I am from Arizona and remember the time John McCain voted against the Martin Luther King Holiday in Arizona. He later said he was wrong for voting against the holiday. It takes a real man to admit one's faults. I respect a man who works to better himself.
He also explained that he voted against it because when he was a POW his captors would torment him by not letting him sleep and instead repeatedly blared the same political speeches, including one of MLK's. He had PTSD from his five years as a POW and Martin Luther King was a bad memory for him. I heard him tell this story in an interview and he also apologized for voting against making MLK'S birthday a holiday. But he was man enough to admit he made a mistake and explain why he made that mistake.

I agree with what he said about civility returning to politics. We could use more fair-minded people like him involved at every level of government and business. As the child of a career Army service member I have the utmost respect and admiration for the sacrifices made by Senator McCain as well as his dedication to public service. My deepest condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues. No one can replace him and the world is a better place for him having been in it.

I am from Arizona and remember the time John McCain voted against the Martin Luther King Holiday in Arizona. He later said he was wrong for voting against the holiday. It takes a real man to admit one's faults. I respect a man who works to better himself.
He also explained that he voted against it because when he was a POW his captors would torment him by not letting him sleep and instead repeatedly blared the same political speeches, including one of MLK's. He had PTSD from his five years as a POW and Martin Luther King was a bad memory for him. I heard him tell this story in an interview and he also apologized for voting against making MLK'S birthday a holiday. But he was man enough to admit he made a mistake and explain why he made that mistake.
He did that because he saw which way the wind was blowing, and didn't want to end up losing his cushy congressional office seat due to racism accusations.

There was a lot of things that I DID NOT agree with when it came to John McCain but spending 5 years as a POW because you wouldn’t give your fellow comrades up is beyond admirable.
It's important to note that even though he lost to Obama, he requested Obama to deliver his Eulogy, and specifically asked that trump not be allowed to his funeral.

Although I didn’t always agree on politics I respected him immensely. His grace, humility, courage of his convictions and tenacity was a pleasure to watch. I agree with what he said about civility returning to politics. We could use more fair-minded people like him involved at every level of government and business. As the child of a career Army service member I have the utmost respect and admiration for the sacrifices made by Senator McCain as well as his dedication to public service. My deepest condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues. No one can replace him and the world is a better place for him having been in it.

He truely was an international icon. Iam in far away Tanzania and you hear friends speak of his rare quality. His willingness to work with the other side. People point to when he said to a woman who claimed that Obama was a moslem and said no mum he is not. He is a fine man who I happen to disagree with.
