Excellent compact overview! Thank you, Matti. Especially your ending: find the camera you are comfortable with. I chose MFT, because size and weight are important to me, although it means less dynamic range. I taught myself that, when I feel sad because some highlights will be blown out, I should look around for someone toting a full frame with a big zoom. I instantly feel happy again.

I started my phographic journey 16 years ago with a basic Pentax DSLR, i was able to photograph many different subjects, including events . I still enjoy using them today, some people still use film cameras as a way to visit their past but for me I never connected to film photography so when I want to visit my past i break out one of my many Pentax cameras. Over the years I added cameras from multiple manufacturers covering Full frame, APSC and Micro 4/3, i also added a Fujifilm XT3 and XT5 along with the Nikon ZF and Zfc when I want to go old school. The selection of cameras today is unlike any time in my life and people that want to get a taste of what it is like to use a piece of modern history should now more than ever considered replacing their cellphone as a means of taking photographs. When I started 16 years ago i had no idea how involved I would get in digital photography but today I own 7 full frame cameras, 10 apsc and 5 Micro 4/3 cameras.

Nice informative video! Was a Nikon shooter for decades and switched to Fuji because at the time Nikon hadn’t sorted out their mirrorless roadmap, it was just before the Z systems and Fuji was so very seductive. Still with Fuji but switched from the XT system to the GFX and I am thrilled.

    Hi Matti.
I mas following since you were a Lumix Ambassador.
I chose Lumix G9 and Ive been very happy with it for last two years. For me it was my first entry into photography and I have learnt a lot since then.
I like to shoot birds and also street photography. The main disappointment after using the G9 was the AF and also, since its a MFT system shooting in low light. High ISO made a lot of noise. Its a a simple menu and I still love this camera. Will continue to use it for birding with the PL100-400.
Today I will receive the Sony A7IV. I have grown as a photographer and plan to use this new camera more for street photography in the city.
I know the AF is great on the Sony however not so great with the IBIS. But, I guess you can't have a perfect camera.
    Again, thank you.

Can I suggest a similar format but by usage; ie; for travel (in two formats- hiking/backpacking and city/country), standard photography, wildlife, portraits and events. You would likely cover everything from mft to medium formats and could be fun…likely give you material for 3 or 4 videos.

I was invested in the Canon M system and loving it. Once it began to look as if they were going to kill it, I just couldn't get over how betrayed I felt. 😅 I was also sick of constantly wondering if I should buy this lens or that and then having to worry about whether there would even be a body to support that lens in the future. No more. I sold it all and now only own a Ricoh GRII, Ricoh GRIIIx, and a flash. Granted, I don't do photography for a living, but I am so much happier and inspired this way. I never want to think about lenses or gear again.

I mostly use Panasonic M4/3 and a Canon RP. The RP produces excellent images and the Lumix is not far behind. But I just have difficulties with EVF’s (including the G9 which I rented recently). So for shooting outside, I fall back to my Canon 5D and a couple of EF lenses. I can actually see what I am shooting and focusing is instant. No auto anything except the usual PASM modes and 9 or 11 focus points of which I rarely use any but the center. Great results when you nail focus. The 2005 era sensor has 12 gorgeous MP . Quite croppable for posting on line. Only good for certain uses but great results when it is in its element. By recycling old cheap equipment, you are not limited to one camera for everything.

I switched from Canon DSLR to Sony mirrorless Cameras, because Sony have excellent mirrorless Cameras and excellent Lenses and you can get many third party Lenses for the Sony E-mount system, I like the size and weight of the Sony A7RIV, it is a bit like fx Nikon FE and Leica R4 Cameras which I also think back in the 80´s had a very good size and weight. My favorite Lenses for Sony are Voigtländer APO-Lanthar Lenses. I still want to see a full frame compact Camera in style like the Contax T (first version) and Minox 35 ML.

Finally, I got the Z9 to replace the D3 that I have been using for about 13 years. Since there is no such thing as the best choice but my own choice and I'm happy with it. Not to mention by chance, it also carries the tradition of my first camera, the F2A + MD + BP from over four decades ago in build, size & weight.
That being said, the Z9 is what I like for my main camera. Otherwise, there are DSLR, APS-C, M4/3, P&S and smartphones on hand for other uses and situations. Round peg for the round hole. 🙂

Nice, brief, summary Matt. I am sure there are many who are not yet ready to buy into the mirrorless systems (especially with the cost of DSLRs dropping around the holidays - and the vast number of cheaper lenses available on the second hand markets). That said, I recently realized out on a fun shoot, that I had forgotten my main camera (Z9 - only mirrorless body) at home, and had to pull out the trusty, rusty 2008 12 megapixel D700 (which I had not used in some time). I faced the same thing most mirrorless shooters might going backwards (from mirrorless to DSLR) especially from the Z9 to D700. The entire capture process had to slow down (sometimes good, many times not), metering was more problematic, there was no AI-human eye detect, AF was in general slower, and the noise and vibration from shutter slap was enormous. I swore, at that moment, I would not shoot DSLRs again. Then I looked at the image quality of the lower resolution, higher pixel pitch, organic noise, smaller files, fewer files - because of the maximum 5 fps with normal battery I had to comb through with beautiful colors SOOC. All this to say, if you are shooting DSLRs, good for you, and don't let anyone tell you different. If you've moved on to mirrorless (as the companies want you to), you are already probably aware of the benefits outweighing most of the downside. One thing not mentioned in this video about the variety of lenses available is the current state of more recent optic. More glass, less light transmission, poorer micro contrast and resultant 3D pop or depth of an image, but better edge to edge sharpness, control of longitudinal and latitudinal chromatic aberration and higher cost. You place Sony high in your rankings (and I completely understand why), but their lenses are relatively expensive and they outdate their models nearly every 2 years (or so it seems). What helps Sony, is, as you mention, the availability of third party glass. We will see if Nikon can accelerate their return to the mountain with opening up their lens mount for 3rd party development.

Switched from Sony APSC to Olympus MFT. To be exact I had Sony alpha 6300 with the holy Sigma Trinity and 24-135mm Zoom. It was a very good camera no doubt, fast AF, strong in low light but after I used Em5 mark II I fell in love with Olympus (OMD). It was definitely slower as the Alpha 6300 and had some troubles so I bought em5 mark III and invested everything into MFT and sold all my Sony gear.

  • @joerg7327
    @joerg7327 2 года назад +3

I switched from Sony DSLR (A-Mount) to MFT and it was the best thing I could ever do as MFT is so much smaller, lighter and cheaper than the Sony E-Mount which was the alternative. Additionally it was an incredible step in image quality from my Sony DSLR to the Lumix G system. Especially for my wildlife pictures also the crop of 2 is a big advantage. Additionally the Panasonic user interface is so much ahead of Sony.
I also need to point out that the Lumix AF is not as bad as people say. Of course there is always room for improvement, but the G9 has no problem with e.g. BIF.

    Nice video!
You apply it in the video, but let me say it stronger: A little argument against the ranking of Canon APSC at worst.
I have Canons M-system with 7 lenses / Samyangs fisheye and M50II + M 6II. This system ist good enough for landscape photography/holidays in my opinion because of it's formfactor - although it has only two bright lenses. Furthermore you can get it cheaper (new or used) because they are discontinued models.
You are right on the two existing lenses at the new APSC of Canon this time.
Therefore I prefer fullframe series (but these lenses are to expensive).

Voisin laittaa laatikkoon kaikki Canon linssini vaihdossa ja siirtyä Sony E ja siihen kaksi perus linssiä. Joku 2.8 kotiin ja joku tele, jotka ovat ok myös videoihin. Micro Four Thirds can be for beginners but also professionals. As far as a professional, they are going to buy the camera that gets the shot.
An example of why ones will full frame is for the low light and shallow DoF for things like events. I agree with someone who will say MFT isn't the best option but I still shoot with MFT for events because I like the cameras and lenses. This does go along with what you were saying about liking the camera you bought does matter.
However many professionals go with MFT for macro and wildlife photography such as birds in flight for the extra DoF, and faster sensor read out for the price. This also helps with the amount of flash power for macro. If you have to shoot at f/22 to get the same DoF as I get at f/11, your flash will be double the power. Battery life can sometimes be a big thing in macro especially in Focus bracketing. Focus bracketing/stacking is quicker and easier to maintain stability with IBIS hand held over the APS and Full Frame models..

Interesting information. I have been thinking about eventually getting full frame mirrorless. Currently, I am quite happy with my Canon and Nikon full frame DSLR cameras, but at some point, I may try the Sony system. On the Canon M system, I have one, and all the Canon lenses are basically kit lenses except the 22mm, which is pretty good. Fortunately, Sigma makes pro grade lenses for it. On the down side, I agree with your assessment that it is going to wither on the vine. The Fuji recommendation is interesting, but I don't want to pour a lot of money into mft (I have an Olympus, but I only use it when weight is extremely important) or APS-C, which is neither as high quality as Full frame or as small and light as mft.
I have a few older APS-C Sony cameras (e.g. A3000 and A5100). I don't really like the menu system but I could probably get used to it (or maybe it has been improved). And the lack of a viewfinder on the A5100 is very annoying. I imagine the good full frame cameras are more usable.
What do you think about the usability of the Sony full frame mirrorless system?
I guess it wll be at least two years before I seriously consider a switch, so things may change, but I am considering Sony or possibly Nikon.

Mike Lane FRPS chose an OM 1 over Sony's best because, after his testing, he found it better for wildlife photography than the Sony.

    • @danncorbit3623
      @danncorbit3623 2 года назад

@@oneeyedphotographer Tiny formats give you better reach and they are easier to carry. But I am convinced that full frame gives better footage and pictures. Camera Conspiracies has some nice demonstrations of this. I have MFT and maybe it is not new enough (Olympus Pen E-PL7) but especially in low light it lags far behind. There are some long steep hikes where I would not use FF cameras because I don't want to carry the weight. But my experience matches what I have seen from other reviews. Now, it is likely that my much more expensive FF equipment is a large part of the reason. Is it fair to match against something that costs 5 times as much? But I am already convinced that for now at least, FF is better. There are, of course, use cases where any type of camera will excel.

I agree with almost everything you said, except that MFT cameras and lenses are cheap everywhere. In South America supply is very limited so prices are high (even higher than some FF lenses and bodies). My opinion is that Sony leads the mirrorless market, but I would place Canon in the second place. I understand that adapting lenses is not ideal, but Canon sells an EF-RF adaptor that makes EF and EFS lenses work just as good as native RF ones. I think Canon knows that so they won't be supporting third party manufacturers any time soon, as they have the largest lens market available (EF/EFS mount). They have also the largest DSLR users that may want to keep their investment in lenses, so it's going to be difficult for them to leave the system. I use Sony with native E-Mount lenses and Canon mirrorless just because I had already invested in many EF-mount Zeiss lenses that I really like.

All 3 brands are great now. Canon, Nikon and Sony have all produced quality mirrorless cameras today. But Sony is still #1, Canon #2 and Nikon #3. Sony was the one company that invested heavily into mirrorless cameras to begin with and revolutionized it thus why they're still in the lead. Sony actually forced Canon and Nikon to stopped their pro-DSLR bodies and start working on mirrorless or get left behind. We can definitely thank Sony for making these dramatic changes or otherwise, Canon and Nikon would still be making DSLR today. Other than that, no matter which brand you go with, go with them because you like them and maybe cost too.

I think there a lot more important factors to consider.
    Examples:
Ergonomics - I think this is actually THE most important factor in deciding what camera system to invest in. Ergonomics is one of the major reasons why I am still invested into Olympus OMD. It is an exceptionally usable system in every aspect. The bodies are fantastic, the button layout is great, everything feels great in the hand. This is a very personal criteria.
Color Science - Color Science is something VERY subjective and overlooked in specs, but with ergonomics THE most important factor in choosing a system. I happen to love Olympus color science and Olympus has been VERY consistent with their color science over all the years from when I started using the E-5 all the way through the E-M1 III I now use. Sony is all over the place with their different models and generations. Their color science is not consistent and subjectively, I dislike Sony's colors - a lot. I don't want to use the word "hate", but you get the idea. I also LOVE Ricoh's color science in the GR series. And I love the color science in Leica cameras. If I could justify a Hasselblad, I would enjoy it just based on the color science.
I think Canon has great color science, I don't really enjoy Nikon's color science so much. Panasonic also rates lower on my scale for color science, though I think it's workable.

Another factor in choosing a system is how much photography or video do you intend to shoot? If I was mainly shooting stills, I don't think mirrorless offers enough to change from a DSLR. If I was mainly shooting video, do the lenses exhibit focus breathing and are they balanced for a gimbal? Then there's cost...

I shoot stills. All of the Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic cameras I have used have better usibility features than the Canon DSLRs I have used. Not because DSLRs cant have them, but because nobody has. Maybe except Pentax, I hear Pentax has IBIS.
Everything displayed on the back of my mirrotless cameras is also available in the EVF. If some mirrorless cameras can have a detachable EVF, then so can DSLRs.
My Canon DSLRs can display a histogram on the back, some have electronic levels for side to side and front to back. All of my mirrors have those, the best, I think, is Olympus. They can display blinkies and/or zebras to show where my proposed photo is overexposed. They have aids to MF such as focus peaking and automatic magnification. My M43 cameras have focus stacking and preburst. The latter has the camera busily capturing images, holding them briefly and dropping them. If you press the shutter button all the way, any buffered photos, and those from that moment are committed to memory card. If you think that bird is going to take off, you can get it every time. Recently I went shooting macro subjects with my macro lens on my Olympus camera. I shot everything at F2.8, stieched up later and the entire flower or whatever was sharp. A bed of flowers, same.
My M43 cameras have a high resolution mode, they can make 80 megapixel images using their 20 megapixel sensor. My Lumix S1R can make 187 megapixel raw files.

@@oneeyedphotographer Indeed, but if you shot stills professionally and had invested in exotic glass, would the cost of going mirrorless be worthwhile? Professional DSLR bodies are strong and their lenses on mirrorless bodies will always be sub-optimal. I have a full frame Lumix body (and Fuji) and if it weren't for shooting video, where mirrorless cameras excel, I don't think I would pay the premium. At a political conference last week, I noticed most of the press pack were still shooting DSLRs and the same goes for sports. Mirrorless will take over eventually because DSLRs - Pentax excepted - will no longer be made. Most early mirrorless adopters were vloggers and amateurs.

Oh mang, you're missing out! Mirrorless offers more than enough to use it over DSLR. During Sony's 2nd generation Mirrorless era with the a7ii and a7Rii, there was no point in switching yet because they were still inferior. Bad EVF compare to OVF. Slow AF and not enough AF points. Movie was good enough. And battery was so little that you need a lot of them to keep you going throughout the day. Now today, everything bad about mirrorless cameras have been improved upon and exceeded expectations. Even if you don't shoot videos, the photography for mirrorless is so much better especially the LIVE view, the silent shutter and the crazy 600+ AF points. DSLR reached its limits and there is nothing else we can do with it anymore.

I do agree with your conclusion that Canon needs to get their act together and sit down with third party manufacturers to allow them to make RF lenses. However, being a RF user, I must say that the AF functionality of (in my case) Sigma ART EF-lenses with the adapter is phenomenal. What's lacking compared to the RF system is of course the optimal use of IBIS in combination with lens IS, but with a 35 or 50 or even 85mm ART lens that's hardly an issue, I think.

If DSLRs didn't exist and someone at a camera manufacturer proposed the concept, they'd be laughed out of the room--mirrorless is clearly the only way to go. As far as which system to choose, that depends primarily on what style of photos the user wishes to produce, especially if they need long FLs. Given the technological advances in hardware and software, in the right hands, virtually ANY currently-produced camera system can produce outstanding results--there is no longer any advantage to larger sensor cameras for 99.99+% of situations (in fact, there are many disadvantages to larger formats). It really comes down to ergonomics--what system "feels right" (both physically and GUI-wise) and allows you to be creative without concern over the technical details. I happen to like the way Lumix handles (particularly the G9) and prefer their UI (touch screen/menus and physical) to any other system.
Putting aside for the moment the fact the GEAR DOESN'T MATTER as far as IQ is concerned (I've can produce gallery/museum-quality prints from 1/2.3" sensor pocket point-and-shoots--even phones), if you need more than about 300mm ("FF" EFL), then anything larger than MFT is going to be a burden to carry, but hey, it's your back, neck (and money). It is annoying that the potential advantages of sharing a common mount and the huge variety of versatile MFT lenses is somewhat compromised by the lack of complete cross-brand compatibility, but it's not really that much of a problem. I primarily shoot Lumix bodies with multiple brands of glass (including fully manual), which brings up AF. It isn't really that important! You (I presume) and I both got along fine with fully manual film cameras for decades and some even consider auto-anything to be a "cheat" (although aging eyes can use a bit of help now and then--I love focus peaking). I just say "use the tech, but don't let it use you."

@@mattisulanto For Street / General photography, the RF 35mm and 50mm are inexpensive lenses which will work as a 56mm and 80mm on the Canon APS-C, then use the kit zoom for the rest. I agree Fujifilm might hold the crown for APS-C support, but I hear the auto-focus is less than stellar, and what is their repair record? All Canon, low to high, are made in Japan. As for Sony, what about the ergonomics and menu system, is that not a drag on the goodness factor? Sony does have some good reviews. I assume Canon is stubborn, like Apple company, and will not budge on third party lens support??? - Loren Schwiderski / Street Photography

Personally, I don't trust Sony, particularly its support. When I researched this a few years ago, I found this true over all of Sony's product ranges. There's also weather sealing....
I think Canon makes the best FF mirrorless camera. Most photographers can get by very well with the ultrawide, the standard wide and standard telephoto zoom lenses, in whatever systems. Choosing Canon in particular comes with the penalty of no third party AF lenses, but that doesn't make it a bad choice. Wouldn't be mine, it's true.
I might be wrong, but isn't it rapidly losing market share?
I bought a Lumix S1R and adaptor for my TS-E lenses. Those lenses are the reason I never considered switching to Nikon or Pentax, after I started using them.
I think the number of lenses is largely irrelevant. Tamron and Sigma have 70-200 lenses for Canon EF, and Canon has several of them - max aperture F2.8 or F8, stabilised or not. Choose one and be happy. What made Canon's FF DSLRs stand out was the other lenses, less common lenses - its (now) five TS-E lenses and its MP-E 65.

How can you even make this video fully knowing the fx30 exist lol also Sony has sooo many more apsc lenses to choose from than Fuji. Also Fuji autofocus is terrible.. super biased video man not cool

@@mattisulanto uhm not really an opinion, more of a fact if you look at tests and statistics ! You have a platform to educate and if you rank brands like this but leave out info you should probably correct it since there are a lot of impressionable people out there watching your stuff

Well, in the video I very clearly say it's my opinion, only one person's opinion and everyone may not agree. If you think Sony APS-C is the best, that is fine and I have no problem with that.

Fujifilm has 10 APS-C ILC models (plus the X100 and XF fixed lens models), each with different features and appeal. I own none of them. I also recognise the strength of Sony’s lens universe. Yes the FX30 is a pretty cool video camera but it won’t be for everyone, and reports are that its sensor isn’t as advanced as Fujifilm’s latest (XH2) and other recent sensors (XT4 etc). So I reckon Matti’s opinion is soundly based.

I went from Canon DSLR to R/RF and came back. CR3 files are nothing but time waste to convert , very limited and not quality build lenses. Adapting lenses comes with terrible bulk from huge adapter.
If I would have tons of money I would go with Leica L mount SL line and L mount Sigma lenses. But I'm not this rich and here is no support for SL cameras in North America, it is sent to Germany for repairs.
