As a former USMC officer, I can tell you that's not the full text of the Rifleman's Creed (originally written by USMC Maj. Gen William H. Rupertus). It is an abridged version Hollywood put into this scene because having the actors recite the full version was probably something the writers figured the audience would find offensive or boring or both. Otherwise, this is a very real portrayal of USMC bootcamp in the 1960s. I know because my dad served in the Corps from 1966 thru 1996 and he thought this movie nailed the bootcamp experience perfectly.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.
My rifle is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other.
Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy.

"My rifle is my best friend." Pile refused to abandon his best friend in the bathroom.
"Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless." Pile took this one literally, he refused to relinquish his rifle, because he did not want to be useless.
"I must fire my rifle true" Pile sure did, managed to kill SGT Heartman with one shot.
"We are the masters of my enemy." In the bathroom, Pile came to believe Heartman was his enemy, and mastered him.
"We are the saviors of my life." Also true, his rifle allowed Pile to take his own life, saving him from a life in prison for committing murder.
"Until there is no enemy." Pile removed the twin enemies of Heartman and himself.
    Amazing movie. RIP Gunnery Sergeant.

@crampons101 Pistols have rifling too. The purpose of rifling is that it makes the projectile pass through the barrel in a spiral-motion giving it extra speed and velocity towards the target.

When there is something, what the US-Americans among many things can, then definitely especially shows, an army and films - sometimes recombined like during ww II and in Vietnam - for the american sense of life.

As (in)side note: Mr Lee Ermey won not the Oscar as support actor, but finally a military promotion from St. Sgt. to a Gun. St. Sgt. like he played in the film. Omen and amen.
