'When Doves Cry' and 'Kiss', two hits, two songs he had the guts to release without a bass. And he made more.
Though when he played live 'Doves', sometimes he added a bass line in the middle of the song and then it goes even better!

The edge that Prince had on MJ was definitely being a virtuoso on all of the instruments he played. Plus his vocal range and the spontaneity of his live performances! I rank them top 2 of Alltime! React to Prince Live on Arsenio Hall Show 1992 ‘Let’s Go Crazy/ Kiss medley’🤘🏾

So interesting that you went with When Doves Cry today because it was exactly 40 years ago that he was putting it together (started on 3/1/1985). Yes, there was bass in the live versions but not the studio version. When it came out, that was a huge discussion point about the song. He was right that no one would believe he’d do something like that. Love that you included the story from Peggy McCreary. She and Susan Rogers (another engineer he employed at that time) have great stories and insight into his music. In my opinion he is the best to ever do it because he wrote all of his songs, very often played every instrument and sang every note, and produced it all by himself. Plus, as you mentioned, he was such a great performer. I stick to live performances with him and there are sooo many. Here are a few for you… live version of America (so funky, plus he plays drums on it), anything from the Glam Slam show (my favorites are Thieves in the Temple/It or Nothing Compares 2 U which is with Rosie Gaines who you heard in the When Doves Cry performance), Motherless Child (one where he really directs the band), Pass the Peas (with Maceo Parker and P plays lots of bass as well as great guitar), the Piano Medley from the Lovesexy tour (really shows off how great he was on piano), and Purple Rain (of course, there are many great versions but I love the one from the Syracuse show on the Purple Rain tour or the 1985 American Music Awards). Looking forward to more Prince reactions. Loved your perspective and thoughts 💜💜💜

Always liked Price,, a much better guitar than he didn't credit for his guitar masterery. That song is much deeper that peoople think. The plot of the movie, the song touches on a crumbling love affair and Prince’s fear of becoming too much like his parents. The crying doves in question seem to point to the two lovers mourning the loss of their relationship. At the beginning of the song, Prince asks Apollonia to picture a time when the two of them were happy together before moving on to a more melancholy scenario when their relationship began to falter. And these versus "Dig if you will the picture - Of you and I engaged in a kiss - The sweat of your body covers me - Can you my darling Can you picture this?
Dream, if you can, a courtyard An ocean of violets in bloom, Animals strike curious poses They feel the heat The heat between me and you" {End Chorus) Prince starts to get introspective in the chorus, begging the all-too-familiar question “are we becoming my parents?” He then rolls around to the titular “crying doves” line, asking why the pair continue to scream at each other. That's my take on the song.

Is the tenor drum tuned low, kind of creating a bass?
