope just fine, and glint is all but eliminated. Keep up the great work, really appreciating it with the 'lager lurgy' going on. All the best.

I think the shot count is a little lower but it's certainly good for at least 50 consistent shots. I like a shorter gun and don't mind topping up each time I head out.

Very good question. Grey squirrels are an extremely destructive introduced species in the UK. They carry the squirrel pox disease and have almost made our native red squirrel extinct both by spreading the disease and by out-competing it as grey squirrels are bigger, stronger, more adaptable animals. Grey squirrels also cause extensive damage to woodland by stripping bark from trees. In many cases trees are completely killed - bad for forestry and bad for biodiversity. Grey squirrels also feed on the eggs and chicks of our native birds and also out-compete birds and small mammals such as dormice by mononpolising natural food sources. Like most introduced species, they cause a lot of problems.

Once I start shooting a feeder I tend to shoot it two or three times a week until the squirrels stop coming.

Yes, we eat a lot of squirrel. The meat is excellent - better than rabbit in my opinion.
